Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

Fuck Your Mustache! Fuck Movember! – by Comrade Black

Movember- the time of the year, where men try to show they have testicles by growing an ugly flap of hair over their top lip. On top of looking like a greasy douchebag-hipster, pedophile, and/or cop –  you are helping to raise funds for a multi-billion dollar black hole of an industry that is notorious for cruel animal testing.

Straight up, it pisses me off to have to watch every year as well intentioned people help pave the golden road to the hell that is vivisection. The fact that these people are raising funds for a cause shows me they are probably not psychopaths, they are clearly able to have empathy for others. Now if we are to give the benefit of the doubt to these folks that the majority are unaware that the cancer industry is a cancer, that the money they raise will help torture animals for so called ‘science’, than perhaps we need to do more work in the direction of making those connections more explicit, and showing what is wrong with animals testing.

If people truly are concerned with stopping cancer, we should be encouraging people to make healthier lifestyle choices such as; quitting smoking, cutting meat, dairy, and processed foods out of their diet, as well as avoiding pharmasuiticals as much as possible (At least 50 drugs on the market cause cancer in lab animals. They are allowed because it is admitted that animal tests are not relevant.¹), and being more active. As well as working to stop the industrial pollutants and other known cancer causing agents from being produced in the first place. Fighting against industries like the Tar Sands, cell phone towers, or Monsanto’s monocropped franken-foods, is fighting against the spread of cancer (in more ways than one). Stopping corporations from dumping chemicals in our water supply, foods, and soil would do more towards stopping tumors than growing a fucking mustache. Of course that would involve actually doing work, organizing, and taking risks. Growing hair under your lips is far easier, and trendier.

Perhaps in response what those of us who care about animals could do is make this the month we dedicate to anti-vivisection work. Turn Movember into No-Vember, as in No to Vivisection! Increase our presence in the community; set up info-tables on the streets, at malls, universities, airports, or wherever. Organize demonstrations, including home demos, table at more events with explicitly anti-vivisection information, set up film screenings of Maximum Tolerated Dose², organize anti-vivisection teach ins or workshops, hand out leaflets, put up posters, graffiti, drop banners, make art, or whatever it is that you do to raise awareness. Or organize a fundraiser for anti-vivisection groups in your community. And of course for those able bodied warriors willing to truly risk their privilege there is the actions that make the most direct impact to the lives of lab animals, physically freeing them from cages under the cover of night.

There is so much more we can do than growing a patch of fucking hair.

1 BARREN WOMB – On the Origin of Fæces 10″ep

BARREN WOMB

Until I got their split with FORRÆDERI, I had never heard of these guys. Their sound is noisy while being direct and organized and massive at the same time. This 10′(on orange vinyl) is more of the same. This time around they offer 8 songs of manic time signature changes strung together by chaotic riffing that I imagine FUGAZI might sound like if they tried their hands at writing noisy crust along side dirty screamo-ish vocals. I don’t mean screamo in a whiney-please-shut-the-fuck-up-already way. Just strained passionate screaming broken up by even more angry yelling with occasional clean vocals. This is one of those albums that you might suspect Steve Albini had a hand it except that the production is a little dirtier, which adds even more sonic intensity. I can only imagine how much energy is created during a live set. Amazingly enough, I had completely forgotten that BARREN WOMB are a two piece. Holy shit! It’s just so heavy. Inside the album the lyrics are printed all crazy like on the insert, which fits the music, though the artwork is dark and simple. Grey images on black. The album is available for free at barrenwomb.bandcamp.com, but I highly recommend buying one of these hand numbered 10″ limited to 500. They don’t release a lot of material, so get what you can. 2 RADICAL FUN TIME – E.P.

