Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

Krum Bums interview by AKD

Cut the Noose

This interview was conducted with Dave, the lead singer for KRUM BUMS when they passed through Omaha, Nebraska in May 2011.

My husband Donny helped book the show at an all ages venue called THE HOLE (which was written about in the last issue and sadly is no more…)  We met in a bar across the street  after the show where I got to pick his brain a little bit.  This is the result….

DEATH FROM ABOVE 4 Trax EP

When I was in high school I played in a band called DFA (Death From Above), we were a total thrash-punk crossover band that listened to healthy doses of DRI, VENOM, METALLICA, COC, the EXPLOITED, etc. We just jammed for our friends and had a good time representing RFHC (Roaring Fork Hard Core). We never recorded anything other than practice tapes and we probably sucked.

This DEATH FROM ABOVE hails from Brazil and plays straight-up D-Beat, this is their first foray into the world of vinyl and they do not suck. DFA does not stray far, if at all, from the patented D-Beat formula and on this 4 song 7” they even cover DISCHARGE’s ‘War’s No Fairytale’ doing it perfectly.

This three-piece packs quite a punch and the production is immaculate. It’s heavy and warm… and punk as fuck! The packaging is the classic black and white imagery so common to this style of music, but folds out into a mini-poster of sorts. There are no lyrics with the genre and songs like ‘Bloody Streets’ and ‘Game of the Arseholes’ you pretty much know what they are about.

This is total DISCHARGE worship with little of its own identity but it is so well done that the record is actually quite fun and is worthy of its existence! (JoshMosh)

1 THE FURLOUGHS review

THE FURLOUGHS s/t 7”
These guys won me over before I even heard the music just because the
record is pressed on recycled on marble vinyl and sold in 100% recycled
kraft envelopes with hand stenciled artwork. Granted, the design is simple
and is without skulls, cops on fire or dirty patched up punks, it has
heart and shows their passion for their project. Maybe I’m wrong and they
are just cheap, but that’s not my call. Also included in the package is a
b/w sheet with photos of the band (some of whom are from distant countries
while the band is based in California) and lyrics which are very engaging
and maintain positivity even when addressing negative aspects of social
behaviors and awful political situations. It’s very refreshing. It’s so
easy to pull out an arsenal four-letter words and resort to harsh name
calling or paint a very gruesome picture in order to get a point across.
Instead, the words are chosen in a thoughtful manner and even delivered in
melodic way where the vocals are used as another instrument instead of
just growling or barking the vocalist’s opinions. I’m thankful for that
since it would have vastly altered the dynamic of the music which is more
of the rock side of punk in that late 80s early 90s D.C. almost post
hardcore style. The drums are careful to work in precise step with the
bass to provide great rhythm and structure for the songs while allowing
the guitars to playfully, yet powerfully work in tuneful harmony to lift
up the entire experience. I would never have guessed that these guys were
so young. (Jake)

1 REASON FOR HATE s/t 7″ review

REASON FOR HATE s/t 7”

Talk about obscure, I can find anything about these guys anywhere online. From what I know they were a punk rock band out of Seattle that was active in the early 90’s. A search for the individual band members online yielded some interesting results. One of the dudes is Jeremy Enigk…Is this the same Jeremy Enigk that went to form Sunny Day Real Estate?

RFH play early 90’s hardcore that may borrow as much from the DC post-punk scene and bands like SOULSIDE as they are reminiscent of more hard-hitting outfits like ECONCHRIST. The music is dark and heavy and the vocals have heavy reverb on them. The music pushes ahead at mostly mid-tempo with a few bursts of raging hardcore speed and the vocals go from a talk/shout to a sheer rage as the music intensifies. I see in the notes on the back of the record they thank RESIST for a place to stay…Maybe they played with them?

On the back of the sleeve it says it was recorded on a single micro-phone in the basement of a place called the Blues House. I don’t know how they did it, but damn!, it came out really good.

The lyrics are not included as the packaging is minimal but from some of the song titles and what I picked up in a few of the songs they seem to sticking to topics of socio-political topics. They even go as far as to spell it out on the back of the sleeve: “No Tolerance for Racism, Sexism, Xenophobia, or Totalitarianism”. Word. (JoshMosh)

