Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

1 JEALOUS COWARDS – s/t CD review

JEALOUS COWARDS – Jealous Cowards CD

The Intro track on this album reminds me of a classic rock styled song. It was pretty cool albeit a bit sloppy so I had a feeling that it wasn’t the style of the whole album. The first song kicks in with a faster and more distorted, faster version of the intro. This song sets the record off to a very energetic start. The song is definitely the most catchy on the album and one of the most upbeat making it my personal favorite track. The music has a very 80’s hardcore sound with a modern feel to it. They tend to stick in the mid paced range never going too fast or too slow. The distortion used is very light giving that vintage punk rock feel to it. Anything heavier would take away the personality of the music and would just sound like any other punk band. I like that they are not afraid to do things that would normally not be done on a punk record like the classic rock intro and the use of a harmonica at the beginning of another. The vocals are yelled adding to that 80’s sound. They are gruff enough to not be singing but light enough to feel some emotion behind them. The vocalist is well suited to his duties and brings the whole band together making it into a wonderful orgy of punk rock music to your ears. This is a band that can stand on its own merits while paying homage to early hardcore bands without stealing the sound of these bands and without coming off as another generic band looking to fuck the system. It is a breath of fresh air when you get a band that is doing something different than the current trends and doing it well. This band has reminded what I loved about those bands. (Travis Assault)

3 ANCIENT FILTH review

ANCIENT FILTH – s/t 7”

This is the first seven inch from ANCIENT FILTH, a brand new unit from Boston, Mass. There’s some brilliant new hardcore pressed into the grooves of this piece of wax. Start to finish, every song has raging energy and angst, there’s nothing dusty about any track on this seven inch. It’s kinda cool how a band can keep a lower profile and it just makes their music that much more impressive. I guess it must be because every fucking thing is spoon-fed to us in the information age. That being said, there are six intense tracks of hardcore punk with good mosh parts, breakdowns, riffing and several samples woven into the insanity that make this record more of an experience and just six songs. I’m not going to make any comparisons . Additionally, ANCIENT FILTH is right-on in the lyric department which makes them a double threat. Lately it’s been hard to find crazy awesome punk that also has well written lyrics. So anyway, ANCIENT FILTH’s lyrics are intelligent, pissed-off, and fucking straight-up smooth and their vocalist delivers them like a mad man. The seven inch comes with a screen printed poster/insert with the lyrics, explanations, an band info printed on the reverse.(Just a side note: My copy doesn’t have the arrow design on the front of the sleeve.)

This record is the shit! If you get a chance, get one of these. I have no doubt that we’ll be seeing more from ANCIENT FILTH, so get in on the ground floor. Badass.(JasonS)

0 BERSICKER demo CD review

BERSICKER demo CD
Maybe I’m just old, but I do really enjoy an album (or demo in this case)
that opens with an instrumental intro to set the mood. The cd opens with
feedback soon joined by very steady 2/4 drumming followed by some slow
riffing that fades into feedback. Track 2 is d-beat from start with plenty
of distortion, just short of noisy, and vocals fixed up with some reverb
and delay that give it that old school feel. The track is much of the
same: very same: solid d-beat crust worship, but very practiced and
polished. I’m really into the structure and tonality of the whole thing.
The artwork is exactly what you’d expect from a release such as this. The
cover is black and white with the band name dropped across an old photo of
bombs, while the back has an old shot of a well dressed man tying off
about to shoot up. The first song is about television numbing the masses
so that nobody seems to notice the world falling apart around us. Song 2
focuses on the horrors of war and the way war mongers portray themselves
to the accepting masses. If you go to their FB page, they’ve written a
lengthy manifesto detailing their take on just about everything. I’ll be
looking out for a full album by these folks. (Jake)

