Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

    Living a domesticated existence
Starves people of meaning in their lives
Everyone feels the void beneath the surface
    Of everyday activities and routines

    Miserable, exploited, mass populations
Feeding the industrial systems endless hunger
    Treated like machines, living beings
Enslaved and kept passive in a technological noose

    We live in these cages
Made of concrete, glass, and steel
    A functioning human made hell
    Complete with natural scenery

    Yet there is no community
Deprived of connection with real people
    Technology perpetuates alienation
    But promises to connect us

And fill the void in our lives
In constant need of escape and distraction
    From this fucking ugly world
    Technology creeping into our lives

    Pop culture, pacifying shit
    Endless distractions to curb dissent
A society of lonely domesticated beings
Attempting social interaction behind a digital screen

Clinging to the feeling of connectedness
    Personalized profiles, mass communication tools
    Monitored and funded by pigs
    Spying on people, on movements
While corporations profit off government control
    Microsoft, apple, fedbook
    Endless lists of corporations
    Infiltrating our everyday lives
    The NSA, the CSE
Databases created from what you share
    Information for incrimination
Millions of people on terrorist watch lists
Technology’s a weapon used against us

Its function is to propel their ability
To efficiently exploit us and the natural world
While doing so capitalizing off selling us
Gadgets to distract us from the lives we live and hate

Turn off that shit, enter the real world
    You are not connected
You are alone staring into a fucking a screen

Get outside, meet with real people!
Even if we use these tools
    We must never forget

Technology is a system created by and for those in power
And it will only exist with
Division of labor, exploitation, and death

    Becoming connected through technology
    Is a sick fucking joke

1 THE DISCONNECTS: …Are Healthy: Cassette

It’s like I picked up a cassette from the late 70’s and it had some long-lost band playing CBGB’s back then. Some awesome guitar work that Johnny Thunders would love, nice and raunchy, licks getting thrown out all over the place, the singer could front the New York Dolls, but has a bit more snottiness added to his vocals, and the bass and drums are strong and driving the album forward. The production is perfect, it adds just the right amount of sleaze to the proceedings that I just love the album and had to listen to it all over again. This has to be one of my favorite bands right now, just the right amount of classic punk rock, nothing pretentious or trendy, just some great punk that needs to be played loud. (Rick E.)

Some nice anthemic punk rock on here, the kind that you can sing along to and dance around to really loud. These guys really kick some ass on this cassette, lots of hooks, great lyrics, a band that sure can play with feeling and has a ton of talent. The vocalist has some gruffness to his vocals which add a lot to the feel of the songs, great gang background vocals with some excellent woah ohs thrown in, the band has some great guitar work, not flashy, just nice and hard-hitting, the drums and the bass carry on behind with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. I’m really glad that I got a chance to check this out, they are definitely on my radar and I will be looking for more from this band in the future. (Rick E.)

2 VARIOUS: Punktology Vol. 1 – Free Cuba Now: Download

Eight punk bands doing two songs each from bands from Latin America and the Caribbean are on this compilation to showcase the cause of how Cubans suffer from suppression and oppression and 25% of the profits of this release go to Cuba Skate, a U.S. based charity providing skateboarding equipment, clothing and better opportunities for Cuban youth. You get some punk, hardcore and even an alternative rock track on here with mostly really good production, just a couple of tracks being a bit rough, but hey, punk rock and it’s for a great cause, so I’m not going to bitch about it. The selection of bands was really good, nothing too overdone or monotonous, a bit of English mixed in with the Spanish songs, an all around good group of bands that I had mostly never heard of before. Pick this one up and help out the youth in Cuba, they could use your help, I know that when I was there on holidays in the mid 80s, I stood out from the pack with my colored hair, and these kids need help from being persecuted for their looks. What’s this?!?! Celtic punk on Profane!!!!! Yes, because the punk is so damn good, you have to get it so you can go to the pub and have some pints of your favorite beer and sing and dance like a crazy person. These guys have been going since 1990 and show no sign of slowing down or wear and tear, this is every bit the fast paced, booze-filled fun that they started with their first album. There are fast and slow songs on here, but none of them are filler, they show a talent for picking out good songs. There is a Christmas song on here to add to your punk or celtic anti holiday music mix, “Angel Without Wings / Merry Christmas Baby” that has Felicity Hamer (UNITED STEELWORKERS OF MONTREAL) doing a duet with lead vocalist Finny McConnell and it’s a nice song that will get played around the holidays in my house. You also get Jake Burns (STIFF LITTLE FINGERS) playing lead guitar on “Angels & Devils and “The Waiting” and Ken Casey (THE DROPKICK MURPHYS) singing on “Spanish Lady”, so there is some punk powerhouses on here showing them love. If you want some fun, drinking songs that will make you feel good, pick this up and play it loud, just don’t spill your pint, that would be disrespectful. (Rick E.)

