Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

    Living a domesticated existence
Starves people of meaning in their lives
Everyone feels the void beneath the surface
    Of everyday activities and routines

    Miserable, exploited, mass populations
Feeding the industrial systems endless hunger
    Treated like machines, living beings
Enslaved and kept passive in a technological noose

    We live in these cages
Made of concrete, glass, and steel
    A functioning human made hell
    Complete with natural scenery

    Yet there is no community
Deprived of connection with real people
    Technology perpetuates alienation
    But promises to connect us

And fill the void in our lives
In constant need of escape and distraction
    From this fucking ugly world
    Technology creeping into our lives

    Pop culture, pacifying shit
    Endless distractions to curb dissent
A society of lonely domesticated beings
Attempting social interaction behind a digital screen

Clinging to the feeling of connectedness
    Personalized profiles, mass communication tools
    Monitored and funded by pigs
    Spying on people, on movements
While corporations profit off government control
    Microsoft, apple, fedbook
    Endless lists of corporations
    Infiltrating our everyday lives
    The NSA, the CSE
Databases created from what you share
    Information for incrimination
Millions of people on terrorist watch lists
Technology’s a weapon used against us

Its function is to propel their ability
To efficiently exploit us and the natural world
While doing so capitalizing off selling us
Gadgets to distract us from the lives we live and hate

Turn off that shit, enter the real world
    You are not connected
You are alone staring into a fucking a screen

Get outside, meet with real people!
Even if we use these tools
    We must never forget

Technology is a system created by and for those in power
And it will only exist with
Division of labor, exploitation, and death

    Becoming connected through technology
    Is a sick fucking joke

Two very cool and related female fronted bands doing three songs each with one being the same song by both bands. The both have one member Candice, who plays bass and sings in the RIFF RANDALLS and sings in MILLHOUSE. Pretty good songs and playing from both bands, not a bad job on the production either. Both  have snotty vocals and are fun to listen to. This was a cool single and you should go check it out. (Rick E.)

THE SHAME - The World Is Ours 7" (4 Color Set)

This three-piece oi! band from Tulsa, OK fucking rocks!!! I heard their first album and played the shit out of it, and then I got the promo of this single and was blown away. With only four songs, this was so catchy and tight, that I’ve been playing it everyday. These guys play super catchy, sing-a-long oi! that gets you drinking and singing after the first play. Every song is a potential a-side, with no filler at all.  They sing of unity, beer, and soccer, but they do such a good job with great production and playing, that you can’t help but love it. I know, this is on Profane’s label, so he must have to like it…no, I would like this single regardless of who put it out. This is the start of Profane’s Limited Edition Singles Series, and what a way to start. I should have joined because you get a glow in the dark single and patch if you’re one of the first to join. It also comes in red, white, blue, and black. This is one band and one release that you should love. (Rick E)

I had the pleasure of doing an interview with Chad Malone, the vocalist and guitarist with Tulsa, Oklahoma’s premier Oi! band, The Shame. You might know him from political crust bands like BROTHER INFERIOR, ASSEMBLY OF GOD or BRING DOWN THE HAMMER. This three piece band plays with conviction and has lyrics that deal with getting through life, and of course, drinking. You can’t go wrong with their first CD, The Plan, or their new 7″ single out on Profane Existence called “The World Is Ours”. It’s the first 7″ single on Profane Existence’s Limited Edition 7″ Singles Series. So pull a pint of your favorite brew, imported if possible, turn on the futball, crank up the tunes from The Shame and read on!

423105_396171880453822_1265916707_n

What or who got you into punk at first?

I came from the metal scene but was drawn to the aggression of punk and thrash early on. It seemed like I was always looking for the next, faster thing. I got into Iron Maiden at age 11 and soon found Metallica (in 1984) and it wasn’t long until I got into everything from Cryptic Slaughter to The Damned to Motorhead. And yes, very much I listen to all of those early records still today.

What bands were you in before this and do you still hang out with those people/have music from them still?

I’ve been doing bands for ages and have had a lot of luck in being able to do a lot with them. I was in Bring Down the Hammer, Assembly of God, the Leveling, Brother Inferior and I still do Larkin. Ironically enough, I knew both of the members of the Shame from bands I was in early on. Josh and I were in a crossover/metal band called Mad Arab in 1986, and Giss and I were in Concept of Nonsense and Unsociety back in 1989/90.