0 CRIATURA – Trampas LP review

CRIATURA – Trampas LP
More and more bands are popping all everyday, all over the world. Home
recording technology, programs that come standard in some computers and
the internet make so easy that it eliminates most excuses for not putting
out a CD or at least a quality demo. The problem is that its hard to hear
every band and good ones can go unnoticed for years at a time. That’s the
case for me with CRIATURA. They have quite a few releases, full lengths
and splits under their belts and this is the first I’ve heard of them.
Pinning down a description of CRIATURA is a bit difficult since their
sound is pretty unique, but after listening to them I’d have to believe
that bands in like CIRCA SURVIVE may have taken some influence from their
style. It’s a rare moment when the guitars are playing the same chords at
the same time, and there’s only one song that uses a “typically” punk song
format using power chords. Supported by very skillful, precise and
creative drumming, the guitars and bass delicately tease each other into
soft yet powerful melodic progressions using only a few effects like delay
and reverb with just enough distortion to make things fuzzy but without
losing clarity. Dual female/male vocals deliver poetically written words
that translate like a postcard from a close friend that you haven’t seen
in years that has spent time discovering the beauty and horror of the
world through self discovery and literature. Even in all their beauty, the
songs tackle issues like domestic violence, self-empowerment and
struggling against the establishment. Each line is more exciting than the
last and before you know it you’ve flipped the record four times. I highly
recommend this band. (Jake)

0 DEATH FROM ABOVE review

DEATH FROM ABOVE 4 Trax EP

When I was in high school I played in a band called DFA (Death From Above), we were a total thrash-punk crossover band that listened to healthy doses of DRI, VENOM, METALLICA, COC, the EXPLOITED, etc. We just jammed for our friends and had a good time representing RFHC (Roaring Fork Hard Core). We never recorded anything other than practice tapes and we probably sucked.

This DEATH FROM ABOVE hails from Brazil and plays straight-up D-Beat, this is their first foray into the world of vinyl and they do not suck. DFA does not stray far, if at all, from the patented D-Beat formula and on this 4 song 7” they even cover DISCHARGE’s ‘War’s No Fairytale’ doing it perfectly.

This three-piece packs quite a punch and the production is immaculate. It’s heavy and warm… and punk as fuck! The packaging is the classic black and white imagery so common to this style of music, but folds out into a mini-poster of sorts. There are no lyrics with the genre and songs like ‘Bloody Streets’ and ‘Game of the Arseholes’ you pretty much know what they are about.

This is total DISCHARGE worship with little of its own identity but it is so well done that the record is actually quite fun and is worthy of its existence! (JoshMosh)

1 THE FURLOUGHS review

THE FURLOUGHS s/t 7”
These guys won me over before I even heard the music just because the
record is pressed on recycled on marble vinyl and sold in 100% recycled
kraft envelopes with hand stenciled artwork. Granted, the design is simple
and is without skulls, cops on fire or dirty patched up punks, it has
heart and shows their passion for their project. Maybe I’m wrong and they
are just cheap, but that’s not my call. Also included in the package is a
b/w sheet with photos of the band (some of whom are from distant countries
while the band is based in California) and lyrics which are very engaging
and maintain positivity even when addressing negative aspects of social
behaviors and awful political situations. It’s very refreshing. It’s so
easy to pull out an arsenal four-letter words and resort to harsh name
calling or paint a very gruesome picture in order to get a point across.
Instead, the words are chosen in a thoughtful manner and even delivered in
melodic way where the vocals are used as another instrument instead of
just growling or barking the vocalist’s opinions. I’m thankful for that
since it would have vastly altered the dynamic of the music which is more
of the rock side of punk in that late 80s early 90s D.C. almost post
hardcore style. The drums are careful to work in precise step with the
bass to provide great rhythm and structure for the songs while allowing
the guitars to playfully, yet powerfully work in tuneful harmony to lift
up the entire experience. I would never have guessed that these guys were
so young. (Jake)

1 REASON FOR HATE s/t 7″ review

REASON FOR HATE s/t 7”

Talk about obscure, I can find anything about these guys anywhere online. From what I know they were a punk rock band out of Seattle that was active in the early 90’s. A search for the individual band members online yielded some interesting results. One of the dudes is Jeremy Enigk…Is this the same Jeremy Enigk that went to form Sunny Day Real Estate?

RFH play early 90’s hardcore that may borrow as much from the DC post-punk scene and bands like SOULSIDE as they are reminiscent of more hard-hitting outfits like ECONCHRIST. The music is dark and heavy and the vocals have heavy reverb on them. The music pushes ahead at mostly mid-tempo with a few bursts of raging hardcore speed and the vocals go from a talk/shout to a sheer rage as the music intensifies. I see in the notes on the back of the record they thank RESIST for a place to stay…Maybe they played with them?

