Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

    Living a domesticated existence
Starves people of meaning in their lives
Everyone feels the void beneath the surface
    Of everyday activities and routines

    Miserable, exploited, mass populations
Feeding the industrial systems endless hunger
    Treated like machines, living beings
Enslaved and kept passive in a technological noose

    We live in these cages
Made of concrete, glass, and steel
    A functioning human made hell
    Complete with natural scenery

    Yet there is no community
Deprived of connection with real people
    Technology perpetuates alienation
    But promises to connect us

And fill the void in our lives
In constant need of escape and distraction
    From this fucking ugly world
    Technology creeping into our lives

    Pop culture, pacifying shit
    Endless distractions to curb dissent
A society of lonely domesticated beings
Attempting social interaction behind a digital screen

Clinging to the feeling of connectedness
    Personalized profiles, mass communication tools
    Monitored and funded by pigs
    Spying on people, on movements
While corporations profit off government control
    Microsoft, apple, fedbook
    Endless lists of corporations
    Infiltrating our everyday lives
    The NSA, the CSE
Databases created from what you share
    Information for incrimination
Millions of people on terrorist watch lists
Technology’s a weapon used against us

Its function is to propel their ability
To efficiently exploit us and the natural world
While doing so capitalizing off selling us
Gadgets to distract us from the lives we live and hate

Turn off that shit, enter the real world
    You are not connected
You are alone staring into a fucking a screen

Get outside, meet with real people!
Even if we use these tools
    We must never forget

Technology is a system created by and for those in power
And it will only exist with
Division of labor, exploitation, and death

    Becoming connected through technology
    Is a sick fucking joke

Fear The Record

After thirty years, sole original member Lee Ving decided to redo the seminal album FEAR THE RECORD, and although he has a capable and talented band, his vocals don’t hit the same highs as they did back then, but that can be expected after all these years. Really, this was good if you have never heard the original, but they can’t reach the same sense of power and energy that the original album did back then. It bothered me that Ving changed the words to his songs, in “New York’s Alright” he dropped the lyric about homosexuals which for a band that never cared about offending anyone in the past to do this was weak. The band plays the songs with a lot of energy, but that spark isn’t there like it was in the beginning, and I really had a hard time with this album being remade, I would have preferred a live album or a remastered version of the original with some added tracks instead of this. I love this band, I remember getting their first album and rushing home to play it, but this is not as good sadly, but if you are interested, pick it up for the clean sound that this has and to keep Ving in beer. Man måste vara galen för att kunna va normal cover art

Some really nice Swedish hardcore with more punk to them than just straight out speed of most hardcore bands. The singer sings on here which is a treat from all of the shouting, yelling that goes on most hardcore bands which is a nice treat, being able to hear the words, of course, I have no idea what the lyrics are because he sings in Swedish, but that’s beside the point. The band plays nice and tight, no crazy leads all over, just to the point guitar, strong bass work, some hard-hitting drums and some gang vocals done really well. This is a great example of getting it all right, the band playing well, the production keeping things clear, but not to tidy to make this a great hardcore album with no metal added, just well done hardcore. These guys really did a great job on this release, do yourself and them a favor and go check them out. I have to go and play this again, nice and loud and open up the windows to let the neighbors hear it too. (Rick E.)

Weapons of Mass destruction 12" cover art

This album goes by super fast, ten songs on 45 rpm, only around fourteen minutes long and only five hundred made with  two hundred copies on transparent green vinyl and three hundred copies on black vinyl. These guys are super tight, lots of nice leads, maniac drumming, nice rolling bass and a singer in hardcore who doesn’t have to scream his head off at you. This really had a nice old school feel to it without being a knockoff of old stuff, but it just had that classic hardcore sound and feel which I love. This goes by fast, but it really seems to fit with the songs, short and to the point without any filler, this has the meat and no bones, or for you non-meat eaters, (a sad group), all tofu, no gmo’s. This was a treat to listen to, it took me back to a time when bands played like this and the bad metal hadn’t crept in yet. (Rick E.)

