Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

1 State of the union…Stinkbot’s column

Springtime is a time of change, but not reflective change. It’s time for action. As the trees blossom and nature erupts all around us, it becomes time to wake from the nightmare of winter and come alive.
Profane Existence changed formats at the end of winter and as springs growth moves forward so shall we. The time for a limited number columnists, reviewers and contributors has come to an end.
We are no longer shackled by the constraints of page size. We can handle a number of authors and ideas in our new format and so I am inviting you to contribute to this project.

We, sadly  have lost some columnists. Some folks feel like the new format doesn’t fit their ideal, and that’s fine. I would point out that the feedback we receive and traffic our site gets is far greater that anything we’ve seen in a dog’s age. We can work together , if you blog we can link to one another! SEE COOPERATION!! THAT’S ANARCHY…or is it communism? who cares?

We want to know what’s going on in your area, and so we are giving you a platform to share the story of your punk community. Is there injustice in your particular neck of the woods? Tell everyone about it. You know what’s going on so please tell everyone! If you are interested in writing  for Profane Existence,  please contact me. My email address is zine (AT) profaneexistence (DOT) org.

As long as stories are honest, well written (within the boundaries of punk rock authorship which is open to interpretation), and compelling, we’ll post it. All we ask is that if you are posting facts, please also send along sources.

YOU can join the ranks of the perverted.

He Brings It On To Himself

“And in this corner

Yup, this is where my status as an                  Outsider
begins, but of course
it never truly ends
A lot of people talk of a pressure to conform
to fit in –VS- a need to go their own way
like that perpetual Black Sheep
always “out of step with the world”
[i]
but for me it was never that easy
because I never had the choice or option  to fit in
bell hooks said once upon a time that
“Being oppressed means the absence of choices”
well for me
fitting in was never a choice
So in one corner
there’s me
not even aware that I had been born into a boxing ring
and in the other corner
is societies social status quos
the bullies
and the bastards that laughed along
I was so small
in a world built for
big
they couldn’t even find a hospital ID bracelet for me [ii]
So how are they gonna find 10ounce gloves in my size?
never mind protective headgear…
Yup, I was way outta my weight class right from the beginning
so as you can imagine I took a lotta shots

Aaron: We talked about having a name with a bad luck theme, and I just thought those words sounded good together.
Johnny: Yeah, we just picked something that sounded good; really that is how we came up with it. We had a list of names and chose what sounded best and fit us and what we are about.

0 CCCP invades Wales!!

Wales. A land known for…Tom Jones and excessive use of consonants, almost Finnish really and though not renowned, hella good foods. The CCCP spurred on by comrade Jake has decided that the Welsh cuisine needed punk rock veganizing and so here you have the first batch of recipes from the Welsh isles!

Enjoy and please let us knowhow you enjoyed them, send recipes and post photos of your creations!!…

This was totally new for us, but it was fun veganizing traditional recipes
from a region that doesn’t get much coverage. I hope you enjoy them! (Jake)

Picau Ar Y Maen(Welsh Cakes)

These are like a cross between a scone and a biscuit that are cooked on a
griddle instead of being baked.

1 C of whole wheat pastry flour
4 oz non-dairy margarine like Earth Balance
1 tsp mixed cinnamon
3 oz unbleached cane sugar
3 oz currants
pinch of sea salt
zest of half a lemon
2 TBSP ground flaxseed, blended with 4 TBSP water
a small amount of non-dairy milk to blend if necessary
Sift the flour, salt and cinnamon into a mixing bowl and use your fingers
to combine the margarine until the mixture makes a fine crumb. Add the
sugar, lemon rind and currents. Pour in the flax/water mixture and stir
to make a firm dough, add a tiny dash of milk a little bit at a time if
the dough is too dry. Don’t add too much or it will become gooey.
On a floured board, roll or press the dough to approximately
1/4″/thick and cut into 2” or 3” discs.
Places cakes on a medium hot griddle for about 3-4 minutes per side
turning once, until golden brown on both sides but still a little soft in
the middle. Dust with sugar (optional) and serve hot. They go well with
fruit spreads or just by themselves. I like them with tea or coffee in
the morning.

