Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

1 GUIDE “Bastard” 7”

Here we have GUIDE from Tennessee with a 6 song 7” called Bastard. They have a thrashy, grindy, HIS HERO IS GONE sorta sound going on. The songs on side A seem to all meld into one and are along the trashier, grindy style. Side B is has the more chugga, low end HIS HERO IS GONE style. This was pretty good. I was expecting total distortion blown out stuff here. The packaging is pretty cool with a fold open sleeve and a pocket insert. Haven’t seen that before. Comes with an insert with band/label info. No lyrics. This is worth a listen. (Matt)

0 TREASURE CITY THRIFT

  • June 19, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · Features · PE Web Zine

I first heard about Treasure City Thrift from my homey Chris, who lives in Austin, TX. He told me about this anarcho-thrift store and by gum my interest was piqued! Wanna know more? I sure as shit did, so I (stinkbot) sent an email that had some questions attached. Cory, a coordinator at Treasure City was kind enough to wrangle two founding members of the collective and answer these questions. Read on brave and interested punk rocker!

What is Treasure City Thrift?

Simon: Friend, neighbor, thrift store, bazaar of the weird, junk/curio shop, reuse and waste stream diversion project, event and meeting space, infoshop, collectively-run business, non-profit, co-op incubator, really really free market sponsor, 25c sales, radical economic engine, mutual aid, solidarity not charity.

Cory: A collectively run radical non-profit thrift store in Austin TX.

Our mission: Treasure City Thrift supports local groups working for grassroots change using a sustainable and democratic economic model.

What does that mean exactly? We’re trying to build solid support systems for the organizations in our community that are working towards systematic, root level change. These groups need funding, space materials, We provide one time grants, ongoing financial support, materials, meeting and event space, free copies, and promotion to groups which have little or no funding, and are aligned with our principles.

How did the idea of starting a thrift store come about, as opposed to an info shop or a cafe?

Simon: We had a dozen co-founders – many of whom are still active in some capacity – so of course there are varying reasons why a thrift store was appealing.

At the core, I think we all wanted to create something that could financially sustain itself and other radical projects, and was simple and inexpensive to start. Of course, it never happened exactly as we envisioned it (except the inexpensive part!), but we kept at it and now we are closer to the original goal.

On a personal level, I like the idea of re-selling goods that already exist at very affordable prices (or free). This makes TCT relevant to a range of people beyond just radicals. Also, I’ve always loved and shopped at thrift stores – as do most of my friends – so creating an anarchist thrift store made a lot of sense economically. Why pay money to organizations or business you disagree with if you can start your own alternative?

James: Treasure City’s goal from the beginning was to be an economic engine for the Austin radical community. Many of us had been involved in projects where we spent more time fundraising than we spent actually doing the work that the project was intended to do. We wanted to start a project that would fund other projects, provide jobs with dignity, and otherwise be part of a larger infrastructure of resistance and liberation.
A thrift store had both political and pragmatic advantages over other types of businesses. Politically, it was a project that would relevant to a wide range of communities. By selling necessary things like clothing and household goods at affordable prices, it could meet the needs of radicals and non-radicals alike, much more than an infoshop. A lot of radical spaces seem to only serve a narrow demographic, and we envisioned a project that would transcend that limit.
Also, a thrift store appealed to our interest in anti-consumerism. It walks a tight line, because in one sense, it is entirely consumerist; a lot of the stuff treasure city sells is completely unnecessary and excessive. But it also runs on waste diversion. Much of what the store sells would have otherwise gone to the landfill―or one of those clothing donation boxes and then on to wreck the local economy in some third world country. Treasure City tries to keep it local.
On the pragmatic side, a thrift store requires far fewer resources to start (what an MBA would refer to as “start-up capital”) than most other types of businesses. There is no comprehensive regulatory framework for thrift stores (yet) the way there is for cafes. We didn’t need a commercial kitchen, health inspection, etc. Also, since the whole premise of the store is that we are selling donated goods, we didn’t need money or credit to pay for our initial inventory; just the good will of the folks in the neighborhood.

0 Zoldier Wars #2: We Can’t Stop Progress But We Can Stop Patriarchy-Ben Axiom

Ben Axiom Holisticore

Ben Axiom HolisticoreI have to admit I’d been praying for the Earth Goddess to bring the collapse. I always thought the sooner the better because that would mean less weapons, less pollution, and less dead bodies to clean up when the shift hit the fan. I mean, if cataclysmic earth changes and ensuing famine and pestilence would have thoroughly devastated modern society before machine guns, fossil fuels, and nukes, think of how much more elegant post-apocalyptic survival would be.