This band from Bemidji, MN has a new E.P. out and it’s pretty damn good! Four songs that fly by in under five minutes and really make you want more music from them. It’s some really well produced hardcore/grind with more hardcore than grind and some growling vocals mixed with strangled vocals and shouted vocals. Everything is well laid out in the songs, really tight and clean sounding with lyrics that are mostly easily shouted along with and a feel of the band really loving what they do. This band is one to look out for and try to see if they come to your area because the rock pretty damn hard! I’m not sure where this is available from, but give them an email and hopefully they can hook you up with some tunes, I listened to this about fifteen times so far and really want more……hint, hint to the band. ‘Grave New World’ is an infamous Discharge album, released in 1986 that saw them go hair metal. High pitched vocals and cock rock riffs with a hint of the old Discharge riffs lurking underneath. Oh how we all roared, laughed or sat in disbelief at just how different this album was. But I have a confession to make, I unbeknownst to my punk friends started listening to it on my own. And started to actually like it, but would have flat out denied that at the time. Well here we are all these years later since that album and we have had D-beat and hundreds of Discharge ‘Why’ era style bands. But what if we were all wrong? What if we had denied what could have been a whole new wave!

Enter Thisclose who have finally turned it all on it’s head. Formed by some Scottish punks who have done time in various noisy punk bands throughout the years. But now wear their collective hearts on their sleeves and show just how things should have went after ‘Grave New World’. High pitched vocals, Discharge riffs and song titles like “Two Monstrous Distro Piles” and “But After The Rigs”, I’m hooked. Stand out tracks are ‘Sexcel’ for it’s heavy crunchy guitar sound with non stop manic singing and of course ‘Tear Up The Hedge’ which is GISM, which of course is a good thing. Available on cassette limited to a hundred for £3.50 including p+p in the UK. Forget D-beat this is the Grave New beat.

The first thing that caught my eye was the name MIKE IX WILLIAMS for being a fan of EYEHATEGOD. I was super excited to get home and listen to it right away.  As the title track  “Razorblade Express” starts off with really heavy guitars and then goes super fast into a fast as hell blast beat then slows back down then goes right back into it.  Super intense beginning plus this track had the guest vocals on it.  Next is “Messiah Whore” same thing super fast and super brutal track with crushing vocals all over that. Side A ends with “Holes in the Wall” and just like the last two tracks this sums up and amazing A side to the record.  I flip this bad boy over and am pounded with another track with MIKE IX on it called “3rd Space Gorilla Generator” again a sweet track which is a little slowed down from the rest of the tracks, really heavy and doom sounding to start off this side then all of a sudden goes far left and let the grind begin. “Rat Factory” is next more of the grind with super fast and well put together guitar. Lastly there is “Slaughter Intelligence” which is the shortest track on the whole record, but it does not disappoint  at all. For Fans of PHOBIA, EYEHATEGOD and EXHUMED.  (XbezerkerX)

Vegan Winter Seitan Stew by Jolinda Hackett with Lorena Novak Bull, RD

I made this stew a couple nights ago and it was delicious. It’s easy to make and a perfect meal during a cold night.

  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 2 stalks celery, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 5 cups vegetable broth

  • 1/2 teaspoon sage
  • 1/2 teaspoon rosemary
  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/3 cup water

  • Pepper
  1. In a large soup pot, heat seitan, onion, carrots, and celery in olive oil for 4-5 minutes, stirring frequently until seitan is lightly browned.
  2. Add vegetable broth and potatoes and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, add spices, and cover. Allow to cook for 25-30 minutes until potatoes are soft.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and water. Add to soup, stirring to combine.

OI POLLOI – the Movie DVD

OI POLLOI is one of those bands we all love and that has quite a legacy and catalog of work.  They are certainly one of the hardest working bands ever, especially from the anarcho-punk scene.  It’s nothing shy of amazing that they have  continued to release quality material for a couple of decades now.  If there is a such thing as punk rock “hits” they have enough to fill a couple ‘best of” collections.   They certainly have enough punk rock party sing-a-longs!  In fact it is almost impossible not sing along with a smile on your face anytime the needle hits an OI POLLOI record.  They are one of those bands that makes fighting the system so much fun!   It is only  fitting then that we finally get a video documentation of this highly influential and important band.

