Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

0 RAWHIDE – Branded For Life 7″

This four piece band from Sweden have put out four hardcore songs with a pretty good dose of rock mixed in. The four songs are all really well produced with the band not being buried in the mix, but you can hear them come at you with both barrels and hitting you hard. These guys are in the vein of the HELLACOPTERS / MOTORHEAD which is not a bad thing by any means because they carry on the feel of both of them, without being a copy of them. The band really locks into some heaviness and just goes with it, making you move your head and feel it in your feet as you tap furiously along with them. From the vocals to the drums, guitar, and bass, these guys bring a glorious mess of fun on this single. (Rick E.)

This Boston band that first started up way back in 1982 has released some new music after fourteen years and it’s been far too long! We have four awesome songs, with one being a remake of “Legalize Murder” that  they did with GG ALLIN, and every one of them kills, (pun meant). This is some classic and great hardcore with no metal crap, just pure hardcore goodness. These tracks have a timeless sound and the great production helps the grittyness still shine through. This is one of those bands that should have been bigger and now you have your chance to find out about them with this cool single. It comes die-cut into a saw blade which is actually pretty sharp and looks very cool. It’s a  limited edition of 500 with only 150 of them coming on blood-red vinyl (the rest are black) and it’s in a fold-over sleeve with lyrics and info printed on the inside. You can’t go wrong if you want some old school hardcore that is just a cool release. (Rick E.)

0 DOGGY STYLE – Punkers Anthem LP

This band originally from Fullerton, California started way back in 1983 and is back after over twenty years and they haven’t changed or grown up one bit! They still have the same goofy lyrics that are made to piss everyone off, and some great hardcore punk tuneage. You do need to go into this with an open mind and try not to be easily offended because they are a total goof band and sometimes you just need this kind of stuff. I laughed so hard at some of this album, like the punk/ska of “Beat Your Meat” and singing about donuts on “Donut Shop Rock”. I loved their older stuff and now I have something new from them to crank up while I’m driving and listen to it over and over again. They were founded by Daddy X of KOTTONMOUTH KINGS, and the band lives on with original vocalist Ed “Shaggy” Caudill, plus you get  special guest vocal appearances by Jack Grisham of T.S.O.L. and Gordon Cox of The DETOURS on this LP. This is going into my play often pile, you need some goof punk in your life, trust me! (Rick E.)

0 CHRIST ON A CRUTCH – Shit Edge And Other Songs For The Young And Sentimental CD

Shit Edge And Other Songs For The Young And Sentimental

This is a compilation of their rare tracks that appeared on various compilations and EPs, all now long out of print and hard to find. This hardcore punk band also featured bassist Nate Mendel (FOO FIGHTERS/SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE) in it. You get sixteen tracks on this CD, all of which have been cleaned up and sound great, with none of the faults you hear from some other reissues. The band blazes on this compilation, you would never think that it wasn’t a completely recorded album, instead of songs from other releases, it flows that good. They were around in the late 80’s until the early 90’s and put out some great songs, and it’s great to get a bunch on here instead of trying to hunt down the originals. The band has a lot of political and personal lyrics and super tight musicianship and it’s so refreshing to hear a straight up hardcore album without any metal wanking or tough guy attitude on it. This is a great release and they deserve to be heard by a bunch of new fans, and loved by their old ones. (Rick E.)

0 REPLICA – Self-titled Cassette Demo

Demo cover art

This four piece band from Oakland, CA has this five song demo cassette out and it blows past in just over five minutes. It is one of the better demos that I have heard in a long time, with pretty good production, great vocals that are perfect in the mix, with the bands blowing up things behind them. The vocals really are impressive on here, full of passion and rage, but they don’t fall into just shouty noise, they are some of the best in hardcore that I have heard in a long time. I really want to see this band or at least get someone to have them lay down some more tracks because this is one of my favorite bands right now. These three females and one male obliterate weaker bands and I know that if this is just an early demo…watch out! (Rick E.)

0 MAYDAY – Self-titled EP

Mayday EP cover art

This four piece band from Montreal, Quebec has laid down four powerful tracks on this EP. They combine the power of hardcore with the shout along politics of oi! all mixed together on this release. I’m not good at French, honestly I never was, middle school made us take it all three years that we were there, and it’s been far too long since I was in middle school to remember much, but the band only does two of the four songs in French, so I could shout along with the other two in English. All the songs were really good with “You Have My Back” being the one that really stood out for me with the unity message in it. The band is fairly tight, just a bit sloppy in spots, but it’s not supposed to be perfect is it really? This band has pretty good production on this release, almost live sounding, and the singer really is shouting out the lyrics with passion which makes this one a keeper for me. Take a listen and shout some songs out in English and Francais, you’ll have fun! (Rick E.)

