Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

Once you read that this band has members of MOB 47 and  WARVICTIMS, you know what you’re about to get before you even drop the needle. I was expecting raw, but this is really fucking raw. It’s everything you could possibly want in raw Swedish punk, including guitar tone that sounds more like a chainsaw than a guitar at times. Did they cut all the bass and mids while cranking up the treble and distortion? Whatever. Either way, all six songs are pure ripping punk that only veterans of the genre could possible pull off without sounding strained or shitty. This 7″ is brutally honest and heartfelt and isn’t looking to gain scene points or make friends. And as much as the music kicked my ass, it’s the lyrics that make this an instant favorite. The first song questions the reasoning behind over te top band names and logos, which gave me a chuckle because it’s become such a shitstorm. Track two is about the documentary Deliver Us From Evil about the catholic priest that molested kids and instead of being held accountable, was just moved from perish to perish. Fucker. Then on to a song about giving in to technology, cell phones in particular, instead on continuing to fight against mainstream culture. Being guilty of this myself, it really made me stop and think. The B side is just as ferocious. I realize I could go on and on, but I’ll just sum it up. Te topics brought up on this side are the fact that we don’t seem to understand that this is the only planet w have and we are totally fucking it up, the Swedish parlament wasting a shit ton of money and space while some people have no place to sleep and nothing to eat and the last track is about how democracy is lost and is just a term thrown around without substance. The lyrics are all in Swedish and have an English summery afterward on a simple photocopied foldout that has a few pictures, band info, contacts and thank yous. This record is short, sweet and to the point. Fucking brilliant. (Jake)

Never heard of either of these bands before  and I’m kind of glad I got to.  First side of the split you here KRIMTANK .  KRIMTANK are a punk band from Sweden who play really fast and catchy/distorted punk rock.  Kind of sounds like it was recorded in a basement or practice space all the noise you can hear in the background makes it for a very nice raw sound.  I wouldn’t want to say it’s pure fastcore stuff but the songs are very short and to the point. The other side you hear is  FIVE FINGER DISCOUNT a much different style then KRIMTANK.  FIVE FINGER DISCOUNT plays a really good rock n roll style kind of Rockabilly mixed with early country sound, which they play really really good.  A total of 2 song that they contribute, I’m wishing that there was more that’s how good it is.  I couldn’t find any links to FIVE FINGER DISCOUNT I found a myspace link for KRIMTANK.  Also this was put out on PIKE RECORDS in the UK and I couldn’t find a page for them but found a lot of distros that have this in stock so I’d say pick this up for the  FIVE FINGER DISCOUNT side if nothing else.  (XbezerkerX)

Jump in the pit and fuck some shit up, this record is balls to the wall punk rock.  Tons of crazy energy coming out of my speakers right now.  Very fast and nasty vocals and pounding guitar behind it makes this an awesome release.  Kind of bummed that this is only 3 songs but all 3 of these songs sound amazing.  If you’re a fan of punk rock then you’ll love this record.  The B-side of this record “The Other” starts off with a nice bass intro into guitar then the drums start into something really heavy, about 2 ½ minutes into the song then the vocals kick in at it is amazing. My favorite song on this 7 inch is “The Other” and you should go check these guys out Midwestern punk soon to blow up.  Just check out the label they’re on with good backing and a solid tour that would put these guys on the map. Also if you’re lucky enough to snag one on white vinyl cheers to ya!  (XbezerkerX)

0 Last Under The Sun – ‘Hooligan Jihad’ Review

  • December 8, 2012

  • · Reviews

Hooligan Jihad
Pollution spills from industry, then forcibly spews it’s sewage into our atmosphere. Religious war and depression weighs heavily on us, this is our neoteric genre. In the meantime, as you trudge through this cold December, all you hear everywhere is the jingle-jangle of christmas songs. Pass the ‘Hooligan Jihad’ EP please, I need a hit of reality.

