Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

0 WRETCHED OF THE EARTH – demo – Cassette

wretched of the earth

As I’m sitting in my semi dark basement blasting this fine recording, I feel the need to get my gripes(well, only one) out of the way. During the beautifully composed melodic intro, it sounds as if the two guitars are slightly out of tune with each other. Obviously not a huge deal, but worth mentioning. After that, I can’t think of a bad thing to say. The way the demo kicks off reminds me of a scene in 28 Days or 28 Weeks Later when things are looking extra bleek. The writing is captivating. It’s very busy, but not in a “mathy” way. All three stringed instruments twist in and out of each other while flirting with the same melodies and rhythms. It has elements of that style that TRAGEDY brought years ago, but with new life breathed into it. The power and detail of the drumming also bring this to a whole new level. I love hearing bands that push punk further and further instead of just playing the same things that they listen to. While this is happening, Chomsky and Zinn styled poetic hatred pour through the mics in the form of sincere anguished howling. Each set of lyrics has a bit of a back story printed along side them in a pocket size booklet that looks hand screened. Added bonus, a few stickers. Members from this band have been around for awhile in a number of different bands that we all know and love. This demo is limited to 100(looks like I have #100- yikes!), but have no fear, Yellow Dog from Berlin should be releasing this as a 300 press run LP. Totally worth hunting down. And, no, you can’t have mine. (Jake)

0 ULRIKE’S DREAM – Van 9 TOT 5 – LP

  • October 28, 2012
  • by backwoodsvegan
  • · Reviews

It would seem that everything that comes through my mailbox that has the Maloka Distro logo printed somewhere on it is really good. Now I can add ULRIKE’S DREAM to that list. The needle drops on the first track and I wait. It starts off calm, beautiful and melodic. After a few lines the distortion is fully kicked on, the double bass starts pounding, the bass lines rip and all hell breaks loose in a whirlwind hardcore attack! The lead(female) vocals have turned angry and sour setting a killer pace. Then they add some yin to the yang and  start the second track off with a little reggae style that feels like it has a NAUSEA flavor to it, but it quickly jumps back into fast hardcore drive. Track 3, You Walk in Line is more vicious that expected. The writing is varied on this, which keeps it from getting stale. At times there’s full on “tough guy” chugging riffs, smoothed out ska, straight up speed metal (No Dead Desire) and some acoustic for even more variety. All the songs are socio-political in nature touching on squatting, getting trapped in the “system” and scenesters. The package is rounded out with great sound quality, spot on mixing and a clean layout with black and white band pictures spread out through the lyric sheet. Like I said, Maloka never disappoints. 0 ANTHRAX All for the Cause CD

This has been an album that many of us have been longing for. Being stuck in a shitty redneck town from the late 80’s to the early 90’s really limited my means of finding good music (mostly 3rd generation recordings from vinyl, etc). I had the opportunity to get my hands on the CRASS @ sides cassette and I played that damn thing till the ribbon stretched. The ANTHRAX track on that comp completely floored me (along with all the other bands), but needless to say, once I heard them, I was sold immediately.

These guys had a true spirit and dedication for @narcho-punk and it was felt in the music and lyrics which left a lasting impression that made me jump when I heard they were reforming. I can openly say that due to their influence, they carved a bit of my character today.

All for the Cause is ANTHRAX as pure and wholesome as they were back in the day and is even released on their own DIY label GROW YOUR OWN. They’ve never lost their edge to play what’s in their hearts and tell a story in their music that makes you so damn proud to be a part of the DIY punk community. It was them (and their comrades) that brought us together back then and it’s them now to continue that communal glue that binds us like minded folk.