I know that sounds cynical and misanthropic, don’t get me wrong I truly love humanity, it was just patriarchal techno-industrial civilization that had to go. It had become a toxic specter looming across the globe, spanning the last 5,000 years. It had tainted the memory of millions of years of relative bliss, peace, and innocence that our tribal ancestors knew. In fact it had systematically obliterated the very memory of our tribal roots.

0 PUTREFACTION INTERVIEW by Sean Fitzgerald

  • June 13, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · Interviews · PE Web Zine

Putrefaction are definitely one of the more interesting bands in Ireland today. It’s been 5 years since their great demo ‘Destroyers’ (http://www.mediafire.com/?1zdwfutzoh2) which really gave them time to master their craft. May 2012 saw the release of their debut album ‘Blood Cult’ on vinyl. It’s been called ‘Mad Max’ crust, a great term. But to give and idea of the sound I hear SEPULTURA mixed with HELLSHOCK, but in saying that it’s obviously very much their own sound. So while the album is being pressed I spoke to Eric and Eoin from the band about the new album, life in Ireland, and the world we live in.

PE: I read recently that vinyl records are better environmentally than CD’s and DVD’s. That albums are usually never discarded into landfills due to their increasing value. And that unlike other plastics vinyl brakes down naturally in comparison. So the first album is vinyl only, is it because of environmental principles or are you all vinyl nerds? Do you think there is a future with download only releases?

ERIC: WOW. i didn’t actually know that! well its vinyl only mainly cuz vinyl is our favourite medium and I guess it’s the most common/loved format in the diy punk scene. Personally I have always hated cd’s and I’m just getting to grips with downloading stuff. We’re gonna make the lp available for download too. Tapes are great too. We released our demo on cassette. A lot of this argument comes down to privilege I guess. I mean if you can afford vinyl that’s great but that’s not the reality for a lot of punks all over the world. On the other hand, vinyl is the best way to get across art work, lyrics etc because of the size and to me it sounds best. I reckon a good compromise is to do vinyl and download. In previous bands I’ve been in we had our stuff re-released in Eastern Europe and Asia on cassette cuz at the time that format was more affordable for people. That’s also an option. Still for me you cant beat that big slab of wax with a shit load of inserts, posters etc. A lot of my politics were informed by bands putting that kind of effort in when I bought records as a teenager like CONFLICT, SUBHUMANS,OI POLLOI etc. The environmental side you’re talking about is definitely a plus. I always feel like a hypocrite slightly in relation to any project that involves mass production. Its so hard not to support some bunch of bastards or fund some form of ecological exploitation, whether it be tapes, vinyl, stickers, paper etc. We debated this quite a lot when it came to making t-shirts and decided on spending the extra money on non-sweat shop, organic, reliably sourced cotton t shirts, which Tom (KILLER SCREENPRINT) was thankfully able to sort out. You do what you can to escape the mega machine, but its fuckn difficult in this day and age..

EOIN: Well the first thing for me is that I just really dislike CDs, horrible things they are .I’ve never been a fan of any format apart from tapes but they aren’t really viable these days. Vinyl is still going strong. I think I only really like it because you can cram a load of extras stuff in there!!! To be honest, although I still buy vinyl releases from time to time I barely listen to records. I mostly listen to music on mp3 player while doing other things rather than actually sit down and give it my full attention. I’m easily distracted! Some pioneers are releasing music in new ways like a download code on t-shirt/poster/mug/whatever, it seems really tacky to me but in some ways it probably makes sense. At least you’ll end up using whatever the physical object happens to be!

2 SOULFUL AGGRESSION Down the Institution CD

  • June 12, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

I have very mixed feelings about this and almost didn’t review it, but I’m not here to make decisions for people, just to give honest reviews. This is three-piece from Maryland and it’s put together really well. There’s a free sticker and I’m a fan of the minimal packaging, avoiding any unnecessary crap that might detract from the overall experience. The recording is crisp and the levels perfect adding a nice kick to the RAMONES influenced rock and roll style. Lyrically the band goes less in the direction of straight-forward politics and leans heavily towards the real life experience side of things. Up to this point, I’m totally on board and thoroughly enjoy this release. The issue I take with the lyrics comes with using the word gay in a derogatory manner. I’m not the PC police by any means, but I’d like to think that the punk community would be above the social bullshit that is such a problem in mainstream culture and we should at least keep an open dialogue about these issues, if not flat out call each other out in these situations. My other gripe is with the song The Emo Lesbian Connection where the chorus states that a big reason that so many women are homosexual is due to the fact that emo boys aren’t manly enough. I realize that a large part of the population believes that sexual orientation is a choice, and for some folks that may be the case, though many would argue that it’s who you are from birth. Punk shouldn’t have boundaries or limitations put on it, which is why I chose to review this CD and leave you to decide whether or not you want to pay the $10 for it. I’m all for freedom of expression, but I also rather listen music that doesn’t refer to sexual orientation in a negative fashion. (Jake)

