While expecting a full on gloomy crust attack, the truth was harder to swallow. Or listen to, I should say, because my ears were pummeled in an experimental digi-grind attack of drum machine and super distorted guitar layered with movie samples, synth, oddly smooth bass runs and CREATION IS CRUCIFIXION-esque vocals. Though this demo is brutally harsh, all 6 tracks flow seamlessly together like the background noise in everyday life. A sick and twisted life. The art is very simple here: skull sketch on the front and lyrics printed on the back. This is perfect to break up your current set list. (Jake) wrongdoerwrongdoer[at]gmail.com
This demo is ten raging tracks of insane kick-to-the-head Scandinavian punk rock! There is just intense, blistering speed coming from BOMBANGREPP and each song comes in at under two minutes and several tracks struggle to make it to the one minute mark. This is exactly what you want from a demo: short, sweet, and to the point, leaving you hungry for the next release. BOMBANGREPP are definitely gonna shred your fucking face off, their speed borders on power violence, the vocals have an intense growling staccato delivery, and the drumming is pure brutality. The Swedes know how to do it and this band is no exception. As far as I know this is BOMBANGREPP’s only release thus far and they sure made it count. This CD-R has a no-frills sleeve and no insert or lyrics provided. The demo is hand numbered, I got number 12 of 50 so make sure to drop them a line to get yer hands on one of these babies. This shit will stick to your ribs!(JasonS) Self Released // bombangrepp[at]gmail.com
This compilation avoids all of the trappings of many comps. Too many comps (especially CD comps) just load up a bunch of bands, too many bands, and dump them on the weary listener. One is left looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack trying to find that gem of a tune. I am delighted to see that on this comp there are only 5 bands and each turns in between 3 and 6 songs. In fact this has more of the feel of a multi-band split than an actual comp but since the songs from each band are in random order I suppose it’s more of a comp. Once I dug into the neat booklet that comes with the album (it should be punk law that all comps come with a booklet) I learned that this actually started out as a split between MDC and the Indonesian band HANKER HOAX HAPHAZARD but soon turned into a multi-band affair by adding TRIPLE X (also from Indonesia) and then a few other US bands: ASSPISS and CRACKBOX. The MDC tracks are not unique to this release, it’s a few songs from each of their last releases, 4 songs in all including the new classic ‘Patriotic Asshole’, that tune jams. Each band is great in their own rite but I really liked HANKER HOAX HAPHAZARD, good stuff. The sound quality is excellent and the packaging is pretty good too. Like I mentioned there is a cool booklet and even a patch of Suburban White Trash Records. The cover art is really cool and was done by a dude named Bryce Wymner. I feel like I have seen his stuff around before but I can’t place it. This is a quality release and an entertaining listen. (Clusterfuxjosh)

This is TRASHCAT’s second full length and was recorded over the last year or so. TRASHCAT is the new project of Darragh, previously the drummer for the RESTARTS. With that said, they really don’t have a lot in common with the RESTARTS other than the catchy choruses. Darragh has even opted to take the spotlight and plays guitar and does lead vocals, no more hiding behind the kit for him. His vocals have that cigarette smoke and whiskey drenched hoarseness to them that really works for this type of music and his guitar just hums so beautifully. The tone is perfect and his leads would even get a nod of approval from Mike Ness. TRASHCAT has hooks galore allowing the listener to be able to sing along on the first listen while they blast out true, blue and tattooed punk rock n’ roll. There is even a little ska thrown in to round out the songs a bit. I think this could appeal to a wider audience as their blend of tunes is more accessible, the production is squeaky clean and the lyrics are basically about partying and having a good time. So, I got this as a promo RIGHT before the last issue of PE came out, and did not have time to write this back then. Bummer. It’s already been reviewed over and over again. BUT, I am glad I had some time to spend with this in the meantime. Even though this came out in September, I still want to write this review.
Some of the reviews I have already read have been mixed. Most good, some bad. One that sticks out in my mind is someone saying that this particular WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM recording is stagnant and not that interesting. I think that is an unjust and hasty assessment. Here we have a band who has reshaped black metal and inspired a whole new generation. I can see this statement being valid MAYBE because their sounds is always consistent and this person said that because they did not realize that this is the final piece in a TRILOGY. Sure there are some songs that sound like reprises old tracks from other albums but once again, this is a trilogy folks, and an epic one at that.

