Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

Vaudeville cover art

This band from Birmingham, England that has four males and one female has put out a horror punk album that has a lot of energy to it. They go from all out punk rock to a slower punk crawl with a bit more rock mixed in, but it really works for them. Of course with this being horror punk, you get the requisite songs about dead things and graveyards and such, but they have  good lyrics, a sense of humor and the chops musically. They have a song called “Danzig” which is about some guy that some of you may have heard of. It’s a thank you to him for the good times they got from him. They have good production on here, smooth, but still making the songs punchy and creepy. They seem to be having a good time and you can’t help, but have a good time listening to this. (Rick E.)

Curious Feast cover art

This three piece from Vancouver, BC play punk rock’nroll with a heavy dose of punk mixed into their sound, kind of rock’npunk. You get six songs on this recording all played really well, with a lot of heart and soul poured into it, with “Bed Bug Boogie” being a really fun track, but they are all pretty good as well. The first song, “The Thing On The Fourble Board” starts off like an industrial/experimental track, but then jumps into the rock and keeps going throughout the rest of the song and ends with a sample that sounds like Herman Munster, and the last song has a great instrumental starting at just past half way through. The production is pretty good, not too loud, no noise, just some grittiness that suits  the band very well. I really liked the singer’s voice and style on here, it sounds like he’s about to lose control at any second and the band is trying to catch up to him, and they succeed in matching his madness. They would fit in really well in a collection that has some ZEKE or NASHVILLE PUSSY in it. (Rick E.)

0 THE CLASS ASSASSINS – Equalize X Distort – The Studio 3 Sessions CD/ Download

Here we have an eight song live recording from part of an interview for the Equalizing X Distort radio show on CIUT in Toronto on November 2011. This has been recorded with no overdubs, live off the floor, so you get an idea of what they sound like in a live situation and they kick ass! This is one of the better live punk recordings that I have ever heard, other bands take note of what you should be doing when you put out live tracks. I’ve heard so many horrible live tracks added to albums to pad out space or for whatever reason, and most sound like mud, but they did an awesome job on this one. Cactus, one of their guitarists, has released the tunes on his new Anxiety Attack label. You get two really good cover versions on here, “Breaking the Law” by JUDAS PRIEST and “Fortunate Son” by CCR, that fit in really well with their originals, plus you get the exceptionally catchy Treason, from the recently released The Treason 45 EP. The band plays really tight on here, the vocals are upfront and clear, the band is just having a great time on this and it shows in their bouncy playing. I’m so glad that I got a chance to hear this since I now live so far from Toronto, that this is the best chance of hearing them live that I will get for a long time. This band is definitely a favourite, note Canadian spelling…lol! (Rick E.)

0 The Class Assassins – Treason 45 Inch Single

I’ve been a fan of this band since their first album “State of Emergency” from back in 2002 when I had a radio show on Mohawk College back in Hamilton, Ontario. I played something off of that album nearly every week on the show and not just because I had to play a certain amount of Canadian music, but because it kicked ass. Well, I am happy to say that they are every bit as good as back then, if not even better than I remember. Only two songs from this Toronto, Ontario band that has been around since 2001 and just keeps getting better.  They do great upbeat, but far from cheesy street punk with heart-felt lyrics and emotion in every song. This is the kind of stuff that I can play over and over again and sing along with and it makes me happy, not too many bands can do that to me right from the start. I hadn’t listened to them in a lot longer than I should have because this band is just too good not to listen to on a regular basis. Pick this one up and make yourself feel good. (Rick E.)

0 REPLICA – Self-titled Cassette Demo

Demo cover art

This four piece band from Oakland, CA has this five song demo cassette out and it blows past in just over five minutes. It is one of the better demos that I have heard in a long time, with pretty good production, great vocals that are perfect in the mix, with the bands blowing up things behind them. The vocals really are impressive on here, full of passion and rage, but they don’t fall into just shouty noise, they are some of the best in hardcore that I have heard in a long time. I really want to see this band or at least get someone to have them lay down some more tracks because this is one of my favorite bands right now. These three females and one male obliterate weaker bands and I know that if this is just an early demo…watch out! (Rick E.)

