Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

    Living a domesticated existence
Starves people of meaning in their lives
Everyone feels the void beneath the surface
    Of everyday activities and routines

    Miserable, exploited, mass populations
Feeding the industrial systems endless hunger
    Treated like machines, living beings
Enslaved and kept passive in a technological noose

    We live in these cages
Made of concrete, glass, and steel
    A functioning human made hell
    Complete with natural scenery

    Yet there is no community
Deprived of connection with real people
    Technology perpetuates alienation
    But promises to connect us

And fill the void in our lives
In constant need of escape and distraction
    From this fucking ugly world
    Technology creeping into our lives

    Pop culture, pacifying shit
    Endless distractions to curb dissent
A society of lonely domesticated beings
Attempting social interaction behind a digital screen

Clinging to the feeling of connectedness
    Personalized profiles, mass communication tools
    Monitored and funded by pigs
    Spying on people, on movements
While corporations profit off government control
    Microsoft, apple, fedbook
    Endless lists of corporations
    Infiltrating our everyday lives
    The NSA, the CSE
Databases created from what you share
    Information for incrimination
Millions of people on terrorist watch lists
Technology’s a weapon used against us

Its function is to propel their ability
To efficiently exploit us and the natural world
While doing so capitalizing off selling us
Gadgets to distract us from the lives we live and hate

Turn off that shit, enter the real world
    You are not connected
You are alone staring into a fucking a screen

Get outside, meet with real people!
Even if we use these tools
    We must never forget

Technology is a system created by and for those in power
And it will only exist with
Division of labor, exploitation, and death

    Becoming connected through technology
    Is a sick fucking joke

1 RATBITE – Two Teeth – demo cassette

ratbite

Hailing from Seattle with members of SNUGGLE, LOST CAUSE and a few other bands is RATBITE. The first track comes in as raging thrashy poppy punk, though totally gritty at the same time. As the tape moves forward, their style switches up keeping the listeners on their toes. Just like listening to a COOTERS album, every song sounds a little different. Mostly male vocals with bits of raw angry female vocals, sometimes melodic sometimes raspy. Besides the COOTERS, they also have songs that remind me of FIFTEEN and Word as Law era NEUROSIS. While the drums and bass drive this psycho forward at a frantic pace, the guitar gets creative with melodies and noodly solos. The cover art throws me off a bit, though. But that’s just because I don’t have a solid grasp on all things artistic. It is a cut and paste style, which I like, but the theme goes over my head. The lyrics are in more of a personal style which allows for more emotion to come through while singing making it very exciting to listen to. Raw and angst ridden on a blue cassette for $4.99. This is another release that is limited to 100, so don’t wait too long. This is for folks who liked old school melodic dirty punk before it got shitty. (Jake)

0 WRETCHED OF THE EARTH – demo – Cassette

wretched of the earth

As I’m sitting in my semi dark basement blasting this fine recording, I feel the need to get my gripes(well, only one) out of the way. During the beautifully composed melodic intro, it sounds as if the two guitars are slightly out of tune with each other. Obviously not a huge deal, but worth mentioning. After that, I can’t think of a bad thing to say. The way the demo kicks off reminds me of a scene in 28 Days or 28 Weeks Later when things are looking extra bleek. The writing is captivating. It’s very busy, but not in a “mathy” way. All three stringed instruments twist in and out of each other while flirting with the same melodies and rhythms. It has elements of that style that TRAGEDY brought years ago, but with new life breathed into it. The power and detail of the drumming also bring this to a whole new level. I love hearing bands that push punk further and further instead of just playing the same things that they listen to. While this is happening, Chomsky and Zinn styled poetic hatred pour through the mics in the form of sincere anguished howling. Each set of lyrics has a bit of a back story printed along side them in a pocket size booklet that looks hand screened. Added bonus, a few stickers. Members from this band have been around for awhile in a number of different bands that we all know and love. This demo is limited to 100(looks like I have #100- yikes!), but have no fear, Yellow Dog from Berlin should be releasing this as a 300 press run LP. Totally worth hunting down. And, no, you can’t have mine. (Jake)

0 Sunchoke Soup

  • November 1, 2012
  • by backwoodsvegan
  • · Crusty Collectivist Cooking Project · Recipes Section

As the warm weather leaves us on the East Coast and the grey season settles in, less and less local fresh produce is available. Sunchokes and sage are the last things growing in our garden and it just so happens that they go really well with the last of the acorn squash we have laying around.