I loved this album, it’s one I played over and over again. For a side project, these guys fucking rock! They have that SOD feel to them and for that, I’m so happy that someone picked up the mantel of goofy hardcore and ran with it. The only sad part is that there are only five songs on here and there may never be another one, but I’m glad that they did at least put this out. Tight playing, goofy lyrics, shouted vocals and it will offend some, but oh well, that’s how it goes. If you start off with an open mind, knowing that it’s going to be ridiculous, then you will do fine with this, I loved it and it made me smile, just what I needed. I think that I’m going to listen to this again, the samples from ICE – T and the RAMONES from their appearance on the Simpson added to the coolness of this for me. (Rick E.)

Apes Of Wrath - Gorilla Warfare CD / Record cover

These guys from DEATH THREAT, CRUEL HAND and GIVE EM HELL play some angry hardcore, but they play it well. They are a tight bunch of players with some great songs and playing on this album. There are eight short, but awesome songs on here, the kind of songs that will piss of your mom, dad, teachers and neighbors so you know you’ll have a good time listening to this. The vocalist shouts, but it’s not tough guy stuff, it’s just to make you know that he’s angry, but thank goodness for booze. The band plays really well together and I hope that they stick together to give us more of their take on how shitty things are and how pissed off it makes them. Nice dirty production which adds to the grittiness of this and the guys just rage through it. I can’t wait to throw this in the car and start pissing of people outside of my neighborhood. (Rick E.)

These guys play some heavy hardcore with some thrash and metal mixed in. The vocals are shouted, but you can make out the lyrics and the intensity going on, the band is super tight with some nice breakdowns and sturdy drumming with some rumbling bass. This band really plays all out and with feeling throughout the fourteen songs on this album with songs ranging from mid paced to all out ragers. For a debut album, these guys have the feel and sound of a band that has put a few releases out together. Nice production on this album, you can hear the band, but it’s not so clean that it sounds like they are trying to be glossy, just a good and heavy mix. These guys have a really good album out and I can just imagine how wild the live show must be based on this album. Go and check them out, you will be shouting along with them at their next gig, plus the samples from the movie Jaws were cool. (Rick E.)

Some mid paced hardcore with the first song being an instrumental intro to the record. The band plays very tight and has some nice production, not super clean, but just right for these guys. The songs are all super short which is a nice change from a lot of bands playing this style who love to go on and on, showing you all of their guitar tricks. These guys are to the point and it made for a nice listen. You can hear the power behind these songs, you can almost feel them wanting to let go and get crazy fast, but they hold it back, next time, give us a super fast one, I would love to hear you guys just go hard and fast. The singer has nice shouty vocals where it seems he must need a cough drop in between the songs, but the vocals are really good. Not much guitar wank going on, just some nice work from the band all around. I think that these guys will just keep getting better with every release, and this was a good one to start with for me. 0 UP FOR NOTHING / THE FIZZY POPS / THE CAFFIENDS: Three Way Split: 7″

This six song EP doesn’t have a bad song on it, it’s a great sample of these three bands from start to finish. I liked the way that they split the bands up so you wouldn’t get two in a row from the same band. This had to be one of the better splits that I’ve heard in a long time, the energy doesn’t lag, the bands play their hearts out and it’s so full of energy that I had to listen to it a few times. You get punk, some poppier punk, a bit of faster, almost hardcore and just a great bunch of songs. There are female vocals on here, which is always nice to see on splits, great playing across the board, with some nice gang vocals, some woah ohs, and the sound of bands having a great time, that’s a nice touch since some bands get so into being serious that it gets boring, but these bands aren’t goofy, just having fun. One of my favorite records right now. (Rick E.)

0 VARIOUS: CANCER IS A PUNK: LP

  • January 14, 2013

This sixteen song release is a great compilation and all proceeds go to help fight breast cancer, so you can’t go wrong with it. You get tons of unreleased songs, as well as two cover songs, one is a BEATNIK TERMITES song “You’re All Talk” and the other is a RAMONES song “Rockaway Beach”. Very good production across the board from all the bands and it’s nice to see that these aren’t throwaway songs, but good songs in their own right. You get a ton of different styles on here as well, so that breaks up the album a bit since you won’t get tired of one style over and over again, like some pop punk, punk, a little hardcore and an acoustic song as well. Even if this wasn’t for charity, it would be a compilation to pick up just because it’s that good. A lot of thought went into picking the bands and songs and it shows with the quality of this very important release. Bands included: MIXTAPES, LANDMINES, SORE SUBJECTS, CAFFIENDS, THE FIZZY POPS, BE MY DOPPLEGANGER, FLAMINGO NOSEBLEED, THE DOPAMINES, UP FOR NOTHING, THE BOSTON THIEVES, IT GOES ON, THE PUTZ, LARF, LIPSTICK HOMICIDE, TEENAGE REHAB, DIRECT HIT!
