Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

0 PE Special #15: Favela Rising Collection (plus extras)

  • September 25, 2012
  • by xbencrewx
  • · PE Records

FAVELA RISING is a Brazilian fronted d-beat band that sings in Portuguese and is based out of Minneapolis, MN. The have a very old school sound, a message of political unrest and have been playing basements in the local underground scene on and off for the past 5 years. Their first ever recorded track appeared on the Profane Existence WELCOME TO MINNEAPOLIS 7″ compilation. After it’s release their singer, Marcio, decided to bring the band back into the studio to record for a split 7″ with a band from Brazil called DEATH FROM ABOVE. Marcio decided he wanted to start up his own d.i.y. label, Lixo Social Records, and release the record himself… So after months of saving, toils and tribulations, networking, and figuring out just how and where to get everything done the FAVELA RISING / DEATH FROM ABOVE split is now out! In celebration of it’s release we are putting together a special that includes both their releases plus some extras.

PE Special #15 includes:

– FAVELA RISING/DEATH FROM ABOVE 7″

– WELCOME TO MINNEAPOLIS 7″ (featuring Favela Rising)

– Extra Welcome To Minneapolis Poster (for your wall!)

– Favela Rising “D-Beat Maniac” Patch (hand screened by Gary from MISERY)

0 PE Special #14: SMD / CYP split (plus Mystery 7″)

  • September 25, 2012

  • · PE Records

SMD/CYP split 7″. This is a band new split 7″ featuring two brutal bands. One is from a large West Coast city known around the world and the other is from a small town in Wisconsin but parties like they rule the word.

SMD (LA) has been around as long as I can remember. I believe someone told me they’ve been around 20+ years but don’t quote me on that. All I know is that when we played with them last summer they blew me away. For those who don’t know SMD play brutal as fuck grind/crustcore and don’t know the meaning of the phrase “play slower”.

CYP is from Appleton, Wisconsin and have been doing basement shows for years. Memebers have lived in punk houses and are very active hosting bands on tour and keeping the scene alive. They have several other releases under their belt including several 7″s, a full length LP, and a split with In Defence. They recently got back from a tour of Europe. They are one of the most “under the radar” bands of the mid-west.

We got 10 of these splits and that’s it. Each order comes with an extra mystery 7″!!!

1 Pissed Off! A true story of how even the best law can be obscene

  • September 23, 2012
  • by Comrade Black
  • · Columns · News
Every animal on earth has to pee sometime. Urination is perhaps the most natural thing we still do, thus why it is often referred to as nature calling. For most of human history, we like all other animals have been peeing outside, and in many parts of the world the majority of people still do. And even in industrialized countries where indoor plumbing has been the norm for about a hundred years, I think one would be hard pressed to find anyone who has never urinated outdoors. In contrast, the imposition of laws to govern human behavior is anything but natural. No other species of animal have written and codified laws, nor prisons to punish offenders. But laws are now a major part of our current way of living, so much so that many human animals can not even imagine a society without them. The imposition of laws upon us is rationalized as being for our own protection. In some cases Laws clearly have nothing to do with our safety and far more to do with protecting those who exploit people or other animals for profit, yet still there does exist those few laws that are hard to disagree with without looking like a psychopath. Hate crimes legislation for example, or laws that seek to punish sex offenders. Yet as Joel Schwabe found out recently even these laws can be used to criminalize and repress people who have really done piss all wrong.

-Interview with Joel Schwabe, interviewed by Comrade Black

CB:  Can you elaborate on what happened that lead up to you being charged?

JS:  I was stuck near the Snowqaulmie pass on I-90 heading east. It was Memorial Day long weekend, and traffic was packed. There was a line of cars that must have been 3-5 miles long. The combination of the long weekend, the festival goers, and a bout of highway construction resulted in traffic slowing to a crawl, and stopping completely for long periods of time. About half an hour after I had crawled past the last exit, I realized I needed to urinate soon. I was looking left and right for appropriate places to go, and noticed that some people were pulled over on the left hand shoulder, and peeing on the barrier. I’m a shy pisser, so I was looking for something a bit more discrete.  An hour later, and not much further down the road, I found a double wide shoulder on the right, near an on ramp, and pulled over to take a leak on the barrier, my body “hidden” between my car and facing away from traffic, onto a barrier. Granted, I could see a few cars on the desolate road leading to the on ramp, but the barrier was waist height, and I was as quick as possible. The moment I get back into the car, I see a police officer right behind me in the mirror. He comes up and says “Does this look like a restroom to you?” to which I manage, “Um….no…sorry, but-” and he cuts in with “Do you think these people here enjoy looking at your wiener? I’m writing you up for indecent exposure.” This is almost word for word what he said. And then he headed back to his car to write me up.

Date Bars

Date BarsI wasn’t planning on using this recipe, but at the last minute it seemed like a good idea. Last week I did a 100 mile bike ride as part of a fundraiser for a local AIDS awareness organization and figured that I might want something a little healthier than the free bits that are available at the different rest stops. These date bars worked really well and have lots of nutrition dense ingredients, which might be why I  finished the 100 miles in just six hours.

