Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

This four piece band from Toronto, Ontario is two males and two females who play some catchy punk rock, not too sloppy, but not too neat and tidy. They play with abandon and pure fun, you can hear it in all of the songs on here from start to finish. You get six catchy punk songs on this EP which are played fast, but not fast enough to be classified as hardcore, just fun, fast paced punk, something I never can get enough of and wish that more bands played like this instead of lame pop punk. The songs are mostly short with only two around the three minute mark, which was nice, but I was wanting more, which is a good thing, so hurry up and get more tunes out there! The production was pretty good, with clarity in the mix and enough space to give everyone there spot to be heard. I think that this was a really good EP and I’m really looking forward to hearing more from them in the future. (Rick E.)

0 RAD ‎– This Is Not A Final War – Cassette Demo

  • November 21, 2012

This cassette is eleven songs of super blazing fast hardcore/thrash from this four piece band from Sacramento, CA. They have a female vocalist, but she doesn’t shriek like a lot seem to do when doing this kind of music, but she makes it work with her aggression on this release. Not one song on here is over forty-five seconds and the shortest are under or around ten seconds long, so you know there is nothing wasted on here in getting the message across. The band just pummels away behind the vocalist and creates a swirling slam fest that zips by so fast that you have to listen again and again to it. The production is average, but it doesn’t really take too much away from this one. I’m hoping to hear more from them in the future and see where they go. (Rick E.)

0 Looking Back on The Occupy Movement – An Interview

  • November 20, 2012
  • by PE Admin
  • · News · Radness

1. Your assessment of the Occupy movement was very positive. What is the overall perception you have of this movement today? What is left of Occupy?

There is not much left of the Occupy movement as such — almost all the encampments were destroyed in November or December 2011 and virtually no new ones have emerged. On the other hand, the movement was in no way “defeated.” With few exceptions, the people arrested were quickly released and totally exonerated. The elimination of the encampments simply had the effect of forcing the participants onto other, more diverse terrains of struggle. Countless people all over the country continue to meet regularly, to network with each other and to carry out all sorts of actions — picketing banks, disrupting corporate board meetings, blocking home foreclosures, protesting environmental policies (Monsanto, Tar Sands Pipeline, fracking, etc.), in addition to more specifically “occupy” type actions such as attempting to take over and reopen schools and libraries that have been closed and abandoned, or “Homes Not Jails” attempted takeovers of vacant housing to provide dwellings for homeless people. One of the most interesting and well planned of these latter types of actions, “Occupy the Farm,” took place just a few blocks from my home last April, when ecological activists took over a large plot of vacant urban land and turned it into a community garden, planting more than ten thousand seedlings in the space of a few days. The gardener-occupiers were driven out after three weeks, but the agitation continues and has resulted in a temporary victory against a planned commercial development. [November note: Since the completion of this interview the immense disaster relief work of Occupy Sandy is yet another very important and exemplary development.]

The Occupy movement already had the implicit goal of “reclaiming the commons” — occupying public squares or parks played on this theme, since regardless of quibbles about permits it was obvious that such spaces belong to the public and are, or at least originally were, intended for public use. But these more recent actions have the merit of challenging the fetish of private property in a more direct manner. That fetish has always been extremely strong in the United States, and the police responses to its transgression have always been more immediate and brutal. But I like to hope that these types of actions will eventually weaken the fetish, just as happened in the days of the Civil Rights movement. Back in the 1950s and 1960s, when black people first started restaurant sit-ins, one often heard this argument: “That restaurant belongs to the owner, he has the right to do whatever he wants with it, including deciding who he wants to serve.” But as more and more people kept peacefully sitting in and calmly accepting arrest, the general public was gradually brought around to the idea that there was a “higher law” than property rights — that other rights also had to be respected, such as the right to be treated fairly as a human being. I think this may eventually happen with these post-Occupy invasions of various types of property, as people see the absurdity of there being millions of vacant buildings while there are millions of people living in the streets. Even now many people sympathize with the idea of defending a family against foreclosure, despite the fact that a bank technically owns the home, because there is increasing awareness that the banks have often acted illegally. The notion of reopening abandoned schools, etc., is even more exemplary in that it hints at the notion of a society based on cooperation and generosity rather than on how much money can be made from something.

