Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

4 How to Kick Anaemia’s Ass, Vegan Style!

  • June 30, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · Features · PE Web Zine

Anaemia, otherwise known as iron deficiency, is a common blood disorder affecting millions of people worldwide, most of whom are female-bodied. Living with chronic stress and fatigue is unfortunately very normalized in our society, and many people ignore the symptoms of anaemia until they become severe.

Signs that you may be anaemic include tiredness, difficulty concentrating, dizziness, shortness of breath, low tolerance for exercise, heart palpitations, and skin that bruises easily. Many people with anaemia don’t even know they have it, so heading to the clinic for a blood test is usually a good idea. If you don’t eat animal products, many conventional doctors will be quick to blame your diet if you have low iron. However, anaemia is a common problem for women who do eat meat as well, and there are plenty of ways to prevent and cure this illness without supporting animal industries.

Recent record scores have been abundant for sure, especially during my trip to Chaos In Tejas which always has plenty of vinyl; both new and old, being thrown about. Now it has to be said that I love looking thru distros and vinyl dealer stalls even more than the average joe, because I have been a junkie for records for as long as I can recall.

However, in years past the frenzy in Austin has kinda actually bummed me out, with people clamoring over one another just to peruse through some box at a distro table. And there is plenty to get crazy about. There really are some great distros in attendance every year. This year the afore mentioned clamoring only happened to me twice, which was an amazing improvement.

1 Working Class Vegan Zine seeks submissions. Comrade Black

  • June 26, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · Columns · Features · PE Web Zine · Radness

We are seeking submissions for a zine on being both working class and vegan, to decenter veganism away from the politics of privilege and consumerism.

For many of us, buying whatever we want, flying around to animal rights conferences, or going this or that vegan band’s reunion in another country or state is simply not an option. For many of us who struggle with poverty as a lived experience the middle class liberal politics of voting with your dollars and buying overpriced fancy over-packaged goods is alienating and unrealistic. For many of us the food bank is our grocery store and dumpster diving after a house show isn’t something you do to be cool, it is something you do simply cause you can’t afford to buy good food. Our hope is it will help to be a resource of lived experiences for those who can’t relate to the mainstream vegan middle class clique, and that it would be full of useful strategies for coping with poverty while maintaining a vegan way of living.

The term ‘working class’ is ambiguous and many people use it to mean different things. For the context of this zine the term working class will refer to people who work dead end jobs at near minimum wage, or live on welfare or disability, or who struggle to pay rent each month, or are living on the streets or in homeless shelters. We are not referring to people who work high paid union jobs or work as roughnecks in the oil patch or logging industries. The point is to share the experiences of those who have struggled economically just to meet their basic needs yet feel maintaining a plant based diet is important to them.

Submissions should be between 1/2 a page to 5 pages in length (single spaced). We are open to many formats, from personal stories, to personal essays, to critiques, poetry, recipes, cartoons, jokes, or rants and tips. You can write about your struggles with food, or with mainstream liberal vegans, working with animals, why a plant based diet is important to you, nutrition, activism, wild harvesting, dumpster diving, or about how you have navigated the various barriers to eating healthy on a low budget and useful skills or information you have learned along the way.

Deadline for submission September 30
send submissions to: workingclassvegan@hotmail.com

I really like this CD. It threw me for a loop the first time I listened. It’s like 90’s crust on the bass, with SoCal singing and skaterock guitar. I think it’s awesome!!! The bass is really heavy and they even cover Slave To Convention by DOOM. This 3 piece from Holland even samples David Icke and Alex Jones. Lyrically it’s about religion, government, animal cruelty and the like. They have been around since 96’ with different line-ups. I bet they are a blast to see live. You should definitely get this. 0 TOM 77 Prisel Cas – Review

  • June 21, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

This is the first solo project from Tom 77 who formerly sang for the Czech band NO SYMPATHY. I tossed it on while I was building shelves in the basement and after about the fifth track I realized that I had gotten totally lost in it and played it over and over again. Even though it’s not sung in English, each song seemed completely familiar like I’d been listening to them for years. Most of them are mid to fast paced with a few slower tracks thrown in to mix things up. While the writing has some similarities, each song has a different style ranging from country-influenced punk to bluesy rock, but all in a poppy folk punk acoustic style. It’s not too often that I really like folk punk (sorry, I realize that seems a little closed minded, but some of it is just boring), but the writing is fresh and interesting with lots of heart and talent. Though all the lyrics are printed in the sleeve, they aren’t in English so I can’t tell you the subject matter. Not sure if it’s related, but the cover art is rough sketch painting of a man standing in front of a ratty post industrial landscape. (Jake)

0 BLACK BREATH “Sentenced to Life” CD

  • June 21, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

Here we have hometown heroes BLACK BREATH with their 3rd Lp. The darlings of Seattle. Amazing d-beat/metal crossover. Really nice guys. Where to begin??!! This has been a tough one to review. Listened to this a few times, went and saw them with NASUM, listened a few more times, then played for the roommates. Conclusion…..they have progressed into WAY more of a metal band. The black metal guitars and drum triggers have prevailed. This is by no means a bad album but, a departure from the first two in the sense that the black metal is in high dosage. The songs have so much going on in them that it’s confusing to figure out what they are going for. Like they are cramming so much stuff in each song because they can and not because it should be there. It is a tight album. Everything is perfectly timed and has a great production sound. I guess this was bound to happen. Most of you will probably love this. I do like it but, I wish they had kept with some more of their d-beat/metal aspects of the previous two albums than the scandi-black metal sound they are trying for on this effort. My criticisms aside it really is a tight album. It just wont get as much play as the other two. (Matt)

0 DES ACATO “Futuro Incierto” Demo CD

  • June 21, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

This has a little bit of everything going on!!!! You have the female singer (great by the way), triple vocals, thrash, punk, Mexican grind, crust, and just straight metal. At times it’s too much. For the most part it works though. They have a little EKKAI going on and the singer sometimes reminds me of CRIATURA. Then you get the BRUJERIA style vocals come in and the grind/metal aspect and it seems to take away from the other stuff. I have listened to it a few times. It grows on you after a bit. Not bad for a demo. I’m sure they will come into their own, if they haven’t already. This was done in 07’. I think the members are from Colombia and Spain. (Matt)

1 GENERATION DECLINE tour special CD – Review

  • June 21, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

This appears to be a sort of unofficial release in order to have something on hand during a tour. Not sure if the songs are new or if this is like a “best of” sort of deal to try to best showcase the bands sound, but there seems to be an older version of this from 2011 released as an EP. Either way, this disc is really good! As each song played, I was brought back to the mid ‘90s when political crust was totally raging. Bands like DISTRAUGHT, ANTI-PRODUCT, MANKIND? and even some earlier bands like FILTH and SPITBOY came to mind. While they could have gotten away with singing about getting wasted and mindlessly fucking shit up, the lyrics go the route of serious politics, going after horrible social issues like people who stay in abusive relationships and defend their abusers and punk rock scenester bullshit. Also gotta love a band that writes about things that make you learn. Their song September Dawn is about the Mountain Meadows Massacre that was carried out by Mormons who attacked a wagon train of immigrants from Arkansas who were on their way to California in 1857. Maybe this story was common knowledge, but I found it to be pretty interesting. While I dig the fold out poster style lyric sheet smattered with band photos and flyers, having all of this in a sleeve of some sort would have made storage a bit easier. All in all, this band kills it. (Jake)
