4 Turning Words into Action: An Interview with ALF The Lone Wolf

Abdul Haqq, more commonly known as Walter Bond, is currently serving a 12 year sentence for his actions taken as an operative of the ALF. Abdul has been involved in the hardcore and punk scene for about 2 decades and even had a song written about him by a well known band. I have been writing to Abdul for ever since his most recent arrest on July 23 2010.

This interview was conducted by Comrade Black.

PE: This isn’t the first time you’ve been imprisoned for your political actions. Can you tell us about why you were locked up before, and what you are in jail for this time?

AH: My first time in prison was for one charge of 2nd degree arson and aggravated criminal mischief. It was a state case in Iowa for burning down the home and extensive methamphetamine operation of a major drug dealer. A bit of retribution for manufacturing poison to the community, and my family in particular. Currently I am serving a 12 years in federal prison for the 2010 ‘ALF Lone Wolf’ arsons. I burned down a Sheepskin Factory in Denver, a Leather Factory and a restaurant that sold Foie Gras (bloated duck liver) both of these businesses were in the Salt Lake City area.

Even though this just came out I would swear that it came out no later
1995. This is their 3rd full album(there’s an EP and a bunch of songs on
comps). Either way, it has a ton of energy and power, without getting
sloppy. For the most part each song rides a nice fast pace with the
guitars ripping through riffs with a tone that’s on the cleaner side of
distorted. I know that doesn’t really make sense, but what I mean is that
their tone isn’t overly fuzzed out with all the bass turned up on their
pedals and amp. It’s a little like Scott Ian’s tone during the “Among the
Living” era of ANTHRAX(the US thrash band not the UK anarcho band). It has
a nice crunch to it. Speaking of great tone, the bass has a nice bounce to
it. It’s just bright enough that it doesn’t get lost in the mix and does a
great job nailing down the rhythmic foundation with the drums, which are
mixed really well. Each symbol rings through clearly without all sounding
the same and the snare has a nice tight snap to it. Sorry to go on and on
about the tone, but the sound quality on this album is great, which shows
that C.D. really care about their art. Another thing that makes this album
so good is the diversity of styles that come through. I hear everything
from CRUCIFIX to CRIMSHRINE to BORN AGAINST on here. On the visual art
side of things, the cover is simple: white with a picture of cattle on the
front and back, the lyric sheet is black and the vinyl is white. Nice,
simple and balanced. All the lyrics are translated into English and are a
mix of fun and deadly serious, with some songs explaining the relevant
political history of Malaysia in order to give the song clear meaning for
those of us outside the area. I can’t recommend this enough. (Jake)

0 GUT BUCKET – Shattering Your Faith CD Review

Before I took a good look at the artwork on the CD, I read the info that
the band sent. It warns: ”Due to our poor upbringings and a education from
public schools we regret to inform you that the words cock, cunt, fuck and
shit are vigorously used throughout “Shattering Your Faith”. Fair enough,
I’m no prude. Looked over the CD. The artwork looks like a highschool
notebook full of stoner sketches of monsters, crucifixions, dead bodies,
etc. Now I was starting to get the picture. Before listening to the CD, I
popped in the “Total Brute Force” bonus DVD to get a better look at these
guys. Lots of beer, hair and weed scattered throughout live sets, studio
footage and homemade videos with shark attacks. The women back up singers
in this are called Cannibal Clam. Ahem. So, on to the music. It’s
oldschool grindcore/punk/crossover that seems like it could have been a
Billy Milano side project. They’ve recently lost their lead vocalist, but
will carry as a three piece with the bass player picking up the slack.
Wait a minute! There’s no guitar! Yep, a three piece with two bass players
and a drummer. I’m really into that idea especially since the recording on
the CD is done really well and the bass tone is awesome. All low end all
the time. No lyrics were included, but everything is pretty straight
forward and with songs like Faceless Stump, Diebrator(the ballad of Kildo)
and Hell Cocks, you know what you’re in for. The vocals aren’t gurgle
grind, pig squeal or garbage disposal as much as they are straight up
cookie monster style, which makes it easy to follow along. Personally, I
prefer my grind to be either political or pure psychotic gore, but this
something that would work well on a Sunday afternoon in the background at
a BBQ. It does come with earplugs, though. (Jake)

