Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

1 MARK LEONARD – Work Free Play Zone CD/zine review

  • July 13, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

What I absolutely love most about this release (besides being an amazing example of DIY ethic) is that instead of just including lyrics in the sleeve, they are made into a full booklet size black and white cut and paste style ‘zine. This is the second release he’s done this way and it’s a winning format. It starts with two pages of intro banter and info, then leads into 11 pages of lyrics for the 14 songs with all sorts of pictures and drawings filling out the pages. Then there’s a piece on making reusable pads as an alternative to the bleached cotton pads/tampons offered by shitty companies, political rants and wraps up with a piece on finding true happiness. Better than a standard lyric sheet any day. The music is really catchy acoustic folk punk that is a little Billy Bragg and part Jon the Baker with a Cometbus feel overall. There are love songs, drinking songs, songs about shitty abusive cops and even the American scheme. Hope in hopeless times appears to be the underlying theme throughout here. It’s more realistic that idealistic, which is kinda nice. Maybe I’m just an old crank, but overly optimistic bands can drive me crazy and often make me think that those folks live in some weird bubble. This seems to have a really good balance between “chin up” and “we’re totally fucked”. I’m slowly becoming more of a fan of folk punk. (Jake)

0 ACXDC – They Had It Coming 7” review

  • July 13, 2012

  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

ACXDC is name I have been familiar with for some time but have never really listened to them until now. They are stalwarts of the DIY scene in LA have been since 2003. Fierce! This band is fierce! They attack like a swarm of possessed wasps ready to sting and sting and sting again. Wasps can be violent. I once dug up a wasp nest they was a foot and half deep into the ground and about six inches wide. The sting happy insects unleashed their violence on me and stung me seventeen times (even though I had taken precautions) before I was able to fully eradicate their wretched next. And again like a swarm of angry wasps the violence rips my speakers as the insane vocals trade off between a screech and growl. This record is pure angry violence as the mix is somewhat lacking but the vehement energy makes up for any short comings of the mix. The lyrics are dumb and explore an array of silly topics like and Ode to John Ritter, rantings about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and even a song about Chewbacca. From what I can tell these dudes are straight-edge and satanic. They proclaim themselves as “Anti-Christ Demon Core”…There you have it. So now that I have been exposed to ACXDC and their furious barrage of viciousness I can imagine that they just flat out destroy it in the live setting. Power-violence or extreme grind-core, call it whatever you want…This is some sick shit! (Josh Mosh)

Being a GG Allin fan and scum punk rock n’ roll in general I felt this was right up my alley. The cover has a low quality picture of the band with a guy that from a distance sort of resembles GG Allin. The music is exactly what one thinks of with this genre. Its simplistic and overdiven with fuzz giving it a lo-fi sound to it. Honestly anything else wouldn’t do. The songs are fairly short and enjoyable. Thankfully there doesn’t seem to have the undertones of misogyny that a lot of these bands tend to exhibit. Nor does it have the violent lyrics that have popped up due to GG Allin’s success. Don’t get me wrong as I do enjoy GG but every band that has a similar sound doesn’t also have to try to ride his coattails lyrically as well. Lyrically it actually is closer to pop punk which is a nice change of pace. I appreciate what they are doing. They are playing music they love without trying to hard to gain an audience. Anybody looking for some rock n’ roll punk would feel right at home with these guys and would definitely enjoy a spin or two of this record. (Travis Assault)

0 Rations – How Much Land Does a Man Need? 7” review

  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

Being fairly picky with my fringe genres of punk and hardcore I was a bit skeptical of this band. From the first song I got a very post-hardcore/ post-punk/ noise-rock vibe from them. IT felt like they may have had some influence from bands like DRIVE LIKE JEHU or SONIC YOUTH and the like. Unlike a lot of the other bands influenced by them, they did not get heavier but actually a bit more noisy. The songs are fairly short with a noise edge to them. I did thoroughly enjoy this record in spite of my normal distaste for the genre. Something about the songs made them listenable and enjoyable to kick back and enjoy a glass of beer with friends. His vocals fit the band and what actually reminded me of DRIVE LIKE JEHU so much. His cracking voice overlaying the noisy background just melded so well that I found myself hard pressed to dislike the band. It isn’t something I would put on everyday personally but fans of this style may keep this on their turntable for a few spins before putting it into normal rotation. Was it a perfect record? It had its moments where I was less than enthused to be listening to it. In the end though it is was just small things that didn’t impede my listening pleasure for the duration of this record. Another thing about this record worth mentioning is the booklet that comes with it. Its a six page booklet including lyrics and some explanations. It is a nice addition to an overall good record and giving value to their music as well. (Travis Assault)

