Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

Despite the inculcation of helplessness within each there remains great power. Ill at ease with such makes us ill. Learn to see the hand that feeds for what it is. You’ve been fooled if you think you’ve got no power. Refuse to be reduced to a consumer you’re a human being. Define yourself by more than wealth. Define yourself as a human. You don’t need what you’re being sold. Bend your knee to no authority but your own mind. You have the power to avoid the gilded trap. Avarice is what you’re conditioned for. Break the mold discover what’s really valuable to you.

0 PE Distro’s Moving Sale = Now 60% Off $25+ Order with Coupon MOVING

  • March 31, 2012
  • by PE Admin
  • · Store Specials

Profane Existence distro is moving to a new space in April and we’re counting down by taking an additional 5% off each day for orders of $25 or more. For example, the first day of the sale will be 5% off, second day will be 10% off, until we reach 60% off on March 31st. You must use the coupon code MOVING when checking out to receive the current day’s discount and your order subtotal must be at least $25 for the coupon to work. The discount is good for everything we sell (and we have over 1000 titles 0n the shelves) but quantities are limited on many items and the best stuff will disappear first. Whatever we don’t sell we’re going to have to move, so we may extend the sale into April if we have to!

Joel Olson

Joel Olson
Joel Olson printing PE T-shirts while still wearing is "Hippycore" locks.

We have just received word that Joel Olson, aka Joel Hippycore, AKA Doctor J passed away this week. Joel Olson was a member of the Profane Existence Collective in the early 90’s, while working on his PhD at the University of Minnesota, co-editing PE magazine issues 11-20 and contributing articles to several subsequent editions. During this time he was also the drummer for the PISSED—the band made up entirely of PE Magazine editors.  Prior to joining Profane Existence, Joel was a one half of the Arizona based Hippycore magazine and record label. Joel was also a member of the Love and Rage Network in the 90’s, help co-found the anarchist Newspaper the Blast. After receiving his PhD, Joel moved back to Arizona where he was a professor at the Norther Arizona University and remained active in the social justice community. There have been countless posts regarding Joels death posted on his Facebook Page, giving a good picture of how many lives Joel touched:

http://www.facebook.com/olson.joel

Here is the announcement we received earlier today regarding Joel’s death:

Dear Comrades:

It has come to my attention that the esteemed activist, writer, and academic Joel Olson passed away while on sabbatical in Europe.

Joel was Associate Professor in the Department of Politics and International Affairs at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona, where he specialized in political theory. A noted expert on racial politics and extremist ideologies, he was the author of _The Abolition of White Democracy_ (University of Minnesota Press, 2004) as well as numerous articles and reviews. Joel was working on a second book, entitled _American Zealot: Fanaticism and Democracy in the United States_, at the time of his death.

During the 1990s Joel was involved with Love and Rage Revolutionary Anarchist Federation and later went on to form Bring the Ruckus! He was a well-known figure in the anti-racist and pro-immigrant movement in Arizona.

Details surrounding Joel’s sudden and very untimely death remain unclear, but it goes without saying that his comrades in the North American Anarchist Studies Network, and throughout the North American and international anarchist community, will very much miss him, and we give our love, sympathy, and solidarity to his family, friends, and loved ones during this most difficult time.

Oiltanker / No Tomorrow Split LP & ATU 7"

The Oiltanker/No Tomorrow split LP and Appalachian Terror Unit 7″  just arrived at the PE warehouse. The official release date for these records is April 3rd, 2012 but we’ve got a sale going on and want you to be able to take advantage of it! Plus these records are awesome and there is no reason they should sit around here for a few extra days when people could be listening to them. And don’t let me forget to mention the Oiltanker/No Tomorrow split comes in some pretty awesome colors. So… ORDER YOUR COPY NOW!

OILTANKER / NO TOMORROW Split LP

Worshipping upon the filth-streaked altars of Scandinavian hardcore, Japanese punk, classic d-beat, and vicious, metallic-minded crust, these two bands have risen rapidly through the underground, and are poised to take the fuck over. Tour after tour, song after song both of these bands are relentless and have shown through their actions that they won’t let up until the world hears their message of defiance and unrest. When looking for new artists to join the Profane Existence family we want bands that exemplify our mission statement. These bands are definitely out there “Making Punk A Threat Again!” While each band has their own unique style it’s easy to see why they are sharing a release together. Their sound is heavy. Their delivery is crushing. The recording embodies the high energy performance and intensity you would expect from a live show while sounding solid and musically tight. This is definitely a record that will breath new life and energy into the crust punk genera. When they contacted us about releasing the record there was no way we could pass it up. This is one of the best new records we have heard in a while!

Fans of Disrupt, Nausea, Doom, & Extreme Noise Terror are sure to agree. With both bands poised to launch live assaults upon the continental US and even further, the release of their split LP is only a merciless harbinger of the destruction that is to come. There will be blood.

