Side DOOM SIREN: This happened to be my first experience with DOOM SIREN(ATX). The intro into “Gun Drone” was particularly satisfying, I’ve always really liked the “acoustic prelude”. At any rate, DOOM SIREN fucking rages. There is something different about the way they do Death Metal/Grindcrust, I’m not sure if it’s how this record is mixed but it has a more natural organic feel, if that makes any sense. I usually don’t like this style all that much but the way DOOM SIREN does it really impressed me. I guess this is kinda like “Scum” era NAPALM DEATH but not, you know? Fuck, I don’t know, but its good.
Additionally, their socio-political lyrics are well thought-out and get the point across without seeming preachy or condescending. I’ll be checking out other releases from DOOM SIREN.
Side ISKRA: These Blackened-Crust merchants from Victoria, BC are at it again with another four tracks of in-your-face anarchist black metal. ISKRA never fail to impress me with their proficiency, musically or lyrically, and that seems to be the standard with every release. With a dozen or so records under their belt, ISKRA seems to be getting better with age. Lyrically their motivation has always been a commentary, no, full on attack against coercion, oppression, hierarchy, religious dogma, etc. and it’s always been backed up with resources. Musically this outfit is relentless and spot-on in their style. ISKRA’s side has three new tracks, of which I thought “Masqueraders of Fraud” was particularly kick-ass, and a cover of MARDUK’s “Leveling Dust”. Choice.
