  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

    FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record. 

    “Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind. 

    FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

    While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck.     Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

    Swordwielder – System Overlord 
    Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

    Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

    Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. Coming from the frozen wastelands of Alberta, Canada comes a two-hour set of killer crust, peacepunk, thrash, UK82, squat punk, and assorted other sub-subgenres under the great ANARCHOPUNK umbrella. Doomed Society is hosted by PE columnist/reviewer Damien Inbred. Back in the day, PE used to host this show along with other killer podcasts under the PE Radio banner. When money got way too tight, PE Radio was dropped. Instead of throwing in the towel, Inbred found support from the online metal/punk radio station Brutal Existence. Now Doomed Society appears every Sunday afternoon at 4pm EST.
Since the roots of this show run deep with Profane, I decided to get the word out with help from the PE site. Every week, I’ll post the latest setlist, and a link to where you can download the most recent episode!

This six song EP doesn’t have a bad song on it, it’s a great sample of these three bands from start to finish. I liked the way that they split the bands up so you wouldn’t get two in a row from the same band. This had to be one of the better splits that I’ve heard in a long time, the energy doesn’t lag, the bands play their hearts out and it’s so full of energy that I had to listen to it a few times. You get punk, some poppier punk, a bit of faster, almost hardcore and just a great bunch of songs. There are female vocals on here, which is always nice to see on splits, great playing across the board, with some nice gang vocals, some woah ohs, and the sound of bands having a great time, that’s a nice touch since some bands get so into being serious that it gets boring, but these bands aren’t goofy, just having fun. One of my favorite records right now. (Rick E.)

0 VARIOUS: CANCER IS A PUNK: LP

This sixteen song release is a great compilation and all proceeds go to help fight breast cancer, so you can’t go wrong with it. You get tons of unreleased songs, as well as two cover songs, one is a BEATNIK TERMITES song “You’re All Talk” and the other is a RAMONES song “Rockaway Beach”. Very good production across the board from all the bands and it’s nice to see that these aren’t throwaway songs, but good songs in their own right. You get a ton of different styles on here as well, so that breaks up the album a bit since you won’t get tired of one style over and over again, like some pop punk, punk, a little hardcore and an acoustic song as well. Even if this wasn’t for charity, it would be a compilation to pick up just because it’s that good. A lot of thought went into picking the bands and songs and it shows with the quality of this very important release. Bands included: MIXTAPES, LANDMINES, SORE SUBJECTS, CAFFIENDS, THE FIZZY POPS, BE MY DOPPLEGANGER, FLAMINGO NOSEBLEED, THE DOPAMINES, UP FOR NOTHING, THE BOSTON THIEVES, IT GOES ON, THE PUTZ, LARF, LIPSTICK HOMICIDE, TEENAGE REHAB, DIRECT HIT!

These guys just kick ass! Sixteen fan punk songs that you just want to turn up loud and sing along too. They get a bit fast on here, but not really into hardcore, just fast, fun punk with some fun lyrics. The playing is pretty good, the guitar has some bite, some bouncy bass, straight forward drums and the singer is adding to the whole thing by having a clear, strong voice and he sings with a lot of energy, as well, the whole bands plays with such energy, that you can’t help, but enjoy this CD. The production is pretty good for a demo, so you will be able to hear everything pretty good, but if they got into the studio with a producer that could help them a bit, it would take it just to that next level, which I’m sure that they are more than capable of hitting. I hope that these guys stick around for a while, they are a really good band and you need to go check them out. (Rick E.)

Well goddamn it if this album doesn’t make me want to flip up the bill on my hat, put on a few bandanas and goes nuts counterclockwise. Or maybe just terrorize a neighbor on a skateboard bonelessing off fire hydrants and hitting wallrides on people’s garage doors! This just kicks so much ass and takes me back to the mid 80s thrash scene with bands like DRI and EXODUS (even a bit of Steve Harris style bass thrown in)and CLUSTERFUX can thrash with the best of them, but having the advantage of much better lyrics. Political punks have a way of making every music genre better. So, this killer piece of grey marble wax starts with a beautiful clean intro, then thrashes nonstop for six more songs, including one by Colorado band END OF STORY. Each song has a back story of the meaning behind the lyrics, including punk bands that ask enormous guarantees to play, more or less taking advantage of the scene, the United States coming off like they are the center of the universe and citizens staying drunk and oblivious while the government fucks us even harder. Those are my words, Josh has a better way of phrasing things. The recording is a bit dirty which adds to the fast and loose thrashy mayhem and every song is a banger. Too bad the bands has decided to pack it up after 16 years. At least they will live on on our turn tables. Cheers folks! Great stuff! (Jake)

