Not So Sweet As You Think album cover

This three-piece punk band from Italy formed in 2010 and stayed together until 2012 and then changed the guitarist and then put out this four track EP. The first year they played fifty-six gigs, and some were with the MISFITS, MARKY RAMONE’s BLITZKRIEG, and the VIBRATORS. The EP starts off on a nice fast pace with the song “R U Ready” and keeps up the pace all the way through to the last track “Antisex”. The vocals are nice and rough, a little scratchy, kind of like found on the PLASMATICS old albums, but with their own feel to them, the band charges through the songs with energy and life, that it made me want to hear more of this band. This two male, one female band seem to be having a lot of fun on here and it shows, they really love what they are doing. The lyrics are in English and this is worth the hunting around that I did to find it. A very good release from a band that I will be keeping my eye on. (Rick E.)

This four piece hardcore/punk band from Houston, TX has thirteen tracks on their new release, with a bonus track at the end making for fourteen tracks of DEAD KENNEDYS inspired tunage. The guitars buzz, the drummer thrashes away behind, the bass keeping up nicely and the singer who has a bit of the Jello waver in his voice at times is spitting out a lot of venom during the whole thing. They have some really cool lyrics that you can get off of their Facebook page about how “Pop-Punk Must Die”, on “Perry” the sing the praises of Governor Rick Perry, (they really hate him), they sing about the crap of the wars we’re stuck in on “$9.11”, the song “Monotony” has the SEX PISTOLS song “Problems” feel to the repetition of the way they keep singing “Monotony”, of course the strong anti religious lyrics on here, and a ton of other great songs. This brings me back to the old days of the 80’s when bands would have so much anger and wanted people to think for themselves, I’ve missed this. The production is a bit raw and it took me a second or two to get into it, mostly because a lot is so over produced nowadays, but since this is punk, fuck it, I liked it! I’m glad there are bands out there, especially in tight ass Texas, that want to get in your face and make you think. This one blazes by pretty quick even though there are some longer songs, but they get you caught up in their fury that you lose track of time. On a side note, I have a cat named Sydney and the phrase “SHUT UP SYDNEY” has been said around my house lots of times, so I had to look into these guys, who got their name from the SEX PISTOLS. This is available from the band and they are looking at putting this out digitally. Definitely pick this one up, go to their Facebook and give them some love, for their hate. (Rick E.)

This four piece from East Vancouver, BC Canada really surprised me with this release. I have heard their name before, but never heard their music, I’m sorry that this has happened because this is a fantastic album! They come at you from the start with twelve tracks with such power and it just made me take in all the nuances that are here. You get the awesome bass guitar work throughout the album, the fast licks thrown out by the guitarist, the unrelenting pounding of the drummer, and the more surprising things, like the violin on the track “Uncontrollable”, and the keys on “It Can’t Be Just Me” and “The World Turned Upside Down” are all such nice surprises on a punk album, the album even ends with a cover of a peaceful acoustic protest song by LEON ROSSELSON, “The World Turned Upside Down” which was also covered by BILLY BRAGG. The album is just so damn catchy, with some great gang vocals and some great whoa-ohs, but it isn’t wimpy in any way, just a solidly played album and the production is nice and tight, letting everyone get their instruments in and with clarity which makes you want to start singing along with them and playing the air instrument of your choice. This band could become really popular, but not in the obnoxious way, the kind that the cool kids know them and support the shit out of them. You need to get this one and just crank the fuck out of it! I need their older releases now…..damn you!!!!! (Rick E.)

ICHSUCHT – Stadtkind which means “Egomania – City child” are a Hamburg, Germany four piece band with a female vocalist who have a pretty tight release out right now. Six hard-hitting punk/hardcore songs with nice clear production, clean vocals that are easy to understand, well, if you understand German that is. They have a nice pissed off feel to the songs, plenty of whoa ohs thrown in, a sing a long style that makes me wish that I was better with my German, nice heavy guitar and bass, and the drummer is smashing away perfectly in the back. These songs go by pretty quick and make me want to hear more, always a good sign. They have a CD that comes included with the vinyl EP which comes on white vinyl, or you can just get the CD, or go download it to hear it and then go buy something from them, a definite keeper and one that I’ll be listening to often. This four piece hardcore/punk band from Lodi, Italy has five slamming tunes for your listening pleasure for free, just click on your mouse and you can be slamming away to these tunes in your house. These songs have a nice old school hardcore feel to them and spice it up with some modern feeling and energy to make it sound fresh. The lyrics are nice and clear, really good production which makes this one to play loud with no distortion at all, all the songs are in English, they have a nice sing a long aspect to them, great background vocals, nice tight drumming, and the guitar and bass aren’t slouches either. This kicks off on the first track and kicks you in the pants to keep up with it for the five songs, and makes you want more from them. The vocals in some parts remind me a bit of Wendy O’ Williams from the PLASMATICS, but don’t copy them, just a hint of her in them. They have been around since September 2011 and with the addition of their new singer in January 2012, allowed Slut Machine to perform its first live concerts. Only a couple of months later, in March, the band held its first live concert, playing its songs at a motorcycle rally and meeting the crowd’s strong enthusiasm. I hope that they come up with more songs and a release to physically have because this is really good. Oh yeah, they are a four piece band of females, but that doesn’t matter, they rip regardless of what sex they are! (Rick E.)

