Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

    Living a domesticated existence
Starves people of meaning in their lives
Everyone feels the void beneath the surface
    Of everyday activities and routines

    Miserable, exploited, mass populations
Feeding the industrial systems endless hunger
    Treated like machines, living beings
Enslaved and kept passive in a technological noose

    We live in these cages
Made of concrete, glass, and steel
    A functioning human made hell
    Complete with natural scenery

    Yet there is no community
Deprived of connection with real people
    Technology perpetuates alienation
    But promises to connect us

And fill the void in our lives
In constant need of escape and distraction
    From this fucking ugly world
    Technology creeping into our lives

    Pop culture, pacifying shit
    Endless distractions to curb dissent
A society of lonely domesticated beings
Attempting social interaction behind a digital screen

Clinging to the feeling of connectedness
    Personalized profiles, mass communication tools
    Monitored and funded by pigs
    Spying on people, on movements
While corporations profit off government control
    Microsoft, apple, fedbook
    Endless lists of corporations
    Infiltrating our everyday lives
    The NSA, the CSE
Databases created from what you share
    Information for incrimination
Millions of people on terrorist watch lists
Technology’s a weapon used against us

Its function is to propel their ability
To efficiently exploit us and the natural world
While doing so capitalizing off selling us
Gadgets to distract us from the lives we live and hate

Turn off that shit, enter the real world
    You are not connected
You are alone staring into a fucking a screen

Get outside, meet with real people!
Even if we use these tools
    We must never forget

Technology is a system created by and for those in power
And it will only exist with
Division of labor, exploitation, and death

    Becoming connected through technology
    Is a sick fucking joke

0 UP FOR NOTHING: Twelve Stories Down: CD

On their third DIY release, these guys show no signs of slowing down, going emo, or wimping out…so fucking glad! New York Hardcore legend Ernie Parada from TOKEN ENTRY, BLACK TRAIN JACK, and  GREY AREA, lends his voice to UP FOR NOTHING on “All We Need” and “The Slouch”. As expected, this is another great release from these guys, lots of the classic woah-ohs, gang vocals, melody, songs so catchy that if this was a disease, you’d get infected in a second, great production that’s clean, but not neat and tidy, it lets the punk rock stay in control of the music. With twelve songs you would think that there might be a duff song or two, well there isn’t one or two duff songs on here…there’s none, every song could be your next favorite song. So much talent in this band that I just look forward to hearing what will come out next from them. The band is tight, guitar work that rips through the songs, drums that just have energy to spare, bass work that gets the bottom end rocking, and some rough vocals that verge on snotty mixed with some cleaner vocals. This was a great listen, now I have some new songs to learn all of the lyrics to so I can sing along in the car and look crazy through the window to other drivers. (Rick Ecker)

This Australian punk band has been together since 2008 and has put out an album full of hard-hitting anthems with a ton of energy and power. The songs have some great gang vocals, powerful drumming, bass that brings depth, awesome guitar leads that reach out past punk to hard rock at times and the vocals are raw, but have a great sound to them. There’s not a duff song on this release, they have made every one of the songs into an epic of punk with melody and rawness. Lots of catchy songs that veer towards almost hardcore, but not the metal type, more like the feel of hardcore on the songs. The band plays with conviction, has heartfelt lyrics, rips through twelve songs in less than thirty-five minutes and rocks…what more can you ask for? (Rick Ecker)

Holy shit, this is one of the best melodic punk records that I’ve heard in a long time! The band just plays their hearts out on these six songs, such energy and conviction, plus hooks galore on this EP. The first song “Across The Susquehanna” just comes at you from the start to pull you into this collection of songs. The playing is just so passionate that I listened to it at least three times in a row. The production is very good, lots of power and energy and fullness. My favorite song on here is the third song “American Bones” with the awesome guitar throwing out riffs all over, the powerful drumming, the rolling bass, and the gruff vocals that just grabbed me. The hook in this song is just a killer, you get some great background vocals too, I really love this damn song! This is the kind of album that makes me love punk rock and gets me wound up and it makes me crank up the songs really fucking loud and sing along. This is one of those albums that will be permanently on rotation in my collection, you need to have a copy of this one. (Rick Ecker)

Up For Nothing - In Trance

UP FOR NOTHING have been around now for over a decade and just keep putting out great songs and the quality never wanes. You get some nice tight punk rock with some great woah-ohs, bouncing bass, driving drums, great guitar leads and snotty, but strong vocals that all add up to some kick ass punk rock on the first song “This Moment”. The great thing about this EP is that they just don’t stop with the great punk rock on this EP, they just keep the quality going. This was produced by New York Hardcore legend Ernie Parada from TOKEN ENTRY, GREYAREA, and BLACK TRAIN JACK, it was  recorded and mixed by Pete Steinkopf from THE BOUNCING SOULS and mastered by Stephen Egerton from THE DESCENDENTS, so you know that this had better be a good fucking collection of songs, and it sure is. The band is tight, the vocals are top-notch and I really recommend this EP. (Rick Ecker)

