Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

MALATESTA are a German crust band that began in 2009. This is their first release, and it’s a rager! They are inspired by the Swedish and Portland dark crust scenes of the earlier part of this century (WOLFBRIGADE, TRAGEDY, etc) but exist on a much more lo-fi plain. The lo-fi sound quality really helps them out, because they sound truly pissed and raw this way. When I use the words “inspired by”, I mean just that. These punks aren’t just another copy cat. You can tell which bands they love, but they take that and go in their own direction, making the songs and the style their own. This is a nice little surprise, and I can’t recommend this enough. Extra points for singing in their own language. (Inbred)

0 STAR FUCKING HIPSTERS / JESUS FUCKING CHRIST – The Fucking Split EP

  • October 23, 2012
  • by damieninbred
  • · Reviews

Before anything, let me warn you that the SFH side of this split is called “Passion of the Crust”, so take that as you will. The title song sounds like a faster, more aggressive non-ska LEFTOVER CRACK tune, which makes sense if you know anything about their connection to SFH. The lyrics could have been ripped straight out of the LOC playbook, and… if you’re into them, you’ll be into this. Next up is a horrendous cover of “Media Person” by RUDIMENTARY PENI. Some may think that it’s a good, or even an original idea to do an RP song in shitty ska-punk style. Not me, though – I just think it’s terrible. The last song is back in the same vein as the first track (although thankfully with much better lyrics, dealing with American imperialism). The best part about this track was the fact that Diana Mayora from SKELPTARSIS does the second vocals, and I think she fucking rules. I really wish Sturgeon would have stuck to guitar only and let Diana take over. Final verdict – better than most STAR FUCKING HIPSTERS material, but still leaves much to be desired. At this point you know who this band is – you like ‘em or you don’t.
JESUS FUCKING CHRIST take the B-side in a much better direction, sounding like a cross between the best of ‘90s east coast punk (PIST, AUS-ROTTEN, BROKEN) and ‘90s East Bay punk (GRIMPLE, FILTH) with a modern edge. Yeah, this is the shit! There is nothing cartoony about this band, they just bring straight-forward punk rage without any gimmicks or nonsense. I’m sad to say that this is the first time I’ve ever heard JFC, but after hearing their side of this split, I need to hear more! Their side is well worth the price of admission. Cheers! (Inbred)

1 TERLARANG / JAGERNAUT split EP

  • October 23, 2012
  • by damieninbred
  • · Reviews

TERLARANG are a fastcore band from Malaysia on the political side of the hardcore spectrum, which I can always appreciate. Granted, fastcore isn’t usually my bag, but I can appreciate it in small bursts such as their side of this split. It’s not obnoxious like powerviolence, and the songs don’t all sound the same. The vocals remind me of CRUCIAL UNIT, although with more blast beats. Anti-society and anti-authoritarian lyrics make this one a surefire winner.
On the flip side is Greece’s JAGERNAUT, who play gruff crust-core, very much in the style of DISRUPT. No lyrics are included, but considering the political landscape in Greece right now, it’s fair to say that these punks fall into the anarchist camp (the song titles, “Hatred”, “Voice Less Leaders”, and “Dead Sect” give that impression as well). JAGERNAUT only play three songs, but they all fucking rule. I also hear some mid-90s Montreal crust creeping in here – GLOBAL HOLOCAUST, specifically. That ain’t a bad thing.
I always like it when two bands who sound very different put out a split together. It goes to show that the spirit of DIY crosses silly subgenre borders. This is a killer record for sure – go pick it up at once! (Inbred)