1 acorn squash, halved, baked and scooped out

10 leaves fresh sage, chopped

2 TBSP olive oil

1/2 red onion, chopped

3-4 cloves garlic, chopped

15 sunchokes (approx 2″ pieces), chopped

4 cups of water or vegetable broth

1/4 cup non dairy milk(hazelnut, almond, hemp, etc.)

salt and pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 400F. Cut acorn squash in half and place face down in a 2″ deep baking dish with 1/2″ or so of water, 1/2 tsp salt and chopped sage leaves. Bake for about 20 minutes or until soft. While this is baking, heat olive oil in a medium pot  on medium heat. Add onions and saute until translucent. Toss in garlic, saute for another minute and then add the sunchokes. Cook for another 5 or so minutes and add water/broth. Adjust to high heat, cover and bring to a boil, then lower to medium and simmer for 15 minutes. By this time the squash should be ready. Take the tray out of the oven, remove seeds and scoop out center with a spoon, being careful not to burn yourself. Put all of your ingredients in a food processor and blend until smooth. At this point you can add some non dairy milk to make it creamier. Pour back into pot, add salt and pepper to taste and serve.

0 ULRIKE’S DREAM – Van 9 TOT 5 – LP

  • October 28, 2012
  • by backwoodsvegan
  • · Reviews

It would seem that everything that comes through my mailbox that has the Maloka Distro logo printed somewhere on it is really good. Now I can add ULRIKE’S DREAM to that list. The needle drops on the first track and I wait. It starts off calm, beautiful and melodic. After a few lines the distortion is fully kicked on, the double bass starts pounding, the bass lines rip and all hell breaks loose in a whirlwind hardcore attack! The lead(female) vocals have turned angry and sour setting a killer pace. Then they add some yin to the yang and  start the second track off with a little reggae style that feels like it has a NAUSEA flavor to it, but it quickly jumps back into fast hardcore drive. Track 3, You Walk in Line is more vicious that expected. The writing is varied on this, which keeps it from getting stale. At times there’s full on “tough guy” chugging riffs, smoothed out ska, straight up speed metal (No Dead Desire) and some acoustic for even more variety. All the songs are socio-political in nature touching on squatting, getting trapped in the “system” and scenesters. The package is rounded out with great sound quality, spot on mixing and a clean layout with black and white band pictures spread out through the lyric sheet. Like I said, Maloka never disappoints. 0 Curried Butternut Squash Soup

  • October 25, 2012
  • by backwoodsvegan
  • · Crusty Collectivist Cooking Project · Recipes Section

Fall in New York is one of my all time favorite things and soups like this one submitted by the very creative Janine are part of the reason.  Enjoy.

1 medium/large butternut squash
3 small A.P.P.L.E.S (tart ones would work best)
2 shallots
2 cups brussel sprouts
1 tablespoon curry powder
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp ground fenugreek seeds
10 curry leaves (optional), and a few for garnish
olive oil
sea salt to taste

This one is pretty easy… wash and slice the shallots, and brussel sprouts, toss in olive oil, spices and sea salt, roast at 375 in the oven until crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. While this is happening, cut, core, de-seed, de-skin, and defile the apples and squash (you may leave them in relatively big pieces, they go soft easily). Boil until easily pierced with a fork, then transfer, liquid and all, into a blender (do not do this drunk). Return to pot, add your roasted sprouts/shallots, stir and serve. You may want to add more sea salt, depending on your taste. Serve to a grindcore singer.

0 20 MINUTES DE CHAOS We Don’t Need Your Police LP

  • · Reviews

Well shit howdy! After getting half way through writing this review, my laptop died. Well, not so much mine, but one my boss lets me use at home. Not important. Anyway, everything I wrote immediately disappeared in half a second. So…the first thing you’ll notice is the CRASS influenced military font on the border framing a creepy as fuck clown holding an old timey round bomb and then a bunch of things that add texture, but don’t make sense to me. When you pull out te sleeve, the lyrics(some French, some English) are on one side and there’s pictures of show flyers and photos of the band in the studio. Ya know, even the center of te record is a bit CRASSY. Anyway, 20 MINUTES kills it! Every track is just unapologetic brutal crust that’s mostly woman fronted accompanied by raspy male vocals. I immediately thought of NAUSEA, NUCLEAR DEATH TERROR and FLEAS AND LICE. All the lyrics are fiercely political and aren’t just rehashed war formula staples. They tackle the integrity of the crust scene and comment on the recent global upheavals and question work life that starts every unsatisfying day with the blip of an alarm clock. The mix and recording are perfect. I love when well written songs are preserved properly. Ever buy something from a good band that you just can’t listen to? Not this one! Top notch from start to finish! Another staller release from Maloka. (Jake)

0 Seitan (wheat meat)

  • October 18, 2012
  • by backwoodsvegan
  • · Crusty Collectivist Cooking Project · Recipes Section

Hey folks! This week’s recipe is for a very basic seitan. It’s a good starting point for many different flavors and styles and can be used in a variety of ways. Plus, the liquid left over can be used as a soup broth!

2 medium onions, chopped

5 cloves of garlic, chopped

3 large carrots, chopped into 1/2 pieces

In a large pot, boil 5 quarts of water, add onions, garlic and carrots(feel free to add additional flavors like celery, parsley, etc.) and continue to boil. While this is cooking, prepare seitan.