1 BLACK HOLE OF CALCUTTA – AGE OF EXTINCTION LP Review

  • February 28, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · Reviews

BLACK HOLE OF CALCUTTA – AGE OF EXTINCTION LP
The first time I threw this on it was spun at 33rpm leading me to believe
that this was going to be an epic journey through some sludgy funeral
doom. Oops, totally the wrong speed. After adjusting the speed and
checking to make sure nobody else noticed (fine, I was alone) I starting
over and was just as stoked on these folks. The opening riffs are slow and
hypnotic, almost enchanting. Just as you allow yourself to give in to it
everything changes: thunderous drums lead in with a warlike rhythm
launching the band into a ferocious wall of chaos. At times I’m reminded
of the HIATUS s/t 12” due to the drawn out melodies with a very
Scandinavian hardcore base. The melodies are carefully paired with manic
tempo changes in the vein of IRON LUNG or DESPISE YOU. The drummer seems to be the backbone here. Not to take away from anyone else, the string section churns out beautiful chaotic violence almost effortlessly, but
Jesse is just killing it, lending to the intensity of the vocals. I’ve had
the line “why do you lie so much?” stuck in my head for a few days now.
The lyrics are pretty intense and personal with youth being the recurring
theme. I can’t say enough good things about this record and I literally
haven’t taken this of the turntable in a week. It’s no surprise that it’s
so good considering the long list of bands these guys have been active
with: THE MAKAI, ¡MAMMOTH TORTA!, KIDS  WITH  HEADLICE, NO THANKS, SCUM
DOGS, DEAD REGIMENT, THE QUAKERS, FACE DOWN, NO GOODNIX, OEDIPUS AND THE
MOTHER FUCKERS. Yep. (Jake)

0 What’s New In The P.E. Distro!

  • February 23, 2012
  • by cavewizard
  • · Store Specials

Hi folks, and welcome to the first posting specifically regarding the Profane Existence distro. Allow me to introduce myself, my real name is Matthew but some people may know me as Cavewizard who writes some of the record reviews here at P.E. but going further back I wrote (and still do) record reviews and interviewed bands for the webzine Downtune Despondency . I have been here at P.E. filling up the distro for a little over a year and a half with punk, crust, grind, metal and even a little bit of deathrock  from all over the world.

OK….so now that that is out of the way, I would like to present what is new here at the distro that I find really exciting!

Just arrived today is the I WANT YOU DEAD: ΑΩ 7”  from Greece! This little surprise gem is one of the best new records I have heard in a while. First off, the packaging is AMAZING. Inside a heavy card stock gate fold sleeve is not only one beautiful smokey gray marbled translucent record , but also a lyric sheet printed on vellum with an extra card stock insert that has an old anatomical image on one side and a detail of a photograph of a wolf in the snow bearing its teeth on the other. Two very powerful images. What’s also interesting about this presentation is that the band’s name is nowhere present on the record, insert or sleeve adding to the ambiance of the overall package. And for all you online DJ’s out there, there is a download card! Here are some pics of this masterpiece from the label website.

Now on to the music….wow! This band rules I have to say. It has been described as “metallic punk” but this is some good straight forward heavy crust punk. Yeah there’s some metal elements goin on here but this really is not like a lot of the other heavy metallic crust out there where the lines blur and its hard to say one way the other. This record is clear and well produced without being overproduced, heavy dark and crusty without being blown out or muddy.  I find it a bit pointless to compare I WANT YOU DEAD one band or another but if I had to,  MORKHIMMEL  was the first that came to mind when I first heard this . I would also have to say that if you are a fan of  Aborted Society Records releases you will love this. This record has some driving and catchy parts as well as some slower parts making their sound diverse and unpredictable without having to use the oh so trendy breakdowns that most bands resort to in order to make a fast to slow transition. Overall, this record has everything going for it – grandiose visual presentation and a crushing and heavy sound that is unique and fresh. Highly recommended!!!!

Also in this week that is killer:

Toddrighteous

ToddrighteousI feel it coming on already.  I’ve learned to recognize the subtle symptoms, after years of experience, where in the past I didn’t even notice I was in the throes of it until afterwards.  Like being in the middle of the woods, you don’t see the forest for the trees until after you’re out.  The lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, total lack of motivation to do anything except get drunk, becoming completely withdrawn from friends, family & loved ones, being emotionally unavailable to those who mean the most to me, turning into a solitary hermit, irascible moods with a short temper and even shorter patience, all signs that I’m beginning to experience seasonal affective disorder, or as it’s more commonly, and very appropriately, referred to, it’s acronym, SAD.  I feel not only changes to my emotional state, but my physical body as well.  I develop a near insatiable appetite, with relentless cravings for the worst possible foods, filled with fat, salt, and sugar, all preferably delivered with a hearty dose of carbohydrates, to a level that no amount of pizza or sweets could satiate, as my body tries to pack on winter weight, preparing for the hibernation that won’t come.  My normal negative and pessimistic outlook toward life is escalated to a near ludicrous degree.  The morose feelings of hopelessness and pointlessness are ever present, constantly weighing me down like a heavy wet blanket that cannot be cast off.  All this, and the seasons have just begun to change.  It’s barely the beginning of fall.  But to me, the first day of fall might as well be the middle of winter.  As soon as the temperature begins to drop, and the days begin to get shorter, something inside me is triggered, something uncontrollable, like the changing of the seasons themselves.  This is a depressing thought to a total control freak like me, just one more thing in life that I feel powerless to change.  It’s a strange thing to feel your self so greatly affected by the seasons, in the same way that the tides are dominated by the gravitational force of the moon’s orbit.  I am not cut out for the short, chilly, grey days of the winter months.  Things seemed much more tolerable in the summer, with the long, hot, brightly lit days, and the sun’s warmth to elevate my moods.  But those times are fleeting, and I’m already feeling overwhelmed by the change of the seasons, even though the worst is yet to come.
