Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

0 DISCHARGE Early Demos LP – REVIEW

Discharge

Well, this is not the same DISCHARGE that we all know and love. Technically it’s the same band, but it sounds completely different. As the title states, this LP is their early demo recordings from March – June, 1977. If you’ve never heard this, and someone played it at a party, you would never guess who it is. No, this is not the raging D-beat hardcore that we’re all accustomed to. The punk on this record is so ’77 that it’s almost ridiculous, very much a product of its time. The music is extremely basic, very simple, very primitive, and completely callow. It doesn’t have the political, anti-war out rage either, instead we have songs with titles like; ‘I Don’t Care’, ‘Acne’, ‘I love Dead Babies’, and ‘Sweet Suburban Dreams’. And if the lyrical content wasn’t enough to convince you that this is actually a lost SEX PISTOLS demo, then the vocal style, which sounds strikingly similar to Johnny Rotten, will. There is no list of members who played on these demos, so I have no idea how many of the members went on to be in the later incarnations of DISCHARGE. The whole record screams of the early days of young, snotty, pissed off punks filled with teen angst. I guess if you’re a huge DISCHARGE completist, you should pick this up, or if your really into the raw, primal ’77 punk sound. The record is pressed on pink vinyl, if that helps. CRAFT

This one is for all you black metal fans out there…Although this is not the typical black metal band, or album. If yer into the last three DARKTHRONE albums then you will like this one. This has a similar approach in the sound and concept of albums like F.O.A.D. but lyrically very different.

Now, I am not gonna say that black metal lyrics are all sunshine and roses….they are a black metal band after all, but in my perception there is at least something constructive going on here and there and it’s not completely filled with hatred and disdain for the world around us. Craft on the other hand, has nothing positive to say really, but then again the album is called “Void”. … Continue Reading

0 DESPERAT Suicide Attack EP – REVIEW

Desperat - Suicide Attack

From the frozen wastelands of Sweden comes a powerhorse of a 7”. The much-loved D-beat/rock-n-roll style is in full effect here, not unlike a stripped-down AUKTION. And much like another excellent d-beat band I reviewed in this issue – UNLEARN – this band has risen above the terrible trappings and clichés of this easily-tired rawpunk genre. Just by writing lyrics about a diverse array of topics that are actually relevant, they have blown most of the competition out of the water. Each song on this 7” is about something relevant. The title track talks about suicide bombers around the world, brainwashed by religious leaders to kill themselves and others for their religion.  The next song, Love Song is a song that gives proper respect to those activists and groups who do their part to make a better world (when was the last time you heard a dis-song encouraging support for activists, and even giving hope for a brighter future?). Side B starts with Children Should Play, which goes after those who profit from child labor in sweat shops, which is a topic that seems to have fallen out of favor with the punks lately. Lastly, we have Computer Control, a song about civil liberties and loss of privacy. Let me sum this up – this is a great record. It has everything I look for in one package – simple, yet effective cover art. Great sounding songs – not too raw, but certainly not overproduced by any stretch. Political lyrics and no fucking clichés. Let’s have more of this more often. (Inbred)

Chemical Threat

Six songs of hardcore UK hardcore punk! Its fast, a bit sloppy, lo-fi just the way that hardcore punk is meant to be. This is as straight forward as you can get. No frills just in your face punk. The music is a bit generic for the genre but the songs are enjoyable and played well with plenty of energy, so its easy to overlook this and have some fun. Everything about this band screams DIY making you appreciate the CD even more. Honestly this band reminds me of CONFLICT quite a bit. Never getting into CONFLICT, I did find myself enjoying this CD quite a bit. Maybe I’ll start cheking into CONFLICT a bit more. This is definitely for anybody into UK 82 punk. 0 BURNING SONS Reduced to Equality LP – REVIEW

Burning Sons

BURNING SONS play a mid-paced punk rock with some rock n’ roll feel. The vocals are raspy and screamed and are well paired with the music. Their influences show pretty strongly in their music but they manage to to be influenced without trying to rip off other bands. This album is pretty straight forward with no innovation here but you don’t always have to reinvent the wheel with every album. They do a great job of writing music that is enjoyable to listen to and to pay homage to the bands they grew up listening to. There are seven songs on here making it a quick listen. Despite its shortness for a full length it feels complete and doesn’t leave you unsatisfied. This album is a winner with more ups than downs and is worth giving it a good listen if you like some no frills punk rock. (Travis Assault)

Black cobra

I have seen BLACK COBRA live a few times and did not get em at first……It’s weird how sometimes a band will make a HUGE impression on you live then fall flat with recorded music or vice versa. I never felt like this band really moved me live, not terrible just never really left an impression on me. So… I never bought any of their music. This album however has already caught my attention. There are a lot of innovative elements here, and I love writing about bands that don’t compel me to compare them to other bands……Cause I can honestly not think of any band that sounds like this! And with bands in the “heavy music” realm, that is quite a feat. With an opening track called “Avalanche” its hard to go wrong. Not overly down tuned, this band brings a new brand of heavy to heavy music. Intricate rhythms that fall somewhere between trash, psychedelic rock with an almost tribal ( not like NEUROSIS or a hippie drum circle…just manic patterns similar to a lot of ethnic/tribal music throughout history). … Continue Reading