On the back of the sleeve it says it was recorded on a single micro-phone in the basement of a place called the Blues House. I don’t know how they did it, but damn!, it came out really good.

The lyrics are not included as the packaging is minimal but from some of the song titles and what I picked up in a few of the songs they seem to sticking to topics of socio-political topics. They even go as far as to spell it out on the back of the sleeve: “No Tolerance for Racism, Sexism, Xenophobia, or Totalitarianism”. Word. (JoshMosh)

1 BLACK HOLE OF CALCUTTA – AGE OF EXTINCTION LP Review

  • February 28, 2012

BLACK HOLE OF CALCUTTA – AGE OF EXTINCTION LP
The first time I threw this on it was spun at 33rpm leading me to believe
that this was going to be an epic journey through some sludgy funeral
doom. Oops, totally the wrong speed. After adjusting the speed and
checking to make sure nobody else noticed (fine, I was alone) I starting
over and was just as stoked on these folks. The opening riffs are slow and
hypnotic, almost enchanting. Just as you allow yourself to give in to it
everything changes: thunderous drums lead in with a warlike rhythm
launching the band into a ferocious wall of chaos. At times I’m reminded
of the HIATUS s/t 12” due to the drawn out melodies with a very
Scandinavian hardcore base. The melodies are carefully paired with manic
tempo changes in the vein of IRON LUNG or DESPISE YOU. The drummer seems to be the backbone here. Not to take away from anyone else, the string section churns out beautiful chaotic violence almost effortlessly, but
Jesse is just killing it, lending to the intensity of the vocals. I’ve had
the line “why do you lie so much?” stuck in my head for a few days now.
The lyrics are pretty intense and personal with youth being the recurring
theme. I can’t say enough good things about this record and I literally
haven’t taken this of the turntable in a week. It’s no surprise that it’s
so good considering the long list of bands these guys have been active
with: THE MAKAI, ¡MAMMOTH TORTA!, KIDS  WITH  HEADLICE, NO THANKS, SCUM
DOGS, DEAD REGIMENT, THE QUAKERS, FACE DOWN, NO GOODNIX, OEDIPUS AND THE
MOTHER FUCKERS. Yep. (Jake)

0 PETTURIN PALKKA Kaikellaista Harmia 7” – REVIEW

Petturin PalikkaShit howdy do I love me some Scandinavian crust! These folks have it all: raging dual female/male vocals belting out seven bleak anthems of the hopelessness of being human in today’s society from the conditioning we undergo from an early age in public schools to the illegal political prisons and all of the gloominess in between. The buzz-saw guitar and grinding bass accompanied by blistering drum work catapult each bit of dreary political poetry into your eardrums at around 2 minutes or less. At times I’m reminded of DISKONTO and STATE OF FEAR. Each songs drives straight to the point with out distractions like noodley guitar solos or long atmospheric intros or outros (not that there’s anything wrong with that!).  All of the lyrics are presented in Finnish and then in English on top of very grainy b/w photos of war images, nooses, skulls and the like, just in case you forgot that this wasn’t about kittens and rainbows. This was originally released as a cassette with 10 originals and a cover of CONSUME’S The Cycle Continues (limited to 100, but sold out), but was finally pressed to vinyl with just 7 of the original tracks. Not pushing any boundaries, just powerful raging crust. (Jake)

panaceaWhat a truly moving album. Very minimal at times, and very complex at times. This work has a sound that nods towards ANTISCHISMbut has much more complex and diverse sound, not unlike NEUROSIS’ Souls At Zero. This album constantly has a surprise around each bend, but remains consistent conceptually and sonically.
Does anyone remember a band from Germany called ZORN? PANACEA and several other bands as of late remind me of that band, who was way ahead of their time. Drawing from punk, crust and metal, these bands have managed to create thought provoking and emotional masterpieces that could very well be a sound track to a movie. It’s nice to have a change from the overtly political (not that I do not like that kinda stuff) to stuff that reaches into the depths of the human heart and soul that is still intelligent and not selfish or cheesy in concept. … Continue Reading