The two drawbacks of these types of action are that they are risky and that they thus tend to be the work of a small minority (mostly young and mostly male). Occupying public spaces is much more likely to attract the sympathy, the support, and ultimately the participation of multitudes of ordinary people (including parents, children, elderly, disabled). But for those who want to push the limits and don’t mind the risks, taking over vacant buildings and opening them up to public uses is much more challenging and inspiring than breaking windows.

Not So Sweet As You Think album cover

This three-piece punk band from Italy formed in 2010 and stayed together until 2012 and then changed the guitarist and then put out this four track EP. The first year they played fifty-six gigs, and some were with the MISFITS, MARKY RAMONE’s BLITZKRIEG, and the VIBRATORS. The EP starts off on a nice fast pace with the song “R U Ready” and keeps up the pace all the way through to the last track “Antisex”. The vocals are nice and rough, a little scratchy, kind of like found on the PLASMATICS old albums, but with their own feel to them, the band charges through the songs with energy and life, that it made me want to hear more of this band. This two male, one female band seem to be having a lot of fun on here and it shows, they really love what they are doing. The lyrics are in English and this is worth the hunting around that I did to find it. A very good release from a band that I will be keeping my eye on. (Rick E.)

0 SHUT UP SIDNEY – … And Then the World Raped Itself CD

  • · Reviews · Uncategorized

This four piece hardcore/punk band from Houston, TX has thirteen tracks on their new release, with a bonus track at the end making for fourteen tracks of DEAD KENNEDYS inspired tunage. The guitars buzz, the drummer thrashes away behind, the bass keeping up nicely and the singer who has a bit of the Jello waver in his voice at times is spitting out a lot of venom during the whole thing. They have some really cool lyrics that you can get off of their Facebook page about how “Pop-Punk Must Die”, on “Perry” the sing the praises of Governor Rick Perry, (they really hate him), they sing about the crap of the wars we’re stuck in on “$9.11”, the song “Monotony” has the SEX PISTOLS song “Problems” feel to the repetition of the way they keep singing “Monotony”, of course the strong anti religious lyrics on here, and a ton of other great songs. This brings me back to the old days of the 80’s when bands would have so much anger and wanted people to think for themselves, I’ve missed this. The production is a bit raw and it took me a second or two to get into it, mostly because a lot is so over produced nowadays, but since this is punk, fuck it, I liked it! I’m glad there are bands out there, especially in tight ass Texas, that want to get in your face and make you think. This one blazes by pretty quick even though there are some longer songs, but they get you caught up in their fury that you lose track of time. On a side note, I have a cat named Sydney and the phrase “SHUT UP SYDNEY” has been said around my house lots of times, so I had to look into these guys, who got their name from the SEX PISTOLS.  This is available from the band and they are looking at putting this out digitally. Definitely pick this one up, go to their Facebook and give them some love, for their hate. (Rick E.)

0 THE REBEL SPELL – It’s A Beautiful Future CD/Download

This four piece from East Vancouver, BC Canada really surprised me with this release. I have heard their name before, but never heard their music, I’m sorry that this has happened because this is a fantastic album! They come at you from the start with twelve tracks with such power and it just made me take in all the nuances that are here. You get the awesome bass guitar work throughout the album, the fast licks thrown out by the guitarist, the unrelenting pounding of the drummer, and the more surprising things, like the violin on the track “Uncontrollable”, and the keys on “It Can’t Be Just Me” and “The World Turned Upside Down” are all such nice surprises on a punk album, the album even ends with a cover of a peaceful acoustic protest song by LEON ROSSELSON, “The World Turned Upside Down” which was also covered by BILLY BRAGG. The album is just so damn catchy, with some great gang vocals and some great whoa-ohs, but it isn’t wimpy in any way, just a solidly played album and the production is nice and tight, letting everyone get their instruments in and with clarity which makes you want to start singing along with them and playing the air instrument of your choice. This band could become really popular, but not in the obnoxious way, the kind that the cool kids know them and support the shit out of them. You need to get this one and just crank the fuck out of it! I need their older releases now…..damn you!!!!!  (Rick E.)

