Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

0 Femacoffin – Demo 2013

femacoffinConsisting of members from well known crust bands Stormcrow (Tony and Brian) and Sanctum (Nick). Femacoffin from Oakland, California keep the original heavy crusty death metal approach to their music like their previous bands. Through the doomy hecatomb, there are strains of bands like Bolt Thrower and Misery. The term ‘warcrust’ has been knocked about for this kind of Bolt Thrower styled crust, which bands like Last Legion Alive, Warmaster and of course Stormcrow and Sanctum play so well. I personally don’t care what it’s called, I just love real heavy well played filthy musick so I could listen to this on repeat all day. These are crusty punks playing death metal but with a political vent which for me gives it the extra kick in the arse. The band themselves have tagged it on Bandcamp as “punk-crust-death metal-decay-sadness” which I think describes the sound quite well.

I can’t wait for their five song cassette demo which is in the works, which I’m sure will be as heavy as a ton of bricks… doomy crust ridden bricks that is. (SFitzgerald)

3 Fatum – Time Passes To The Dark

Fatum Time Passes To The DarkIt’s great to finally hear the new album from Moscow’s dark crust/stenchcore band Fatum. Thick dirty bass, guttural echos and an eternal sense of dread. The band have progressed to a slightly more metallic sound since their last release ‘Skverna’. But still keep the heavy influences of Antisect and Axegrinder fully intact. Tracks three and four ‘Time is running out’ part I and II is their take on Antisect’s ‘Into the Darkness’. So they wear their influence as always very openly on their sleeves, in every sense of the word.

Going since 2007 their sound has gotten better and better. If you like your music dark and heavy this band is for you. They have a split in the works next with fellow stenchcore heads Cancer Spreading from Italy. They are currently looking for DIY labels who want to get involved with it’s release. ‘Time Passes to The Dark’ is released by Drunk With Power Records (SFitzgerald)

0 Hellkrusher / Deadly Reign 7″ EP

Hellkrusher / Deadly Reign

UK’s legendary Hellkrusher are back with a split EP along with Texas’s Deadly Reign. Hellkrusher like Doom and Antisect are a band who have come back, but haven’t lost any of their energy or anger. They still deliver real heavy Discharge tinged crust, all well produced and recorded by Bri Doom at Studio 1in12 in Bradford. It’s hard to believe their last release was in 1999 (‘Victims Of Hate’ on Skuld), I’m sure D-beat collectors must have their split with Disclose high on their want lists. As far as I know they have another split in the works with Bulletridden too. And if it’s anything like this it will be more serious grim discourse played as heavy as possible. Great to see them back.

Deadly Reign are comparably new with old heads from World Burns to Death, Scarred For Life, Kegcharge, Century Of War and many other bands. And play that style of punk which if you like me, spent the nineties buying records by bands like Hellkrusher, Dischange, Wolfpack and Disfear, you will love Deadly Reign. These guys also have a real well produced sound with a hail of heavy drumbeats and filthy riffs. And sing of the horrors of war and religion, that remain ever constant in this world. Released by ‘Rescued From Life’ records who in the past have released stuff by Syphilitic Vaginas, Bloody Phoenix and War Master. [Rescued From Life]

0 Crutches – D-Beat Tsunami EP

Crutches - D-Beat Tsunami
I love just about every d-beat band that has ever come out of Sweden. From Anti Cimex, Wolfpack, Totalitär, Avskum and everything in between. If I had to choose another music genre that I like, it would have to be fast and heavy distorted punk from Japan like Death Side and Crow. Who I’m sure took great influence from the aforesaid bands. As well as their music of course it’s the bleak imagery on their records. That too is another thing I love, the look and sound from a vinyl record. Now before I wander off and rant about other things I like, I should say that I am trying to build this all up to a point. So let’s turn up the overdrive and mix all that stuff together. Now we have a great new 7″ vinyl EP by Crutches from Malmö, Sweden.

I think the title alone ‘D-Beat Tsunami’ shows they wear their influence on their sleeves. So with that in mind, I couldn’t wait to put this on the record player and up the volume. The EP’s intro riffs and vocals are reminiscent of Scottish band Sedition, then it shifts into heavy D-beat with cries of ‘fire’ being shouted from behind the chaos. The next track on this side opens up with the sound of what’s like someone blowing into a plastic pipe. Then it goes into a real stomping punk beat and riff through a wall of furious feedback. Lyrically the band sing about homophobic idiot’s, the constant war/hate against world governments and burning the place to the ground.

