NATURAL CAUSE Mess 7″In the early 90’s we had the pleasure of having Assault with Intent to Free editor Newt join the PE staff. One of the many skills Newt brought to the table was an appreciation for innovative punk music. When Madison, WI natives NATURAL CAUSE played Minneapolis, their unique style caught Newt’s ear and earned them this EP, jointly released by Profane Existence and the band themselves. At the forefront of this movement were the bands DEPRIVED and RESIST, who teamed up here for what has become a near legendary split release. SMUT Wall of Hate 7″ (co-release with Smut Records)“Right from the initital scream and pounding drum beat you know this is a classic 7”. The vocals are always inevitably compared to APPLE sing Jae, and for good reasons. However, Smut are much more powerful than APPLE musically, and faster, too. Great heavy, crunchy medium paced p-u-n-k with no fuckign apologies and no slack. The lyrics are well-written, thoughtfully intertwining various oppressions (homophobia, sexism, greed, etc.) without sounding preachy or fake. DOOM Police Bastard 7″Five songs recorded in 1989, during the same session in which they recorded their brilliant split LP with NO SECURITY. Considered by many to be their best early material, this classic EP contains the songs “Means to an End,” “Relief, Pt. 2,” and of course, “Police Bastard.” This was the second release ever by Profane Existence Records and is considered a masterpiece of “crust.” There are at least five different versions of the cover, but all of the Profane Existence vinyl were made using plates copied from the original “mothers.”