0 KOHOSH Surivival Guide LP Review

For those of you that haven’t heard, there’s a little band called KOHOSH that hail from Seattle, WA. And if you haven’t heard of them yet- well it’s about damn time! You may already know their members from previous stellar bands such as AGATHA, ALLIACEOUS, CONTRAVENE, CREOSOTE, GARMONBOZIA, OROKU, PIPSQUEAK, ROANOKE, SKARP, and SNUGGLE, to name a few. If you like to dance around to the aforementioned slabs of vinyl at home in your spare time (you know who you are), then this will be a welcome addition to your collection…
Musically, they can best be described as melodic-anarcho punk, with whispers of influence from older bands such as CRASS, THE MOB, or ZOUNDS hinting at the roots. One can definitely hear strong similarities to more current indoctrinations of anarcho-punk and melodic crust bands the members have previously been a part of, such as CREOSOTE, CONTRAVENE, and GARMONBOZIA. I also hear influences from other international bands such as Sweden’s BURNING KITCHEN, and Poland’s POST REGIMENT. That being said, KOHOSH’s music is layered, complex, and beautiful, drawing off multiple influences to find and hone it’s prolific sound. Dual guitars dance in front of rolling bass lines and powerful drum beats. The cello brings us from almost haunting, dismal, intimate moments to energy packed crescendos, and the female-fronted vocals with backing male accents reel it in to make this album a powerhouse. Pretty and melodic, then catchy and upbeat; each song is an epic build up and break down. There are only 5 of them on the album, so don’t be surprised if you want to listen to this one over and over to take it all in.
Art work for the outside of the album is two toned paper-bag brown and black. The cover art features a drawing of two adorable anarcho-punk prototypes, read: dread-mullets, patched clothing, backpacks filled with rope, slingshots, and arrows. If one could span the horizon and peer into the distance, behind the foreground of a Slug and Lettuce cover Hush drawing, these kids would be sitting on a grass hill off in the distance. The back cover drawing shows multiple masked faces in action in a squatted building. Fists raised and white flags waving, it is a two-dimensional image of defiant hope- a theme that is echoed over and over again in the lyrics of the album.
Poetic, somber and resistant, Taryn’s lyrics to Survival Guide are personal and powerful. Themes of moving forward yet feeling stuck, seeing the pain in the eyes of her friends and their actions, being independent and standing your own ground. Questioning the self-destructive behavior she sees around her. Reaching for the light she sees in the darkness. There is hope in these lyrics, but it is not without its pain.
A great project that was collectively put out by Acclaim Collective, Cut the Cord that Records, Persons Unknown Records, Tomorrow Belongs to Us, and Trujaca Fala. KOHOSH are going on a west coast tour this APRIL, so you may get the chance to see them live and pick up a copy of the LP to boot! There’s a lot to listen to here in KOHOSH Survival Guide; for fans of any of the bands or labels listed above, I give this one two hitch-hiker thumbs up. (Maygun)

0 FOKKUM – Notice Yourself CDR Review

Old punks never die they just stand at the back…or try harder! This Dutch
power trio is as DIY as it gets and have a unique sound as well. The
vocals have a posi hardcore feel to them in the vein of IGNITE or UNIFORM
CHOICE while the music leans towards the d-beat side of things. This album
is super upbeat and positive from start to finish, even though they tackle
some very serious subject matter such as the oppression of women, the
horrors or eating animals and religious dominance. There’s also a nicely
done cover of DOOM’s Slave to Convention wrapping up the disc. While the
music is awesome, I’d like to bring attention to the huge list of links on
a pamphlet included in here: easily 40. Most of them are conspiracy
related and are right up my alley. We’ve got links to chemtrail sites, the
illuminati, infowars and David Icke. It’s like an information overload!
Sure, some of the sights may just be wound up kooks spouting off
craziness, but if you sift through all the wackiness, there’s some really
good information to be found. Now, being a Dutch band, I wasn’t able to
read all of the info that came with the disc, but they did translate the
lyrics into English and were nice enough to include some stickers. Check
their website for a bunch of releases and other swag. Punk effing rock.

