Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

0 I FAIL – Highways CD EP

  • September 7, 2012
  • by harleytexas
  • · Reviews

I FAIL is from Cincinnati, Ohio, and has put out a five song e.p. that has a lot of raw power in the songs, but the songs tend to be a little long in the tooth at times. From a short minute and a half, to almost six minutes long, they could have condensed some of the slower parts and just raged. The production is pretty clear, giving everything space to be heard, with the vocals being a bit screamo at times, but still retaing enough hardcore anger to make you take a listen more than once. This came in a foldout sleeve with a lyric sheetI did think that this was a more screamo version of late period Black Flag in parts, and some of the lyrics seem to be a bit Republican/Christian to me, but still a pretty good e.p. from a band that if they tightened up the songs a bit, could be interesting to hear where they go from here. This is out on compact disc, 10″ vinyl, and cassette. (Rick E)

0 SHORT CHANGED – We Will Bury You LP

  • September 7, 2012

  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

I’ve been a fan of this band for a while and looking at their discography I think I own all of their stuff! I’ve never seen them live but I have met just about everyone in the band through different trips to the Haz Mat. But with that said this is might be my first introduction to their new vocalist, Hekka Bekka. Hekka Bekka adds and interesting and new dynamic to the fold. Although the previous vocalist sometimes sounded like Jake from FILTH I think I like Hekka’s vocals better. She can sound nasty and crusty when she wants or just pissed and punk when that’s what the song calls for. Either way, she always sounds powerful and in command. SHORT CHANGED play Bay Area Hardcore Punk, that really describes them well, I mean they capture the spirit well. They play fast and punk, sometimes with a metal edge and always with a stinky, sticky crusty undertone. They sound like the scum stuck covering your shoes after a night of pitting it up at the Haz Matt. It’s dirty, filthy, punk rock. To sum it up they are punk as fuck! There is so much energy on this record and if I haven’t said it already this is by far their best release. Everyone in the band has really started to get comfortable behind their instruments and are simply kicking ass. I mean holy shit! They do a kick ass, tight as shit, cover of SEPULTURA’s ‘Refuse/Resist and fucking nail it, guitar solo and all!!!! Fuck yea! The song ‘Punx with an X’ is re-worked version of an earlier song called ‘X Marks the Spot’…I think…At least they have major similarities!! The cover art is awesome and certainly worthy of mention. Metal Matt seems to be the genius behind that. Also of note is that this was recorded by the late Jeff Leppard (RIP). It’s also great to see another killer release on the Rodent Popsicle label, Bill has been at it forever and certainly deserves some credit for keeping it DIY, he is truly one of the “Tru Punx”! Great effort from a great band. (Josh Mosh)

0 CRASS Ten Notes on a Summer’s Day – The Swansong digital download

  • · Reviews

I’m a big fan of bands releasing things digitally, in order to reduce packaging, save on fuel and cut down on pollution all together, but in this case, I wouldn’t mind the hard copy since, in true CRASS fashion, this release comes with a specially designed fold out poster and illustrated booklet. Their visual art has always been as interesting to me as their music. That said, you either love them or hate them. When I was a youngster they had a huge impact on my political view and I was completely sucked in to the world I believed they lived in. Yep, I became a total “Crasshole”. Whatever, better that than crack, yeah? I think I’ve actually encountered more punks that find them annoying than actually like them. Fortunately my wife loves them as much as I do. Anyway, This was recorded between the Winter of 1984 and Summer 1985, giving it more in common sonically with Yes Sir, I Will than earlier and rowdier releases like Feeding of the 5000 and Stations of the Crass. Tack two appears to be an instrumental version of the over ten minute first track. It’s a nice bit of insight into the construction of the sound collage. These two versions of Ten Notes on a Summer’s Day are followed by four short songs that cold almost be outtakes, but are free standing audio art bits. Another solid release by a band that has always been good for a controversy. (Jake)

0 JOE 4 Enola Gay 10″ EP – review

  • August 26, 2012

  • · Reviews

It’s interesting to hear this sort of sound these days, but thankfully Croatia hasn’t forgotten. Originally formed in 2008 as a quartet, then slimming down to a three piece in 2009, JOE 4 kicks out five tracks of straight forward noisy rock that one could swear was produced by Steve Albini. The recording is minimal in a claustrophobic sense, if you know what I mean. The guitar plays more in the background putting the focus on percussion and rhythm and not so much melody making everything feel choppy and angular. The bass is beautifully punchy and clean, while drums are crisp, full and simple. I’m not trying to say that the guitar isn’t important, because it truly adds that magical layer that brings everything together. It’s intense and aggressive like rack whiskey, but without the horrible after effects. Imagine the repetitiveness and jolting progressions of METROSCHIFTER without the sappy vocals and melody. If you like bands like SHELLAC or THE JESUS LIZARD you might be into this. There’s not a note or beat that isn’t calculated in any of the five tracks. It’s hard to listen to without deconstructing and analyzing it in order to fully appreciate the musicianship. I’ve never put this on as background music, I just put it on pay close attention. (Jake)

From New Brunswick, NJ, comes Soft Dov with an all out assault on your senses. Totally fast, loud, wild and to the point on this release with ten tracks in just over eleven minutes! A great d-beat sound on here played with all the intensity you need with an old school feel that makes this stand out from the pack. This makes you want to play it loud and get out the combat boots to thrash around the house and fuck shit up! The production is pretty good, clear for being self released and the playing is tight, no lyrics included in this, but the really cool part is that you can get the digital download for free! I would go look for this on cassette to keep it old school, but go get the free download and play the hell out of this one. (Rick E)