Mayday EP cover art

This four piece band from Montreal, Quebec has laid down four powerful tracks on this EP. They combine the power of hardcore with the shout along politics of oi! all mixed together on this release. I’m not good at French, honestly I never was, middle school made us take it all three years that we were there, and it’s been far too long since I was in middle school to remember much, but the band only does two of the four songs in French, so I could shout along with the other two in English. All the songs were really good with “You Have My Back” being the one that really stood out for me with the unity message in it. The band is fairly tight, just a bit sloppy in spots, but it’s not supposed to be perfect is it really? This band has pretty good production on this release, almost live sounding, and the singer really is shouting out the lyrics with passion which makes this one a keeper for me. Take a listen and shout some songs out in English and Francais, you’ll have fun! (Rick E.)

This six piece band from Reading, Pennsylvania brings you songs about skateboarding, horror movies, everyday life, and personal politics. They first got together in 1988 under a different name, had some lineup changes and took this name in 2000 and put out their first release, Outsiders”. After more lineup changes and many more releases, we have their new album, “As the World Burns” and it’s a fucking ripper! From the very first song, they never let up with the intensity and aggression on these sixteen tracks. They even have a Christmas song on here, “All I Want For Christmas is a Bag of Weed” which I’m sure that a lot of people will be asking for, but they need to ask for this album too. You might get mellow from the weed, but this album will make you want to get up and thrash around with your skateboard and tear shit up, not sit down and snack up. This band brings you some awesome thrash, hardcore, punk, and skate core all mixed together and totally in your face with a powerhouse punch to get the point, which is get up off your ass and have some fucking fun! These guys have mostly super short songs, but you need that or else you would be wiped out , but that would be ok, then you could enjoy your Christmas present….lol! The production on this is great, clear and crisp, great vocals and the band is tighter than a frog’s ass in a pond. I now have to hunt down their older releases……..so many good bands I’ve been hearing lately…..damn! (Rick E.)

This band from Colorado Springs, Co has recorded seven straight up, old school oi! songs that bring back memories of the good old days when punk and oi! bands were still pretty close. There is nothing pretentious or pretty about these songs, they are a working class band who sing about what you would expect, drinking, fighting, and they have some personal opinions mixed in. I know, this is the same stuff every oi! band sings about, but who cares! If I wanted to hear nothing except people shouting political dogma at me, I would go to a political rally, I want entertainment damn it! These four guys do a good job at what they do and I liked it, matter of fact, I want more from them and I would go see them if they played around me, I would wear a patch, t-shirt and a pin. How’s that for not caring that they are “just another oi! band”. These songs were fun, they made me tap my feet, and I listened to them more than once. The production was good, the gruff vocals were good, and the band was not super tight, but it worked really good on here. More, I want more!!! (Rick E.)

This four piece band from Toronto, Ontario is two males and two females who play some catchy punk rock, not too sloppy, but not too neat and tidy. They play with abandon and pure fun, you can hear it in all of the songs on here from start to finish. You get six catchy punk songs on this EP which are played fast, but not fast enough to be classified as hardcore, just fun, fast paced punk, something I never can get enough of and wish that more bands played like this instead of lame pop punk. The songs are mostly short with only two around the three minute mark, which was nice, but I was wanting more, which is a good thing, so hurry up and get more tunes out there! The production was pretty good, with clarity in the mix and enough space to give everyone there spot to be heard. I think that this was a really good EP and I’m really looking forward to hearing more from them in the future. (Rick E.)

0 RAD ‎– This Is Not A Final War – Cassette Demo

This cassette is eleven songs of super blazing fast hardcore/thrash from this four piece band from Sacramento, CA. They have a female vocalist, but she doesn’t shriek like a lot seem to do when doing this kind of music, but she makes it work with her aggression on this release. Not one song on here is over forty-five seconds and the shortest are under or around ten seconds long, so you know there is nothing wasted on here in getting the message across. The band just pummels away behind the vocalist and creates a swirling slam fest that zips by so fast that you have to listen again and again to it. The production is average, but it doesn’t really take too much away from this one. I’m hoping to hear more from them in the future and see where they go. (Rick E.)
