Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

    “Sermon for the Bootlickers”

Despite the inculcation of helplessness within each there remains great power. Ill at ease with such makes us ill. Learn to see the hand that feeds for what it is. You’ve been fooled if you think you’ve got no power. Refuse to be reduced to a consumer you’re a human being. Define yourself by more than wealth. Define yourself as a human. You don’t need what you’re being sold. Bend your knee to no authority but your own mind. You have the power to avoid the gilded trap. Avarice is what you’re conditioned for. Break the mold discover what’s really valuable to you.

943095_600692713275575_1470596277_nHailing from St. Paul Minnesota comes a 5 piece punk rock and roll band.  If there was one band to define the term Punk Rock & Roll here is the band. All sporting there jean jackets with there love for TURBONEGRO.  This cd kicks off with “Darkness Forever” and rocks all the way through to “Heavy Set Girls”.  The guitar intro to “Night of the GSD” reminds me a lot of BLUDWULF and a lot of the other guitar riffs remind me of them as well. “Vault 23” is a good through back to the spirit of Rock & Roll of the 80’s with its catchy lyrics and amazing bass riffs. If you like the guitar riffs of MOTORHEAD then “Hell Ride” is the song for you.  Personally knowing most of this band, they are a very hard working band and supportive of there scene by playing countless shows and very different venues around the Minneapolis/St. Paul area (including The Triple Rock Social Club, The 7th St. Entry, Memory Lanes, Station 4, The Fine Line, Memory Lanes and countless House and DIY spots) This gets the Bezerker stamp of approval PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE check this band out. The more I get from this label the happier I become.  Falter are a very fast hardcore band from Milwaukee Wisconsin.  Here is there 6 song demo, very lo-fi and heavy.  Guitars are smashing along with the drums very angry vocals on top of all that.  All in all not a bad demo very excited to hear more from these guys.(XbezerkerX)

a0224238639_2Damn the band is called STABLER who else watches Law and Order SVU like I do?  Maybe these guys?  STABLER hail from Louisville Kentucky and play a really fast clean form of powerviolence  and hardcore.  Most of the songs are less then a minute long and this will keep you raging for the entire 8 minutes a total of  10 tracks on different colored cassettes, think WEEKEND NACHOS but more understandable lyrically. You can go download this on REALITY IS A CULT bandcamp page for FREE but throw in some money to support an amazing DIY label.  Also check out there website for more awesome releases. (XbezerkerX)

0 THROUGH THORN AND BRIER: Interview

  • August 1, 2013
  • by harleytexas
  • · Uncategorized

I was very fortunate to do an interview with Bayonne, NJ’s THROUGH THORN AND BRIER. This hardcore band plays tight and heavy and will rattle your bones. Check them out at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Through-Thorn-and-Brier/192796371505, http://ttabhc.blogspot.com/ and http://throughthornandbrier.bandcamp.com/.

PE: What/who got you into punk / hardcore at first? What styles/types of punk / hardcore did you listen to at first and do you still listen to those types/styles today?
TTAB: We were all playing in small bands in high school that were going nowhere, and we quickly learned the type of music we wanted to create. The fact that we were surrounded by ordinaries really got us fueled and into punk and hardcore. The raw energy and passion we found in it was exactly what we wanted to capture in our music. We draw huge inspiration for bands like BLACK FLAG, THE MISFITS, CONVERGE, TRAGEDY and NEUROSIS. These bands, along with genre’s like d-beat, black metal and doom all helped mold the way we sound. Some might consider us a metal band, but at heart we are a hardcore punk band.
PE: How did you guys get together?
TTAB: We’ve all been friends and hung out since high school. We all shared a connection to music that we couldn’t really put our finger on. Finally, Justin and Mark started to play together in college and formed the foundation of TTAB. Ali and Peter joined shortly after and the sound of the band became more refined and the realization of where the band could go became clear.
PE: What kind of jobs do you guys have?
TTAB: We’re all slaves to the 9 to 5 grind, which makes the time and effort put into this band more important to us. It’d be a dream come true to tell our bosses to fuck off and just concentrate on the band 100%, but it’s currently not paying the bills.
PE: Who does the writing of the music / lyrics, and what kind of process is it?

TTAB: When it comes to writing our music, we are all participating. We’ll bounce ideas off each other and watch them evolve. We like to challenge each other. Mark handles the majority of the lyrics, with input from the rest of us as the songs progress.

PE: What kind of lyrics do you guys mostly write about and why?

TTAB: The lyrics are broad in terms of subject matter. With this new 12″, the songs range anywhere from something violent to something beautiful. The album isn’t conceptual, but there’s definitely a dark, underlying theme.

PE: Do you play a lot of shows?
TTAB: We play as many as we can, as often as we can. With the release of our new record, we’re really trying to push for as many shows as possible. Stay tuned.live005-2
PE: Best show that you’ve played?
TTAB: The first few shows we played as a full band in our friends houses we’re some of the best. The couple we played at 198 Orient in our hometown were ridiculous. They made us realize we wanted to do this all the time.
PE: Favorite songs to play?
TTAB: We love playing our new music the most.
PE: Least favorite songs to play?
TTAB: Honestly, we don’t have any songs we don’t enjoy playing.
PE: Favorite beer/least favorite beer?
TTAB: Ill Bill’s Chill IPA is the best. Nectar of the god’s type shit. We don’t like Murphy’s Stout. That junk tastes like motor oil.
PE: How long did the recording take? Any stories about the making of it?
TTAB: We recorded with Adam at Timber studio in Bayonne, NJ. It took a couple of weekends to get the whole record down. This was our second time working with him, so our confidence and the consumption of pulled pork sandwiches were at a maximum level.ttab-1
PE: Any more new releases coming out in the future?
TTAB: We’re currently working on news songs for some splits we plan on releasing ASAP.
PE: What is available now and where can we get it?
TTAB: We just released our new ’12, which we have available for order on WWW.TTABHC.COM
We have homemade tapes of Failure Prone available at shows too.
We also have cassettes of Good Grief EP available at WWW.BALDYLONGHAIR.COM
PE: Any shirts/pins/patches available?
TTAB: We just ran out of our first run of shirts, but we’ll be printing a few new ones by the time this interview hits the net. We have a bunch of pins and patches that you can just grab at a show or we’ll throw some in when you order a record from us online too. Keep your peepers peeled.
PE: Where do you see the band going in the future?

TTAB: Hopefully pretty far. We’re going to keep trying to push ourselves in the writing process of new music and put out some shit that will blow people away. We just want to keep playing as many shows as possible and eventually get a full U.S. tour going too.
PE: Anyone vegetarian/vegan?
TTAB: In the past yes, but not currently. Even though we’re not, we encourage everyone out there to consider and dabble in alternative diets and lifestyles at least once in their lives. Variety is the spice of life, and something as simple as what you eat can drastically change the way you live and help you better yourself.
PE: Any causes you’re into?
TTAB: Human extinction.
PE: Any funny or strange stories from your last tour?
TTAB: Our last tour was with our best friends LASTLETTERS. The tour and shows were pretty non-eventful. Nothing really crazy went down, but there were a lot of “this story doesn’t leave the van” type anecdotes. It was our first real tour though, and it got us all fucking stoked on the lifestyle.