APPALACHIAN TERROR UNIT – Armageddon Won’t Be Brought By Gods… 7″

Every once in a great while, a new band comes along with such intense fury that they captivate all who hear and see them — APPALACHIAN TERROR UNIT is one such band. Hailing from the mountains of West Virginia, ATU belt out a thunderous chorus of eco-awareness and chastisement for mankind’s destructive ways (or at least those who are in control). Musically they combine classic punk, crust, and a hint of metal into a sound that’s likened to later years NAUSEA, totally reinforced by the strong female vocals throughout. Adding to the over-all amazing quality of this EP are additional touches of brilliance, like the brutally powerful recording by Jay at the Jam Room in South Carolina (Antischism, Damad, etc.) and cover / poster art by Marald. Normally this sort of praise for a job well done is reserved for bands who have been around the block once or twice—not for the debut EP from a band barely formed a year before recording. This is the band’s first 7” release and came out in 2007.  This record sold over 2,000 copies within the first year. The vinyl has long been out of print and is one of the most sought after records in recent Profane history.  Since their inception this energetic band has completed numerous tours of the United States and Europe and released a series of strong selling records and CD’s. We are excited to have this record back in print just in time to hit the streets before  ATU’s summer tour.

0 Occupy Oakland, RNC 04, and the Preemptive Arrests We Face in Advance of May 1st

Originally posted in the Occupied Oakland Tribune: by EJ Fox – @mrejfox

The Occupy Movement is the largest mass movement for social change since the 60s, and if it maintains momentum it may eclipse its predecessor in both brilliance and effect. But that’s only if we keep pushing. In retrospect, it’s as if the movement practically exploded out of New York in the fall, propelled by pictures of a vicious NYPD cop pepperspraying female protesters, foreshadowing scenes we would see reenacted all across America. I’d just moved to the Bay Area from New York to join a startup, and I remember telling my best friend about the news I’d read that some protesters had moved into a park to “Occupy Wall Street” – I was ecstatic, but disappointed as I’d just driven across the country.

“The revolution’s starting, but it’s all the way in fucking New York,” I said. I had no idea.  I was aware of and had passively participated in the activist community in New York for as long as I could remember. First as one of those kids you see marching along, on the shoulders or holding the hands of their parents. I have memories of marching through the streets of Manhattan to protest the about-to-begin invasion of Iraq, as New Yorkers waved out their windows and sat on their fire escapes cheering us on.

0 Stop Calling Me Hippy! Josh Clusterfux Column

Although I did like quite a few of the UK82 bands I was never much of a ’77 punk, punk ‘n roll, or Oi! fan. Sure, there were a few bands in there that I kind of liked but for the most part those were sub-genres that just didn’t pack much of a punch in my opinion. In most cases it was the lyrics that didn’t really get my attention. Even early on I had an expectation that punk was supposed to be the soundtrack to a revolution, the punks were to pick up where the hippies left off and rally for social and political change. I just didn’t get that with the ’77 and Oi! bands. With many of the UK82 bands, even if the lyrics were empty at least they had cool riffs and weren’t just sped up pop-groups! Part of the problem was I spent the early 80’s listening to Metal. Lots and lots of Metal!

0 On the murder of Trayvon Martin

  • March 27, 2012

  • · News

Rallies are being held nation wide demanding justice for Trayvon Martin,  the young man shot by a a neighborhood watch captain late last month.  This horrible incident has sparked debate on issues of race, gun control, justice (or lack thereof) not only within activist circles but within families who have found a way to keep the peace in the house by keeping silent about these issues.  Here are two pieces posted on activist websites, for more information type Trayvon’s name into a search engine and read everything that pops up.

On February 26, 2012, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin went out to buy some snacks at the nearby 7-Eleven. George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch captain in a small gated community in Sanford, Florida, was driving around in his SUV. Zimmerman called 911, saying Martin looked “real suspicious”—i.e., he was a young Black male, walking around in a hoodie. After the 911 dispatcher told Zimmerman not to pursue the youth, Zimmerman followed Trayvon Martin, got out of his car and then confronted Martin. Zimmerman was carrying a 9-millimeter handgun. Trayvon Martin was carrying a bag of Skittles and a can of iced tea. There was yelling, then a gunshot. Trayvon Martin lay face down in the grass with a fatal bullet wound to the chest. Zimmerman was taken into custody, questioned and released. To this day, he has not been arrested and charged with any crime.

2 THE SHAME – The Plan (Studio Sessions) CD demo

The Shame

The ShameThis little gem of a demo arrived a little while ago and it’s gotten quite a bit of airtime in the PE offices. THE SHAME are a three piece band from Tulsa, OK that features PE alumni Chad Malone (BROTHER INFERIOR,ASSEMBLY OF GOD, LARKIN, BRING DOWN THE HAMMER) on guitar and vocals.  Musically and message-wise, THE SHAME are influenced by UK ’82 Oi and streetpunk bands pulling influences from the likes of classic SHAM 69, BLITZ and THE OPPRESSED.  Generally speaking, this isn’t exactly the style of music PE is known to cover, but many of us did grow up in a time before punk split up into a million sub-genres and listening to this stirs up some nostalgia for the olden days. Lyrics give a nod to the politics historically associated with working class roots of this particular music genre, all the while saying it’s OK to have a pint and a good laugh with your friends. I would really like to see this put out on vinyl and will be sure to buy one if it does! (Dan)
