Originally pressed in 1996 PROFANE EXISTENCE is bringing this quintessential anarcho punk masterpiece back in circulation.
In 1996 AUS-ROTTEN released their first LP “The System Works For Them” on an unsuspecting punk scene. It spread like wildfire in a pre internet era within a genre that mostly depended on tape trading. (at least is was pre internet for us penniless punks) “The System Works For Them” was the perfect mix of anger and intelligence that the scene needed at the time (and still does today). It was like a wake up call that opened the eyes and ears to many punks the world over. The messages where crystal clear and most us were hooked as soon as the beginning shouts of “Boycott” bellowed over the speakers. I don’t believe any of us ever expected their message to resonate so well within the scene, but even more surprising is how the songs are just as relevant today as on they the day they were written. Which is why PROFANE EXISTENCE has decided to repress this record. We feel that that messages that AUS-ROTTEN brought to the table are to powerful to ignore. We feel that this LP is important and therefore should be highly available and priced affordably.
PROFANE EXISTENCE has worked out every last detail of this release with the members of AUS-ROTTEN whom have been involved from step one. All tracks have been re-masted by Jay Matherson at the Jamroom studios. To be 100% honest we didn’t want to do a complete re-master of what we already considered a good recording. However when we opened the tracks on protools we noticed a few balance issues that required fixing. These fixes resulted in a tremendous upgrade to the overall quality of the tracks. We painstakingly scanned, puzzled, and photoshopped the original artwork to make sure that it was as close to authentic as it could possible be. We then went for broke by pressing in three different vinyl color combinations! Overall to say that we are pumped to release this would be an understatement, we are absolutely ecstatic to bring you this LP on PROFANE EXISTENCE!
To top this all off we worked with AUS-ROTTEN vocalist Dave Trenga on redrawing the classic “What Good Is Money, When There Is No One Left To Buy” design for a T-Shirt to concede with the albums release. This is a fresh take on an old image to create a new and original design.

Silence are a highly active post-punk/peace-punk band from Pittsburgh, PA. “The Deafening Sound of Absolutely Nothing” strives (and succeeds) to achieve the perfect balance between peace and post punk. By taking influences from The Mob, Bauhaus, Zounds, Killing Joke, Amebix, Crass, Conflict, Internal Autonomy and Joy Division SILENCE have created what can only be described a brilliant debut LP. At one moment this record is dark, heavy, and atmospheric and then the next moment it makes you want to dance and sing along. Lyrically SILENCE are much closer to the anarcho side of the previously listed influences. Lyrics focus on a variety of topics but often have a strong focus on the way punk and activist communities deal with political struggle in our current political climate.

They’re beating on the drums again, they’re fueling up the planes. The congressmen fall into line and sing the old refrain. In the name of peace they’ll burn the land and drop a thousand bombs.
Meanwhile we’ll just stay at home and go back to our sitcoms. It’s the same old song, we’ve heard it before. They’re beating the drums and they’re calling for war. What it’s supposed to accomplish, no one is sure But the victims are always the hungry and the poor.
Once the drums of war begin it’s hard to make them stop. The noise silences the dissidents once the bombs begin to drop. All those who call for peace will be mocked and pushed aside. In 10 years they’ll admit we were right after many thousands more have died.
Finally after many delays from the pressing plant the WARWOUND Demo’s LP “A Huge Black Cloud” is out and copies are moving fast!
Recorded in 1983, this record contains 15 songs from 3 sessions. With a few different takes you get a total of 25 blistering tracks. For those unfamiliar with WARWOUND, they are a UK band formed in 82. WARWOUND recorded 3 demos in 83 before disbanding and members went on to join THE VARUKERS and form SACRILEGE. These demos never received an official release… until now! Highly influenced by DISCHARGE, WARWOUND is one of the first bands ever to take D-Beat Punk to a raw and intense level. Recently reformed in 2015, original guitarist Damian is now joined by Ian Glasper on bass and Rat Varuker on vocals. After a few gigs in the UK word is spreading fast of the relentless onslaught of a live show these veterans put on. WARWOUND have also recently hit the studio to record for the first time in over 30 years. Needless to say WARWOUND is back with a vengeance!
