Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

0 Looking Back on The Occupy Movement – An Interview

  • November 20, 2012
  • by PE Admin
  • · News · Radness

1. Your assessment of the Occupy movement was very positive. What is the overall perception you have of this movement today? What is left of Occupy?

There is not much left of the Occupy movement as such — almost all the encampments were destroyed in November or December 2011 and virtually no new ones have emerged. On the other hand, the movement was in no way “defeated.” With few exceptions, the people arrested were quickly released and totally exonerated. The elimination of the encampments simply had the effect of forcing the participants onto other, more diverse terrains of struggle. Countless people all over the country continue to meet regularly, to network with each other and to carry out all sorts of actions — picketing banks, disrupting corporate board meetings, blocking home foreclosures, protesting environmental policies (Monsanto, Tar Sands Pipeline, fracking, etc.), in addition to more specifically “occupy” type actions such as attempting to take over and reopen schools and libraries that have been closed and abandoned, or “Homes Not Jails” attempted takeovers of vacant housing to provide dwellings for homeless people. One of the most interesting and well planned of these latter types of actions, “Occupy the Farm,” took place just a few blocks from my home last April, when ecological activists took over a large plot of vacant urban land and turned it into a community garden, planting more than ten thousand seedlings in the space of a few days. The gardener-occupiers were driven out after three weeks, but the agitation continues and has resulted in a temporary victory against a planned commercial development. [November note: Since the completion of this interview the immense disaster relief work of Occupy Sandy is yet another very important and exemplary development.]

The Occupy movement already had the implicit goal of “reclaiming the commons” — occupying public squares or parks played on this theme, since regardless of quibbles about permits it was obvious that such spaces belong to the public and are, or at least originally were, intended for public use. But these more recent actions have the merit of challenging the fetish of private property in a more direct manner. That fetish has always been extremely strong in the United States, and the police responses to its transgression have always been more immediate and brutal. But I like to hope that these types of actions will eventually weaken the fetish, just as happened in the days of the Civil Rights movement. Back in the 1950s and 1960s, when black people first started restaurant sit-ins, one often heard this argument: “That restaurant belongs to the owner, he has the right to do whatever he wants with it, including deciding who he wants to serve.” But as more and more people kept peacefully sitting in and calmly accepting arrest, the general public was gradually brought around to the idea that there was a “higher law” than property rights — that other rights also had to be respected, such as the right to be treated fairly as a human being. I think this may eventually happen with these post-Occupy invasions of various types of property, as people see the absurdity of there being millions of vacant buildings while there are millions of people living in the streets. Even now many people sympathize with the idea of defending a family against foreclosure, despite the fact that a bank technically owns the home, because there is increasing awareness that the banks have often acted illegally. The notion of reopening abandoned schools, etc., is even more exemplary in that it hints at the notion of a society based on cooperation and generosity rather than on how much money can be made from something.

The two drawbacks of these types of action are that they are risky and that they thus tend to be the work of a small minority (mostly young and mostly male). Occupying public spaces is much more likely to attract the sympathy, the support, and ultimately the participation of multitudes of ordinary people (including parents, children, elderly, disabled). But for those who want to push the limits and don’t mind the risks, taking over vacant buildings and opening them up to public uses is much more challenging and inspiring than breaking windows.

Limited Guiness (black and tan) colored vinyl with embroidered olive Profane Existence patch!

Deviated Instinct formed in 1984 and were a crucial pioneering band in the early British punk/metal scene. Along with bands like Antisect and The Amebix, Deviated Instinct’s music has influenced legions of bands and helped to define the sound we know today as “Crust”. This is their first new studio release in over 22 years. It’s everything fans have come to expect from Deviated Instinct and more. This album features four songs of epic proportions. Their sound on this record bridges the gap between d-beat style crust and heavy metallic doom. The songs are well thought out and skillfully played with top notch studio production. Includes a download card for a digital version plus extra bonus material. BUY HERE

0 Profane Existence Distro Shutting Down – Massive Clearance on Now!

  • May 9, 2012
  • by PE Admin
  • · PE Records · Store Specials

We’re far too busy with other commitments (bands, zines, family, fucking up the system, etc.) to continue running such a vast and time consuming operation as PE Distro. We’ve been slowly scaling it back over the last couple of months, but now we’re reaching our self-imposed deadline to call it quits. To speed up the liquidation of our inventory we’ve further reduced prices to practically give-away levels: Zines, CDs, 7″s, cassettes, and even LP records have been marked down to as low as $1. We’re going to be going through all of the shelves and bins the week and scouring them for stuff missing from the web store, so don’t be shocked if some new stuff is added later this week. But don’t wait either because the “good stuff” always sell out first!  Check out PE distro HERE.

FYI about the shopping cart: The postage system is strictly weight-based, so don’t be alarm if your shopping cart full of $1 albums costs more to ship than the cart subtotal!  We’re too busy to answer your questions like “how much will _____ record cost to ship?”  Put it in the shopping cart and go through the checkout process and see for yourself. Payment is the final step of the process so it’s not going to cost you anything to check the prices – including the shipping.

And to keep things perfectly clear, we are NOT shutting down PE Records or the PE Weblog.  We will still run a small web store, but it will be focused strictly on Profane Existence releases, including exclusive special editions, color vinyl, limited run shirts, etc.  Of course PE Records titles will continue to be available through such places as Interpunk and your local independent record store and small distros. If you are looking for PE titles wholesale, Ebullition may still have select titles and everything will soon be available through Independent Label Distribution.