On this EP, Last Under The Sun deliver five songs of terror and the harsh realities of life. In that same apocalyptically bleak way that bands like the Subhumans and Crass have done in the past. But they are singing about our current day in a direct way “how many people die, for a worthless cause… I dont wanna die in some desert war”. It is all about our politically violent world, but at times it’s done with some humor like on the song ‘Hooligan Jihad’. How can you forget the lyrics “You can’t play crust in fucking flip-flops…”.

Frantic and pissed off, members also make up Birmingham’s infamous Police Bastard, who had a split with War//Plague on Profane Existence last year. Which is no surprise as you could draw parallels in the style they play. Very much a no excuses crust styled hardcore with it’s roots firmly in DIY hardcore punk. There certainly is great production and tight musicianship on this too, without losing a raw punk sound. There are great elements to this like on the song ‘Beautane’, which made my dog twist her head in strange ways in trying to decipher what the sounds were. It has gloom-ridden sounds and samples, Big Black/Ministry instrumental like playing making it more dense and machine-like at times. You could never say Last Under The Sun are following any particular music genre with tracks like this. It is a serious gem of a track with added post-apocalyptic ambient sound effects. But that ambience is well and truly broken when ‘Hooligan Jihad’ breaks into high gear. Well worth checking out.

I had the pleasure of doing an interview with Chad Malone, the vocalist and guitarist with Tulsa, Oklahoma’s premier Oi! band, The Shame. You might know him from political crust bands like BROTHER INFERIOR, ASSEMBLY OF GOD or BRING DOWN THE HAMMER. This three piece band plays with conviction and has lyrics that deal with getting through life, and of course, drinking. You can’t go wrong with their first CD, The Plan, or their new 7″ single out on Profane Existence called “The World Is Ours”. It’s the first 7″ single on Profane Existence’s Limited Edition 7″ Singles Series. So pull a pint of your favorite brew, imported if possible, turn on the football, crank up the tunes from The Shame and read on!

I came from the metal scene but was drawn to the aggression of punk and thrash early on. It seemed like I was always looking for the next, faster thing. I got into Iron Maiden at age 11 and soon found Metallica (in 1984) and it wasn’t long until I got into everything from Cryptic Slaughter to The Damned to Motorhead. And yes, very much I listen to all of those early records still today.

What bands were you in before this and do you still hang out with those people/have music from them still?

I’ve been doing bands for ages and have had a lot of luck in being able to do a lot with them. I was in Bring Down the Hammer, Assembly of God, the Leveling, Brother Inferior and I still do Larkin. Ironically enough, I knew both o

f the members of the Shame from bands I was in early on. Josh and I were in a crossover/metal band called Mad Arab in 1986, and Giss and I were in Concept of Nonsense and Unsociety back in 1989/90.

1/2 C water
2 C brown sugar
1T vanilla
3 1/8C flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
5 tsp finely ground espresso

1 bag dairy free chocolate chips

Pre heat oven to 350F. Let the margarine sit out and get a little soft. While that is going on, mix the egg replacer and water together and let sit for about 10 minutes to get nice and thick. Cream together margarine, sugar, egg replacer and vanilla. Add salt and baking soda and espresso and mix thoroughly. Mix in flour. Start with ha little less flour and feel it out. Some flour is tougher to work than others, so you may not need all of it. If you haven’t snacked on all the chips, mix those in. Shape into 2″ balls and flatten out to about half an inch thick and bake for 15-20 minutes depending on how well your oven works. When they come out, give the pan a good smack on the counter. Trust me, it’s good for the texture.

What or who got you into punk at first?

Ironically enough, I knew both of the members of the Shame from bands I was in early on. Josh and I were in a crossover/metal band called Mad Arab in 1986, and Giss and I were in Concept of Nonsense and Unsociety back in 1989/90.

How did you guys get together?

Over the last few years, I would continually run into JT down at the bar, and we’d sit and talk about the old days and all that. Both of us, still being into old school punk rock and soccer, we started throwing out the idea of doing this kind of band. Originally was wanted some of the old N.O.T.A. dudes to play with us, but it just didn’t work out unfortunately. Then, about the same time, I heard from Kevin and we talked about just getting together for a laugh about the old times. Once we threw the band idea at him, he was all in and The Shame was born.