1 BOMB BLAST MEN – Who is the Master Here? 7″

I don’t know that I’ve ever been disappointed by anything from Vex Records that has hit my mailbox. Who ever chooses the bands to release over there has a great ear for good bands. This is no different…and is on blood red vinyl! As far as the rest of the visuals, everything is black and write and minimal. There’s a lovely photo of these handsome lads on the inside cover and a photo catalog from Vex opposite that. No lyrics, but there’s a track listing on the back. So, how do they sound? If I didn’t know better, Id say they were straight out of mid 90s Minneapolis. At times I feel like I’m listening to a mashup of MISERY and ASSRASH. Each song is pissed off and powerful, but still holds on to enough fun to stop you from breaking everything and just get drunk as shit on cheap beer (locally sourced of course. keep that money in your community!). This beautiful drunken audio nightmare finishes up with a NOMEANSNO cover – Dad. Not familiar with the original, but everything I’ve heard from them is killer. So, if you want to annoy the neighbors or just have another awesome slab o’ wax to put on at your next painted jacket, charged hair filthy piss-up, you need this! (Jake)

The a-side has SICK/TIRED playing one long hardcore song with some sludge and a ton of grind in it that has a sample of a newscaster laughing at a tragedy about an accident at the end. Their song is over five minutes long and if you like grind, then you’ve found your band. This is their third release and they are a pretty good band, definitely one to check out. OXBAKER are more hardcore / thrash and were the winners for me on this one. They do four really fast songs that made me want to hear more of their stuff. Good production all around on this single, and definitely a purchase worth looking for. (Rick E.)

This four piece band from Toronto, ON has put out their debut vinyl release with four blistering metallic hardcore songs with a bunch of crust and d-beat thrown in. The singer, if you can call him that since he’s screaming and yelling his throat out on this, is mixed fairly well, the drums are pretty high in the mix which is pretty cool, it makes it a bigger presence and just pounds away throughout. These guys sound like they are trying to win a race the way that they tear through these four songs. If you’re a fan of this stuff, these guys will fit the bill nicely. I was impressed, they really did a good job on this and I’m interested in what comes next. (Rick E.)

This band from Montreal started way back in the early 80’s, broke up and now are back with two original members and two guys from the band INEPSY. Thirteen hardcore tracks with a bonus of the three songs they released on their only original release. They re-do those three songs and just rip the doors off with the ferocity that they tackle them. The songs from their original single have been added from the original vinyl, so you hear the needle drop and the crackles from the vinyl, if only it was cleaned up, but better than not hearing them at all. The band has that UK82 sound with some crunchy metallic licks thrown in. I would never had thought that these were guys from back in the old days, they have more bite than a lot of kids nowadays. The production on the new songs is great, nice and crisp, the old songs, well we talked about that already. This is a definitely cool album that will make you want to throw away those imposters to good hardcore. (Rick E.)

0 D.O.N.D.O.N.: Last Warning: CD

This is a reissue of this Japanese band from 1991 and originally only 200 copies of the LP were made. You get the entire original album, plus four tracks for comps put out back then for a total of fifteen raging tracks. What does D.O.N.D.O.N. stand for you ask? Detestation of Negative Destruction of Nuclear. This band never gets mentioned like a lot of other bands from Japan are and hopefully this will change it and get people into them. I was in Japan for a month and went to tons of record stores and punk shops and never heard of them or saw anything about them, so they really are a lost treasure. They play super hard and fast hardcore with a fair bit of metal in their songs, but that was popular back then, especially in Japan and they rage on all of the tracks! Super fast drumming with it almost losing control, only to be brought back under control, the guitar just thrashing away, the bassist pounding and the singer just furiously singing. These guys are going to be played on nice days to piss of the neighbors, it’s that fucking good. I’m glad that people are digging up long forgotten classics like this. (Rick Ecker)