This is some awesome metallic hardcore from these vets who went on hiatus for a decade, but now are back and better than ever if this is any indication. Some hard-hitting blast beats, growling vocals that just rumble through the EP, the drums are just pounding away like crazy, the guitarist is throwing in some sweet leads, and the bassist is adding the right amount of heaviness to make the room shake when In turn this up loud. I had heard about this band, but never heard their older stuff, but damn, this is the shit right here. This is the kind of tasty hardcore that will have you shouting along and moving even if you try not to, it’s that good. These guys have been around since 1995 and know that they reactivated the band, they have added three new members and on here have re-done three songs from the sessions from their first album Nothing To Regret. This is a real welcome surprise and addition to anyone’s hardcore collection. (Rick E.)

Some super fast hardcore with traces of the booze soaked bands like NASHVILLE PUSSY, but not sounding too much like them, but having a kinship with them. The singer has a great growl to his voice, nice screams and throat shredding going on, the band has some sweet guitar work going on while the bass and drums just lock in and go like they are in a race, but never lose control, but you know that they could do it in a heartbeat. This has a ton of energy and never lets up for a second from start to finish, they just seem to get more wild as the EP goes by and you just get sucked in and go with it and it makes you want to break something… just awesome! I have got to get more from these guys, this is the kind of shit that makes me glad that I get to hear some bands that I’ve never heard of before because it would be sad that I never would have heard this. These guys put down some intense hardcore that veers between old school hardcore and more modern, metal based hardcore with breakdowns and lots of leads, but they manage to bring both sides together with ease. I was really apprehensive about what was going to be on here, but these guys just play the hell out of these songs and I just had to play it again. Two great singles which are both worth every penny that you need to spend on this release. I had heard that this was going to be heavier than their last release and it is, but not out of the realm of what you wanted to hear from these guys, not too much metal, just enough to make it sound fresh, and not tough guy crap either, which is always the wrong move. This came out as a release of 100 limited edition clear & white mix and 400 solid red limited edition. These guys have a long and great career ahead of them if they continue to put out releases like this. (Rick E.)

Wow, talk about going by fast, this single shoots by just under nine minutes for all eight songs to blaze past you. These guys play some tight and really well done hardcore that is slower in some parts to bring out the heaviness of the band and faster to rip your head off. They really can do the slower, heavier stuff well, and the songs all flow into one another so well, that I couldn’t believe it was over so fast, just when I was getting into them…bam…it’s over. The hardcore is pretty metallic, but with the heaviness, they have their own feel to them and you want to hear more, which is really what a god single should do, make you want more. I think that these guys would really be great to see, especially if you get near the bass bin, the bass is really important and makes this for me, not to sell the rest of the band short, especially the good vocals on here. This came out on 500 records, 100 on coke bottle clear and 400 on kiwi green color. (Rick E.)

This is one crazed single with screaming, shouting, feedback, hardcore and some death metal making this one heavy as hell, pardon the pun, release. This is not for the faint who want some nice, neat little trendy band, but want something that will challenge them and probably piss off people with. A great bunch of songs that follow along from the beginning right up until after death and then you have hell to finish it all. The songs are super short with the release only being around nine minutes in total, so it goes past pretty fast, and you really have to listen to the lyrics, which thankfully are printed on the other side of the single’s cover. This is a great, super heavy single that will please a whole range of people into heavy, extreme music, one that can be appreciated by them. It came out as 400 on black/white splatter, and 100 on glow in the dark vinyl. (Rick E.)

These two bands are perfectly suited for a split-release, they both are great hardcore bands with some metal and thrash mixed in. There are some brutal vocals on this release with both singers shredding their throats for you, the bands both giving their all with some tasty guitar work, punishing bass and drumming just hitting you as soon as the needle drops. The only thing that I didn’t like was how fast it all goes by, just over thirteen minutes and it’s finished, so you need to go and put the baby on repeat, especially with the cool download card that comes with it. The vinyl came out in five hundred copies with one hundred on mint green vinyl and four hundred on split green / gold vinyl, so hurry up and grab one fast, this won’t last long, not with the intensity and awesomeness of these two bands. Some awesome hardcore on this cassette that threw me for a loop when I first listened to it. Nice raw throat vocals, super hard drumming, some nice guitar work, bass that’s just throbbing throughout this album just made this a treat to listen to. These guys play like they are coming after you, and they just kick ass with the power that they put forward on this release. Some nice pissed off hardcore always clears out the crap on my playlist and I’ll be using this album to knock the crap away for sure. Nice and chunky, just a great release from these guys and the label, can they put out something that I don’t like…I hope not! I need to hear more from these guys, so get out there and do some more music!!!! (Rick E.)