59000_422889621099667_1846024587_n What kind of jobs do you guys have?

I’ve been at the same job since 1996, I work at a liquor distributor, (real shocker that one…)

Who does the writing of the music/lyrics?

So far, I have. Usually I throw an (almost) complete idea out and we’ll work on it, with the band as a whole, making the final decision on how much it sucks.

What kind of process is it?

With all the previous bands I’ve been in, I tend to do a lot of the writing and for me, it’s usually just something will hit me, then I’ll grab a drink, sit in a corner and see if I can hammer it out.

Is everyone into futball/soccer and favorite teams?

We’ll excluding the Brother Inferior years when I toured a lot and I just didn’t want to concern myself with it, I’ve played since I was young. I still suit up for my local pub team Kilkenny’s Express. And as far as support… Arsenal, since I was a boy. But I do have a soft spot for Celtic and the team around where my mother was born, VfB Stuttgart. But it should be noted, that we, as a band, unite under the banner of the Tulsa Roughnecks. I think we all 3 grew up going to those games in the early 80’s.

579853_394525060602790_536366164_n

Ever gone to a game before?

Certainly, like I said, I think we all grew up going to Roughneck matches, and I did have the luxury of flying to London, to Highbury to see Arsenal. It was Legend!! Bergkamp, Henry, Pires, Ljungberg… genius!

What kind of lyrics do you guys mostly write about and why?

We decided early on that we just wanted to focus on what our lives were really like. Soccer, beer, work and being old… I’ve always had political bands going and working class politics have always been important to me, but the focus in the Shame was set to just be “everyday life” kinda stuff. And what really sums us up, is working all week, grabbing a couple of beers and watching the match.

How long are your tours? Do you play a lot of shows?

We’re all over 40 and JT and Giss have families at home, so trying to tour has kinda been out of the question. We have just been playing regularly in Tulsa and trying to book surrounding cities. We’re thinking, more realistically, we can do short regional tours or festivals if we can get on them. So far, we’ll see… really as a band, we’re just getting started.

149447_347227901999173_378969031_nWho have you played with?

We just did a great show with the Queers, we played with Against Empire and recently we did a great gig with the Downtown Struts. But mainly we just gig with our local friends like Spank, Streetlight Fight and Triple Fang.

How often do you get together to practice/write new songs?

We practice pretty regularly, once a week or so. We seem to come up with new tunes every few weeks. It really just depends ft something new comes to me or not.

What’s your favorite song to play? Least favorite song to play?

Meh, all our songs are awesome, but there might be some that are slightly more awesome than others!

Any bonehead violence/attitudes from so called fans?

Tulsa has a bad history with racist skinheads and such, and that was always a major turn off for me when it came to the Oi! music scene. I’ve always liked the music but hated what it was associated with around here. We don’t really see ourselves as a “political” band, however, we are all very anti racist and I think that is prevalent at our gigs. So far, we’ve had no trouble at all.

Favorite beer/least favorite beer?

600290_422157651172864_543464270_n

I’ve been a Guinness drinker for ages, but Boddingtons and Tetleys have been my choices lately. At rehearsal we’ve been doing a lot of cider, Strongbow being my choice there. But you’ll struggle to find a beer that gets passed up by the boys at a gig. We certainly love a Pabst every now and again, and if the bar says the band gets Natty Light, then so be it! Tonight, it’s Natty Light!

How long did the recording of the cd take? Any stories about the making of it?

This is our second time in the studio and we’re pretty straight forward about it. We even held off on the beer until we got to the backup vocals. The 7″ was done over just one day, so there really wasn’t time to mess around. I’ve done my last 8 recordings at Valcour and Hank and I have a good partnership so, it went real smooth. Sorry to say, no drunken chaos ensued. Until I got home and saw Arsenals recent form….

Any stories about the songs on your cd?