This four piece hardcore/punk band from Northwest Connecticut has been around since May 2010 and has previously released their first demo, “The Damn Demo”, in April 2011, the band released their second demo, “Politics and Lady Parts” and now they bring us this new one, “Loud, Fast and in the Dark”. I haven’t heard their older music, but damn, this is pretty fucking good! I was so surprised to hear how good this was with them being together for just over two years and just the two other releases before this. They throw a lot of really good musicianship at you, good, clear vocals with some good shout along parts, nice tight breakdowns, some ska thrown in for effect and even a rip on the Monkees, “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone” all on this beast. They give a shout out to the bands that came before them and the scene in “CTCP” with some great oi! on it, the ska slips in, but doesn’t get in the way of the song “Live In Fear” because they go all out hard and fast in it as well, how shitty it is to pay to play on “Pay To Play, and of course, religion on “War On Religion”. The song “Girl Bands Suck” is too funny, but very important to listen to since this is a band consisting of all females, but they are not a girl punk band, they are a fucking punk band! I loved this album and you should grab it and crank it up and see them if they get to your neck of the woods, guaranteed a good time! (Rick E.)

PISSING CONTEST from Battle Creek, Michigan are a two piece band that has Matt Dilliner who is the co-owner of Say-10 Records and Skateboards handling vocals/guitars/drums, and Jake Morley on bass. They give us six songs that were recorded very quickly after getting together after only being formed on July 21, 2012 (National ‘Go Skateboarding’ Day) as a knee-jerk reaction to the frustration of our times. You would never think that they did this so fast as with only two guys in the band on this, they play very tight hardcore with nice hoarse, but clear vocals, very good production and a sense of things almost coming apart, but staying together. The lyrics are nice and pissed off views of how fucked things are and how pissed off they are and it sure shows! The lyrics are spit out with disgust at the crap that they see in the world and they really seem to be heart-felt and it’s great to see this kind of anger and energy not only from just two guys, but because they were hardly together for a long time, so I hope they keep up this in future releases. It’s out on a handmade cassette with only 77 made! Each one has spray painted tape case, is stenciled and handwritten, so grab one quick. (Rick E.)

YOUTH OFFENDER is a three-piece from the Dublin/Brownwood area of Texas and have made two songs of theirs available to download for free, and now you can go get them for the effort of a mouse click…what a deal! They do some fairly straight forward hardcore with punk rock leanings and it’s not too bad at all. The two songs are “Conservative Eyes” and “I Wanna Be In Shut Up Sidney”, with the requisite snipe against right wingers and wanting to do anything to be in SHUT UP SIDNEY, a hardcore band from Houston. The production is fairly basic, not clean, but not so sloppy that it affects the enjoyment of this, with the lyrics still able to be heard and enjoyed and the band seems to be having a good time making some fun noise for us. This comes with lyrics so you can see that they aren’t just a bunch of jokers like their Facebook makes them seem, but they actually have pretty good lyrics. I was pleasantly surprised with this one and I’m glad that I got a chance to hear them and I’m looking forward to hearing more from them and hope the production is a bit cleaner next time, but hell, this is punk…right? 2 RADICAL FUN TIME – E.P.

This band from Bemidji, MN has a new E.P. out and it’s pretty damn good! Four songs that fly by in under five minutes and really make you want more music from them. It’s some really well produced hardcore/grind with more hardcore than grind and some growling vocals mixed with strangled vocals and shouted vocals. Everything is well laid out in the songs, really tight and clean sounding with lyrics that are mostly easily shouted along with and a feel of the band really loving what they do. This band is one to look out for and try to see if they come to your area because the rock pretty damn hard! I’m not sure where this is available from, but give them an email and hopefully they can hook you up with some tunes, I listened to this about fifteen times so far and really want more……hint, hint to the band. 2 BORN WRONG / KLEINS96 Split 10″ / Download

What we have here are two hardcore bands from Canada, BORN WRONG on Rebel Time Records from my hometown of Hamilton, Ontario with their debut on vinyl and KLEINS96 from Regina, Saskatchewan on Harvest King Records. Both bands are politically motivated and really pissed off at a lot of thing like religion, war and people’s apathy about things going on in the world today, all cool things to be pissed off about. They both have a tight sound with very little in the way of metal type sounds and some good breakdowns, perfect for having a slam or three. Great screamed vocals that you are able to understand, which is not always possible with modern hardcore, but they do have a bit of an old school feel at times. The production is pretty good, tight enough to fit all the rage in without losing control of the proceedings and clear enough to hear all the different sounds coming at you, but never to pretty to take away the toughness of the bands. I enjoyed both bands quite a bit and would love to hear more from both of them, they seem like they would both put on good shows with a lot of intensity and excitement. The lyrics are on the bandcamp site and it would be a good thing to take a look at them because they are quite good and heartfelt. (Rick E)
