Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

0 Occupy Oakland Re-Occupies in Mosswood Park March 22, 2012

From occupyoakland.org

While hundreds of OPD officers were deployed to intimidate OWS protesters last night in Union Square, Occupy Oaklanders organized a non-publicized occupation of an undisclosed location in solidarity with occupations around the country and to give occupy Oakland a new organizational home base.

In the cover of night, a dedicated group of Occupy Oakland protesters were able to set up a new camp without any harassment from the over bearing local police force by keeping the location a secret, until this morning at about 7:15am. An estimated 30 people held the space through out the night, while having a bit of fun trolling OPD on twitter with both clever &  mis-leading tips as to where the new camp was being erected.

Racism is defined as hatred and intolerance of another race.  Seems pretty simple to identify and understand when it’s the confederate flag waving, swastika tattoo wearing nut-job spewing hate.  I think we would all agree that that person is a racist.  Fill in the blank…”I hate all ______ people”.

What is classism?  Is it as simple as a discriminatory attitude or hatred based on a social class?  How many of us are guilty of that to some degree?… “Eat the Rich”, “Burn the Rich”.  The evil, rich, white man keeping his boot on the throats of the rest of us, we hate him.  I hate rich people.

What is bigotry?  That word isn’t as popular but certainly has it’s applications…

“I hate Christians”.  That gets tossed around a lot.  Do you really?  You hate your Grandma?  Maybe you do, I dunno…My Grandma was way cool, but hopefully you starting to get my point.

Hate is a strong word, “to feel hostility toward”.  When applied with broad strokes that can get the hater into quite a pickle.  Hate is a very dualistic concept, it illustrates a right and a wrong, deals in generalities or stereotypes on one hand while defining a clear line on the other that eliminates anything on the other side of that line leaving no room for conversation or debate.

0 NEXT VICTIM This Moment of Silence Before the Storm CD review

  • March 20, 2012

Imagine a really dark, downtempo MARTYRDÖD with both female and what appears to be male vocals and a tribalish rhythm section that sounds like they were lifted straight from Only Theatre of Pain era CHRISTIAN DEATH. Killer. In addition, there are moments of atmospheric goth (think LYCIA) and dramatic goth-metal; nothing wrong with that. It would be difficult to overstate how dark this album is. Arrangements don’t follow anything that might be considered “song-oriented” but that really works on an album like this. The band have gifted us with a liner notes in both their native Polish as well as English translations (although at least one track is sung primarily in English). Themes seem to deal with more existential matters like the personal turmoil of surviving as an individual in a society that demands conformity to the point of banality. For fans of FALL OF EFRAFA, ICTUS, NACHTMYSTIUM, RHEA’S OBSESSION, or even the 1990s releases of Projekt Records.(Matt Indignant)

0 GOVERNMENT ISSUE s/t 12” reissue Review

Classic band with a very definitive sound. This is a reissue of their self-titled album from 1986 and it’s first time in print in 20 years! When I first heard G.I. I heard the song “Teenager in a box” and fell for this band that very moment (hear this song if you haven’t). This release captures the band at a point where they have evolved into something potent and strong. They say during this recording that they approached it as a “concept album” and can see to some degree of where they were going (they eventually dropped that idea). In my opinion this was a coming of age album and really defines them as a band. GOVERNMENT ISSUE always had a specific sound that you could pick out from a crowd with good amount of catchiness and hooks in the music to bring you back for more. GI were a hardcore punk band, but without all the mayhem and noise that generally accompanies the genre. This was re-mastered by the guitarist Tom Lyle and sounds damn good! Also included are 4 bonus tracks on this slap of wax. Cheers to Doctor Strange records for re-releasing this great album. (Leffer)

0 OPPOSITION RISING aftermathematics CD review

  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

Hmmm, how to describe this? The first half is fast, yet heavy metallic, studs-n-spikes hardcore. Now, where the fuck did I put my skateboard? The second half leans towards ska-core, not at all unlike MOUTH SEWN SHUT but not so crusty. Am I making any sense? The songs cover themes near to all our hearts like predatory banks (Debt Sentence), class war (The Rich are Killing the Poor), and punk scene drama (Brick by Brick). The band itself is apparently made up of veteran Boston punkers who’ve each brought their own tastes and stirred them together in this witches’ cauldron of a record. While aftermathematics is freely available for download on the band’s social networks, you can support the scene by purchasing the vinyl release from these DIY record labels that have collaborated on the release: Active Rebellion, Crash Assailant, Crawlspace, Pirates Press Recs, Riot Ska Recs, Rodent Popsicle, and Tankcrimes. Check out their website for more info. Good shit for real. (Matt Indignant)

