Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

    Living a domesticated existence
Starves people of meaning in their lives
Everyone feels the void beneath the surface
    Of everyday activities and routines

    Miserable, exploited, mass populations
Feeding the industrial systems endless hunger
    Treated like machines, living beings
Enslaved and kept passive in a technological noose

    We live in these cages
Made of concrete, glass, and steel
    A functioning human made hell
    Complete with natural scenery

    Yet there is no community
Deprived of connection with real people
    Technology perpetuates alienation
    But promises to connect us

And fill the void in our lives
In constant need of escape and distraction
    From this fucking ugly world
    Technology creeping into our lives

    Pop culture, pacifying shit
    Endless distractions to curb dissent
A society of lonely domesticated beings
Attempting social interaction behind a digital screen

Clinging to the feeling of connectedness
    Personalized profiles, mass communication tools
    Monitored and funded by pigs
    Spying on people, on movements
While corporations profit off government control
    Microsoft, apple, fedbook
    Endless lists of corporations
    Infiltrating our everyday lives
    The NSA, the CSE
Databases created from what you share
    Information for incrimination
Millions of people on terrorist watch lists
Technology’s a weapon used against us

Its function is to propel their ability
To efficiently exploit us and the natural world
While doing so capitalizing off selling us
Gadgets to distract us from the lives we live and hate

Turn off that shit, enter the real world
    You are not connected
You are alone staring into a fucking a screen

Get outside, meet with real people!
Even if we use these tools
    We must never forget

Technology is a system created by and for those in power
And it will only exist with
Division of labor, exploitation, and death

    Becoming connected through technology
    Is a sick fucking joke

Officer Down - Thrown To The Water - CD

Some great hardcore filled with woah-ohs, pummeling drums, tasty guitar leads, slick bass, and some ska thrown in as well. OFFICER DOWN has put out a great sophomore album that sounds somewhat reminiscent of the hardcore from the mid to late 1980s with the heavy bass, breakneck guitar work, drums on fast, and vocals that go from gruff to smooth and lots of gang vocals too. This was a real treat to throw on, as soon as I put it on, I had to turn it up loud, this shit kicks it up hard. This is what I really needed to hear, great, catchy hardcore that just grabs you by the neck and holds you against the wall. I really don’t have a favorite song on here, I liked them all, and the lyrics were really good, personal and well written. Great job on the production, nothing is super clean, but it’s nice and loud and gives enough room for you to hear everything without a gloss to it. This was one of the best albums that I’ve heard in a while, damn, I needed this to clear out the crappy day I’ve had. (Rick Ecker)

0 ANCHORS: Lost At The Bottom Of The World: CD

This Australian punk band has been together since 2008 and has put out an album full of hard-hitting anthems with a ton of energy and power. The songs have some great gang vocals, powerful drumming, bass that brings depth, awesome guitar leads that reach out past punk to hard rock at times and the vocals are raw, but have a great sound to them. There’s not a duff song on this release, they have made every one of the songs into an epic of punk with melody and rawness. Lots of catchy songs that veer towards almost hardcore, but not the metal type, more like the feel of hardcore on the songs. The band plays with conviction, has heartfelt lyrics, rips through twelve songs in less than thirty-five minutes and rocks…what more can you ask for? (Rick Ecker)

Holy shit, this is one of the best melodic punk records that I’ve heard in a long time! The band just plays their hearts out on these six songs, such energy and conviction, plus hooks galore on this EP. The first song “Across The Susquehanna” just comes at you from the start to pull you into this collection of songs. The playing is just so passionate that I listened to it at least three times in a row. The production is very good, lots of power and energy and fullness. My favorite song on here is the third song “American Bones” with the awesome guitar throwing out riffs all over, the powerful drumming, the rolling bass, and the gruff vocals that just grabbed me. The hook in this song is just a killer, you get some great background vocals too, I really love this damn song! This is the kind of album that makes me love punk rock and gets me wound up and it makes me crank up the songs really fucking loud and sing along. This is one of those albums that will be permanently on rotation in my collection, you need to have a copy of this one. (Rick Ecker)

Up For Nothing - In Trance

UP FOR NOTHING have been around now for over a decade and just keep putting out great songs and the quality never wanes. You get some nice tight punk rock with some great woah-ohs, bouncing bass, driving drums, great guitar leads and snotty, but strong vocals that all add up to some kick ass punk rock on the first song “This Moment”. The great thing about this EP is that they just don’t stop with the great punk rock on this EP, they just keep the quality going. This was produced by New York Hardcore legend Ernie Parada from TOKEN ENTRY, GREYAREA, and BLACK TRAIN JACK, it was  recorded and mixed by Pete Steinkopf from THE BOUNCING SOULS and mastered by Stephen Egerton from THE DESCENDENTS, so you know that this had better be a good fucking collection of songs, and it sure is. The band is tight, the vocals are top-notch and I really recommend this EP. (Rick Ecker)