What we have here is a must have for all obsessive ANTISECT completist like myself. This record consists of two early demos, and two live sets from ’82, before they recorded the ‘In Darkness’ LP. And although the recording quality on this may leave something to be desired (the demos, in particular, are of very poor sound quality) it is still very much worth having, in order to appreciate the evolution of the band. The songs themselves are much more raw and primal, short and to the point, and very DISCHARGE influenced ( a comparison the band themselves hated, but is undeniable). The live sets featured on the B side are really the best to listen to, as they not only have a better sound and recording quality, but also feel much more representative of the band’s sound. However, the real star of this release is the packaging itself. It has two inserts, filled with tons of live photos, artwork, reviews, interviews, gig flyers, and writings from the band itself, all from the early ‘80’s. It also has an awesome fold out poster. For people like me, who are huge fans of ANTISECT, but aren’t old enough to have been around to see their early days (not to mention living on the wrong continent) this is an excellent look at the bands history. After more than two decades of having PE’s annual birthday bash during the Minnesota Winter, we’ve decided it would be a nice change to move it somewhere warmer and while school’s out! This year we’re going to have our soiree in the Bay Area on June 22nd.
We are currently living in some very interesting times. And this time, I’m not even talking about industrial civilization speeding up our planet’s death (although one of the truck drivers I deal with at work predicted the Rapture for two days from now…guess we’ll see if this issue of PE even comes out, then!).
No, this time I’m talking about the largest mass anti-capitalist movement in modern history. That’s right, the spark that was the Occupy Wall Street Movement has ignited a fire across America, into Canada, and across most of the world. “We are the 99%” is the official slogan of this movement, which is absolutely inspiring. Finally even the most apathetic and apolitical are cluing in that politicians and business leaders are corrupt as hell, and don’t give two shits about the majority of the populace when there’s money to be made. I harbor no delusions that this movement will actually lead to a revolution akin to the Arab Spring uprisings. However, this is a crucial first step in getting the masses on the same page.
Hi. My name is Ben Crew. I will be coordinating all the new record related projects here at Profane. Some of you know me but I’m guessing most of you don’t. If you know me, skip to the next paragraph. For those of you who don’t, you are better off. I won’t waste your time with trivial information about myself. I’d rather take this opportunity to tell you about the new projects we’ve got cooking at PE.
Let me start by thanking you for your patience. The APPALACHIAN TERROR UNIT – Black Sands 7” was due to hit the streets a long f*n time ago. Seriously… this rager of a record was supposed to be old news by now. However, we hit a couple snags in production. First off, someone at the pressing plant listened to the test press before sending it out. Normally this wouldn’t be a problem. It’s a great 7”. If I worked at the pressing plant I’d want to be the first to hear it too. The problem was that they recognized a sample from the radio show Democracy Now. It’s not like it was easy to spot. ATU, being the creative artists that they are, blended the sample into the song using a variety of effects (distortion, reverb etc.). I would argue that ATU was just creating an artistic audio sculpture using “found objects” but the legal department at the pressing plant did not see it that way. Rather than trying to fight them on our moral and artistic high ground, we figured it would be easier to contact Democracy Now to get permission to use the audio. This proved to be a long and fruitless endeavor. In fact Chris, from ATU, took it upon himself to contact Democracy Now. It took a couple weeks of constant calling and e-mails before he got a response. After getting bounced around several times he finally talked to someone who said they would license the sample. Ok… great… we agreed to license the sample. Democracy Now is a good show, and we are happy to work with them. So we jump through the hoops they ask us to jump through… and don’t hear anything back. Chris kept on them for about a month or two. Finally he gets through to someone who says the person who agreed to license that sample no longer works there. After a few more phone calls and e-mailing back and forth we finally got the hint that they weren’t going to cooperate. So we took the path of slightly less resistance… get the song re-mastered without the sample. Problem solved. This record will finally come out. It won’t have the sample but it’s a solid ATU record. People need to hear it. So it gets re-mastered and we get the test pressings no problem. People at the pressing plant are happy. Yeah… Success right? Wrong! We listened to the test pressing and noticed the songs got mixed up. Track one is the same on both sides. One of the tracks got left off… so we started over once again. Third time is a charm right?? It better be! The good news is this record is well worth the wait. ATU are one of the best bands out there writing thrashy/metallic/anarcho/crust with duel male/female vocals. This 7” is a testament to that and the artwork is killer! I for one am stoked this record will out soon!

