Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

WILT combine old school metal and crust in a perfect hybrid that very few others have ever achieved. 0 Oiltanker / No Tomorrow split LP review – GUEST REVIEW BY AUNTY SOCIAL

  • September 28, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

A pairing of two East Coast crust bands by means of Profane Existence, this definitely sounded like an exciting release when I first got word of it.  OILTANKER has a pretty killer sound mixing crust and hardcore, while NO TOMORROW is mostly crust-laden D-beat- what more can a crusty ask for?  The two previous releases OILTANKER has are exemplary (the Crusades 7″ and the Shadow of Greed LP) and NO TOMORROW’s demo tape was heavy and epic in its own right.  This was a record designed for success.
The Oiltanker side is a continuation of that crust-core sound-rolling drum beat, equal sounding guitars and bass, and raspy hardcore shouts.  It isn’t innovative or progressive, but it kept my attention for the duration.  All the songs were pretty good- worth streaming / downloading, at least.  If you like heavy crust or have been a fan of OILTANKER before, you won’t be disappointed.  NO TOMORROW’s side is a mix of DISCHARGE, TRAGEDY, and I can even hear a slight AGNOSTIC FRONT influence (Victim in Pain/ Cause for Alarm era).  I do want to like this- I really do.  However, the bass sound is almost overwhelming, and the guitar is hard to hear, given that the band seems to do the “wall of sound” style (that being guitars tuned down, bass amped up, and drums in a mid-tempo sort of beat).  Some like that sound, but I like to hear the guitars as a separate part of the music (to the band’s credit, they do have a couple break-off points where they have a separate guitar track that?s much more distinct).  Also, the mid-tempo beat of this throughout can get dreary after a while.  Not “bad” per se, but I didn’t get overly excited.
Overall, a decent split, with OILTANKER being the better side.  I’d say stream this first, and it’s likely a case of genre music for genre people.  I like the mixing job on the this record, too; props to the audio engineer.

I love this time of year! There is so much food available 50 feet from our front door, making meals convenient, cheaper and tastier. There’s something about knowing how your food was grown every step of the way, from tilling in compost through harvesting. Here’s a chili recipe that came mostly from our garden(marked with an *). Enjoy!

Black Bean Chili

2 cups black beans* boiled

1 TBSP olive oil

1 medium yellow onion*, minced

2 large cloves garlic*, minced

1 medium pepperoncini*, chopped

4 Thai hot peppers*, chopped

1 green bell pepper*, chopped

1 3″x3″ square of tempeh, cut into 1/4″ cubes

1/2 TBSP ground cumin

1 tsp ground corriander

2 tsp ground paprika

1 tsp fresh oregano* chopped

2 tsp dried oregano

20 assorted tomatoes ranging from cherry* to large heirloom*, roughly chopped

1 small yellow squash*, chopped

1/4 cup zucchini*,grated

1 ear of corn*, kernels cut off

sea salt and pepper to taste

Boil the black beans in about 6 cups of water until just tender, 45minutes to an hour depending on your bean. While the beans are cooking, heat up olive oil in a separate large pot. Saute the onion for a few minutes until they start to become tender. Add garlic and saute for another minute. Then stir in hot and green peppers and tempeh, mixing thoroughly. At this point, mix in cumin, coriander and paprika, coating everything. Turn the heat up slightly, stir in tomatoes and cover pot, cooking for about 20 minutes. The beans should be ready a this point. Add beans, yellow squash, zucchini and corn, cover and simmer over low heat  for an hour. Adjust the flavor with salt and pepper and serve. We chose to serve over oat/corn waffles (see photo), but the recipe wasn’t stellar so I’m not including it. A cornmeal waffle would be perfect, so maybe I’ll post one at a later date. In the meantime, try biscuits!

Quick and Simple Biscuits

preheat oven to 350F

2 cups unbleached flour

1 TBSP non aluminum baking soda

1 1/2 tsp sea salt

1/3 cup olive oil

2/3 non-dairy milk

1 tsp lemon juice or apple cider vinegar

Stir together milk, oil and lemon juice or vinegar, set aside to curdle. Sift flour baking powder and salt together, then add curdled mixture to the dry ingredients. Mix into doughy ball and then kneed for a few minutes adding more flour if it’s too sticky. Divide into six equal balls and press flat onto baking tray and bake for 20 minutes.