7 NOISE COMPLAINT – Fuck Off and Thrash EP

  • October 23, 2012
  • by damieninbred
  • · Reviews

Here comes NOISE COMPLAINT straight outta the UK, skatin’ and thrashin’ up a storm. They play fast, snotty hardcore in the “I don’t give a fuck” 80s style. This sounds like it should have come out of the Midwest in 1982, instead of London in 2012. I’m not really into the whole rehashing of the 80s hardcore thing, but this really isn’t that bad. High energy, and on a 7” format at 45 rpm, there isn’t enough time to become boring at all. I’ll bet these dudes are killer live. However… Lyrically, this is apolitical as hell… sometimes to the point of being over the top offensive. Case in point, the lyrics to the song “Religious Fuck”, which blatantly fantasize the raping of a nun. Look – I despise religion as much as the next punk, but I will not support anything that promotes rape of any sort. Not fuckin’ cool, dudes. Too bad about that, because if it weren’t for that song, I’d definitely recommend this record for your non-political thrashing needs. However, since I’m too “PC” to recommend pro-rape bullshit, I’d advise you to skip this and check out some of the other killer bands on Suburban White Trash instead. (Inbred)

Never heard of this band before but finding out more about them, this band is from Helsinki, Finland.  Apparently they do not play any shows. This is some down and gritty punk rock reminds me a lot of the Sub/hum/ans or Citizen Fish. A total of 4 tracks. Amazing guitar riffs are in the first song “48 Balls” next up is “You know What You Are” again another gritty punk rock song.  Now it’s time to flip over to the B-Side the first song on the b-side is “Who Wants it All” a very different start to this side not a very punky song kinda sounds like an 80’s song with the low vocals and kinda a keyboard sounding guitar/drum combination. Finally the last song is called “Strength Through Noise” very much like the last song with vocals but very strong guitar and more screaming then singing.  This is an amazing release I really hope the band sees this and will send me there first 3 e.p.’s because i would really like to check them out-(XbezerkerX)

0 Messengers-Demo 2012 cd-r Review

Well what I got here is a 2 song demo from MESSENGERS.  First  track is called “Laid To Waste” which is a nice minute and a half of very fast guitar riffs with some very angry vocals laid down on top of it reminds me of INTEGRITY. Pretty much any hardcore band that is coming out right now very heavy and very angry and very well put together. Track number 2 is called “Rotting Away” which is the better of both songs.  This would go perfect on a Toxic Breeds Funhouse Comp.  So if you’re into heavy, dark, angry hardcore with the breakdowns this is for you. I do apologize though I do not have any info for the band no site no nothing. (XbezerkerX)

Spreading Evictions is a two piece crust band from California is what I found out there is no info on the cd or outside cover.  It was really hard to tell what there name is by there logo all I could read out was egoism on the cover. So after all that I put the cd in to listen to it and all the tracks are instrumental which are not bad but there’s no vocals and to me why make music without vocals it has no meaning then. All 7 tracks sound pretty much the same. Crust without vocals what’s the point? (XbezerkerX)

First nice screenprinted cover inside and out.  Second stamped center labels if this isn’t DIY then what is?  So I put this record on the player and wow this is some very heavy and very fast music. Starting off the record is a song called “Abwesend” no clue what it means but it’s an amazing start to this record. Next is “No Time” a little slower then the first song but equally heavy very thrashy feel for the guitar and very doomy vocals. I am loving this so far time to flip this record over. The secod side starts off with “Licht” which the record is named after and this song does not disappoint .  This has a very good sound to it reminds me of ENGLISH DOGS. Lastly there is “Stuff V” a last helping of doomy thrash to leave you wanting more from these guys.  Be on the lookout for these guys in America. (BerzerkerX)

Here is a nice slab of wax all the way from Japan the only English on the record is there name and what the 7 inch is called.  Other then that everything else is in Japanese so this 7 inch has 2 songs couldn’t tell you the names but the a side is awesome very relaxing and calm song. The B side is very upbeat and poppy so I would assume that this is a very pop punk song it’ll have you tapping your feet to the beat of the music  again very easy on the ears. I really wish I knew what they were saying.  All the info I could find was the labels website. So go check out the label and pick this up if you’re into feeling happy and joyful. (XbezerkerX)