1 Reflections and criticism on six months of occupation by Damien Inbred

I was assigned to write a piece on the Occupy movement, to mark the six month anniversary of Occupy. I find myself conflicted here, because – like any global movement – there are so many mixed feelings, and conflicting opinions. On one hand, I’m super inspired by the history of the movement, and the fact that so many apathetic or apolitical folks are waking up to the ills of global capitalism. On the other hand, there are a lot of aspects of the movement which are totally fucked up and need to be commented on. I don’t want to appear to be bashing an entire movement, and yet I don’t want to gloss over some of the fucked up attitudes and alliances. These things need to be dissected. But first, for the uninitiated – some history.

In late summer of 2011, the leftist “culture jamming” magazine Adbusters put out a call for activists to occupy Wall Street on September 17^th. Inspired by the Arab Spring uprisings which took hold over much of the Middle East earlier that year, the goal was to get people from all walks of life who had been affected by predatory capitalism to name and shame those responsible. While the initial protest was centered on New York as the center of American capitalism, it was quite clear that the social ills of the capitalist system existed everywhere in the country… not to mention in virtually every other first world capitalist nation. As the OWS encampment in Zuccotti Park grew in size and attracted more and more repression from New York’s finest, the mainstream media and representatives of the “left” half of the national corporate party (er, the Democrats) started paying attention. On one hand, the majority of the press condemned and mocked the movement (with a couple of notable exceptions), while the Democrats and their opportunist hacks attempted to co-opt the movement.

6 Former PE Magazine Editor Joel Olson Died This Week

We have just received word that Joel Olson, aka Joel Hippycore, AKA Doctor J passed away this week. Joel Olson was a member of the Profane Existence Collective in the early 90’s, while working on his PhD at the University of Minnesota, co-editing PE magazine issues 11-20 and contributing articles to several subsequent editions. During this time he was also the drummer for the PISSED—the band made up entirely of PE Magazine editors. Prior to joining Profane Existence, Joel was a one half of the Arizona based Hippycore magazine and record label. Joel was also a member of the Love and Rage Network in the 90’s, help co-found the anarchist Newspaper the Blast. After receiving his PhD, Joel moved back to Arizona where he was a professor at the Norther Arizona University and remained active in the social justice community. There have been countless posts regarding Joels death posted on his Facebook Page, giving a good picture of how many lives Joel touched:

Dear Comrades:

It has come to my attention that the esteemed activist, writer, and academic Joel Olson passed away while on sabbatical in Europe.

Joel was Associate Professor in the Department of Politics and International Affairs at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona, where he specialized in political theory. A noted expert on racial politics and extremist ideologies, he was the author of _The Abolition of White Democracy_ (University of Minnesota Press, 2004) as well as numerous articles and reviews. Joel was working on a second book, entitled _American Zealot: Fanaticism and Democracy in the United States_, at the time of his death.

During the 1990s Joel was involved with Love and Rage Revolutionary Anarchist Federation and later went on to form Bring the Ruckus! He was a well-known figure in the anti-racist and pro-immigrant movement in Arizona.

Details surrounding Joel’s sudden and very untimely death remain unclear, but it goes without saying that his comrades in the North American Anarchist Studies Network, and throughout the North American and international anarchist community, will very much miss him, and we give our love, sympathy, and solidarity to his family, friends, and loved ones during this most difficult time.

The Occupy Movement is the largest mass movement for social change since the 60s, and if it maintains momentum it may eclipse its predecessor in both brilliance and effect. But that’s only if we keep pushing. In retrospect, it’s as if the movement practically exploded out of New York in the fall, propelled by pictures of a vicious NYPD cop pepperspraying female protesters, foreshadowing scenes we would see reenacted all across America. I’d just moved to the Bay Area from New York to join a startup, and I remember telling my best friend about the news I’d read that some protesters had moved into a park to “Occupy Wall Street” – I was ecstatic, but disappointed as I’d just driven across the country.

“The revolution’s starting, but it’s all the way in fucking New York,” I said. I had no idea. I was aware of and had passively participated in the activist community in New York for as long as I could remember. First as one of those kids you see marching along, on the shoulders or holding the hands of their parents. I have memories of marching through the streets of Manhattan to protest the about-to-begin invasion of Iraq, as New Yorkers waved out their windows and sat on their fire escapes cheering us on.