0 ALTERNATIVE Demos 1982 12” review

  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

ANTISOCIETY records has been putting out some very good and vital material lately. First the release of the hard-to-come by ANTISECT e.p and now this!  ALTERNATIVE hail from Scotland and don’t really need an introduction. For those of you out there not familiar, these folks are legends in the early U.K. Anarcho-punk community and have become a staple within the punk scene today. Touring with acts like CRASS, FLUX OF PINK INDIANS, THE SYSTEM, ANDY T, this gives you the gist of where we’re going musically, lyrically and ideologically. This particular record is their demo recordings from 1982 and have that classic dirge and rawness to it.  Given this was taken from some aged tapes or reels, this has some classic sounds that can only be defined as pure and genuine. Some say these guys were the Scotlands answer to CRASS and hearing their music re-enforces that to some degree. Very strong socio/political lyrics with some classic guitar hooks and driving drums to fuel your punk angst. Get this record and put it into your library of anarcho-collections. It’s a must have. The “Dudes” of Helltown

(Part II of III)

Bitty“Dude” parties were a lot like an episode of  “Cops” before the cops show up, and were always entertaining in this kind of scary way. I went to a Dude party on a summer night in 1989 at a punk house called Hate Manor II. (Hate Manor I had been shut down by a police raid a couple months earlier). By this time I was already straight edge, but actually found parties and what others did while wasted pretty entertaining. I arrived to the party very fashionably late, and about an hour later the police arrived. They knocked on the door and my friend Pete, who didn’t live there, answered. The police asked to come in, and Pete said:

“Fuck you pig!  If you ain’t got a warrant, you ain’t coming in!” and then slammed the door in their faces and locked it.

Usually when cops show up at a party people will either try to settle down or they’ll run and hide. You knew you were at a Dude party when the opposite was actually occurring and the partiers were antagonizing the cops instead. The cops had surrounded the house and got taunted for about the next hour. I remember people putting pillows over their faces and flipping off the cops. There was also a lot of “Haha! Fuck you pig you can’t come in!” whenever the cops shined their lights in the windows. This, in itself, got the cops so mad that they were foaming at the mouth to bust up the party. They eventually gained contact with the landlord who gave them permission to go in. A girl finally yelled at everyone that the cops are going to come in anyway and that she’s going to let them in. Right as she was unlocking the door the cops had simultaneously knocked down the door, which sent her crashing to the floor with the door on top of her as the cops poured in. One by one they arrested and filled the cop van with Dudes and other partiers. The cops in Manitowoc had often confused me with another Dude that actually committed a lot of crimes, so they would have to let me go when they would realize I wasn’t him. So when the lieutenant saw me at this party he seemed excited to finally have a reason to arrest me. He assumed that if I hung out with the Dudes I must be a troublemaker like they were.  (Back then I was a young skater punk, not a Dude, but I still would hang out at their parties) The Lt. officer kept looking at me, stating “I finally got you!”.

The Anti Christy

The Anti ChristyPart Two: Clear in my mind are the unforgiving odors of spilled beer, dirty basement floor and sweaty bodies…The humidity was so thick you had to push through it like a heavy bedspread hanging on a clothes line; this was our gig at The Haunted Kitchen. During our set I remember sweating so profusely that it was hard to keep that little orange pick (or “plectrum” as Saxon called them) between my fingertips. June 28, 2005 in Lawrence, KS. HAPPY BASTARDS were encroaching upon the big C.L.I.T. FEST gathering in Minneapolis.

Jeff and Jamie hosted the punk show at their house, The Haunted Kitchen, that night and they were rad as hell. Jeff could shakedown show money from people like I’d never witnessed. He was a seasoned pro, for sure. Happy Bastards were just a small part in an amazing line-up of bands: SLIGHTLY LESS THAN NOTHING (on tour from Seattle), I OBJECTt! (on tour from New York state), ALERT ALERT! (from Kansas, I believe), and LATTERMAN (also from New York, I believe). As we were playing, I looked out into the hazy, dark basement. Sweat rolled between my eyes and dripped off the tip of my nose. Sean and Saxon started playing that unforgettable rhythm. Four counts in, Shade chimed in the those contagious bends, “Merrr-nerrrr, berrrr-nerrr, derrrr-derrr, naerrr-naerr…” The crowd knew instantly what we we’re playing. CCmuthaf*ckinR baby; it was on! Fortunate Son = basement berserker wildness. What an awesome night!!