Pharmcists

From the ashes of the THE SPLINTS come the PHARMACISTS with four songs of gritty punk rock and roll. Each track is about 3-4 minutes and have a certain rawness that has a little bit of a MISFITS feel, but without Glenn’s annoying voice(that’s right, I don’t care for the MISFITS. Not much of a CLASH fan either. What?!) There’s a nice balance of upbeat music writing with harsh life lyrics. This aspect reminds me of the ALKALINE TRIO, but less depressing and pretty absent of romance. All the songs are catchy memorable and totally the kind of band you’d want to see while knocking back a few at the bar on a summer afternoon. For a debut, this is pretty sweet. Great recording and mix with straight forward musicianship. Midway through track two the bass tone is killer. Not sure why that stuck with me so much, but the overall sound quality is perfect for their style. No lyrics are included, but it’s not like deciphering a metal album. The artwork is kept simple: x-ray photo on the cover and disc tray and band photo inside. Oh, if you live in the D.C. area, they are looking for a second guitarist.(Jake)

Oh man another little gem from these guys.  A little more info on BILL BONDSMEN, they are from Detroit, Michigan and have been a band since 2002. Here is a rad new 7 inch again an awesome record with a screen printed cover and painted with water colors it look/feels like.  Again 2 songs one on each side with a large hole in the middle only this time I didn’t get a colored vinyl 😦  But nonetheless still really like this album.  Sounds like these were recorded at the same time very lo-fi vocals, gritty and very raw with plastering guitar coming at you. “Overcrowded Control” has a nice up and down bass in it reminds me of a circus jam or something.  B-side is “Untitled”  and it must be for a reason, vocals come in about a minute and a half into the song and is very heavy compared to the A-side, this could have easily been the A-side of the record. Again go get this record if your into gritty punk that sounds like it was recorded in a basement. Top image is from the interweb, Bottom is what my record looks like. (XbezerkerX)

First off I love this band had the pleasure of seeing them once in St. Paul.  IN DEFENCE opened up for them and it was awesome.  So when I got this you can’t imagine how excited I was.  So this record has 2 songs 1 on each side, so kind of a sweet throwback to 45’s large hole included. When I first got the record I noticed that it has a screenprinted cover which is awesome plus it’s on a dark purple wax.  So with this release there are 2 bad ass tunes first is “Nineteen”.  A really good distorted vocals with blistering guitar behind very low-fi recording sounds very DIY to me.  Like they recorded it in a basement or something.  Side B is called “Things Fall Apart” the shorter of the two tracks but still has the low-fi recording quality with gritty vocals.  Any punk rocker would like this f you like fast gritty fast punk rock plus when the B side stop it has a repeating groove which are always funny to have on a record.  I LOVE BILL BONDSMEN that is all.  (XbezerkerX)

Punk Rock parenting certainly offers it’s challenges. As your kids try to find their way in the world and are presented with the challenge of trying to identify with potential friends that most likely come from very different religious and political backgrounds they have their struggles and ask lots of questions.  These issues help to complicate the already complicated task of raising children.  Throw a divorce into the mix and now you are trying to scale Mount Everest in a denim vest and a worn out pair Vans.

Probably one of the hardest parts of being divorced is trying to deal with the kids when they are acting up and fighting.  There is no one there to help you, to help separate the little hellions or to even bring any calm to a situation. It can get rough and it often ends with people getting sent to their room, sometimes that’s me!  Sometimes you just have to step back or step away and take a breather.

As difficult as it’s been their Mom and I have both really tried hard to put the kids first and not put them between us.  I think we have all seen too many of our friends take that too common path where the kids become bargaining chips and not respected for the people they are.  I’m not a hater, I get mad or upset, but I don’t hate.  I process my emotions and recognize them for they are and more on.  We’ve remained friendly and civil, it is hard work sometimes.  Being an asshole would be way easier, but it’s not all about me, or her.  It’s about those two little people who deserve happiness, compassion and love.  They don’t need two immature “adults” hurling insults at each other or using them as leverage to spite the other.

There is always the “silver lining” to any situation and I think the silver lining here is my daughter and my relationship.  I’ve always bought an extra concert ticket to the big shows knowing that people don’t always have the money handy when the event goes on sale, but will be able to get it together later and pay me back.  Well sometimes they pay me back.  Fucken’ jerks.  Sometimes that “extra” ticket would be set aside for my then wife while she decided if she wanted to go or not.  Now that I was in a situation where that was not in cards I thought, as the summer concerts were going on sale, that I would meet a nice girl and probably take this unknown person to the show with me.