Now for the ancient custom of turning the record over and lining up the needle. And into an industrial sound of banging pipes and voice samples. This of course leads us nicely into another reign of squalling distortion accompanied by strong gusts of shrieked vocals with a stomping d-beat. If you like d-beat punk or even if you think you don’t. Have a listen to the sheer profusion and devotion to sound of distortion. Ten out of ten fists for this. [on Distroy Records]

0 Last Under The Sun – ‘Hooligan Jihad’ Review

  • December 8, 2012

  • · Reviews

Hooligan Jihad
Pollution spills from industry, then forcibly spews it’s sewage into our atmosphere. Religious war and depression weighs heavily on us, this is our neoteric genre. In the meantime, as you trudge through this cold December, all you hear everywhere is the jingle-jangle of christmas songs. Pass the ‘Hooligan Jihad’ EP please, I need a hit of reality.

On this EP, Last Under The Sun deliver five songs of terror and the harsh realities of life. In that same apocalyptically bleak way that bands like the Subhumans and Crass have done in the past. But they are singing about our current day in a direct way “how many people die, for a worthless cause… I dont wanna die in some desert war”. It is all about our politically violent world, but at times it’s done with some humor like on the song ‘Hooligan Jihad’. How can you forget the lyrics “You can’t play crust in fucking flip-flops…”.

Frantic and pissed off, members also make up Birmingham’s infamous Police Bastard, who had a split with War//Plague on Profane Existence last year. Which is no surprise as you could draw parallels in the style they play. Very much a no excuses crust styled hardcore with it’s roots firmly in DIY hardcore punk. There certainly is great production and tight musicianship on this too, without losing a raw punk sound. There are great elements to this like on the song ‘Beautane’, which made my dog twist her head in strange ways in trying to decipher what the sounds were. It has gloom-ridden sounds and samples, Big Black/Ministry instrumental like playing making it more dense and machine-like at times. You could never say Last Under The Sun are following any particular music genre with tracks like this. It is a serious gem of a track with added post-apocalyptic ambient sound effects. But that ambience is well and truly broken when ‘Hooligan Jihad’ breaks into high gear. Well worth checking out.

0 ILandsProblem Misanthropic Kängpunk

ILandsProblem from from Örebro, Sweden do not play d-beat or crust punk. I have been warned they play Kängpunk. But to me they remind me of their fellow countrymen Wolfbrigade or that misanthropic generation era of Disfear.

After recording two demos their singer left this year to play with Subwaste. But the band battled on, getting guitarist Rumppan to take over on vocal duties. And now their album is to be released on Yellow Dog Records in Berlin, the test pressing went this week. And should be available on red vinyl and 100 on black. They follow a great roster of bands on that label from Pisschrist, Guided Cradle, Cyness, Madame Germen and so many others. This is a new track from the upcoming release.

‘Grave New World’ is an infamous Discharge album, released in 1986 that saw them go hair metal. High pitched vocals and cock rock riffs with a hint of the old Discharge riffs lurking underneath. Oh how we all roared, laughed or sat in disbelief at just how different this album was. But I have a confession to make, I unbeknownst to my punk friends started listening to it on my own. And started to actually like it, but would have flat out denied that at the time. Well here we are all these years later since that album and we have had D-beat and hundreds of Discharge ‘Why’ era style bands. But what if we were all wrong? What if we had denied what could have been a whole new wave!

Enter Thisclose who have finally turned it all on it’s head. Formed by some Scottish punks who have done time in various noisy punk bands throughout the years. But now wear their collective hearts on their sleeves and show just how things should have went after ‘Grave New World’. High pitched vocals, Discharge riffs and song titles like “Two Monstrous Distro Piles” and “But After The Rigs”, I’m hooked. Stand out tracks are ‘Sexcel’ for it’s heavy crunchy guitar sound with non stop manic singing and of course ‘Tear Up The Hedge’ which is GISM, which of course is a good thing. Available on cassette limited to a hundred for £3.50 including p+p in the UK. Forget D-beat this is the Grave New beat.