0 ANTI-SYSTEM Discography 1982-1986 CD – REVIEW

Anti-System

I was totally excited to get this CD in my review pile. Mind you, I already own a copy of it, but this band has been a favorite for a long time, and I’m stoked to get to review it! ANTI-SYSTEM were one of the best punk bands of the 80’s peace punk movement, but it seems like they’ve gone largely unnoticed by a lot of people who should know about them. They were on the harder edged side of the anarcho-punk genre, with a very heavy and crushing sound, and some of the tracks are even pretty metallic. They could be compared musically to bands like ICONS OF FILTH, DIRGE, ANTISECT, and A.O.A., not the melodic, sing-song peace punk of the time, this is angry, pissed off, hardcore political punk, and done fucking right! Like all the great bands of their time, they were passionate about animal rights, (with some members even serving jail time for carrying out animal rights actions) and vehemently against war & government. This Discography has it all, the debut EP, the ‘No Laughing Matter’ LP, ‘A Look at Life’ 12”, as well as their first demo, and all comp tracks. This CD also comes with a thick booklet with great liner notes, tons of old artwork, pictures, and a lot of interviews from back in the day. I’ve seen most of their records being repressed on vinyl lately, but if you want all their music, pick up this CD, I can’t say enough great things about this seminal 80’s anarcho-punk band. 0 ANTISECT Demos / Live 1982 LP – REVIEW

  • February 15, 2012
  • by xbencrewx
  • · Reviews

Antisect demos live 82'What we have here is a must have for all obsessive ANTISECT completist like myself. This record consists of two early demos, and two live sets from ’82, before they recorded the ‘In Darkness’ LP. And although the recording quality on this may leave something to be desired (the demos, in particular, are of very poor sound quality) it is still very much worth having, in order to appreciate the evolution of the band. The songs themselves are much more raw and primal, short and to the point, and very DISCHARGE influenced ( a comparison the band themselves hated, but is undeniable). The live sets featured on the B side are really the best to listen to, as they not only have a better sound and recording quality, but also feel much more representative of the band’s sound. However, the real star of this release is the packaging itself. It has two inserts, filled with tons of live photos, artwork, reviews, interviews, gig flyers, and writings from the band itself, all from the early ‘80’s. It also has an awesome fold out poster. For people like me, who are huge fans of ANTISECT, but aren’t old enough to have been around to see their early days (not to mention living on the wrong continent) this is an excellent look at the bands history. 0 ANTISECT Out From the Void 7” – REVIEW

Antisect Out From The VoidTHANK YOU! Thank you for doing a repress of a record that is not only brilliant in sound, but also vital on a socio/political level. ANTISECT…Goddamn….one of the finest anarcho punk bands to walk this Earth. I feel silly to write a review of this record, because in my mind, we all grew up with this. ANTISECT is a band that comes for the U.K., and has made such a massive impact in the punk community with their music, lyrics and overall ethos that blankets our existence. Their pivotal 1983 L.P. “In darkness there is no choice” put these “black-clad” punks on the map that would set the course for many future groups to follow their lead (pardon the expression). This particular 7” sets in motion what ANTISECT ultimately came to fruition as. The two songs on this record carve out an audible path of metallic, crust punk and the lyric content that will bring a sense of ultimate reality to your world. I appreciate ANTISOCIETY records for recognizing such an important and integral piece of art and music that we owe many thanks too. This can be a tough find, but thanks to ANTISOCIETY records, you now have the chance. An absolute necessity. (Leffer)

0 ALPINIST / MASAKARI split LP – REVIEW

  • February 13, 2012

  • · Reviews

Alpinist / Masakari split LPThese two bands compliment each other perfectly in the way two people who have been together for many years finish each other’s sentences, but not in that obnoxious cutesy way. ALPINIST tears through their side of this split at a frantic pace with dark melodic hardcore that strays from the typical crust sound. The thunderous bass tone really moved me, but it didn’t bury the guitars thanks to precise mixing. Creepy harmonies keep the listener on edge, allowing you to get lost in the feel of it. The lyrics are mostly in German, but most of the songs have a few lines in English followed by a description in English. The senselessness of war is a prevalent theme throughout along with the issue of “first world problems” and hate for Nazis. On side MASAKARI: manic bass lines running in and out of guitars that are not only crushingly heavy, but provide an intense melodic platform for angry poetic lyrics noting the ills of modern society spit like venom by three members of the band. There seem to be hints of HHIG in their sound, which is a plus in my book. Some of the chord progressions are downright eerie and the tempo changes are brilliantly unpredictable. Add to this the beautiful black and grey sketch artwork of wild horses coming under fire by hundreds of arrows. Amazing release. (Jake)
