NAME OF BAND:
BAD LUCK BLACKOUTS
LOCATION:
Eugene, Oregon
BAND MEMBERS:
Kyra Van Winkle – Bass/Vocals
Aaron Carlson – Guitar
Johnny Kraft – Drums
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE BAND NAME?
Kyra: Well, Aaron came up with the name. Honestly, we probably changed our band name once a week for a few months before we decided that was the best.
Aaron: We talked about having a name with a bad luck theme, and I just thought those words sounded good together.
Johnny: Yeah, we just picked something that sounded good; really that is how we came up with it. We had a list of names and chose what sounded best and fit us and what we are about.
WHAT ARE THE MAIN IDEAS BEHIND THE BAND?
Johnny: Having fun, enjoying high energy shows, music, friends, drinking, escape.
Kyra: I don’t know if there are any main ideas, maybe social or political issues, stories, depressing stuff, and being true to yourself…we just like playing music and putting on good shows. When I write lyrics, I write about all kinds of subjects but always try to leave things broad, open ended, and general with some metaphors so listeners can take what they want from the songs and have it speak to them however they want.
WHAT DO YOU FEEL SETS YOUR BAND APART FROM OTHERS?
Johnny: Nothing, nothing at all.
Kyra: Yeah, we just love what we’re doing and work hard, but I’m sure we don’t work any harder than the next band.
Aaron: …Johnny has two prosthetic legs.
FUTURE PLANS?
Kyra: Getting our music out there and touring again soon with a new album.
Johnny: Tour, album, and update our press pack.
Aaron: I’d like to play in Chicago and New York soon, maybe Austin.
IF YOUR BAND COULD HAVE A SUPER-HUMAN POWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
Kyra: Probably having an invincible liver… [laughs] “invinci-liver!”
Aaron: Immunity to stupid interview questions. {Interjection of interviewer, Anti-Christy, post interview: Aaron, this reply makes you sound cocky. If you don’t like the questions, don’t answer them. Because Kyra’s been so nice to communicate with, I decided not to pull this Spotlight completely. But, you should get your ego in check, guitar player.}
WHAT IS THE MOST MEMORABLE, LIVE-GIG PERFORMANCE? WHY?
Aaron: When i saw the band Kansas play in like 1995. Their keyboard player did a lot of hand stands.
Kyra: For one of our shows, I would probably say Wandering Goat in Eugene earlier this year. We love all ages shows and these kids were amazing, singing along, and moshing all over the place.
Johnny: One of my favorites was The Crypt, in Portland, because it was a house party with a lot of people. [laughs] Maybe Longview…’cause of Aaron.
HAVE YOU PLAYED ANY BENEFIT SHOW? IF SO, WHAT CAUSE DID YOU SUPPORT?
Kyra: Not yet, but we are definitely interested in setting some up in the future.
WHAT BAND(S) HAVE YOU MOST ENJOYED PLAYING WITH, AND WHY?
Aaron: Security in Numbers, Pirate Radio, and the Wobblies. They’re all nice guys and fun to play with.
Johnny: The Wobblies because they’re fucking awesome. Really great guys and straight forward, true to the ideals. Pirate Radio.
Kyra: That’s tough for me, because I’ve really enjoyed all the bands we play with. I’m huge on performing high energetic, interactive shows; and it’s nice to see so many talented bands out there putting on great shows.
WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE DREAM GIG?
Aaron: The grand opening of the real Jurassic Park, or on the moon.
Johnny: Opening for Bad Religion, playing in front of a huge crowd.
Kyra: Probably playing with NOFX, Bad Religion, or any of my favorite bands that frequent Warped Tour.