“Civilization is not and can never be sustainable. This is especially true for industrial civilization.” – Endgame Premise 1, Derrick Jensen

I’m writing this just a week after the World Wildlife Fund’s annual Earth Hour event. As usual, I’m stunned and left in awe by the event. Don’t get me wrong here – I’m in awe not because we were able to defeat the energy companies and cause the collapse of an economy and civilization which survives at the expense of ecosystems and distant cultures. On the contrary. I’m in awe at the fact that people – well-to-do liberals, mainly – actually believe that turning their power off for an hour every year makes a dent in the levels of man-made carbon in the air. The fact that these people have deluded themselves to believe that a simple act like not using their television for an hour actually amounts to a lick of change. Yeah, I’m in awe. In awe of the culture of symbolic “action” in the face of huge adversity.

As has been written in these pages and screamed about on countless punk records, our world is fucked. From environmental devastation to genocide of indigenous cultures; from greed-driven wars to the mass slaughter of non-humans to the mass slaughter of third-world humans. All sorts of sick pleasures that benefit the privileged few at the expense of the world majority. And yet for some reason, the masses of us in the privileged part of the world who claim to want to change this can only come up with mindless symbolic “actions” to raise awareness or “change”. This just smacks of pure self-indulgence and ignorance of this culture’s role in mass destruction. Not to mention ignorance of our culture’s inherent privilege.
I don’t think there’s any conscious person out there who would deny that the so-called “first world” benefits greatly from the exploitation and wholesale destruction of the natural world. However, there is a big difference between awareness and action. Being aware of something is the easy step. Doing something about it is where a lot of us fall behind.

1 On Analogies as Advocacy Tools: Some Thoughts on Appropriation

  • April 11, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · Features · PE Web Zine

Article from Because We Must dot org

A topic I’ve seen come up frequently on Tumblr and other social media sites lately is about privilege and veganism, which actually encompasses a broad spectrum of issues. Some of these are more clear-cut than others. While I think it’s valid and useful to talk about economic privilege and the relative accessibility of vegan foods, I will not be focusing on that here. I think there is another very pressing issue that gets less visibility that should be constantly on our minds: appropriation of human oppression to describe exploitation of nonhumans.
You’ve seen it before. Pictures of dying animals used for food crammed into slaughterhouses juxtaposed with an image of mass graves in concentration camps, or a picture of a lynching victim next to a pig suspended in the air by rope to help drain blood after the throat is cut. These are common, visceral, and almost always used as graphics with little or no context or description.
People who use graphics or arguments like these as part of their advocacy frequently say that people won’t understand the exploitation and abuse of nonhumans unless it’s described in simple terms, or that we should “call it like it is”. Moreover, they say the only people who have problems with such comparisons are speciesist themselves; that is, if the person in question were vegan and a supporter of animal liberation, then they wouldn’t have a problem with such tactics.
To all that I usually say: “wow”. But I can be more specific about why these tactics are problematic, and why dismissal of arguments or anger against them is exactly the kind of privilege we should seek to expose and root out.
It is unethical to hijack narratives or tap into the pain of historical trauma for your “education” project, as seriously as you may take it; you cannot use a story or experience as a point of comparison when that very experience is not taken seriously on its own terms. People of color, and more specifically, Black people, see their current and historical traumas used by a variety of movements as selling points or as “helpful illustrations”. The pain of racism and the violence and damage it causes is objectified as a rhetorical tool, and not understood on its own terms or respected for its uniqueness.

And what we’re really saying, again, is the sources of comparison are really unimportant in the context of nonhuman suffering. It’s just used as a stepping stone to get to an item on our agenda, rather than a separate serious concern that we work on simultaneously with nonhuman liberation struggles. Lynching and the Holocaust become illustrative and figurative; this is continuing the violence and delegitimization the survivors have to continue to experience by our privileged oversight.
We only feel comfortable bringing up lynching and the Holocaust and epidemic gender and sexual violence because they are easy tools to appropriate. It’s easy to be against them, but not so easy to understand the specific conditions that support them, or the implicit attitudes that continue to inform them even in people with the best intentions. It’s not a fair comparison not because nonhumans don’t suffer, but because erasure of difference is not taken seriously and that does significant damage.
Speciesism did not kill Emmett Till, racism did. To deny that root cause by a simplistic graphic you whipped up on publisher in 5 minutes is why we still don’t take racism seriously as a deadly and oppressive force with a history and contemporary record of killing Black people with impunity.