From New Brunswick, NJ, comes Soft Dov with an all out assault on your senses. Totally fast, loud, wild and to the point on this release with ten tracks in just over eleven minutes! A great d-beat sound on here played with all the intensity you need with an old school feel that makes this stand out from the pack. This makes you want to play it loud and get out the combat boots to thrash around the house and fuck shit up! The production is pretty good, clear for being self released and the playing is tight, no lyrics included in this, but the really cool part is that you can get the digital download for free! I would go look for this on cassette to keep it old school, but go get the free download and play the hell out of this one. (Rick E)

0 APPALACHIAN TERROR UNIT – Black Sands EP

  • July 20, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

For me, APPALACHIAN TERROR UNIT is a band that truly defines what crust should be. Hard and heavy punk, with in your face politics. In an age where the punk scene seems to be defined more by the size of one’s record collection or how perfectly one can clone an obscure overseas hardcore band from 25 years ago, the ATU approach is more than welcome. It seems like forever since I’ve listened to a new record which focuses on environmental and animal concerns, which actually concerns me. In the internet age, has our culture stopped giving a shit about anything? Are the times we’re living in too far gone to even bother doing something as simple as make conscious dietary choices?
Thankfully on this raging new slab of vinyl, ATU has continued on their path of shoving these concerns down our collective throat – we need it. We start off with “Shocked, Shackled and Hanged”, a very potent animal rights song about the horrors of the slaughterhouse. Lyrically, this could be a long, lost CONFLICT tune from way back when they were still relevant. A truly stand out song, for sure. Other topics discussed on this EP include heroin addiction (“Lost in the Darkness”), how fucked up the world is – and how disgusting apathy is in response (“The End of Complacency”), and finally the oil industry – more specifically, the horrific British Petroleum oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico (the title track “Black Sands”). ATU is one of the most important and relevant bands in the punk scene today, and this 7” is among the best material they have recorded to date. It’s my hope that this band will inspire more kids to start thinking about the horrific conditions we face today, and at the very least start putting politics back in punk. 0 MISERY – From Where The Sun Never Shines LP

  • May 8, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

Of course, MISERY needs no introduction, having been prophesizing the end times while blasting our ears for the last 25 years now. 25 years and only three full-lengths. For many bands, after such a huge gap between releases (it’s been 9 years since their somewhat lacklustre splits with TOXIC NARCOTIC and PATH OF DESTRUCTION; 16 years since the now-legendary “Who’s the Fool… The Fool is Silence” LP), the original spark isn’t there anymore, or the band merely splits up. Thankfully, neither of these are the case with MISERY. In fact, it is safe to say that this is the best thing the band has recorded in their entire history, and this seems to be the start of a whole new exciting chapter for the band.

Recorded in their own studio on their own time, this record has been slowly taking shape over the last five years or so. I still remember the day when I was in Minneapolis hanging out and went over to the House of Misery to drink beers and watch the band practice. Before anyone else showed up, Jon played me a couple of tracks they had just recorded a couple days prior – the two earliest tracks recorded for this album. At that point, I knew that this was destined to become a classic record… if it ever came out.

Just in this week, from Rinderherz Records Switzerland , I present CHAMBER!

One record from this batch in particular, by the band CHAMBER I found particularly interesting. Upon receiving the Rinderherz trade list, the Chamber description immediately captivated me. This excellent release is for those who dig the American wave of earthy pagan black metal. While I am more inclined to listen to bands that are of similar nature as opposed to bands that sound almost like WITTR, taken off guard by this one. Having very similar sound, almost eerily so Chamber sounds like a more stripped down version of WITTR – a little more raw and a little less “pretty”. This release also comes in spectacular  gate fold jacket with heavy stock sleeves that are printed with lush and intense images – creepy and haunting yet beautiful photography and lyrics. Also comes with a download card! Highly recommended!

Next up is SHADOW OF THE TORTURER from Memento Mori Records. This is some of the most interesting sludge doom I have heard in quite some time. This is definitely not the typical EYEHATEGOD wanna be boring crap that comes out year after year. What this is  – an innovative take on that style that has a sound like noone else. Hailing from Seattle SHADOW OF THE TORTURER features ex members of HC MINDS and ALDEBERAN ….. so this definietly has that West Coast gloom and doom feel very much akin to YOB and NEUROSIS, but with a touch of  BOLT THROWER (VERY SLOWED DOWN BT THOUGH!). This very slow, CRUNCHY and slightly psychedelic with some of the gnarliest vocal I have ever h Interesting note about this album is there is a nasty cover of BLACK SABBATH’s “Who Are You?” That one would never even recognize from even the most scrutinizing listen!

Also noteworthy that has recently arrived :

SIN LOGICA Riff In Peace 7″

HOMORAITUS – Apocalypse CD

FACEDOWNINSHIT Shit Bloody Shit CD

We have been doing a large amount of trading with DIY labels around the world so keep a sharp eye out in April, when all of the goodies start rollin in!
