Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

New video from the Stimulator

This is the second video subMedia.tv has produced about the struggle to stop a natural gas transport project called the Pacific Trails Pipeline or PTP. TheUnis’tot’en, a clan of the Wet’suet’en Nation have built a protection camp to bock PTP, in so called British Columbia in Canada. This is the third time the Unis’tot’en have called for a convergence in their territories.
This year’s camp attracted over 150 people who came from as far east as Montreal and as far south as Florida. The camp organizers opted not to tap large environmental ngo’s for material support, and instead reached out to grassroots, community based allies.

Despite the lack of concrete evidence and international outrage over the miscarriage of justice, the state of Massachusetts railroaded them into the electric chair.

Finally a new release from these hardcore hooligans from New Jersey.  It’s been a couple of  years since there last recording and PHAROAH has not lost there place as one of the up and coming hardcore/doom acts.  For this new release  you get 2 brand new songs.  “This House is Doomed” and “Waste”.  This is there heaviest stuff to date “This House is Doomed” clocks in at almost 7 minutes long and is epic, it will keep you listening the whole entire time so heavy you wont want to get up.  “Waste” is the shorter of the two songs I wouldn’t say it’s as heavy as the last track but still is heavy enough you’ll still enjoy it. 0 NEUROSIS: Title Of Eleventh Full-Length From Musical Pioneers Revealed

  • August 15, 2012

  • · News · PE Web Zine

It is said that great art has the power to take us outside of ourselves and bring us closer to ourselves simultaneously. Few bands have accomplished this rare feat on a more profound and consistent basis than NEUROSIS. For nearly three decades, their music has touched the hearts and minds of men and women seeking contact with something beyond the physical world, something intangible, something that expresses the inner tumult of the human condition in a way that transcends time and space. Something that not only provokes questions but maybe even hints at answers.

Since 1985 this matchless force has surpassed the boundaries of any genre, never ceasing to mutate and progress their songwriting and sonic delivery, and never failing to mesmerize audiences both in the studio and onstage. And as the anticipation from their diehard fanbase reaches a boiling point, this week NEUROSIS unveil the title of their eleventh full-length studio creation, which will manifest itself as Honor Found In Decay.

I think it was George Carlin that said something once about how the secret to great comedy lies in exaggeration, or specifically the ability to take one particular thing and embellish the almighty hell out of it until even a retelling of something as mundane as ripping ass in an elevator has the potential to destroy a live audience. I agree to an extent, especially as someone who’s long been a fan of movies and other entertainment that tend to push the viewer to the limit (Blazing Saddles would be a good example of this). I think there’s a lot to be said for the ability to tell a good story; as well as to be able to hook your audience and be able to hold their attention until you’re done.

For some of us, though, the tendency to exaggerate or embellish a story doesn’t really exist because the story itself is fucked up enough as it is. If there’s one thing my almost 40 years on this planet have taught me, it’s that I am a magnet for insane people and situations. No matter where I go or what I’m doing, the whackjobs and freak-a-leeks always find me. I am serious on this one. I can go to something as tame as an art opening and I can guaran-fucking-tee that the most questionable people that are lurking around will immediately draw a bead on me and creep to their hearts’ content until I am able to find the nearest exit and bamboozle my way out of there. Of course, this holds double true for shows and fests of any sort. It doesn’t matter how many people are there; if there is some random coked out metal dude wanting to start a band or drunk girl putting the moves on me in front of her massive, Cro-Magnon boyfriend, you can bet your sweet ass that they will get me in their crosshairs. This may sound stupid, but a lot of times I get stuck with people who, intoxicated or not, think I’m cooler than I really am. I will admit to looking kind of like someone who would be in a band or something potentially raging like that, but I would honestly rather spend my off hours reading books or having a mellow dinner with a friend than slamming fifths of whiskey or doing lines off…well, you get the idea. When I’m recounting a story of some crazy shit that’s happened me, I tell it just the way the whole thing went down. I don’t exaggerate because I don’t have to.

That said, I would like to transport you at this time to yet another insane night at my job. As I have said in the past, there are chill nights and there are wild nights at my work. Then, though, there are the ones where I come in through the back door and say to myself, “What in the fucking Wide World of Sports is going on in here?” Apparently on this night there had been a “Jug Band Battle” at the Cabooze, and all I could think was “That fucking figures, dude…I always have to schedule myself on nights where there’s some dumbass show that empties out a bunch of drunk hipsters into the cafe.” It would certainly explain all the goofy “steampunk” attire going on and the fact that everybody and their grandma had a banjo and the whole night would have been a jangly-arsed jam session if I hadn’t been continually shutting people down so I could listen to BOOK OF BLACK EARTH. Take all that and add in a couple more drunken creepers, plus a couple of loud broham-type dudes and you can guess what state of mind I was in…the kind where you’re deathly quiet but secretly on the verge of violence. If it hadn’t been for the flask of bourbon that I had stashed on the cook’s shelf, I do believe hell would have been unleashed that night.