Ten tracks of punk rock that has a fair bit of pop in it, but isn’t pop punk. This is the debut album from THE REVELING and they sound like they’ve been doing this for a while with the great performance that they give on this album. This album has a ton of melody and is full of catchy songs that will get you up and jumping around the room to. Lead singer / guitarist Sean Morris has a great voice, not too snotty, he actually sings and gets the emotion of what he is trying to get across to you as well as playing the hell out of his guitar on the album. The band has great chops as well, the drums carry the songs along at a great pace and the bass bounces all over the place making for a fun listen. They really got a great job on the production with everything nicely mixed, but not too polished so you still get the punk rock feel that is important. The songs are all straight forward and rock out pretty damn good on this album, the song “Plaster Saints” had a bit of a WEEZER feel to it, but was still a great song as well. (Rick Ecker)

A great gritty punk rock album from these guys from the province of Quebec in Canada. These guys blast through five punk songs that range in almost hardcore speed, punk rock and almost pop punk, but they are all really good songs. The playing is tight, the vocals are a little gruff, and suit the songs perfectly. They just put out an album at the end of 2012 and they already have some more songs ready to go, I love that, no long waits between releases. These guys really are good, lots of hooks, good lyrics and the songs are not super short, just a good length where they don’t over stay their welcome. (Rick Ecker)

Go rock Yourself cover art

Thirteen really well done punk rock song from the province of Quebec in Canada by JUST BECAUSE on their debut album. This band has some really great songs on this album, catchy, full of hooks, great guitar playing, fast paced drumming, great bass work and a vocalist who brings a lot of energy to his slightly gruff vocals. These guys are keeping up the tradition of great punk bands out of Quebec as well as out of Canada. I really was happy that they play straight forward punk rock, no emo, no real hardcore, just fast punk rock, how I love it! The last song is a cover of Kepi from the GROOVIE GHOULIES, “Full Serve”. This is an acoustic song, but it’s not an acoustic song, it starts out that way, quiet, almost celtic like then they start adding more instruments, then it becomes a great punk song. They have some nice production on here, not too cluttered, but a nice mix that gives everyone room to be heard. I really liked this album, I hope they keep up the good work. (Rick Ecker)

These three ladies sure rock out on this album with their mix of punk, post punk, rock and the ability to blend everything together so skillfully is a great talent. As soon as you hit play, the band grabs you and takes you where they want you to go, just look at the aggression on the cover, don’t fuck with them, they’ll fuck you up! These ten songs are great, they have such good production on here, it really makes the band shine on this album. The guitar is chunky and the leads are a-plenty, the bass is bouncing along in the songs, the drumming has some great fills and bashes away like crazy, but the real winner is the gang vocals on the album. The vocals just make you want to sing along and the band is so damn catchy, you would swear you were getting brainwashed by them, sing, but, come to shows, worship us. There is a lot of diversity on the album, they managed to mix up the songs so you don’t get too much of the same thing all at once. I heard a bit of ELASTICA on a few tracks, but these ladies carry this album on their own, using their influences to guide them, not control them. I can’t wait for more from them. (Rick Ecker)

Formed out of the ashes of  The Peccadilloes from Las Vegas, this three-piece has got a great punk rock album out, that’s right, great punk rock, something that I have a hard time finding any more. With all of the sub genres of punk out there, punk rock has seemed to get buried and watered down so much that I could rarely find a band that played it any more, and here is one band playing it fantastically! I saw the cover, check,  looked at the titles, check, looked at the band pictures, check, read the lyrics, check, then cautiously put the CD in, and it was good! They play fast paced punk rock, with a touch of RANCID thrown in, but they carry it mostly by being their own band. The band trades vocals between all three members, with some nice raw, gravelly vocals from the guys and some strong, energetic female vocals that add so much to this album. You have Jason on Guitar / Vocals, James on Bass / Vocals and Sandy on Drums / Vocals and they just fit perfectly together. The lyrics are great, political and full of thought that was put into them, not just a bunch of rants, but good lyrics showing you how things are, not too good by the sound of it. The album also has some nice production with everyone clear in the mix and not drowned out. I love this album, do yourself a favor and go get some real punk rock, get this album. (Rick Ecker)

It’s like I picked up a cassette from the late 70’s and it had some long-lost band playing CBGB’s back then. Some awesome guitar work that Johnny Thunders would love, nice and raunchy, licks getting thrown out all over the place, the singer could front the New York Dolls, but has a bit more snottiness added to his vocals, and the bass and drums are strong and driving the album forward. The production is perfect, it adds just the right amount of sleaze to the proceedings that I just love the album and had to listen to it all over again. This has to be one of my favorite bands right now, just the right amount of classic punk rock, nothing pretentious or trendy, just some great punk that needs to be played loud. (Rick E.)