0 Common Enemy – As the World Burns CD / Download

This six piece band from Reading, Pennsylvania brings you songs about skateboarding, horror movies, everyday life, and personal politics. They first got together in 1988 under a different name, had some lineup changes and took this name in 2000 and put out their first release, Outsiders”. After more lineup changes and many more releases, we have their new album, “As the World Burns” and it’s a fucking ripper! From the very first song, they never let up with the intensity and aggression on these sixteen tracks. They even have a Christmas song on here, “All I Want For Christmas is a Bag of Weed” which I’m sure that a lot of people will be asking for, but they need to ask for this album too. You might get mellow from the weed, but this album will make you want to get up and thrash around with your skateboard and tear shit up, not sit down and snack up. This band brings you some awesome thrash, hardcore, punk, and skate core all mixed together and totally in your face with a powerhouse punch to get the point, which is get up off your ass and have some fucking fun! These guys have mostly super short songs, but you need that or else you would be wiped out , but that would be ok, then you could enjoy your Christmas present….lol! The production on this is great, clear and crisp, great vocals and the band is tighter than a frog’s ass in a pond. I now have to hunt down their older releases……..so many good bands I’ve been hearing lately…..damn! (Rick E.)

0 RAD ‎– This Is Not A Final War – Cassette Demo

  • November 21, 2012

This cassette is eleven songs of super blazing fast hardcore/thrash from this four piece band from Sacramento, CA. They have a female vocalist, but she doesn’t shriek like a lot seem to do when doing this kind of music, but she makes it work with her aggression on this release. Not one song on here is over forty-five seconds and the shortest are under or around ten seconds long, so you know there is nothing wasted on here in getting the message across. The band just pummels away behind the vocalist and creates a swirling slam fest that zips by so fast that you have to listen again and again to it. The production is average, but it doesn’t really take too much away from this one. I’m hoping to hear more from them in the future and see where they go. (Rick E.)

0 SHUT UP SIDNEY – … And Then the World Raped Itself CD

  • November 20, 2012
  • by harleytexas
  • · Reviews · Uncategorized

This four piece hardcore/punk band from Houston, TX has thirteen tracks on their new release, with a bonus track at the end making for fourteen tracks of DEAD KENNEDYS inspired tunage. The guitars buzz, the drummer thrashes away behind, the bass keeping up nicely and the singer who has a bit of the Jello waver in his voice at times is spitting out a lot of venom during the whole thing. They have some really cool lyrics that you can get off of their Facebook page about how “Pop-Punk Must Die”, on “Perry” the sing the praises of Governor Rick Perry, (they really hate him), they sing about the crap of the wars we’re stuck in on “$9.11”, the song “Monotony” has the SEX PISTOLS song “Problems” feel to the repetition of the way they keep singing “Monotony”, of course the strong anti religious lyrics on here, and a ton of other great songs. This brings me back to the old days of the 80’s when bands would have so much anger and wanted people to think for themselves, I’ve missed this. The production is a bit raw and it took me a second or two to get into it, mostly because a lot is so over produced nowadays, but since this is punk, fuck it, I liked it! I’m glad there are bands out there, especially in tight ass Texas, that want to get in your face and make you think. This one blazes by pretty quick even though there are some longer songs, but they get you caught up in their fury that you lose track of time. On a side note, I have a cat named Sydney and the phrase “SHUT UP SYDNEY” has been said around my house lots of times, so I had to look into these guys, who got their name from the SEX PISTOLS.  This is available from the band and they are looking at putting this out digitally. Definitely pick this one up, go to their Facebook and give them some love, for their hate. (Rick E.)

ICHSUCHT  – Stadtkind which means “Egomania – City child” are a Hamburg, Germany four piece band with a female vocalist who have a pretty tight release out right now. Six hard-hitting punk/hardcore songs with nice clear production, clean vocals that are easy to understand, well, if you understand German that is. They have a nice pissed off feel to the songs, plenty of whoa ohs thrown in, a sing a long style that makes me wish that I was better with my German, nice heavy guitar and bass, and the drummer is smashing away perfectly in the back. These songs go by pretty quick and make me want to hear more, always a good sign. They have a CD that comes included with the vinyl EP which comes on white vinyl, or you can just get the CD, or go download it to hear it and then go buy something from them, a definite keeper and one that I’ll be listening to often.