0 Parasight – Moral Recession 7” review

  • July 13, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

From the bizarre cover to the fonts used on the record, it was was pretty apparent that I was in for some new school styled hardcore. Despite this being the case, it is unfair to label them as such. They do have some punk and metal parts mixed in for good measure and the music is heavy but there is something a little different with these guys. The music is heavy and fast just the way it should be and the breakdowns are actually expertly intertwined with the song so it doesn’t get in the way or take away from the rest of the song. My problem with this style is that a lot of times it becomes extremely boring after two or three songs due to the songs sounding too similar and the songs feel like parts that just lead to breakdown after breakdown. This didn’t happen with this record. The songs are different enough and enjoyable enough to not fall victim to this. It does only have five tracks so a full length could potentially succumb to these problems but with the quality of what is here I doubt it. One of the greatest things about this record is the use of melodies through out the songs. They use melodic licks over the heavy riffs to get an excellent sound. These songs are not just heavy for the sake of being heavy but works of art..hardcore art! As with most bands the vocals make or break them. The vocalist belts it out with a distinct craft that its hard not to enjoy these guys. This is for fans of heavy music in general but fans of TRADGEDY will absolutely love these guys. Do yourself a favor and listen to such an awesome band. (Travis Assault)

0 APPALACHIAN TERROR UNIT- Black Sands 7” review

This band has greatly improved since the Armageddon Won’t Be Brought By Gods… 7” and the Greenwashing LP (I haven’t listened to the split with OI POLLOI).  This took the heavy from heavy metal and the punk from punk rock and made quite a concoction- the guitars are doomy thrash punk, drums and bass beat-keeping instruments, and the vocals are mostly snarling shrilly shouts from Sarah, with some contributions from guitarist Chris.  Though less anthemic in nature than some of A.T.U.’s previous songs, these tunes still kill- this is some real ripping crust (in fact, it might be accurate to think of the band as a punkier HELLBASTARD, as though that band decided to be more influenced by punk than by metal).  The lyrics are very pointed left-wing punxiness- well-penned, but not deviant from the usual Profane Existence type stuff.  Still, the riffs and beats in “The End of Complacency” are enough to keep me headbanging and jumping off tables (and other elevated surfaces); intellectually, it’s enough to keep me intrigued and interested in the band for a while.  Very recommended. -Aunty Social

  • · PE Records

In celebration of these new records we will include a FREE black on black Profane Existence embroidered patch to anyone who orders all three together (between now and Sunday July 15th, 2012). ORDER HERE

DEVIATED INSTINCT – Liberty Crawls.. LP

Deviated Instinct formed in 1984 and were a crucial pioneering band in the early British punk/metal scene. Along with bands like Antisect and The Amebix, Deviated Instinct’s music has influenced legions of bands and helped to define the sound we know today as “Crust”. This is their first new studio release in over 22 years. It’s everything fans have come to expect from Deviated Instinct and more. This album features four songs of epic proportions. Their sound on this record bridges the gap between d-beat style crust and heavy metallic doom. The songs are well thought out and skillfully played with top notch studio production. Includes a download card for a digital version plus extra bonus material. Profane Existence is proud to be apart of this release!

WAR//PLAGUE – On A Darker Dawn LP

Minneapolis punk veterans War//Plague return with their debut full length album “On A Darker Dawn”. This album brings forth over 2 years of socio/political rage and ferocity that is unleashed into a culmination of metallic fury. On a Darker Dawn is the bands defining pinnacle, both musically and lyrically. Coming from previous bands such as Provoked, Calloused and Pontius Pilate. These Minneapolis punks know their roots and the underbelly of the DIY movement has fueled them since day one. With the bands driving and aggressive guitars, barrage of brutal drum convergence, and vocal war cries, this album brings all their years of punk and rage into an apex of brutality. LP comes on solid yellow sun colored vinyl.