The main movie features numerous and informative interviews with the revolving cast of band members and only constant member, Deek.  The long lingering question of how the band was named and what the name means is answered and documented once and for all.  It was really cool to hear Deek, in his voice and in his person describe the formation of the band and it was very interesting to learn that they came together as a counter reaction to many of the more “hardcore” bands of the day that were starting to grind out a new direction for punk (ENT, Napalm Death…).

The second half of the movie follows our favorite “post-oi/street-crust” band on ‘Ar Ceol, Ar Canan, Ar-a-march’ European tour in 2006.  It’s hear that we get a look into the recording of the only Gaelic speaking punk album ever as well as the stress of a DIY tour.  They explain how touring Europe is different and more realistic for them than a US trek mainly due to the distances traveled but also due to the violence not just at US gigs but more so in US society.  This is explained as they elaborate on stay at a house on a past US tour riddled with bullet holes from local gang gunfire.  That’s not to say that touring Europe is comfy nights in beds of roses.  There are ample stories of squats smeared in animal and human feces and urine and the difficulty of trying to get a nights sleep when the locals want nothing but to party all night at punk rock discos!   We also get to experience the stress of swapping out bass players mid tour and having to learn the songs in the van between gigs.  Ahhh…the life of “rock stars”.

There are certain bands that seem to evoke a sense of spirituality, a connection or a sense of being.  For me those bands are limited but mainly include NEUROSIS, AMEBIX, MISERY, JUDAS PRIEST and most of all BLACK SABBATH.  Watching this movie and getting this intimate glimpse into the world, lives and inner workings of this phenomenal band I really started to identify with a connection to the energy of  OI POLLOI.   It was easy to see this spiritual energy that surrounded the members of the band and I felt very lucky to be able to tap into a small piece of that.  My feelings are apparently shared by some of the members of the band as one of the former members described a similar sense and even compared being part of the “family” to religious experience.

The DVD is littered extras that include the 1994 tour documentary (I got to see that on VHS years ago thanks to my buddy Val) as well as live clips and videos.   At this point it’s almost not even necessary to impress upon you that this is a quality release and an important addition to your collection.  If you are an OI POLLOI fan there is no excuse not to get this into your hands.  (Josh Mosh)

4 “Coffee”

  • November 6, 2012
  • by Comrade Black
  • · Uncategorized

My mother drank her coffee black,
Strong,
And only liked it when it was hot.
She would pour herself a ½ a cup at a time
So it wouldn’t get cold before she drank it.
She was a farm girl through and through
Right down to how strong she made her brew
Having passed away in the house she grew up in
The house her father passed away in years before
The house we grew up in

Everything about how she lived and died

Is reflected in how she drank her coffee

My mother was a strong woman

Half a cup tall
But she made up for her height in her bold personality.
She didn’t want or need all those fancy dressings
To make her sweeter or more palatable
She was just fine as she was
Natural
Her flavour was traditional
Without all the fixings
And if you didn’t like it,
That was fine with her
She didn’t need fake friendships
Anymore than her coffee needed fake flavours

I drink my coffee like my mother did
Black,
Strong,
And I only like it when it’s hot
When I walk through the door of my local coffee shop
All the baristas know my name and order by heart
‘Heart’
½ a cup,
Black,
No saucer,
No spoon
I drink my coffee like my mother did

My mother gave me many gifts throughout my life
How I drink my coffee being the least of them
From my love of words
To my love of life
I credit her with my love for animals
To garden fresh vegetables
To cooking and baking from scratch
And the importance of having a direct relationship to the foods we eat
Living simply
But the most important gift she ever gave me
Other than life itself
Was to know
That no matter what
I could always call home
And she would always be there to answer the phone