Live @ Doors Pub cover artSLENDER LORIS adopted their name from a small creature indigenous to Sri Lanka that was once reportedly hunted by voodoo tribesmen for its tears and now it’s a post hardcore noise band from Hamilton, Ontario. Five short songs drenched in feedback and punk rock goodness and mixed together to bring a glorious noise fest that brings back memories of the more experimental bands from back then, but still keeps everything in the here and now. You get some fuzz guitar, screamed and clean vocals that are both crazed and melodic, drumming that bashes away, and some bubbling bass that made the band pretty catchy. You actually have a well done live album that really captures the band in its natural habitat, playing loud, furiously and really well. If I only still lived in Hamilton, I would be at your shows. Seven short blasts of hardcore that is catchy and fucking rocks out. This EP goes by too damn fast, great hardcore played with heart and conviction, with a ton of melody and it made me want to get up and jump around my living room…you know it has to good to do that! I kept thinking about when I leave the house later on and throw this on in the car and crank it up with the windows down. These songs are played really well with the guitar just blazing, the bass rocking, the drums smashing away gloriously, and the fantastic vocals that made me want to sing along with the album. I am really sorry that these guys just called it quits because this is a great shot of their music and they really should have been huge. Grab this one and play the shit out of it! (Rick Ecker)

Inamorato cover art

A very cool punk album with a little poppier sound that was originally recorded way back in 2000, but it still sounds fresh today, matter of fact, better than some bands plying this field of music. Lots of melody on these nine songs, and boy are they ever catchy too, every one of them has hooks galore. The song that really grabbed me was “Rock, Star” with the great guitar work, the pounding drums, the bouncy bass, and the great vocals. This album has great playing and the production makes the band shine with the crispness and clear sound that is on here. It’s a damn shame that the band only has this out because I would love to hear more from them, they have a great punk sound with a ton of talent that made this album a real pleasure to hear. This CD collects all of the songs from melodic hardcore band PURPOSE, with twenty-seven songs that encompass two seven-inch releases, two full length albums, seven demos, a cover of “For Want Of” by RITES OF SPRING, and one unreleased song, talk about a comprehensive collection! The first six songs have great production, the next four are muddier and flat sounding, the next four are hollow sounding and a bit flat, the next four are a bit of the same, the demos sound like demos, the RITES OF SPRING cover is nice and clear, and the unreleased song is a bit muddy as well. Now that we have the production covered, lets talk about the music itself shall we? The band goes from melodic hardcore, to hardcore, to punk rock, and finally some post hardcore all on this collection, mostly because there were a total of twelve different people in this band, so you can hear what influences and styles that they brought with them. The band is really adept at all of the various styles on here considering all of the changes in the band. They were a really good band that had a lot of potential to be bigger than they were, it’s a shame that they never achieved a larger following, but with releases like this, hopefully other people will get into them, better late than never. Ten tracks of punk rock that has a fair bit of pop in it, but isn’t pop punk. This is the debut album from THE REVELING and they sound like they’ve been doing this for a while with the great performance that they give on this album. This album has a ton of melody and is full of catchy songs that will get you up and jumping around the room to. Lead singer / guitarist Sean Morris has a great voice, not too snotty, he actually sings and gets the emotion of what he is trying to get across to you as well as playing the hell out of his guitar on the album. The band has great chops as well, the drums carry the songs along at a great pace and the bass bounces all over the place making for a fun listen. They really got a great job on the production with everything nicely mixed, but not too polished so you still get the punk rock feel that is important. The songs are all straight forward and rock out pretty damn good on this album, the song “Plaster Saints” had a bit of a WEEZER feel to it, but was still a great song as well. (Rick Ecker)

A great gritty punk rock album from these guys from the province of Quebec in Canada. These guys blast through five punk songs that range in almost hardcore speed, punk rock and almost pop punk, but they are all really good songs. The playing is tight, the vocals are a little gruff, and suit the songs perfectly. They just put out an album at the end of 2012 and they already have some more songs ready to go, I love that, no long waits between releases. These guys really are good, lots of hooks, good lyrics and the songs are not super short, just a good length where they don’t over stay their welcome. (Rick Ecker)