How did you guys get together?

Over the last few years, I would continually run into JT down at the bar, and we’d sit and talk about the old days and all that. Both of us, still being into old school punk rock and soccer, we started throwing out the idea of doing this kind of band. Originally was wanted some of the old N.O.T.A. dudes to play with us, but it just didn’t work out unfortunately. Then, about the same time, I heard from Kevin and we talked about just getting together for a laugh about the old times. Once we threw the band idea at him, he was all in and The Shame was born.

59000_422889621099667_1846024587_n What kind of jobs do you guys have?

I’ve been at the same job since 1996, I work at a liquor distributor, (real shocker that one…)

Who does the writing of the music/lyrics?

So far, I have. Usually I throw an (almost) complete idea out and we’ll work on it, with the band as a whole, making the final decision on how much it sucks.

What kind of process is it?

With all the previous bands I’ve been in, I tend to do a lot of the writing and for me, it’s usually just something will hit me, then I’ll grab a drink, sit in a corner and see if I can hammer it out.

Is everyone into futball/soccer and favorite teams?

We’ll excluding the Brother Inferior years when I toured a lot and I just didn’t want to concern myself with it, I’ve played since I was young. I still suit up for my local pub team Kilkenny’s Express. And as far as support… Arsenal, since I was a boy. But I do have a soft spot for Celtic and the team around where my mother was born, VfB Stuttgart. But it should be noted, that we, as a band, unite under the banner of the Tulsa Roughnecks. I think we all 3 grew up going to those games in the early 80’s.

579853_394525060602790_536366164_n

Ever gone to a game before?

Certainly, like I said, I think we all grew up going to Roughneck matches, and I did have the luxury of flying to London, to Highbury to see Arsenal. It was Legend!! Bergkamp, Henry, Pires, Ljungberg… genius!

What kind of lyrics do you guys mostly write about and why?

We decided early on that we just wanted to focus on what our lives were really like. Soccer, beer, work and being old… I’ve always had political bands going and working class politics have always been important to me, but the focus in the Shame was set to just be “everyday life” kinda stuff. And what really sums us up, is working all week, grabbing a couple of beers and watching the match.

How long are your tours? Do you play a lot of shows?

We’re all over 40 and JT and Giss have families at home, so trying to tour has kinda been out of the question. We have just been playing regularly in Tulsa and trying to book surrounding cities. We’re thinking, more realistically, we can do short regional tours or festivals if we can get on them. So far, we’ll see… really as a band, we’re just getting started.

149447_347227901999173_378969031_nWho have you played with?

We just did a great show with the Queers, we played with Against Empire and recently we did a great gig with the Downtown Struts. But mainly we just gig with our local friends like Spank, Streetlight Fight and Triple Fang.

How often do you get together to practice/write new songs?

We practice pretty regularly, once a week or so. We seem to come up with new tunes every few weeks. It really just depends ft something new comes to me or not.

What’s your favorite song to play? Least favorite song to play?

Meh, all our songs are awesome, but there might be some that are slightly more awesome than others!

Any bonehead violence/attitudes from so called fans?

Tulsa has a bad history with racist skinheads and such, and that was always a major turn off for me when it came to the Oi! music scene. I’ve always liked the music but hated what it was associated with around here. We don’t really see ourselves as a “political” band, however, we are all very anti racist and I think that is prevalent at our gigs. So far, we’ve had no trouble at all.

Favorite beer/least favorite beer?

600290_422157651172864_543464270_n

I’ve been a Guinness drinker for ages, but Boddingtons and Tetleys have been my choices lately. At rehearsal we’ve been doing a lot of cider, Strongbow being my choice there. But you’ll struggle to find a beer that gets passed up by the boys at a gig. We certainly love a Pabst every now and again, and if the bar says the band gets Natty Light, then so be it! Tonight, it’s Natty Light!

How long did the recording of the cd take? Any stories about the making of it?

This is our second time in the studio and we’re pretty straight forward about it. We even held off on the beer until we got to the backup vocals. The 7″ was done over just one day, so there really wasn’t time to mess around. I’ve done my last 8 recordings at Valcour and Hank and I have a good partnership so, it went real smooth. Sorry to say, no drunken chaos ensued. Until I got home and saw Arsenals recent form….

Any stories about the songs on your cd?