So, a few moons ago I spent an evening in the delightful company of my good friends, Shafe and Katie. It’d been a while since I saw Katie so catching up on new events and reminiscing about old times became the highlight of our evening. However, if you know people like my friends Katie and Shafe, then you know that your pleasant evening will eventually be riddled with random freaks and unforeseen happenstances. Being chased down an alley by a crazy homeless lady demanding that her palm be read is just the kind of night I would expect, and hope for, when in Shafe and Katie’s company.
While enjoying a drink with them at a local Eugene whiskey bar/Japanese restaurant called Izakaya Meiji Company, Katie recalled a time when we were roommates. I had just returned home from a HAPPY BASTARDS’ tour and, according to her, I had many interesting stories to tell. Katie mimicked me, adding more of a drunken sailor gruff to my voice, So, I turned to face him and I squinted at him with my one good eye!” Katie then broke character, turning into a fit of laughter. Me on the other hand, I was surprised. I had no clear recollection of this.
THANK YOU! Thank you for doing a repress of a record that is not only brilliant in sound, but also vital on a socio/political level. ANTISECT…Goddamn….one of the finest anarcho punk bands to walk this Earth. I feel silly to write a review of this record, because in my mind, we all grew up with this. ANTISECT is a band that comes for the U.K., and has made such a massive impact in the punk community with their music, lyrics and overall ethos that blankets our existence. Their pivotal 1983 L.P. “In darkness there is no choice” put these “black-clad” punks on the map that would set the course for many future groups to follow their lead (pardon the expression). This particular 7” sets in motion what ANTISECT ultimately came to fruition as. The two songs on this record carve out an audible path of metallic, crust punk and the lyric content that will bring a sense of ultimate reality to your world. I appreciate ANTISOCIETY records for recognizing such an important and integral piece of art and music that we owe many thanks too. This can be a tough find, but thanks to ANTISOCIETY records, you now have the chance. An absolute necessity. (Leffer)
These two bands compliment each other perfectly in the way two people who have been together for many years finish each other’s sentences, but not in that obnoxious cutesy way. ALPINIST tears through their side of this split at a frantic pace with dark melodic hardcore that strays from the typical crust sound. The thunderous bass tone really moved me, but it didn’t bury the guitars thanks to precise mixing. Creepy harmonies keep the listener on edge, allowing you to get lost in the feel of it. The lyrics are mostly in German, but most of the songs have a few lines in English followed by a description in English. The senselessness of war is a prevalent theme throughout along with the issue of “first world problems” and hate for Nazis. On side MASAKARI: manic bass lines running in and out of guitars that are not only crushingly heavy, but provide an intense melodic platform for angry poetic lyrics noting the ills of modern society spit like venom by three members of the band. There seem to be hints of HHIG in their sound, which is a plus in my book. Some of the chord progressions are downright eerie and the tempo changes are brilliantly unpredictable. Add to this the beautiful black and grey sketch artwork of wild horses coming under fire by hundreds of arrows. Amazing release. (Jake)