This album has a gamut of music that is catchy, thoughtful and full of angst, and questions the very heart of our dark world. “Happy” is a great track that makes you want to sing along with a raised fist “Rise above the bedlam, take control…don’t let the powers that be, dilute your soul”. This album is great all around. The production is clean, thought out and meaningful. Given, this is about 30 years later from their younger days, so it’s not that quintessential “CRASS” style fuzz recordings (BTW, did everyone share the same guitar pedals back then for recording?), it’s the modern day and with modern production, but needless to say, their hearts have never left the punk playing field. An essential record to have. (Leffer) GROW YOUR OWN records/

0 20 MINUTES DE CHAOS We Don’t Need Your Police LP

  • October 24, 2012

  • · Reviews

Well shit howdy! After getting half way through writing this review, my laptop died. Well, not so much mine, but one my boss lets me use at home. Not important. Anyway, everything I wrote immediately disappeared in half a second. So…the first thing you’ll notice is the CRASS influenced military font on the border framing a creepy as fuck clown holding an old timey round bomb and then a bunch of things that add texture, but don’t make sense to me. When you pull out te sleeve, the lyrics(some French, some English) are on one side and there’s pictures of show flyers and photos of the band in the studio. Ya know, even the center of te record is a bit CRASSY. Anyway, 20 MINUTES kills it! Every track is just unapologetic brutal crust that’s mostly woman fronted accompanied by raspy male vocals. I immediately thought of NAUSEA, NUCLEAR DEATH TERROR and FLEAS AND LICE. All the lyrics are fiercely political and aren’t just rehashed war formula staples. They tackle the integrity of the crust scene and comment on the recent global upheavals and question work life that starts every unsatisfying day with the blip of an alarm clock. The mix and recording are perfect. I love when well written songs are preserved properly. Ever buy something from a good band that you just can’t listen to? Not this one! Top notch from start to finish! Another staller release from Maloka. (Jake)

0 PROLETAR / GREBER split EP

  • October 23, 2012

  • · Reviews

Ahh, good old no-frills, non-techy grindcore. I don’t get down with much grind these days, but on a split 7”, I can definitely get into it. Especially when it’s as good as this. PROLETAR play old-school grindcore which remembers a time when grind was another form of hardcore punk! They hail from Indonesia, and appear to be influenced by the mincecore masters AGATHOCLES. Not usually the hugest fan, but a split 7” is the perfect format for this. In fact, by the time it ended, I was still wanting more. That’s a great sign. As their song says, “Grind for better life!”
On the flip-side is GREBER, who are a two piece (bass and drums, respectively) metal band, who are actually pretty cool. It takes a lot to make a two-piece doom(ish) metal band sound interesting, but there’s enough going on between the two members to make them sound really interesting. The vocals are low and gruff, but not growly. There’s not much info about GREBER included, and there’s really no bands I can compare them to. I suggest you check them out though, they’re pretty damn cool. Another great release from Suburban White Trash – great cover art, too! (Inbred)

0 MALATESTA s/t EP

MALATESTA are a German crust band that began in 2009. This is their first release, and it’s a rager! They are inspired by the Swedish and Portland dark crust scenes of the earlier part of this century (WOLFBRIGADE, TRAGEDY, etc) but exist on a much more lo-fi plain. The lo-fi sound quality really helps them out, because they sound truly pissed and raw this way. When I use the words “inspired by”, I mean just that. These punks aren’t just another copy cat. You can tell which bands they love, but they take that and go in their own direction, making the songs and the style their own. This is a nice little surprise, and I can’t recommend this enough. Extra points for singing in their own language. (Inbred)