“The World is Ours” is just about daily struggle with work and trying to get by. About getting to the weekend, to just let out your frustrations with living paycheck to paycheck. Similarly, “For Football and the Pints” is about the things we do to make existence tolerable sometimes. For me, I could watch Michael Thomas score that goal in 1989 over and over and it always brings a grin. So, yeah, football, a couple of beers and some good music have gotten me through some rough times. “Nothing Gained”, I wrote after American Airlines laid off a bunch of workers. They were just cast aside like so many businesses do, and I just thought about what it would mean if that were me or any of my friends and “Kings of the Midwestern Plains”, I wrote it to finally dismiss the ugly past of racism in the Tulsa scene.

558845_415868395135123_355711863_n

How has Zodiac Killer Records been for you?

Ron (SRP/ZKR) has been great; he stepped up and offered to put out ~ The Plan ~ when no one had ever heard us before. The disc has only been out a short while, but he has done everything he said he would and is working hard to help promote the disc. So, cheers to Ron! We owe him a couple of drinks for sure.

How did you get involved in doing the Profane Existence singles club?

I have a long history with Profane. When I was in Brother Inferior in the 90’s they helped us with gigs and distributing our records. They also put out our split 7″ with Whorehouse of Representatives. Since then, PE has always been supportive in all of the bands I’ve done and beyond that, I am glad to call them friends. Even in the Bring Down the Hammer days we came up and played the PE fest and ended up disco dancing to the Bee Gee’s with Chris (ATU) and Dan (PE). So, yeah…I am completely honored to have the Shame’s first 7″ on Profane. I can’t think of any other label I’d rather have it on.

How did you pick the songs for that release?

Honestly… they were the newest tunes we had, and we were thinking of doing a 7″ already with them, then Dan got in touch, so we went straight into the studio to record them. It was all a case of really good timing really.

579853_394525060602790_536366164_n

Any more new releases coming out in the future?

We’ve been asked to be on the next Street Punk Comp by Pirates Press, but other than that, nothing yet… just writing and doing gigs when we can.

What is available now and where can we get it?

We have a selection of shirts and other merch you can get directly from us at either our Facebook page www.facebook.com/oitheshame or just send us an email at aogfc@yahoo.com. For the CD, people should contact our label, Skinhead Retirement Plan Records and Ron will take care of you. Or if you have itunes, you can find it on there for download.

381203_243382245717073_1400136158_n

Where do you see the band going in the future?

Probably just down the bar for a couple of drinks… beyond that, who knows?

Not Dead Yet cover art

This three-piece band from my neighborhood of Temple, TX plays some fast and catchy hardcore with a good dose of energy and conviction. The nine song album starts off with a slow song which was a change of pace, but a nice way to get into the album, then on song two, shit gets serious! They come out of the gates with a good dose of speed and lyrics about how people want them gone, but they refuse to go away, and it has a Simpsons sample near the end of the song, the next one is against censorship, and the next one is about standing up to what you believe in and is dedicated to Julian Assange, Bradley Manning, & Wikileaks. Lots of cool ideas on here and this is only the third song. Then you have songs about people not thinking for themselves, the song “Frozen Blood” has a cool experimental hardcore feel to it with lots of feedback and a more metal feel, but it doesn’t take away from the power that they still put forth on this song, it’s also the second longest at just over six minutes, the real interesting track on here is the last one, “Doomsday Forever”. This track is a mind-blowing track of just over nine minutes and comes with samples from Law & Order and Fox News. This song about the end of it all is really an impressive piece of music, it shows their skill in changing the tempo, and the feel of the song as it goes by, with some peppy hardcore, distorted vocals and slower bits that have some great guitar work and drumming. The production is pretty good, giving them a loose area to fill in with their skill at putting forth the emotion that comes from them when they play. I will have to check these guys out when they play around here, and would wear a button and shirt from these guys with pride, no matter if they do have haters out there! (Rick E.)

This four piece band from Sweden have put out four hardcore songs with a pretty good dose of rock mixed in. The four songs are all really well produced with the band not being buried in the mix, but you can hear them come at you with both barrels and hitting you hard. These guys are in the vein of the HELLACOPTERS / MOTORHEAD which is not a bad thing by any means because they carry on the feel of both of them, without being a copy of them. The band really locks into some heaviness and just goes with it, making you move your head and feel it in your feet as you tap furiously along with them. From the vocals to the drums, guitar, and bass, these guys bring a glorious mess of fun on this single. (Rick E.)

