Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

5 Opening The Cages interview with with Mike XVX by Comrade Black

  • June 6, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · Features · Interviews · PE Web Zine

Mike XvX is a long time animal liberation activist, and singer songwriter who tours in the punk, folk punk and hardcore circuits bringing the message of resistance through music and action wherever he goes. Mike has toured extensively, and has taken part in animal liberation campaigns on four continents. Mike is currently organizing a multimedia tour incorporating different genres of music, poetry, film, and demos bringing the message of militant animal liberation and community activism across the west coast.

PE: Tell us a bit about some of the stuff you have been involved in over the years?

Mike XvX: Well other than this tour, I’ve been pretty busy the past few years. As a musician I’ve traveled to about 20 countries in the last three years which has been an amazing experience all on it’s own. Touring as a solo musician gives me the flexibility to tour as frequent as I’d like, wherever I’d like. I feel very fortunate to travel as much as I do to talk about animal rights in front of so many different people the world over, and in that period of time I’ve been lucky enough to build lasting relationships with a lot of folks I normally would have never had the opportunity to meet.

Other than music, I’ve been involved in the animal rights and other movements for almost a decade now. I’ve worked alongside several different groups in that time, and I try to make myself available to anyone that needs help in their campaigns. I work regularly with Portland and Seattle Animal Defense Leagues, volunteer as often as I can with Portland Anarchist Black Cross, as well as have done work for groups like Sea Shepherd in the past. In March of 2011 I traveled to Japan with Sea Shepherd to document the world largest cetacean slaughter, which is the Dall’s Porpoise slaughter in Otsuchi, Iwate. Incidentally, this was also the location of the epicenter of the tsunami that destroyed all of Japan’s northeastern coast, and myself and five other activists narrowly escaped with our lives.

0 RANCID HELL SPAWN Abolition of the Orgasm 7” review

  • June 5, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

It would seem that something has sent out a call throughout the universe
that is bringing bands out of hibernation. Among bands like ANTISECT,
AMEBIX and DEVIATED INSTINCT is the noisy as all hell RANCID HELL SPAWN.
After 16 years of inactivity, Charlie Chainsaw has decided that it’s a
good time to assault the world with another 7” with four tracks that are
so drowned in distortion that you could almost get away with playing it at
any speed you wanted to and still get the desired effect. The best way I
could describe the sound is KK NULL covering the Ramones. Once you adjust
to how noisy it is, you’ll realize how melodic the writing actually is. As
far as I can tell this is a one-man project utilizing old school
electronic drum technology. I can’t find much information to share about
this except for a discography. There’s no lyrics in the sleeve or on line
that I can find, but the album photos and song titles are pretty
interesting. If you’re into that lo-fi oldschool noise sound, then this is
your thing. Whether or not there are more releases depends on if this one
sells. The power is in your wallet! (Jake)

0 ABOLITIONIST/FOOLS RUSH split 7” review

  • June 5, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

This split is very well matched up with two bands from Portland with
slightly different approaches to good political punk. ABOLITIONIST chose
The Bucket Brigade Kills from their It Used to Rain LP. It’s mid paced,
melodic and super catchy. There’s a certain quality to it that brings to
mind an early eighties skate rock sound like T.S.O.L., AGENT ORANGE OR THE
DAMNED. The lyrics are simple enough to stick in your, but are deep and
thoughtful so while you’re singing along they sort of open up and stick in
the back of your mind. I’ve also read a rumor recently that Chad (co-owner
of Food Fight, an all vegan grocery store, is now in the band). On the
flipside is FOOLS RUSH. At first glance you can tell that they’re full of
youthful spirit. The artwork is a drawing of a shaggy haired kid with a
patch-covered backpack full of fliers holding a staple gun. Then, when the
needle hits the record, the feeling is confirmed. Their sound draws
heavily from the young activist folk punk sound that spread like wildfire
a few years back. The vocals even sound a lot like DEFIANCE OHIO, but
backed by jangley
electric guitar and mid paced drumming that almost feels intentionally
slightly sloppy to add emotional intensity. The lyrics are more aggressive
than the music, but fit really well. Every time I put this on I just keep
flipping it over and over. This moldy splattered avocado vinyl is limited
to 300 and comes with digital download codes. (Jake)