0 June 11th! STAND IN SOLIDARITY WITH PRISONERS!

  • June 8, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · News · PE Web Zine

The international day of solidarity with Marie Mason and Eric McDavid and other long-term anarchist prisoners is only a few days away! June 11th began as an international day of solidarity with long-term anarchist prisoner Jeff “Free” Luers in 2004. At the time, Jeff was serving 22+ years. Infuriated by the environmental devastation he saw occurring on a global scale, Jeff torched three SUVs at a car dealership in Eugene, OR. The sentence imposed on him was meant to send a clear message to others who were angered by capitalism’s continued war on the Earth’s ecosystems – and to those who were willing to take action to put a stop to it. Jeff is, after all, not alone in his concerns about climate change, fossil fuels, pollution and genetically modified organisms.

After years of struggle, Jeff and his legal team won a reduction in his sentence and he was released from prison in December 2009. But in the years intervening Jeff’s arrest and release, the FBI had carried out a series of indictments and arrests in an attempt to devastate the radical environmental and anarchist communities. Two of the people caught up in this maelstrom of repression were Eric McDavid and Marie Mason.

To find out if your town is putting anything on for June 11th, check out this site: http://june11.org/events.html

If your city isn’t on the list, you should give this resource page a read: http://june11.org/resources.html   and set up an awesome event to stand in solidarity with June 11th!

5 Opening The Cages interview with with Mike XVX by Comrade Black

  • · Features · Interviews · PE Web Zine

Mike XvX is a long time animal liberation activist, and singer songwriter who tours in the punk, folk punk and hardcore circuits bringing the message of resistance through music and action wherever he goes. Mike has toured extensively, and has taken part in animal liberation campaigns on four continents. Mike is currently organizing a multimedia tour incorporating different genres of music, poetry, film, and demos bringing the message of militant animal liberation and community activism across the west coast.

PE: Tell us a bit about some of the stuff you have been involved in over the years?

Mike XvX: Well other than this tour, I’ve been pretty busy the past few years. As a musician I’ve traveled to about 20 countries in the last three years which has been an amazing experience all on it’s own. Touring as a solo musician gives me the flexibility to tour as frequent as I’d like, wherever I’d like. I feel very fortunate to travel as much as I do to talk about animal rights in front of so many different people the world over, and in that period of time I’ve been lucky enough to build lasting relationships with a lot of folks I normally would have never had the opportunity to meet.

Other than music, I’ve been involved in the animal rights and other movements for almost a decade now. I’ve worked alongside several different groups in that time, and I try to make myself available to anyone that needs help in their campaigns. I work regularly with Portland and Seattle Animal Defense Leagues, volunteer as often as I can with Portland Anarchist Black Cross, as well as have done work for groups like Sea Shepherd in the past. In March of 2011 I traveled to Japan with Sea Shepherd to document the world largest cetacean slaughter, which is the Dall’s Porpoise slaughter in Otsuchi, Iwate. Incidentally, this was also the location of the epicenter of the tsunami that destroyed all of Japan’s northeastern coast, and myself and five other activists narrowly escaped with our lives.

After 16 years of inactivity, Charlie Chainsaw has decided that it’s a
good time to assault the world with another 7” with four tracks that are
so drowned in distortion that you could almost get away with playing it at
any speed you wanted to and still get the desired effect. The best way I
could describe the sound is KK NULL covering the Ramones. Once you adjust
to how noisy it is, you’ll realize how melodic the writing actually is. As
far as I can tell this is a one-man project utilizing old school
electronic drum technology. I can’t find much information to share about
this except for a discography. There’s no lyrics in the sleeve or on line
that I can find, but the album photos and song titles are pretty
interesting. If you’re into that lo-fi oldschool noise sound, then this is
your thing. Whether or not there are more releases depends on if this one
sells. The power is in your wallet! (Jake)