0 PSYCHO – Buzzsaw Shaped 7″

This Boston band that first started up way back in 1982 has released some new music after fourteen years and it’s been far too long! We have four awesome songs, with one being a remake of “Legalize Murder” that  they did with GG ALLIN, and every one of them kills, (pun meant). This is some classic and great hardcore with no metal crap, just pure hardcore goodness. These tracks have a timeless sound and the great production helps the grittyness still shine through. This is one of those bands that should have been bigger and now you have your chance to find out about them with this cool single. It comes die-cut into a saw blade which is actually pretty sharp and looks very cool. It’s a  limited edition of 500 with only 150 of them coming on blood-red vinyl (the rest are black) and it’s in a fold-over sleeve with lyrics and info printed on the inside. You can’t go wrong if you want some old school hardcore that is just a cool release. (Rick E.)

Blue Waffle Breakfast cover art

This three-piece band from New York city play some really fun punk rock with no pretensions, and some pretty funny lyrics. The band is composed of Bryan Defiance on vocals/Guitar, Kat Kaos on Drums/Percussion/Vocals, and Jessica Carmen on Bass/Vocals. Lots of harmony on this release, great fun lead vocals, and the guitar, bass and drums are really well done as well. The production is really good, leaving the band room to move and nice and clear. This ten tracks are lots of fun, and not something for the delicate because they are raunchy, but damn, funny as hell and lots of fun too. This band is one that I am going to be watching in the future for more great releases like this. (Rick E.)

Let's Talk About Adelleda cover art

This five piece band from my hometown of Hamilton, Ontario plays some catchy melodic hardcore in the vein of LAGWAGON, NO USE FOR A NAME, BAD RELIGION and FACE TO FACE. This band plays tight, and super catchy and I have listened to it over and over again. This is the kind of catchy punk that yo can sing along with, skate to and jump around to and it makes you feel good too, what a bonus! The vocals are nice and clear, with some good gruff spots, great background vocals, quick, catchy guitar solos, the bass and drumming are right on point as well. It’s always a treat to hear this kind of stuff done right and these guys sure hit all the right buttons. They would be a band that I would love to see live and even wear their shirts for support, yes, they are that good! Nice clear production which leaves everything easily heard and enjoyed so you air guitar, bass or drum to your heart’s delight. (Rick E.)

0 DOGGY STYLE – Punkers Anthem LP

This band originally from Fullerton, California started way back in 1983 and is back after over twenty years and they haven’t changed or grown up one bit! They still have the same goofy lyrics that are made to piss everyone off, and some great hardcore punk tuneage. You do need to go into this with an open mind and try not to be easily offended because they are a total goof band and sometimes you just need this kind of stuff. I laughed so hard at some of this album, like the punk/ska of “Beat Your Meat” and singing about donuts on “Donut Shop Rock”. I loved their older stuff and now I have something new from them to crank up while I’m driving and listen to it over and over again. They were founded by Daddy X of KOTTONMOUTH KINGS, and the band lives on with original vocalist Ed “Shaggy” Caudill, plus you get  special guest vocal appearances by Jack Grisham of T.S.O.L. and Gordon Cox of The DETOURS on this LP. This is going into my play often pile, you need some goof punk in your life, trust me! (Rick E.)

0 CHRIST ON A CRUTCH – Shit Edge And Other Songs For The Young And Sentimental CD

Shit Edge And Other Songs For The Young And Sentimental

This is a compilation of their rare tracks that appeared on various compilations and EPs, all now long out of print and hard to find. This hardcore punk band also featured bassist Nate Mendel (FOO FIGHTERS/SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE) in it. You get sixteen tracks on this CD, all of which have been cleaned up and sound great, with none of the faults you hear from some other reissues. The band blazes on this compilation, you would never think that it wasn’t a completely recorded album, instead of songs from other releases, it flows that good. They were around in the late 80’s until the early 90’s and put out some great songs, and it’s great to get a bunch on here instead of trying to hunt down the originals. The band has a lot of political and personal lyrics and super tight musicianship and it’s so refreshing to hear a straight up hardcore album without any metal wanking or tough guy attitude on it. This is a great release and they deserve to be heard by a bunch of new fans, and loved by their old ones. (Rick E.)