“The World is Ours” is just about daily struggle with work and trying to get by. About getting to the weekend, to just let out your frustrations with living paycheck to paycheck. Similarly, “For Football and the Pints” is about the things we do to make existence tolerable sometimes. For me, I could watch Michael Thomas score that goal in 1989 over and over and it always brings a grin. So, yeah, football, a couple of beers and some good music have gotten me through some rough times. “Nothing Gained”, I wrote after American Airlines laid off a bunch of workers. They were just cast aside like so many businesses do, and I just thought about what it would mean if that were me or any of my friends and “Kings of the Midwestern Plains”, I wrote it to finally dismiss the ugly past of racism in the Tulsa scene.

How has Zodiac Killer Records been for you?

Ron (SRP/ZKR) has been great; he stepped up and offered to put out ~ The Plan ~ when no one had ever heard us before. The disc has only been out a short while, but he has done everything he said he would and is working hard to help promote the disc. So, cheers to Ron! We owe him a couple of drinks for sure.

How did you get involved in doing the Profane Existence singles club?

I have a long history with Profane. When I was in Brother Inferior in the 90’s they helped us with gigs and distributing our records. They also put out our split 7″ with Whorehouse of Representatives. Since then, PE has always been supportive in all of the bands I’ve done and beyond that, I am glad to call them friends. Even in the Bring Down the Hammer days we came up and played the PE fest and ended up disco dancing to the Bee Gee’s with Chris (ATU) and Dan (PE). So, yeah…I am completely honored to have the Shame’s first 7″ on Profane. I can’t think of any other label I’d rather have it on.

How did you pick the songs for that release?

Honestly… they were the newest tunes we had, and we were thinking of doing a 7″ already with them, then Dan got in touch, so we went straight into the studio to record them. It was all a case of really good timing really.

Any more new releases coming out in the future?

We’ve been asked to be on the next Street Punk Comp by Pirates Press, but other than that, nothing yet… just writing and doing gigs when we can.

What is available now and where can we get it?

We have a selection of shirts and other merch you can get directly from us at either our Facebook page www.facebook.com/oitheshame or just send us an email at aogfc@yahoo.com. For the CD, people should contact our label, Skinhead Retirement Plan Records and Ron will take care of you. Or if you have itunes, you can find it on there for download.

Where do you see the band going in the future?

Probably just down the bar for a couple of drinks… beyond that, who knows?

So lets start off with FURLONG-Sex Bunker this is a nice little song with a repeating guitar riff  and some gritty vocals over that.  This song has some kind of keyboard effects in the middle of the song which makes me flashback to playing video games as a kid shooting stuff on Nintendo.  Basically the track is half song and half weird keyboard syth track all in all if you’re into the more modern hipster tracks that are coming out these days you’ll love this.  Now it’s time to flip this bad boy over to listen to SICK CITY FOUR.  There track is called “Burundi Punchclock” well not going to lie but if noisecore and jazz met and started to bang on drums and play there guitar all weird and added a horn section to randomly play together then you have this.  I really don’t know what to say just not my thing. This record does come with a digital download with bonus content and also comes on some sweet splatter vinyl. (XbezerkerX)

3721614072-1Queer-positive fastcore from Bloomington, IN. Is there slogan and it fits 12 very fast and pissed off songs standing up for equal human rights. Jumping right into this record is “Under The Radar” 50 seconds of pure of pissed off punk talking about bands reusing the recycling the same ideas and not make up there own.  One of my personal favorites is “Gay Majority” which they are talking about all the people out there talking about anti-gay camps and people out there trying to spread gods words about homosexuality.  The longest track on this record is a “WARPATH” cover of “Abomination” which I didn’t think would be as good as WARPATH but it was amazing.  This record has a screen printed cover and back also the B-side is screen printed clear vinyl with pink ink is what my copy looks like also there is a pink vinyl with pink ink as well. Stamped on the inner sleeve is the slogan “Reality is a cult, everything is a Conspiracy”.  Check these guys out follow the links and buy or download this!  (XbezerkerX)