Anyhow, it was about 3 am when I heard the front door slam shut and I noticed them. Two girls, probably mid to late-20s in age, one brunette and one with kind of blondish hair…both weaving their way to the counter like a couple of drunken sailors. They were walking as if they were maneuvering their way around a bunch of road cones and somehow their eyes were locked on this poor bastard right here, who was just doing his best to maintain some semblance of order and keep his place of employment from getting completely ripped to shit. I noticed that they both were sporting tons of tattoos, wearing skintight dresses, and looked extremely out of place in this cafe full of people fucked up on booze and who knows what else. I kept waiting for the inevitable UFC fighter-types or tattoo artists that girls like them are always with but nobody followed them in. Instead, here I was with these two wild-looking tattooed women and I was doing the typical dude thing where you try to look badass like you don’t give a fuck about anything but you’re secretly shitting Twinkies sideways and trying to figure out what to do. Being that I was single at the time, I had a crazy notion to try and spit game on the brunette…that is, until she and her friend got to the counter and I couldn’t help but notice that she smelled like she’d just puked up a whole bottle of Skyy vodka.

“Oh….my…..God,” she said to her equally besotted but not quite as vomit-smelling friend. “I want this one.”
I looked around thinking there may have been one of my co-workers standing behind me as some sort of backup. No such luck. I was stuck there and her friend wasn’t making things any easier by saying, “Oh girl, I will tear this boy apart. We have to get him back to the hotel room.”

As I said a couple paragraphs ago, it doesn’t take much to look at me and piece together that I am a musician or artist of some sort. Even though I’m older than a lot of people that I meet from playing in bands, going to shows, etc., I would like to think that the years have been good to me. I still have my dreads, all my original teeth, and have managed to stay in shape somewhat. While I don’t think I lack confidence, I don’t think there is anything that remarkable or great about me. So you can guess that it’s tough when I get put on the spot like this and I am trying for the life of me to know when to walk away and know when to run (as another older and wiser man once put it). I wonder sometimes what would happen if I ever got famous or reached any sort of notoriety for anything-besides writing for Profane Existence, of course. I think I would have a blast for a couple of days and then retreat into Michael Jacksonesque wingnut territory, never wanting to show my face in public and being content to marinate in my oxygen tent at home. I’m not as introverted as I used to be, but I just don’t think I could handle people thinking that I’m the shit when all I’m really interested in is just doing my thing and trying to be happy in life.

0 PIPSQUEAK – Fowl Hymns review

  • August 3, 2012

  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

Behold! The tales of acoustic woe, that fall from the hands of sweet guitar and somber cello. PIPSQUEAK is a love story, a tale that has grown for many years. Born from the cracks of the Silicon Valley, grown to the peaks of the Pacific Northwest, this band has revised itself a few times over before nestling into it’s current status. Started in ’97 as a guitar and drum two piece in California when guitarist Jerome was also in APEFACE, he went solo when he moved to Seattle in ’99- banging away on a beat up guitar, wailing his tunes, and crafting a unique sound that has come to be recognizable and admired by folks here and afar. In the early 2000’s, Jerome and some friends started Seattle-based pop punk band SNUGGLE, and a few of the PIPSQEAK songs became part of SNUGGLE’s repertoire. As the music continued to transform over the years, Jerome had some friends nice enough to give him a new guitar, which he named Elizabeth. He has held onto her ever since…
Like I said, this is a love story. A tale that has grown for many years. Many songs have been strummed, many sad, sordid stories have been sung. ‘Twas this way, for years, with Jerome and Elizabeth. Elizabeth and Jerome. A solo endeavor. Just a man, his thoughts poured into music, and his guitar.
That was, of course, until they met Lisa.
Lisa came into the PIPSQUEAK picture in 2007, having already etched out quite the rockin’ resume as cello player for such bands as GARMONBOZIA, OROKU, and presently KOHOSH. This pairing must have been in the stars. Jerome’s punchy, emotional, driving guitar riffs and personal lyrics met their match with Lisa’s perfect-pitch cello playing, adding new depth and dimension to the former solo project.
The music of Pipsqueak can best described as folky and catchy on the one hand, while also being totally melancholy. The upbeat tempo and consistent strumming on guitar with somber sweeping cello melodies and harmonies allow for this dichotomy. The cello is heartbreakingly pretty played alongside these intense guitar riffs. There are long musical parts to these songs, where the two instruments do their own singing and it is really powerful. And while the fast strumming definitely has it’s roots in punk rock, this acoustic duo is so much more than just one genre. Harkening to punk rock’s angry roots, PIPSQUEAK is also more; folk, classical cello elements, country twang, and even hints of Spanish style guitar present.
Lyrically, these songs are personal, sad, and intimate. I almost feel as if I’m doing something wrong by listening, like these stories have been ripped from journal entries- shared stolen secrets turned into songs. Sung by both Jerome and Lisa, these male and female harmonizing vocals add more layers to songs that previously had only one vocalist, and new possibilities and growth in the newly written songs. At times the vocals trade off between just Jerome, alternating, and harmonizing duals with Lisa as well. Just as their instruments merge into one conglomerate sound- their vocals merge to create awesome sounds as well. Gruff vocals meld with pretty singing. While sad, they have elements of hope. I hope.
Artwork for the LP was done by local Pacific Northwest artists. LP comes with a full size insert/lyric sheet. The first official release of PIPSQUEAK’s current reportiore, Fowl Hymns contains 5 new songs and 5 old ones that have been rewritten to add cello parts.
Do yourself a favor and get this album, ASAP. The songs will stuck in your head and have you singing along in no time. (Maygun)