Don’t miss out on this chance to get rare, obscure, imports, hard to find CD’s for $2 or less!

Or, if you missed out on the moving sale, we’re going to extend the coupon code MOVING another couple of days. This code will get you 60% off everything, including vinyl, T-shirts, etc.

  • · Store Specials

Profane Existence distro is moving to a new space in April and we’re counting down by taking an additional 5% off each day for orders of $25 or more. For example, the first day of the sale will be 5% off, second day will be 10% off, until we reach 60% off on March 31st. You must use the coupon code MOVING when checking out to receive the current day’s discount and your order subtotal must be at least $25 for the coupon to work. The discount is good for everything we sell (and we have over 1000 titles 0n the shelves) but quantities are limited on many items and the best stuff will disappear first. Whatever we don’t sell we’re going to have to move, so we may extend the sale into April if we have to!

Joel Olson

Joel Olson
Joel Olson printing PE T-shirts while still wearing is "Hippycore" locks.

We have just received word that Joel Olson, aka Joel Hippycore, AKA Doctor J passed away this week. Joel Olson was a member of the Profane Existence Collective in the early 90’s, while working on his PhD at the University of Minnesota, co-editing PE magazine issues 11-20 and contributing articles to several subsequent editions. During this time he was also the drummer for the PISSED—the band made up entirely of PE Magazine editors.  Prior to joining Profane Existence, Joel was a one half of the Arizona based Hippycore magazine and record label. Joel was also a member of the Love and Rage Network in the 90’s, help co-found the anarchist Newspaper the Blast. After receiving his PhD, Joel moved back to Arizona where he was a professor at the Norther Arizona University and remained active in the social justice community. There have been countless posts regarding Joels death posted on his Facebook Page, giving a good picture of how many lives Joel touched:

http://www.facebook.com/olson.joel

Here is the announcement we received earlier today regarding Joel’s death:

Dear Comrades:

It has come to my attention that the esteemed activist, writer, and academic Joel Olson passed away while on sabbatical in Europe.

Joel was Associate Professor in the Department of Politics and International Affairs at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona, where he specialized in political theory. A noted expert on racial politics and extremist ideologies, he was the author of _The Abolition of White Democracy_ (University of Minnesota Press, 2004) as well as numerous articles and reviews. Joel was working on a second book, entitled _American Zealot: Fanaticism and Democracy in the United States_, at the time of his death.

Drumming for PISSED, Newcastle, England

During the 1990s Joel was involved with Love and Rage Revolutionary Anarchist Federation and later went on to form Bring the Ruckus! He was a well-known figure in the anti-racist and pro-immigrant movement in Arizona.

Details surrounding Joel’s sudden and very untimely death remain unclear, but it goes without saying that his comrades in the North American Anarchist Studies Network, and throughout the North American and international anarchist community, will very much miss him, and we give our love, sympathy, and solidarity to his family, friends, and loved ones during this most difficult time.

2 THE SHAME – The Plan (Studio Sessions) CD demo

The Shame

The ShameThis little gem of a demo arrived a little while ago and it’s gotten quite a bit of airtime in the PE offices. THE SHAME are a three piece band from Tulsa, OK that features PE alumni Chad Malone (BROTHER INFERIOR,ASSEMBLY OF GOD, LARKIN, BRING DOWN THE HAMMER) on guitar and vocals.  Musically and message-wise, THE SHAME are influenced by UK ’82 Oi and streetpunk bands pulling influences from the likes of classic SHAM 69, BLITZ and THE OPPRESSED.  Generally speaking, this isn’t exactly the style of music PE is known to cover, but many of us did grow up in a time before punk split up into a million sub-genres and listening to this stirs up some nostalgia for the olden days. Lyrics give a nod to the politics historically associated with working class roots of this particular music genre, all the while saying it’s OK to have a pint and a good laugh with your friends. I would really like to see this put out on vinyl and will be sure to buy one if it does! (Dan)

6 Dan’s Column

DanSPOILER ALERT!
Contains information about upcoming PE releases!

PE’s received a lot of negative flak in certain cesspools of the internet lately and I’m going to use this opportunity to call out some of the bullshit and clarify what’s been going on.

As many of you already know, Profane Existence printed magazine is no longer going to be published. The magazine has survived the last few year with an all volunteer labor force and has faced declining subscriptions, distro and “newsstand” sales and advertising income, while facing major price hikes from the printers and Post Office. No matter how we changed the format, we’ve found that it impossible to come close to a break-even proposition. With the number of visitors on our web site surpassing the number of readers of the magazine—and with the web site being a fraction of the cost of a published magazine—it’s a no brainer to put our content online.  Thus we can reach even more people faster, easier and stop throwing away money and resources on a dying format. It sucks we can no longer provide free copies to prisoners (who usually can’t access the internet), but we haven’t exactly been rolling in donations to the prisoner fund either. Everyone who subscribed after September 2010 have received a credit for the amount at PE distro. People who subscribed before that date, I’m afraid you’ve made an involuntary donation to the cause of anarchy. Oh boo hoo, it’s been happening to me for the last 25 years!  If you really have a problem with that, then contact me through this blog.
