Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

    Living a domesticated existence
Starves people of meaning in their lives
Everyone feels the void beneath the surface
    Of everyday activities and routines

    Miserable, exploited, mass populations
Feeding the industrial systems endless hunger
    Treated like machines, living beings
Enslaved and kept passive in a technological noose

    We live in these cages
Made of concrete, glass, and steel
    A functioning human made hell
    Complete with natural scenery

    Yet there is no community
Deprived of connection with real people
    Technology perpetuates alienation
    But promises to connect us

And fill the void in our lives
In constant need of escape and distraction
    From this fucking ugly world
    Technology creeping into our lives

    Pop culture, pacifying shit
    Endless distractions to curb dissent
A society of lonely domesticated beings
Attempting social interaction behind a digital screen

Clinging to the feeling of connectedness
    Personalized profiles, mass communication tools
    Monitored and funded by pigs
    Spying on people, on movements
While corporations profit off government control
    Microsoft, apple, fedbook
    Endless lists of corporations
    Infiltrating our everyday lives
    The NSA, the CSE
Databases created from what you share
    Information for incrimination
Millions of people on terrorist watch lists
Technology’s a weapon used against us

Its function is to propel their ability
To efficiently exploit us and the natural world
While doing so capitalizing off selling us
Gadgets to distract us from the lives we live and hate

Turn off that shit, enter the real world
    You are not connected
You are alone staring into a fucking a screen

Get outside, meet with real people!
Even if we use these tools
    We must never forget

Technology is a system created by and for those in power
And it will only exist with
Division of labor, exploitation, and death

    Becoming connected through technology
    Is a sick fucking joke

Go rock Yourself cover art

Thirteen really well done punk rock song from the province of Quebec in Canada by JUST BECAUSE on their debut album. This band has some really great songs on this album, catchy, full of hooks, great guitar playing, fast paced drumming, great bass work and a vocalist who brings a lot of energy to his slightly gruff vocals. These guys are keeping up the tradition of great punk bands out of Quebec as well as out of Canada. I really was happy that they play straight forward punk rock, no emo, no real hardcore, just fast punk rock, how I love it! The last song is a cover of Kepi from the GROOVIE GHOULIES, “Full Serve”. This is an acoustic song, but it’s not an acoustic song, it starts out that way, quiet, almost celtic like then they start adding more instruments, then it becomes a great punk song. They have some nice production on here, not too cluttered, but a nice mix that gives everyone room to be heard. I really liked this album, I hope they keep up the good work. (Rick Ecker)

0 GASOLINE THRILL: Burn: CD

Some very L7 type punk and rock mixed together on this album from GASOLINE THRILL from London, England, although the band has some nods to L7, they do insert a lot of their own personality on their new album. These three woman and male drummer really do a good job of mixing the genres together and injecting a lot of excitement and energy into these songs and have made an album that can fit into both your rock collection and your punk collection. The band is able to do some slower music on here and not make it sound forced, and then jump back into the fast songs again. This is the natural progression of female bands that started in the 1990s, a bit of riot grrrl, some L7 and a touch of Hole all mixed up in a tight ball of energy to get you rocking out. The production is nice, clear enough to let everything stand out, but still not super clean to get the gruffness of this band. I really liked the mix of the slow songs and the fast, more punk songs a lot on this release, great job! (Rick Ecker)

0 BARB WIRE DOLLS: Slit: CD

This band originally from Greece barrels through some hard-hitting punk tunes that have touches of acoustic guitars and almost hardcore fury at times. No plate breaking and shouting “OPA!”, no, this band wants to break you down and love the music that they play. Vocalist Isis Queen just gets out there and lets rip with her strong, frenzied vocals that could peel paint off of walls with the intensity that she has, she also is able to bring it down a bit and lull you in, then let’s go again. The band just tears it up behind her with some great guitar work, the bass just rumbling, and the drummer frantically hitting everything in sight and the band creating a great explosion of sound on this album. BARB WIRE DOLLS really did a great job with the production on here, you can hear the band, but they aren’t suffocated or buried in the mix, a nice separation that lets you hear the angst and energy that they put forth. This has eleven blistering tracks that should satisfy the gritty punk rock taste that you crave. (Rick Ecker)

These three ladies sure rock out on this album with their mix of punk, post punk, rock and the ability to blend everything together so skillfully is a great talent. As soon as you hit play, the band grabs you and takes you where they want you to go, just look at the aggression on the cover, don’t fuck with them, they’ll fuck you up! These ten songs are great, they have such good production on here, it really makes the band shine on this album. The guitar is chunky and the leads are a-plenty, the bass is bouncing along in the songs, the drumming has some great fills and bashes away like crazy, but the real winner is the gang vocals on the album. The vocals just make you want to sing along and the band is so damn catchy, you would swear you were getting brainwashed by them, sing, but, come to shows, worship us. There is a lot of diversity on the album, they managed to mix up the songs so you don’t get too much of the same thing all at once. I heard a bit of ELASTICA on a few tracks, but these ladies carry this album on their own, using their influences to guide them, not control them. I can’t wait for more from them. (Rick Ecker)