  • 3 Cups pitted dates (I used deglet since they are a bit cheaper)
  • 2 TBSP water
  • 1 TBSP coconut oil
  • 1/2 tsp spirulina
  • 1 TBSP ground flax seeds
  • 3 TBSP chia seeds
  • 2 CUPS buckwheat groats
  • 1/4 Cup hemp seeds (I used toasted, but would have preferred raw)
  • 1/4 CUP cacao nibs
  • 1/4 CUP dried goji berries

Put the dates in a food processor and chop for about 15 seconds and then pour in water and coconut oil until it becomes a paste. Then add the spirulina, ground flax seeds and chia seeds and process until well mixed. Use a rubber spatula to scrape the sides of the mixer. Add everything else and pulse the mixture together. If it’s too thick to blend, add a little more water. Scrape mixture into a bowl and finish mixing with a wooden spoon(or your hands). Press this into a glass loaf pan(or whatever shape you like) and refrigerate for at least an hour. At this point it should be ready to slice and enjoy.

2 Grand Jury Update

  • September 15, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · News · PE Web Zine

Around 3:00 PM (Thursday 9/13), Matt was taken to a contempt of court hearing. The judge decided to make the hearing private instead of public. It is our understanding that this action is unprecedented since the McCarthy Era of political witch hunts.

The entire 2nd floor of the Federal Court House in Seattle where the grand jury itself was taking place was closed off to the public as well as the 13th floor where the contempt hearings were taking place. As of this writing, Leah has not been taken to her contempt hearing yet.

As of 4:00 PM, Matt is now in federal custody. He has another hearing scheduled on Wednesday, September 26th. We do not know where is being taken yet, but supporters are still at the court house to support him.
As of 4:30 PM, Leah was released and re-subpoenaed. She does not know the date of her next subpoena.
We are asking for supporters to call Judge Richard Jones in his chambers at 206-370-8870 and demand that Matt not be charged with contempt and be released.

WRITE MATT!

Writing to prisoners is an easy and important way to help ease the isolation of imprisonment. Please write letters to Matt!

Make sure that your name and return address, as well as Matt’s full name and inmate number, are included on the envelope and all pages of the letter. There is no limit on how many letters Matt is allowed to have in his cell at any one time. He is allowed to have up to 20 photographs in his cell at once, so send him pictures too! 6 Drawing (A) Militant Resistance: Interview with Indigenous artist and author Gord Hill

 Interview by Comrade Black

Gord Hill is probably one of the most sought after speakers, writers and artists in regards to anarchism, militancy and Indigenous sovereignty in our area. His style is unique, drawing on his own cultural traditions and combining them with radical militant analysis of capitalism, colonialism, civilization and the state, presented in a format we would understand as a comic book. I have for years admired and been influenced by the work of Gord Hill, and on a few occasions have been lucky enough to organize events that he has taken part in.

Gord is a member of the Kwakwaka’wakw nation on the Northwest Coast.
I am very greatful that he accepted my request for an interview about his work and his latest comic book.

PE: I remember you saying once that your first comic was meant in part to help Indigenous people teach their children about their history. Who did you intend to reach with this new book?

It’s pretty broad, any one who is anti-capitalist, or who thinks the system is oppressive and unjust, who question the values and ways of life of capitalist society.  It’s meant for militants who may have participated in militant actions as well as those who question the validity of such tactics.

1 HEYOKA Etat des Lieux! LP

  • September 14, 2012
  • by backwoodsvegan
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

First things first: everything on this album is in French and, though I took quite a few years of it in school, I’m not fluent enough that I could do a proper translation of this release. So, that being said, visual this is a very stunning LP. It’s red on cream color in a style(not sure if there is a name for it)that has been popular at times in protest movements. That’s just the cover and inner sleeve, though. The vinyl is black. If you read and or speak French, you’ll be happy to know that the lyrics are printed inside. The recording is beautifully clean and balanced with the bass tone standing out. It’s crisp and punchy and not buried the way it tends to be. Musically they play very energetic melodic punk that fans of RISE AGAINST would really appreciate and remind me very much of old AFI (early 90s). The writing is creative and powerful utilizing group vocals throughout. This style has been done before, but in no way does this sound stale or overdone. It’s definitely motivating music that makes you want to run out and get things done, screaming the lyrics (if you speak French) all the way. I’m totally into this. If somebody has lyrical translations, please send them my way. (Jake)

0 RANTIPOLE zine 20ppgs

1/2 size / 20 pages / £3

This is issue #3 of RANTIPOLE zine from the UK accompanied by a cassette compilation (limited to 100) featuring ENDLESS GRINNING SKULLS, GREED FORCE and BRUTAL REGIME to name a few. The quality of the paper this is printed is really nice. It’s thick and shiny and doesn’t seem like it will bleed all over your fingers. We’ll see. At roughly 20 pages, this is a fairly quick read and left me wanting more, as I really enjoyed the writer’s brutally honest style. The ‘zine starts out with a few album reviews, then goes into a trivia page about Nicolas Cage(weird) then has a few band interviews, including: ENDLESS GRINNING SKULLS, JAKAL and BRUTAL REGIME. My favorite section was the recount of Brighton Punx Picnic and ScumFest. There’s even a handy guide on beating bar prices by strategically stuffing beer cans in your clothing. The whole thing is black and white in the cut and paste style with lots of photos and drawings. All this could be yours for £3. (Jake)
