Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

0 MINDFUCK/CONTROLLED EXISTENCE split cassette – review

  • July 20, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

Let’s get the easy stuff out of the way: this predominantly Slovakian(C.E. has a Czech bass player)release is very very limited. There are only 150 hand numbered cassettes, 50 green and 100 black with each band given space for some artwork and lyrics. MINDFUCK decided to go the way of mystery and leave out the lyrics and only use numbers and symbols for song titles. The artwork they chose is a drawing of a double torso person, one having a penis for a head and the other has a vagina for a face. What is this band about? Grind. Plain and simple, MINDFUCK is all about grinding your face of with 11 songs of total bestial carnage. They’ve gone the ANAL CUNT route and skipped the use of a bass player, but the sound isn’t compromised one bit. On the other side, CONTROLLED EXISTENCE kill it! Dawn is not a fan of grind, but she yelled from the other room that this is one of the better bands she’s heard me review in a while. They play crushing female fronted grind/PV that seem to borrow from Scum era NAPALM DEATH. Grind can be tricky to pull off if you don’t want the listener to get bored with a blurry blitz of noise, but these shredders have that under control. The song writing stays interesting and each song has it’s own character. They’ve printed lyrics, but in their native so I have no idea what’s on their minds. The only clue is the drawing of a decaying skull with what looks like a crown of thorns. This is a solid first release for SSGC Records. (Jake)

0 HIPPIES of TODAY – s/t 12” EP – review

  • July 20, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

HIPPIES OF TODAY are HOT. I mean from here on out I will refer to them by their initials which
conveniently spell the word “hot”. There is some historical significance of sorts to this record, the band
broke up in 2002! In the fall of 2011 this French trio got back together at the request of the label/
distro Destructure. HOT were Destructure’s first release some 10 years earlier and as an anniversary
celebration they wanted to release another HOT record. Apparently the band didn’t resist much at the
request to reform and entered the studio to pound out 10 songs that were written but never recorded
during the band’s first life. I listened to some of the earlier stuff online and have to say there is not
much difference in their sound, again the songs were mostly composed before they broke up. The band
blends hardcore with grind with a few traces of melody and metal. If anything the new album more
firmly embraces the grind side of the band. For comparison they remind me of ENABLER quite a bit. I’m
sure there are some old fans still kicking around out there that will surely be ready to add this to their
collection and they will most likely gain some new fans with their brand of punk fueled grind. Welcome
back HIPPIES OF TODAY, you fit in nicely in today’s musical spectrum! (JoshMosh)

0 DRESDEN – Extinguish the Cross EP

  • July 20, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

Yes! The epic crust answer to WARTORN (who share three members with DRESDEN, remember) are back with a super destructive new EP! Each new song they write is better than the last, and these two ragers are proof of that. The guitar work is insane (from the melodic intros to the shredding solos that would make Kirk Hammet writhe with jealousy), and the vocals are even more pissed off than on the last LP (Bitty sounds like he’s been gargling with bleach, while Bones sounds like he’s been trying out for some old death metal band – it fucking works). As usual, the lyrics on this record differ from what would be the “stereotypical” crust subjects. On the title track, the topic of white supremacy and it’s links to Christianity are discussed. The B-side, “Shallow Grave” discusses the “holier-than-thou” aspects of the radically political, and how some attitudes can isolate or turn off potential allies.
So far, this is my favorite DRESDEN material. My only complaint is that I really can’t hear the bass in the mix (although that could just be my crappy stereo speakers), which is too bad – I think more bass can help fill out the sound and make things even heavier. Oh yeah, there’s also the fact that this is only a 2-song 7”. Shit, dudes – you totally could have fit at least one more track on here! Don’t leave me high and dry! (Inbred) GRAB YOUR COPY HERE!

Limited Guiness (black and tan) colored vinyl with embroidered olive Profane Existence patch!

Deviated Instinct formed in 1984 and were a crucial pioneering band in the early British punk/metal scene. Along with bands like Antisect and The Amebix, Deviated Instinct’s music has influenced legions of bands and helped to define the sound we know today as “Crust”. This is their first new studio release in over 22 years. It’s everything fans have come to expect from Deviated Instinct and more. This album features four songs of epic proportions. Their sound on this record bridges the gap between d-beat style crust and heavy metallic doom. The songs are well thought out and skillfully played with top notch studio production. Includes a download card for a digital version plus extra bonus material. BUY HERE

Profane Existence is having their 4th special. It will include a copy of Oroku’s album, Living Through the end Time… along with a mystery CD chosen by our new Intern. (Melissa is from Indianapolis who is finishing school and wants to open her own record store.) Oroku is a band from Seattle with former members of Garmonbozia. Garmonbozia was from Minneapolis and their record was released on Profane Existence. They were one of the first crust bands to incorporate classical cello and arrangements with aggressive female fronted crust. Oroku is a progression of Garmonbozia with explosive melodic tunes combined with their crushing cello. ORDER HERE

If you’re reading this and you’re one of us, this is your evolutionary history. Your recent ancestors passed through the narrowest evolutionary bottleneck our species has yet survived. Somehow, despite extreme environmental pressure, the genes in your lineage didn’t go extinct and weren’t forced to mutate to form a new species. It was your memes that were altered, those elusive cultural DNA code snippets responsible for the reproduction of human social behavior. In other words, your existence is the product of successful memetic engineering.