0 STAR FUCKING HIPSTERS / JESUS FUCKING CHRIST – The Fucking Split EP

  • October 23, 2012
  • by damieninbred
  • · Reviews

Before anything, let me warn you that the SFH side of this split is called “Passion of the Crust”, so take that as you will. The title song sounds like a faster, more aggressive non-ska LEFTOVER CRACK tune, which makes sense if you know anything about their connection to SFH. The lyrics could have been ripped straight out of the LOC playbook, and… if you’re into them, you’ll be into this. Next up is a horrendous cover of “Media Person” by RUDIMENTARY PENI. Some may think that it’s a good, or even an original idea to do an RP song in shitty ska-punk style. Not me, though – I just think it’s terrible. The last song is back in the same vein as the first track (although thankfully with much better lyrics, dealing with American imperialism). The best part about this track was the fact that Diana Mayora from SKELPTARSIS does the second vocals, and I think she fucking rules. I really wish Sturgeon would have stuck to guitar only and let Diana take over. Final verdict – better than most STAR FUCKING HIPSTERS material, but still leaves much to be desired. At this point you know who this band is – you like ‘em or you don’t.
JESUS FUCKING CHRIST take the B-side in a much better direction, sounding like a cross between the best of ‘90s east coast punk (PIST, AUS-ROTTEN, BROKEN) and ‘90s East Bay punk (GRIMPLE, FILTH) with a modern edge. Yeah, this is the shit! There is nothing cartoony about this band, they just bring straight-forward punk rage without any gimmicks or nonsense. I’m sad to say that this is the first time I’ve ever heard JFC, but after hearing their side of this split, I need to hear more! Their side is well worth the price of admission. Cheers! (Inbred)

1 TERLARANG / JAGERNAUT split EP

  • October 23, 2012

  • · Reviews

TERLARANG are a fastcore band from Malaysia on the political side of the hardcore spectrum, which I can always appreciate. Granted, fastcore isn’t usually my bag, but I can appreciate it in small bursts such as their side of this split. It’s not obnoxious like powerviolence, and the songs don’t all sound the same. The vocals remind me of CRUCIAL UNIT, although with more blast beats. Anti-society and anti-authoritarian lyrics make this one a surefire winner.
On the flip side is Greece’s JAGERNAUT, who play gruff crust-core, very much in the style of DISRUPT. No lyrics are included, but considering the political landscape in Greece right now, it’s fair to say that these punks fall into the anarchist camp (the song titles, “Hatred”, “Voice Less Leaders”, and “Dead Sect” give that impression as well). JAGERNAUT only play three songs, but they all fucking rule. I also hear some mid-90s Montreal crust creeping in here – GLOBAL HOLOCAUST, specifically. That ain’t a bad thing.
I always like it when two bands who sound very different put out a split together. It goes to show that the spirit of DIY crosses silly subgenre borders. This is a killer record for sure – go pick it up at once! (Inbred)

7 NOISE COMPLAINT – Fuck Off and Thrash EP

  • October 23, 2012
  • by damieninbred
  • · Reviews

Here comes NOISE COMPLAINT straight outta the UK, skatin’ and thrashin’ up a storm. They play fast, snotty hardcore in the “I don’t give a fuck” 80s style. This sounds like it should have come out of the Midwest in 1982, instead of London in 2012. I’m not really into the whole rehashing of the 80s hardcore thing, but this really isn’t that bad. High energy, and on a 7” format at 45 rpm, there isn’t enough time to become boring at all. I’ll bet these dudes are killer live. However… Lyrically, this is apolitical as hell… sometimes to the point of being over the top offensive. Case in point, the lyrics to the song “Religious Fuck”, which blatantly fantasize the raping of a nun. Look – I despise religion as much as the next punk, but I will not support anything that promotes rape of any sort. Not fuckin’ cool, dudes. Too bad about that, because if it weren’t for that song, I’d definitely recommend this record for your non-political thrashing needs. However, since I’m too “PC” to recommend pro-rape bullshit, I’d advise you to skip this and check out some of the other killer bands on Suburban White Trash instead. (Inbred)

Never heard of this band before but finding out more about them, this band is from Helsinki, Finland.  Apparently they do not play any shows. This is some down and gritty punk rock reminds me a lot of the Sub/hum/ans or Citizen Fish. A total of 4 tracks. Amazing guitar riffs are in the first song “48 Balls” next up is “You know What You Are” again another gritty punk rock song.  Now it’s time to flip over to the B-Side the first song on the b-side is “Who Wants it All” a very different start to this side not a very punky song kinda sounds like an 80’s song with the low vocals and kinda a keyboard sounding guitar/drum combination. Finally the last song is called “Strength Through Noise” very much like the last song with vocals but very strong guitar and more screaming then singing.  This is an amazing release I really hope the band sees this and will send me there first 3 e.p.’s because i would really like to check them out-(XbezerkerX)