Here we have the long-awaited full-length from Vancouver’s rawpunk powerhouse UNLEARN. These raw dismasters bring us 8 raw as fuck tracks of furious d-beat in the ancient Swedish tradition of ANTI-CIMEX, or more recently, DISKONTO. Loud, chaotic, noisy. Assault rifle drumming. Shrieking guitars without any needless wankery. Vocals that sound like Sam was gargling with Clorox after swallowing bits of shattered lightbulb. In other words, THIS IS THE SHIT. The production on this record is absolutely perfect for the genre. It’s lo-fi and blown out as fuck, but at the same time, there is no loss of sound. Every part of the band is audible and loud. My favourite aspect of this band – aside from their live show – is the lyrics. Unlike 95% of dis-worship bands out there, UNLEARN actually sets themselves apart in this department. They aren’t just aping the past masters by blatantly copying lyrics or intentionally putting broken English in there. No, these lyrics are all original, and fucking poignant. Instead of the standard descriptions of bodies littering battlefields, we have pointed, angry attacks against the system, the daily grind of living, and those who blindly follow without question. The brutal songs about war go beyond the clichés and attack the masters of war while describing the brutal aftermaths of their policies. It’s refreshing to see, in such a stagnant subgenre, a band that can give tribute to the past masters, while keeping it fresh and original. Destined to be a fucking classic. (Inbred)

I was really pumped to hear this, it came out in 2010 and it took until now for me to get a copy on my turntable, and this is only due to my room mate getting a copy from our buddy in the band that used to be in AXES TO THE SKY and CREAGRUTUS from Linc. He moved toAustin were THE ROLLER hails from, unfortunately for you Doom ridden bastards out there these guys are no longer with us, they played there last show with the mighty SAINT VITUS just a few months ago. Well enough attempt at a back story lets get to the music. When the needle first started coursing through the grooves it took all of me not to change the speed to 45, as it was so down tuned and slow I thought there was no way it was correct but before I could do so the drums cut through the sludge and bring the pace into my speakers. Not to say it doesn’t stay slow but it starts to be more comprehensive..They shouting starts with tales of blood, trials and war. Sort of poetic but in a good way, not to hard to figure out were they are going with this. Nice full sound slow heavy and punishing, there are even arts that remind me of early MISERY as well ASBESTOSDEATH if you live it slow and hard look no further. The whole LP is only 4 songs to give you an idea of the speed we are looking at. The cover and insert art that of earth, trees and various foliage, The one on the back has there Orange and Sunn equipment sitting in the middle of the woods and all I can think is how much of a pan in the ass it would have been to set all that up out there, that is some dedication dudes, great record and may you R.I.P. From the get go this band starts ripping it up with some heavy hardcore. For the most part it is pretty slow and heavy. The vocals are of typical hardcore fashion and definitely a strong point of this band. He fronts the band quite well giving off the emotion without giving up anything. Whether it is slow or fast these songs are just plain well written and pretty brutal. The second side of the record is one sort of long song compared to the other two. This songs has driving riffs with vocals sounding very similar to OI POLLOI and honestly my favorite of the three. The title track is about men trying to own women. I really commend bands that stand up for women especially when the band is all male. Lyrically this was perfectly written and executed quite well musically too. With only three songs this record was over way too quick making me on more than one occasion to flip the record and listen to it again just to get my fill. This is a band that I would love to hear a full length by to see what direction they would go. This is a great record and would be a very positive addition to any hardcore collection. Well, this is not the same DISCHARGE that we all know and love. Technically it’s the same band, but it sounds completely different. As the title states, this LP is their early demo recordings from March – June, 1977. If you’ve never heard this, and someone played it at a party, you would never guess who it is. No, this is not the raging D-beat hardcore that we’re all accustomed to. The punk on this record is so ’77 that it’s almost ridiculous, very much a product of its time. The music is extremely basic, very simple, very primitive, and completely callow. It doesn’t have the political, anti-war out rage either, instead we have songs with titles like; ‘I Don’t Care’, ‘Acne’, ‘I love Dead Babies’, and ‘Sweet Suburban Dreams’. And if the lyrical content wasn’t enough to convince you that this is actually a lost SEX PISTOLS demo, then the vocal style, which sounds strikingly similar to Johnny Rotten, will. There is no list of members who played on these demos, so I have no idea how many of the members went on to be in the later incarnations of DISCHARGE. The whole record screams of the early days of young, snotty, pissed off punks filled with teen angst. I guess if you’re a huge DISCHARGE completist, you should pick this up, or if your really into the raw, primal ’77 punk sound. The record is pressed on pink vinyl, if that helps. This one is for all you black metal fans out there…Although this is not the typical black metal band, or album. If yer into the last three DARKTHRONE albums then you will like this one. This has a similar approach in the sound and concept of albums like F.O.A.D. but lyrically very different.
Now, I am not gonna say that black metal lyrics are all sunshine and roses….they are a black metal band after all, but in my perception there is at least something constructive going on here and there and it’s not completely filled with hatred and disdain for the world around us. Craft on the other hand, has nothing positive to say really, but then again the album is called “Void”. … Continue Reading