When I was about 13 years old
I was kicked out of a coffee shop for using too much cream and sugar
When I came home and told my mother
She told me that when she was young
Her mom bet her
She couldn’t go 1 month without anything in her coffee
She won that bet
And drank her coffee black ever since
And then she bet me I couldn’t go 2 months without anything in mine
I had to win that bet,
To show her
I drink my coffee like my mother did

Lunch break the other day.  Given the locations of my job, my academics, and my internship, the Hard Times Café in Minneapolis is a logical stop for a mid-day omelette and cup of black coffee.  So there I am – sitting – waiting for my name to be shouted over the [insert doom metal band name here] track playing – and I unintentionally overhear a few elder gentlemen in conversation.  Both have been DIY longer than many of us knew the alphabet, respectable punx in theory, even more respectable as human beings (I’ve had extensive conversation with one of them before).  Their topic of commentary?  The upcoming election.

“Nao why in the fack would I vote?  Don’t mean a thing.”

Inside, I sighed myself close to death.

Please do not misunderstand me.  After years of being a mixed race person attending basement shows, playing Magic: the Gathering alongside skinheads, conversations (and make-out sessions) with die-hard social and/or economic conservatives and liberals, working with the Democratic Party, obsessively watching Ron Paul’s interviews, studying political science, and listening to everything from Disaster Strikes to Against Me! to Propaghandi to Cro-Mags to Taylor Swift (shut up), I can completely feel for how many punx out there have given up on the system.  American politics is not necessarily a fair game, and largely relies on money, power, and connections.  Paint it Black’s Dan Yemin once said on the track “Election Day,” “and who needs D.C. when I’ve got D4?”  Well, I love D4 just as much as the next Midwestern, whiskey drinking, pop-punk lovin’ sucka (I also love Paint it Black), but frankly, the system we live in requires us to at least think about what D.C. is doing.  Why?  D.C. does a lot; from constituent advocacy when the IRS or the Department of Homeland Security tries to get you (or simply makes a mistake), to monitoring and engaging in international trade regulations and human / animal rights, to passing bills that could infringe on or expand our freedom, to declaring official or unofficial wars that kill civilians and put our brothers and sisters in danger, to deciding vital court cases that permit or dismiss minority rights.  We all love our shows, our vinyl collections, and our punk community – but we cannot forget that we are merely a subculture within our global society.

Currently, The United States of America is debatably the hegemon of the world.  Simply put, the wielder of the most hard and soft power: a crucial concept to meditate over.  Our nation, if you agree with this concept (putting opinions on whether it is legitimate or moral aside), has a heavy influence on our brothers and sisters from China to Turkey to Zimbabwe to Columbia to Indonesia to Russia.  The United States is the largest economy in the world, is one of five member nation-states of the United Nations Security Council, and has by far the largest acting military in the world.   Who we choose to manage our relations with such structures is important, even if the candidates vary little.  Moreover, federal offices also have domestic implications; and everything from a State Senate elect to your Soil and Water Supervisor District pick (not to mention a few Minnesota State Constitutional Amendments) can affect your and your loved ones’ every day existence.

For democracy to work, it takes engaged citizens.  Punx are people, too.  And the punk voice is a strong one.  Look to the recent occurrences in Indonesia and Russia.  Sure, punk mentality in the United States may be stifled compared to what it was in Jello Biafra’s first heyday, but that does not mean the kids will not have their say, so to speak.  Get out there on November 6, and in future elections.  You are all intelligent enough to form your own opinions; I do not care for what or for whom you vote for.  All I care is that you vote.   Vote for yourself, if you must.  Vote for a third party.  Vote for one of the two main parties.  Be active.  Talk to your neighbors.  Read the news (and many sources, not just ones aligned with your opinions).  Phone bank.  Put up posters.  Run for office yourself.  Work for a non-profit.  Try and understand the system we are in.  The only way it will ever progress to what we want is if we work it to what we want, what we need.  The only way democracy will be real, is if we be real with democracy.

For information on how and where to vote, look into your state’s Office of the Secretary of State.  They got your back on this one.