0 TION Piano=Pussy 7” review

  • June 5, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

Grindcore is one of those musical genres that seem to have limitless
possibilities, which can make for some very interesting releases since
there are far less limitations than other genres have. These guys have
added their interpretation of the sound by using only drums and keyboards
creating an instrumental sound that is fun, yet still on the harsh side.
Most of the grind bands that I’ve heard that go this minimal are
disgusting digi or pornogrind bands, but fortunately that’s not the case
here. The front cover has a very soft lit shot of a lingerie clad woman
posing with a keyboard, while the back has a cat “giving up the goat”
while playing a keytar and live shots are included on the inside. This was
obviously a fun side project that was encouraged by one Rob Hanna. We’ve
got Luke Lapants on keyboard and Ben Wah on drums ripping out 5 melodic
and chaotic instrumentals. There are only 200 of these gems pressed and
the only way you’ll get mine is if you have a camo neck through ESP Viper
to trade and even then you’d better be a sweet talker! This is no PHOBIA
or NAPALM DEATH, but it’s a nice disc to have around to switch things up.
$5 ppd and email Ben for a download. (Jake)

0 Featured Artist for June 2012 Chris Parry

  • June 4, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · Interviews

The featured artist for June 2012 is Chris Parry. Chris has been churning out amazing drawings for some time now and we, and a friend of Chris’s felt it’s high time we do a feature on him. We’re proud to showcase some of his work and tell his story. So without further adieu…

PE: How long have you been creating?

Chris Parry: I’ve been drawing since I was a kid. I started doing art for bands when I was 15. That’s about the time I was starting to attend punk and metal shows, and asking the bands if I could draw their flyers.

PE: Some of your work is tense and emotes a sense of anguish and dispair, but there are also pieces that show a lot of beauty. It’s not the typical doomy crust stuff. What influences your artwork? Which artists have influenced you the most?

CP: I like to incorporate elements of nature, mysticism, magic, depression and religion. I tend to use feminine figures in my work as well. I feel that the use of the female in art adds a sense of beauty, giver of life and the sense of a creator. My influences early on were V.C. Johnson, Pushead, Raymond Pettibon and Jim Phillips. Inspiration from skateboard graphics was huge. Nowadays, I get inspiration from a variety of friends and peers. Artists like John Baizley, Jeremy Hush, Santos, Glyn Smith and Paul Ramano just to name a few. I enjoy keeping up with their recent works. They definitely keep me on my toes.

0 ANTISECT Plays Minneapolis 6/3/2012

  • June 1, 2012
  • by xbencrewx
  • · On Tour

ANTISECT (UK Anarcho-Punk Legends)

Antisect are from England formed in 1982. Their debut album, In Darkness There is No Choice, was released in 1983. They played a significant role punk rock history, and are said to have been a major influence upon “black-clad, politically charged punks over the last 30 years”.[1] The band addressed issues of animal rights and social justice and were among the instigators of the squat venue scene in the mid to late 1980s. Members lived the lifestyle of being either on the road or part of the vibrant London squat scene of the time. They toured extensively both in the UK and Europe, before splitting up in 1987. The band reformed in May 2011. The fact that they are touring the U.S. and playing the Triple Rock (Minneapolis, MN) on Sunday June 3rd is epic! If you live in Minneapolis or anywhere within a day’s drive we recommend going to this show.

MISERY (MPLS Crust Legends)

Misery have been making noise in Minneapolis since the late 80’s. Their music and message have been heard around the world… in fact their original vocalist, Al Long, left Misery in 1988 to join legendary New York based anarcho-punk band Nausea. Word on the street has it that he is back in town and will be on stage singing with Misery at this gig. I for one am looking forward to this!

WARTORN (Appleton, WI)

Bitty, famed PE Columnist, and co. will be headed to Minneapolis to make a special appearance at this gig and kick off their West Coast Tour with Profane label-mates IN DEFENCE.

IN DEFENCE (Mpls Pizza Crust… ???)

Local Minneapolis taco thrashers In Defence will kick things off.