Activism: You’re Doing it Wrong
Solidarity does not require us all to be the same. By definition, it implies there is some piece that is inviolable, unique, and worth appreciating from a perspective that will never fully understand its effects or implications. We have the vision of building better coalitions when we rely on true solidarity, rather than doing what’s been done by the very oppressive structures we criticize.
Oppression of nonhumans has a history and quality that is all its own. We do a disservice to the nonhumans we advocate for when we erase their specific experiences in order to hang them on the scaffolding of human experience. We imply that the only meaningful way to talk about pain and suffering is through human terms, and then only those human terms we feel okay with constantly appropriating and co-opting. This is not a good framework for the non-speciesist society we wish to envision.
This really demonstrates, in action, what Breeze Harper describes as the whitewashing of the vegan movement. Whiteness that is by nature, reductionist, consuming, and gains power by co-opting and appropriation is why advocacy tools like these are so popular. Not only does this misrepresent our larger goals of total liberation, it silences PoC vegans and animal liberation advocates who are alienated by such rhetoric and aren’t taken seriously when they promote their own tactics and work.
I’m not saying comparisons or analogies are 100% never helpful. I am saying that they are frequently used without care, without self-reflection, and with the assumption that being anti-speciesist automatically comes with a pass freeing you from checking relevant racial, economic, and gender privilege. I am saying that more often than not, most examples alienate the people you are appropriating for your cause and that does damage to all of our goals. Nuanced examples require research and thoughtfulness that seems impossible to do in a simple graphic or a tweet. So their use following these guidelines would be well researched, vetted for accuracy, come from non-privileged folk, and be used sparingly.
It is not speciesist to ask that your historical and contemporary trauma be respected. It is not speciesist to ask that “abolitionist” not be used to describe anything other than as relevant to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade (especially when the people appropriating the term frequently know next to nothing about actual abolitionists or racial struggles).
The atrocities that non-humans experience are bad enough (and we have the pictures and the language to capture this horror) without constantly appropriating the pain of others, especially when explicitly asked not to.
We have creative methods that are non-exploitive that deliver our message. Pushing ourselves to do more, rather than relying what’s been done before, seems to be the most effective route to take.

0 SALMIAKKI YÖUTH – Otamme salmiakki takaisin sydämiimme 10” + CD Review

  • April 10, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

This is supposed to be a new pressing of a previously unreleased demo from 1983. The sound quality seems a bit good to be from a demo that’s just about 30 years old but who knows, right? The good thing is even if this isn’t from ’83 its still really damn good. SALMIAKKI YÖUTH were/are from Tampere, Finland(I’m a sucker for Finnish HC) and I’d never heard them until now. They have some of the great elements of early Finnish bands like KAAOS, RATTUS, etc. but what really fucked me up was the extreme ECONOCHRIST vibe I got from SALMIAKKI YÖUTH. They have some of the technical guitar work and rhythms that you would hear from the Eastbay circa 1993 but the vocals have that early Scandinavian reverb. Then I read the little SALMIAKKI YÖUTH quiz that came with the record and Question #19 gives it away first: they reference JUGGLING JUGULARS as a old band that they try to copy, only JUGGLING JUGULARS started in 1989, gotcha! They also make reference to using an online translator, being hard-to-find punk legends, and getting their hard-disk stolen in an armed robbery, classic. All that aside SALMIAKKI YÖUTH are really fucking good!
This 10 inch is really well put together; it’s single-sided and pressed into white wax, has good CRASS styled cut n’ paste artwork, the little quiz, and a CD copy. No lyrics were provided but judging by the imagery it’s probably political in nature.