If you’re reading this and you’re not one of us, chances are you’re one of the last mutant zombie soldiers that have just crushed our tribe to enslave and colonize us. If we’re lucky, you’re an alien anthropologist studying our remains long after we migrated. In either case, I hope you enjoy the story of how we survived and transcended patriarchy…

0 Dreams Of Occupation and liberal fantasies – Comrade Black

  • July 14, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · Columns · PE Web Zine

Don’t worry about sleeping through Occupy, you didn’t miss much other than a lot of middle class liberal students being like “Oh my god you mean I spent all that money of my parents on school and might not have a secure job after!!! oh my god, I just learned the and can barely deal with it, did you know capitalism is bad?!?”

the entire thing was based on the standard liberal bullshit

1) we need a mass movement, if we can get enough people on board we will hit a critical mass/tipping point and those in power will magically change their opinion to whatever we think is right, you know 100 monkeys

2) if we only have the best arguments, and facts, and can back them up, everyone will change their minds and become like us, and they will know our truth is their truth. The 1%[sic] will quit investing money and being rich and being the 1% if we just have enough good arguments

3) There is a right answer. There is one truth, only one, we have it. Our higher education and advanced society has conquered racism, sexism, and other ‘problems of the past’ of those more ignorant people who couldn’t help it because they were so unadvanced. Now we must make it our manifest destiny to share the word or the good news with everyone.

4) the issues that effect the white suburban middle class are the only issues that matter, things like colonialism are ‘special interest issues’ and those Indians pushing them on us is counterproductive because we need to have one unified movement that speaks for everyone. And we know what is best for everyone. strength in unity yo!

5) The problem isn’t the government, or the state, corporations, industrialism, the upper class; it is only the richest 1% the few bad apples who ruin capitalism for the rest of us. Just like when people whine about police brutality, it isn’t the police who are wrong, just a couple bad cops who do violent things. The institution itself is never the problem, I mean, how could we live without cops or cell phones? right? we just need to get rid of the 1% at the top and everyone else will be equal enough for me to get a good job after university.

6) The answer is to camp in the park. Non-violent symbolic protest is always the most effective. Plus it will be fun, there will probably be lots of cute college students down they to flirt with, maybe I will even get laid. Organizing? Protest? What are you talking about, that sounds way too much like work, and if I am not getting paid why should I do work? That is for the poor people to do. They should be working instead of doing drugs and getting in the way of our camp where the real 99% are trying to take a stand. All these lazy homeless people should go to school or get a job and quit making our protest look like we are just a bunch of bums.

7) Those people who wear black and just want to break things don’t represent us. We are the 99%. They are probably just agent provocateurs trying to discredit our legitimate movement by inflicting violence on those windows. If they come around again I will totally call the cops on them.
yup, I am cynical.
The only think posi I can honestly say about the Occupy movement is that it helped politicize a lot of people who had never thought about anything like capitalism, class, or so on. And it was for many folks their first experience with consensus organizing. Now lets just see if they are still doing anything in 5 yrs.

0 Classics of Love – Self-titled LP review

  • July 13, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

This record is a debut full-length and an immediate classic.  It begins with the punchy anthem, “What a Shame”, and moves onto the blustery ska piece “Castle in the Sky.”  The musical tracks are characterized by unexpected turns of phrases; strong, walking bass lines that are complemented by guitar work ranging from melodic (“Light Rail”) to full-out hardcore (“Stronghold”) and tight drumming throughout.  Floating over the controlled musical chaos underneath, the vocals are tough and catchy.  “Gun Show” is an inventive call and response between two vocalists.  The first side ends with “Moving Pictures”, which is not one of the strongest songs on the record, but provides a refreshingly slower pace to the rest of the songs. The second side continues the theme of interweaving catchy songs like “Light Rail” and “It Will Not Be Moved”, with outright hardcore ones like “Dissolve”. Unsurprisingly, the recording is characterized by insightful lyrics that address themes of social injustice and personal alienation.  You will, undoubtedly, be tempted to compare this record to Jesse Michaels’ earlier band which shall remain unnamed, but it stands proudly on its own.  This is a must-own if you don’t have it already.  (Frank-n-Kamala)