Well sine I seem to socially inept and have not pursued the “dating scene” I didn’t have anyone to take that extra ticket.  When you are a 41 year old punk rock, metal dude, how do you date?  This is a fairly small city, there are not a lot people out there in this age range that want to hang out with a guy that has dedicated his life to staying a kid, worshipping music and playing laptop politician.  This is full blown subject here…We’ll move on for the sake of sparing you all my problems!

It started with seeing Van Halen.  Actually that was my Dad’s ticket, he had a doctor’s appointment and couldn’t make it over for the show.  There was no one to take and I just couldn’t see letting a ticket to see Van Halen go to waste.  A lot of my friends are too “punk” or “metal” to appreciate VAN HALEN.  But at some point I had a revelation…Take Evelyn!  This was a big, “safe” concert.  Not a punk show in a dirty, smelly, garage space with beer drinking and weed smoking everywhere.  This was a big, overpriced, sports arena filled with middle-aged drunks and pot-heads who only get out once or twice a year and use an event like this to go bat-shit crazy.  Like I said it was safe.

So the decision was made to take young Evie and her 10 year-old self to see one of the greatest hard/arena rock bands ever.  This isn’t a review of the show so lets skip the details other than that she fell asleep!  She fell asleep ¾’s the way through the show.  Did she not understand the importance of this event?  Did she not understand that seeing Dave and Eddie on the same stage wasn’t something that happens all the time?  Come on!!!  I tried to wake her but it was not happening…Oh well.  She seemed to enjoy herself but when asked what she thought she said it was “okay”…But she was right.  Diamond Dave kinda’ sucked.  I guess it was only kind of “oaky”.

My kids sing along to ‘Sails of Charon’ all the time.  Even though I had already seen the SCORPIONS once on their farewell tour I couldn’t pass up a chance to see them again at Red Rocks.  Knowing that Red Rocks was awesome and the SCORPIONS are awesome it seemed awesome to invite Evie to go this awesome event.   Someday she will look back and be able to share stories with her friends of seeing this legendary band at this legendary venue.   As the bootleg t-shirt guy was making his rounds through the parking lot we grabbed her a tour shirt (she was wore her GHOST shirt to the show) and headed into the venue.  Red Rocks is a magnificent venue and you can see just about anyone there and it is cool.  I even saw the Red Rocker there one time.  In any other situation Sammy Hagar is not cool, but at Red Rocks he kicked ass!  With that said she was not impressed by TESLA and thought the SCORPIONS were “okay”…The fact that people fly from all over the world to see their favorite bands play this venue did not have any impact on her. Man this kid is hard to impress.

I have some issues with IRON MAIDEN and more importantly Bruce Dickinson, especially now that it has come to light that he is a war profiteer selling his drones to the US Army.  I wasn’t even sure if I was gonna go to the show and money was starting to get tight but my buddy sprung for MAIDEN tickets.  The lawn seats at Fiddler’s are generally “affordable” and since I didn’t pay for my ticket anyway I thought Evie might want to go.  Just days before the show an IRON MAIDEN concert came up on some cable channel so the kids and I watched it while we folded laundry.   Evelyn seemed genuinely excited when I asked if she wanted to go.  And I was excited too.  We were really starting to bond as we’d reminisce about the other concerts we had been to especially after she would see one of their videos on Metal Mania.

At MAIDEN Evie scored another parking lot tour shirt and got a pretzel and a Coke.  She was feeling pretty cool but was getting antsy and restless as we suffered through the opening band.  She was complaining about how tired she was but this quickly went away as IRON MAIDEN hit the stage.  She hadn’t seen a show with pyro yet and was quickly won over by IRON MAIDEN’s stage show.  When Eddie’s head opened up and fire came out she squeezed my hand and said “Dad, this is AWESOME!”.   Yeah it was…And the show was cool too.

