Of course, TRAGEDY needs absolutely no introduction. Since their inception over a decade ago, they have reenergized and redefined the crust subgenre for a whole new millennium. With each new release, they have pushed the boundaries of the genre, yet still maintained their integrity. Twelve years is a long time to stay DIY and to maintain the mystique/sound of a band without sacrificing quality and/or ethics. Thankfully, TRAGEDY is a super-legit band who are able to grow as musicians and still deliver some of the highest quality dark hardcore punk around!
TRAGEDY is a band that can take their sound and build upon it for their next record. The same style is definitely there (the “TRAGEDY sound” or “T-beat” as I call it), but it has grown organically over the span of the previous three LPs. I have always maintained that “Vengeance” is the best record that this band has ever done, but as I listen to “Darker Days…” more and more, it’s getting harder and harder to choose between the two. I really appreciate how the songs have gotten heavier and darker on this record, to match the current state of the world. Instead of getting caught up in the so-called formula they crafted over the years, they found a way to grow and reinvigorate themselves without sacrificing a single thing.
One of the hardest things about this review is trying to pick a track that stands out, and I mean that in the very best way possible. In all honesty, this is one of the few records I’ve received where every track is as strong as the one before it. In other words, this is one of those rare “perfect albums”. “Darker Days Ahead” is a record that needs to be listened to from beginning to end all at once. As great as the songs are by themselves, listening to the album in its entirety definitely makes the whole listening experience.
As I lie here and listen to the title track, I close my eyes and daydream of a grim future. I can see the skies darken, the air thick with death. Darker days ahead, indeed. The more I listen, the more I come to see that this could very well be the soundtrack to the inevitable crash of civilization. (Inbred)