0 V/A We’re all in This Together LP – review

Twenty one track album on yellow vinyl with five bands each getting between three to six songs each. Two Indonesian acts have some great tunes, making this a fun listen, with TRIPLE X and HANKER HOAX HAPHAZARD having a great sound and lots of power on their tracks. MDC of course always deliver great stuff and hear they continue doing just that, with them giving a song to Tim Yohannon of MRR for those who remember him. ASSPISS and CRACKBOX both from the U.S.A. have some great tracks too and all of the bands have great sound quality on this record as well as good production. The MDC tracks are not new songs, but some from previous releases which still makes it worthwhile to hear this band and get people into them since they have been around since 1979 in Austin, TX as THE STAINS, and in 1982 they moved to San Francisco, California, and renamed themselves MDC. Great lyrics on this release and a totally cool album that will be stuck to the turntable for quite a while, the sad part is that it’s supposed to come with a patch, and I never got one in my album. If you see this comp, pick it up, it’s totally worth it! (Rick E)

Finally a new release from these hardcore hooligans from New Jersey.  It’s been a couple of  years since there last recording and PHAROAH has not lost there place as one of the up and coming hardcore/doom acts.  For this new release  you get 2 brand new songs.  “This House is Doomed” and “Waste”.  This is there heaviest stuff to date “This House is Doomed” clocks in at almost 7 minutes long and is epic, it will keep you listening the whole entire time so heavy you wont want to get up.  “Waste” is the shorter of the two songs I wouldn’t say it’s as heavy as the last track but still is heavy enough you’ll still enjoy it. For fans of INTEGRITY, NORTHLESS and PULLING TEETH. (Bezerker)

0 BRING DOWN THE HAMMER – S/T CD review

  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

BRING DOWN THE HAMMER gives us twenty tracks of blazingly fast, in your face and pissed off hardcore thrash with the last song being a fantastic slower, but still great punk, cover of LEON ROSSELSON’s “The World Turned Upside Down”. The production for this cd is surprisingly clear and the band is super tight and comes with the lyrics that are lots of fun to shout along with and pretty damn good as well. Super short songs with the cover song being the longest at just over two minutes, so you won’t get bored with guitar wanking, just to the point songs with great political and personal lyrics dealing with worker’s rights like on the title track, “Bring Down The Hammer”, anti religion on “What The Fuck” and others and against the far right wing thinker “Ann Coulter”, also it’s nice to see that the over thirty punks get some love on “Never Give In, Never Give Up”. Great first album for this three piece band from Tulsa, Oklahoma, worth tracking it down and plying it loud to piss off the right wingers in your town. (Rick E)

0 RATS ON RAFTS Emma Sofia 7″ – review

  • August 17, 2012
  • by backwoodsvegan
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

It’s always a pleasure to be asked to review something that is a little out of the ordinary for P.E. Not that I’m not interested in the brutal crust, but since Dawn and I live out in the woods with no cable and slow internet, we’re not always privy to what’s going on in indie music so, as I said before, this is always nice. This four piece from Holland has been quite active in the past few years with television appearances, film scores, national festivals and recording a few albums. It’s no surprise that they’ve received so much attention since their sound is very palatable with just enough grit to set them apart from other indie pop acts. RATS ON RAFTS borrow heavily from New Wave and 70s punk with a folky college rock feel that make for a very memorable listen even if you aren’t really a big post punk fan. The song Emma Sofia is so catchy and well written that it could stand alone asa solo acoustic piece. Having the rest of the instrumentation on the track just sweetened it up a little. The B side song, Kevin in Cabbage Town, is nice mid-paced bass driven number with tasteful use of guitar effects and has a splash of the CLASH in it, but also very much reminds me of the intro music to Kids in the Hall. Maybe it’s just me. Anyway, this is the sort of indie rock I can get into. (Jake)

0 BARREN WOMB / FORRÆDERI split 7″ – review

  • August 17, 2012
  • by backwoodsvegan
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

Knowing very little about BARREN WOMB, I was very surprised to find that they are a two piece. Their sound is very full of atmosphere and chaos, leaving no empty space or void where the listener might be left missing bass, second guitar, violin or any other instrumentation. They bring two energetic tracks of loose knit hardcore that lean toward the darker side of melodic and have a certain mid ’90s midwest post hardcore feel with some stressed out screaming balanced with singing. Sort of. It’s hard to explain, but at certain points it reminds me of THIS DAY FOWARD or I,ROBOT with a slight metallic undertone and deep poetic lyrics. On side  FORRÆDERI, this split takes a darker tone. Now, I’m not sure what the message is since the lyrics aren’t printed in English, but the music is seriously brutal and angry. If you aren’t paying close attention, you might not realize that there are three songs on this side. They flow together like a live RAMONES set with only a quick soundbite linking tracks two and three, which creates one hell of a mood. Their sound is blackened d-beat with a heavy grind influence with a gritty production that lends perfectly to their writing. Quite a few bands are attempting this style, but few can pull it off really well and I’m into the way FORRÆDERI use creepy melodies to make it their own. Overall this spit is great and only 300 were pressed, so don’t sleep on this one. Oh, and thanks for including stickers! (Jake)