So we wrapped up the summer concert season with KISS and MOTLEY CRUE.  This was especially cool because my Dad was going too.  3 generations of my family and we were going to see one of my favorite bands ever.  I am a huge CRUE fan and Evie knows this.  I used to be a huge KISS fan but…Gene Simmons…Fuck that guy!  We listen to lots of MOTLEY around the homestead and both kids sing along.  The 5 year old loves ‘Shout at the Devil’ and ‘Looks that Kill’ and is more vocal about his interest in CRUE, PRIEST and SABBATH, where Evie is a little shier.  But since we already had a track record of shows together I figured she’s be in and because it was MOTLEY and the “guys who paint their faces like clowns” she seemed pretty damn excited.

Now here is another sidebar….How fucking lucky am I to be able to get to go to an awesome concert with my Dad and my daughter.  Most families are too generationally split.  But here we are, the three of us with our devil horns in the air shouting along to ‘Shout at the Devil’.  Bad ass!  The family that rocks together walks together!  (The first time I ever saw my Dad put his hands up in the universal-heavy metal-devil-horns-way we were at a BLUE OYSTER CULT /CHEAP TRICK show and I about fell over laughing!  How rad was that?  The old man is hailing Satan!  AWESOME!)

The show was a total kick in the ass and all three of us really enjoyed the spectacle as well as our time together.  Evie and I agreed that MOTLEY CRUE stole the show, my Dad sided with KISS.  Evelyn still brings it up and we talk about how rad it was.  She got an “official” shirt at this show and wears it to school.  She gets comments from teachers and other parents like “I saw MOTLEY CRUE once…” it embarrasses her but she always tells me about it.

The time together is so positive but another thing to make note of is her growing appreciation for music.  The other day we were watching a BLACK SABBATH DVD from a 1978 performance and she asked me if I had ever seen BLACK SABBATH.  I replied that I had seen them a couple of times and she asked “Was it amazing?”.  And then she went into a little tale of how she just couldn’t believe she got to see MOTLEY CRUE and KISS.  She was starting to not only appreciate the show but was starting to understand the significance of some of these bands. She asked if SABBATH was “amazing” because she was starting to understand that they couldn’t be anything less than amazing.  She was starting to understand some of the legend that some of these bands possess.

I cannot forget though that she is her own person.  People ask me “what are you going to do if she likes Taylor Swift?”  I reply that I will buy her the CD and take her to the concert.  Who am I to say what she can and can’t listen to?  If she was into like gore or porno grind I might have some concerns but I don’t give a fuck about Taylor Swift.  If she feels it and it makes her feel good than more power to her.  And for the record she does like Taylor Swift.

This year Evelyn is playing  the saxophone in her 5th grade band.  I was so excited to hear that she wanted to join band.  She is doing really well and is at the top of her band class!  I’ve heard her on the keyboard and drums too! She was playing some song on a toy keyboard and I asked her where she learned it.  She said she had just figured it out!  Wow!  The same happened with the drums.  I think I was getting out of the shower or something and I could hear this beat.  I thought my brother had stopped by and was kicking out some beats on the kids’ drum set.  I rounded the corner and it was Evelyn sitting there!  Holy shit!  The kid was playing a simple yet fluid beat making use of the kick drum, snare and cymbal.  I was thoroughly impressed but of course my excitement embarrasses her and causes her to stop.  Oh well…

I think since the divorce Evelyn and my relationship has grown stronger.  Too often divorce can pull a child away from a parent but I think for us we are in a good place.  I look forward to more concerts, hikes and bike rides with her and her brother.  I’m really excited to take Johnnie to a concert.  The other day he asked if we could go see BLACK SABBATH.  Fuck yeah!   (Josh Mosh)

End Notes:

  1.  I cant wait for the Hobbit movie.  We’ve been reading the book, watching the animated movie from when I was a kid and listening to the record.  So stoked!
  2. So we didn’t vote for the guy who supports big business, the banks, war and drones.  We voted for the other guy that supports big business, the banks and drones.  I guess we can take solace in that it seems like Obama is more in tune with social issues.  I guess  that was enough to offset his war mongering and clinch the election.   Hooray for the two party system!  Fuck…
  3. It blows my mind how the mainstream media seems to support Israel and their attacks on the Palestinians.  I can’t stand the media!  So much disinformation!  The New York Times admitted they bounce everything off the White House before publishing it!  And they are generally thought of as being the “fairest” newspaper in the country.  WTF?
  4. The APEX record is starting to sound killer! I can’t wait to get this thing released!  2013!!!
