the 2 songs on this flexi 7″ are crusty melodic punk rock from the Midwest. this 4 piece from Omaha use great drum rhythms with guitar melodies and gruff political vocals. the sound is a bit muddy but the bass doesnt get lost in the mix. for fans of melodic crust punk, this is a fully competent band. Released on World Trade Records, and Bezerker Records.

every once in a while I get something to review that is a real gem in the underground punk scene. when I first picked this CD up, I thought it was a zine because of the package. the cover art is a hand drawn collage of some political statement about Obama. inside is a Gee Voucher style mini-poster that would be really cool if it was full size. the track listing is layed out like a table of contents, which also make it seem like a zine. highly political lyrics in the pages following cover most anarcho-punk topics, and although they dont mention any womyns topics, Planned Parenthood is mentioned in the Groups to Support section. The CD is 25 songs of Subhumans / Citizen Fish style punk rock with elements of Rudimentary Peni and some reggae dub songs like the mellower side of Conflict or Bad Brains. top notch crisp and clear production with snotty English accent vocals. the art on the back cover is a chimpanzee holding a human skulland laughing at it while a bomb explosion is seen in the background, kind of like saying “you had it coming motherfucker!” this band should bring St Louis back into the spotlight, and I really hope they will come play in Minneapolis! released on their own DIY label Recluse Records, and UK based Active Distribution. a real gem.

whenever I get anything music-wise from California, Im always skeptical at first. with such great music scenes along the coast, I can be very picky as to what bands are good and which ones aren’t. this record is no exception. Death Rock 45 is the latex record from a female fronted “hardcore goth” band that tries but fails to nail the 45 Grave sound. imagine Bikini Kill vocals (but perhaps with more talent) over 1970s heavy rock / punk. the B-side reminds me of Heart mixed with Siouxsie (and the Banshees). singer apparently auditioned for American Idol (Mary Powers). My advice: drop the punk / death rock name, add some more originality, and maybe you will have a decent record. released on Scare America Records.

self-proclaimed 404 fastercore, Cheap Art is a great band from Atlanta GA. the record starts with a noisy dirge-style intro, then kicks into hyper drive after 1:45. short songs with lots of groove, this record isn’t so much noisy as just plain fast. Dual male / female vocals on some songs, good production and a coupple bass led breakdowns. 14 songs in 11 minutes of sheer intensity. released on Reality is a Cult Records, and Hygiene Records

here is a hardcore split from Indiana recorded between 2010 and 2011. Rat Storm is a female fronted band that brings 4 songs on their side, one of which deals with rape and how serious the issue is. they rock the fastcore approach, with crisp production and enough breakdowns to keep it interesting, with clear explanations of the songs. Chaotic Neutral is a 5-piece that plays 4 songs of classic punchy Midwest hardcore. this is a good record to have if you like hardcore / fastcore. a joint release from Dead Rodent Records, Reality is a Cult Records, and Get Better Records.

if you’re not familiar with them by now, Opposition Rising is the new band from Bill T (TOXIC NARCOTIC, MOUTH SEWN SHUT), and does not slow down with either the political intensity or speed from the other releases in the past. Ass Knees as the band calls it is the follow up to 2011’s Aftermathematics. on this 10″ are 4 new East Coast crusty hardcore songs, and a dub version / remix of a song from the previous LP, The Rich Are Killing the Poor. the record insert has lyrics, recording details, and a photo collage of the band and punx live. the guys in the band are totally down to earth and not rockstars at all. they work hard, and play even harder, and are currently on a full U.S. tour. if Opposition Rising comes to your area, go see them and buy some merch! you wont be disappointed. Get Off Your Ass Get Off Your Knees was recorded April 2013 and is a co-release by these labels:

reverb, distortion, hardcore Japanese influenced rhythms. and noise. lots of noise. this is what immediately comes to mind when playing this record. short and fast, by the time this 11 song 19 minute record is over, your face might be blasted off by the sheer intensity that is Kontrasekt. they also have a 7″ in the same style. recommend if you like noisy hardcore d-beat. released June 2013 on Vex Records

How to Build Plywood Pontoons & Long Tail Boat Motors Out of Scrap
this is a d.i.y. guide to building your own boat out of found items, putting them together, and drifting down a river. a group of people from Minneapolis put together 2 boats, rode down to Kansas City with some friends, and drifted down the Missouri River and into the Mississippi River – all for less than $100. their goal was the Gulf of Mexico, and made it all the way down to Arkansas (but not NOLA). a vast majority of this publication is a travel diary of all the event that happened to the group. they lasted 3 months on the 2 rivers, and called it a day after the adventure of a lifetime. A worthy read that doesnt take too long (this book is 64 pages front to back), this is a damn enterataining book to read in an afternoon. also includes survival tips for those who want to do the same. published by Robnoxious via Microcosm Publishing, Portland Oregon.
Pray for Death is a Czech 5 piece that plays crusty stenchcore. downtuned guitars and gutteral growls with dirty production. this record has 3 songs, 2 short, and one long, but doesn’t contain lyrics. Im supposing they sing in Czech because its hard to understand. Recorded in 2011, this Pray for Death release was released on Phobia Records, although i couldnt find it on the label site comes on beautiful banana yellow, just waiting to get your dirty fingerprints all over it. .bands like Warcollapse and Deviated Instinct come to mind. might be hard to find, but is definitely a gem.
this record is 2 songs each from a couple bands on D.I.Y. label Filthy Rat Records based in Helsinki, Finland. Better Not Born has male / female vocals over rapid hardcore, with great breakdowns. think F-Minus, or Gruk. they have been compared with Tragedy, but I dont really see it. a great up and coming band, their debut full length is due to be out next year (2014). on the B-side, Cause a Riot is a streetpunk style with poppy roots, much like The Unseen or the Virus. the diversity on this split really makes it feel like two different records.