2 Cups vital wheat gluten

2 TBSP ground cumin

2 tsp ground black pepper

2 tsp sea salt

2 tsp onion powder

2 tsp garlic powder

1 Cup water or broth

1/2 soy sauce

Mix dry ingredients together and wet ingredients in a separate bowl. Slowly add wet to dry while mixing with a large spoon. When dough is too tough to mix, squeeze together with hands. Once it becomes a solid mass, kneed for five minutes and roll into a log and slice into medallions. Immediately submerge in boiling broth for 45 minutes. Place a colander in a large bowl and drain liquid. This can later be used as a soup or gravy base. Though you’ll have to separate te seitan from the boiled carrots, onions and garlic, it’s worth it. The veggies can also be used further in soup or pot pies or whatever. Once the seitan cools it can be stored in freezer bags and frozen for a fairly long time. Remember to add different herbs and spices to suit the dish you are using it for. Since it’s close to Halloween, we’ll call this mock zombie. Cheers! And remember, if you have to eat zombie, avoid eating the brain!!!

1 Pad Thai

This week’s recipe comes from Joe Fisher at http://dachaproject.com/ in Western New York. He’s a baker, a lover of sustainability and all things doom metal. Oh, and an all around good guy. We don’t have a picture this week so you’ll just have to make this dish to have a look at it. Enjoy!

Easy Vegan Pad Thai (aka, you can make this from a average grocery store!)

This is a two serving receipe that starts with:

6 oz. rice noodles, (the thick wide ones)

Sauce
3 T. fresh lime juice
3 T. catsup
1 T. brown sugar
1/4 T. soy sauce

—-
3/4 lb. mung bean sprouts

3 T. peanut or vegetable oil
3-4 garlic cloves, minced and pressed
1 T. minced fresh chile or 1 1/2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
2 cups thinly sliced carrots
1 block tofu cubed and lightly browned,
2/3 cup chopped peanuts
6-8 scallions, chopped, about 1 cup
Small peice of ginger minced very fine
Small handful of Cilanro or fresh Lemongrass

After bringing water to boil in a covered pot, blanch the mung bean
spouts by dipping in the boiling water for 30 seconds. Set aside to
drain.

When the water returns to a boil, stir in the rice noodles and cook
for 3-5 minutes until tender but firm. Drain, then rinse in cool water
and set aside to drain again.

In a small bowl mix the sauce ingredients.

Prepare the other ingredients. Then heat oil for stir fry in a wok or
large skillet, add the garlic and chile and swirl in the oil for a
moment before adding the carrots and stir frying them for a
minute. Push the carrots to the side and add the tofu tofu. Then pour
in the sauce and stir everything together. Add the
drained noodles and mung sprouts and toss, then stir in peanuts and
scallions. Flip a couple more times under high-heat and you are done!

0 BLEEDING TONGUES This is Where Silence Comes From CD – REVIEW

  • October 5, 2012
  • by backwoodsvegan
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

The concept of this CD is just beautiful. Each song was written to celebrate the lives of people that were very close to writer(ex vocalist for RAW NERVES). He explains in the notes that admitting to one’s self that the passing of loved ones is permanent is very difficult, especially to those who don’t believe in an afterlife and that he felt he owed it to them to create these pieces to honor them. There are seven tracks in all and are instrumentals with the exception of some movie sound bites and low spoken bits. The first track was interesting in that it start with the spoken part recorded backwards and the music over it, then about three minutes in, the music stops and then it switches. The  words are normal and the music is backwards. I had a hard time hearing what they were saying, buy it might just be too many years of going to shows while not wearing ear plugs. Most of these songs are clean solo guitar with heavy use of reverb and flange with some drumming. Without knowing the theme of the album, it feels like the sound track for driving alone at night down long dark roads. It’s atmospheric with big rich tone. At times it sounded heavily influenced by newer NEUROSIS and THE VENTURES. The writing is creative and artful, great for relaxing and slipping into deep thought. $5 from Poisoned Candy Records. This soup is one of the things that makes me love Autumn so much.

1 Butternut squash, cut in half

1 Acorn squash, cut in half

2 TBSP olive oil

2 small onions, diced

4 cloves garlic, chopped

4 small sweet potatoes, cubed

3 medium red apples

8 cups vegetable broth or water

2 tsp ground ginger

1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

1/2 tsp ground clove

1/8 cup fresh sage, chopped

salt and pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 375F. Place all squash halves face down in deep baking pan with just under an inch of water and bake until tender(about 30-40 minutes). Saute onion in olive oil on medium heat for 3 minutes, add garlic and saute for another minute. Pour in broth/water and sweet potatoes, apples, spices and sage. Turn flame up to high and boil until sweet potatoes are tender. When squash is done, use a spoon to scrape out flesh and add to sweet potatoes. Transfer soup to a food processor in small batches and puree. Pour mixture back into a pot and adjust seasoning. This goes really well with corn bread.