Formed out of the ashes of  The Peccadilloes from Las Vegas, this three-piece has got a great punk rock album out, that’s right, great punk rock, something that I have a hard time finding any more. With all of the sub genres of punk out there, punk rock has seemed to get buried and watered down so much that I could rarely find a band that played it any more, and here is one band playing it fantastically! I saw the cover, check,  looked at the titles, check, looked at the band pictures, check, read the lyrics, check, then cautiously put the CD in, and it was good! They play fast paced punk rock, with a touch of RANCID thrown in, but they carry it mostly by being their own band. The band trades vocals between all three members, with some nice raw, gravelly vocals from the guys and some strong, energetic female vocals that add so much to this album. You have Jason on Guitar / Vocals, James on Bass / Vocals and Sandy on Drums / Vocals and they just fit perfectly together. The lyrics are great, political and full of thought that was put into them, not just a bunch of rants, but good lyrics showing you how things are, not too good by the sound of it. The album also has some nice production with everyone clear in the mix and not drowned out. I love this album, do yourself a favor and go get some real punk rock, get this album. (Rick Ecker)

ANTISEPTIC - LOOK AHEAD - COMB0 DEAL

Six songs that go by so fast, you shouldn’t try to sit down when you put this single on the turntable or else you’ll get pissed off that you have to go back to flip it over to the other side. Maybe that’s what these guys were going for, to piss you off like they are pissed off. They play some fast angry hardcore that borders in on thrash, but doesn’t really go into metal, they stay on the punk side and have a lot of energy on these songs. I was amazed at not only how short they were, but that they were really good songs that made me want to hear them over and over again. Lots of swear words and lots of anger and energy, what more can you want in punk rock. Pretty good production, not super clean, but it worked for these guys. Only 300 pressed, 100 on red, 100 on black and 100 on transparent vinyl. (Rick Ecker)

Drunk and Driving Straight to Hell cover art

THE DUI’S play great, fun drunk punk that has giant size choruses that are made for singing along to and they tear up their side of this single. Great playing and singing just made this a ton of fun to listen to and these guys really had some good production as well. AMERICAN DEAD play very similar punk rock to THE DUI’S, but they add a bit of rock with their punk on the last song of theirs. “The Price You Pay” was a really good song that had more depth than what I was expecting when I first put this single on. These guys really played good with the fast punk and the rock song that they did and both songs were top-notch. This single is a tie for me, both bands played really well, had great songs, great singers and it was a cool listening experience. This is out on 300 hand numbered colored vinyl, 100 transparent, 100 gold and 100 glow in the dark. (Rick Ecker)

Two bands going head to head in a hardcore showdown and NSOA come out ahead with their brand of metallic hardcore, but it was a close one. ANTISEPTIC throw down four fast paced hardcore songs that had a ton of energy and great playing, the only thing that held them back a bit was that the production on their songs was a bit muted and held back on what could have been even more powerful from them. NSOA came out to beat down all comers as usual and they did, with fast tight songs, great playing and clear production which made the anger in their songs stand out more. You really can’t go wrong with either band and this was a damn good split with two bands who can lay hardcore really well and have a ton of talent. This comes with a CD copy and comes in transparent green, transparent blue, red / yellowish swirl and glow in the dark vinyl. (Rick Ecker)

Paris, France brings us BLACK SPIRALS who play some heavy d beat hardcore laced with a fair bit of metal that hits hard and fast with their short songs. These guys have a raw sound with the singer just tearing his throat out during this album, the pounding drums and the bass just add a ton of heaviness to the proceedings and the guitar is just blazing through these tracks. They have laid down some awesome songs with great lyrics and tight playing that has them pissed off and taking it out on their instruments for our pleasure. Nice production, clear and crunchy with no fluff added so you get to hear all the rage from the band. With the songs being so short, you had better put this one on repeat so you can keep on listening to over and over again. This was originally released as a single and was put out on CD with two additional remastered tracks from their demo, so this is a great deal and album. (Rick E.)

0 NSOA: Start A Riot 1994 – 2011

  • · Reviews

NEW SOUNDS OF ANARCHISTS have been together since the early 1990s and put their first album out in 1994, they signed to SBS Records in 2011 and put out this compilation which has one track from each record that they released and includes eight live songs as well. This is a great overview of the band’s career, although I would have liked more than one song of each album, but the songs on here fucking rock! They play some nice hardcore with metal and mix it up really well with lots of political lyrics and tight playing and the singer has a nice gruff sound to his vocals which make everything more immediate sounding. The band lays down some chunky grooves and really pulls out the stops and goes as hyper speed then they slow it down for some mosh parts and go fast again. The live stuff is a bit muddy sounding which is really the only minus that I can give this, if they would have got a cleaner recording, it would be even better, but I love these guys and since it does show how good they are live, I’m not going to hate, just go out and get this if you want some great music that has intelligent lyrics and will move your ass as well.