WARTORN – Aftermath… 2004-2010 LP

Wartorn is back with a discography LP highlighting their most punishing works from 2004-2010. The LP was pressed on wicked splatter wax and features the best cuts from “Tainting Tomorrow With The Blood Of Yesterday”, “In The Name Of The Father, Son & Holy War” and their split with Pyroklast. The record also comes with a digital download card with everything else that wouldn’t fit on the actual record… including tracks from their long out of print split with Appalachian Terror Unit. Only available from PE direct through the webstore. Limited to 100 copies.

1 PE Special #3: Sod Hauler (Plus 3 More!)

PE Special #3 (SOD HAULER e.p. plus 3 more!)

This is the 3rd installment of the PE Special $6.66 series. We had to feature SOD HAULER’s first e.p… plus 3 more special selections from our distro box. (Limited to 10 pacts!)  ORDER NOW!

SOD HAULER – Self Titled e.p.

Sod Hauler, hail from Seattle and feature members of STATE OF THE UNION… a band with several releases on Profane Existence. Although we haven’t released anything for Sod Hauler we believe them to be solid as f*ck band with a heavy as f*ck sound that is punishing and demands attention. And we just happened to get an order of their first e.p. so here it is. For fans of Eye Hate God, Sleep, Sabbath and Buzzoven. All Hail Sod Hauler. Smoke up and bow down!

BLOOD OF THE GODS – The Shadow Before

This is the debut release from New Hampshire’s axe-wielding, death-crust-dbeat warriors, Blood of the Gods. Like a clan of possessed, drunken Viking Berzerkers marching into your ear canals, BOTG will violate, pillage and decimate everything you once thought was deadly and brutal in the “Metal-Punk” realm. Eight unsubtle nuances of sheer brutality range from skull crushing slow grooves to gut-wrenching gallops and blood boiling blast beats. Fans of Bolt Thrower, Disrupt, Obituary, Stormcrow and others of similar ilk will proudly sacrifice their eardrums to this devastating disc. Features ex-members of Buriedinhell Record’s very own dbeat/crust merchants, Man The Conveyors.

THE DETONATORS – Balls To You Emergency Broadcasting System (naked: sans case)

“The Detonators were hard-working, long-running, prolific and vastly underrated.  They began in California in the mid-1980s (where punk was huge) but inexplicably decided to move to Eugene, Oregon (where punk was nearly non-existent.) Who knows, maybe they wanted a challenge. Maybe they would have been very popular if they’d stayed in California. Maybe they didn’t want to be popular. Like I said, who knows? In any event, the Detonators made a lot of great records. The band considers the 1988 “Balls To You” album their best effort, and I stand in agreement. The Detonators hand-crafted fine, memorable punk rock tunes with a hardcore flair, much in the tradition of  D.O.A., Toxic Reasons, Social Unrest and the Canadian Subhumans. Strong guitar riffs and simple vocal lines are the Detonators’ bread and butter, yet each song is uniquely its own.” – (BS)

DON’T FALL ASLEEP – A Minneapolis D.I.Y. compilation for Day Break Newspaper. (naked: sans case)

This comp features variety of Minneapolis based activist-punk/peace punk bands who hung out on the West Bank (Seward, Hard Times, and  Bedlam) & supported the anti-corporate anarcho ideals behind Day Break Newspaper. This comp is a few years old now and many of the bands on here have broken up but it is still awesome and stands as a testimony of the d.i.y./community spirit of the Minneapolis scene.

PE Special #2

Only one very special person is going to get this package. That’s it. Here is the back story: There is a dude from Minneapolis named Ryan Bezerker. He comes over to Profane Existence to help stuff records. He also runs a d.i.y. tape/record label called Bezerker Records. When we had a bigger distro we use to trade with him all the time.  Ryan’s roomate is into country music and loves Kenny Chesney. This bugs the shit out of Ryan. All he does when he’s at Profane is complain about how much he hates having to listen to Kenny Chesney when he is at home. So to mess with our good friend Ryan Bezerker we are offering three of his tapes 1) RELENTLESS APPROACH 2) EYE GOUGE & 3) BLACK COFFEE (Australia) all wrapped up together in a Kenny Chesney 2012 tour edition t-shirt. Sorry. I know everyone is gonna want this… especially for the shirt but it’s the only one we got.  ORDER NOW!
