Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

a0634628684_2All the way from Eau Claire Wisconsin comes Accusation 3 dudes playing some very fast and spastic crust/d-beat. A total of  11 crust filled tracks.  Now this is something that I can see someone sending PROFANE.  This is right up all your punx alley, if you like WARTORN, DRESDEN or for some reason AMEBIX this is for you. Heavy guitars and pounding drums with angry and chirpy vocals raining over this release.  This reminds me of the KRANG demo cassette a couple years ago with the duel back and forth female and male vocals. Except these are all dudes.  So I really don’t know what else to say but this is a self-released cassette by the band which is really cool and it’s on a red cassette and professionally printed.  Check out there Bandcamp for a FREE download of this entire album and while your there might as well download there demo. a3594995310_2Wow every time I get something to review from PROFANE I never really think I’ll get a pop punk. But hey sounds like it.  MURMURS hail from Seattle WA and play a very nice version of pop punk like DUN BIN HAD, and INFECTED. This is a re-release on ABORTED SOCIETY RECORDS.  A total of  8 tracks my favorite song off this release is “Lil’ American” singing and falling down at it’s best.  Also some of the lyrical content actually are about things that matter in life instead of all partying and drinking.  The singer has a very recognizable voice to him that makes it sound very gritty and emotional.  “Lunar Wolf” another amazing catchy song with some nice sing along parts all in all a very solid release.  Go to there bandcamp and give it a listen.  Awesome cover art for this album pro printed cassette tape (XbezerkerX)

a1569896901_10Nunhex are a brutal thrash band from Miami.  This 4 song cassette I believe is there first release. This cassette starts off very fast with “Tyrant Twerp” 2 minutes of blistering thrash with a very D-beat drum set.  The vocals throughout this whole album are very angry and very scratchy. This dude is obviously pissed off at something or someone. All the songs are very short and to the point until you et to the last song “False Negative”  then you have 3 minutes off pissed off vocals, heavy thrashing guitar and d-beat drums all very well put together towards the end of the song it’s some noisy crap but other then that. All in all a very solid first release wouldn’t mind seeing and or hearing more of these guys.  I received a pretty big sized decent patch and pin with this also the cassette is pro printed and see through green. 0 Stinging Nettles & Dandelions: Towards a Delicous Decolonization of (A) Settler Diet through Re-wilding

  • July 5, 2013
  • by Comrade Black

by Comrade Black Comrade1e

I have decided I want to get a tattoo of some Dandelions and Stinging Nettles, because:

a) both are considered weeds (unwanted species, pests)
b) they are super healthy, both as foods, and as medicinesc) both grew wild in the areas I grew up as well as in the Cascadian bio-region where I currently live
d) Nettles are good for arthritis, which I have a bad form of called Ankelosing Spondalitis (AS), as well as Fibramialgia which Nettles are helpful with
e) both are invasive species brought over from Europe by whites, which as awesome and healthy and healing as they can be, they are pushing out native species and taking over, so I think it is a good metaphor as a settler person who is anti-colonial.

I have also been thinking that white settlers should be harvesting our traditional foods and medicines which are now invasive here, these plants are our heritage, and thus are attuned to our bodies so they make sense for us to consume. But also because by harvesting them we could be helping to push back their spread if enough of us were doing it; and in doing so we would be helping native species to thrive which are the traditional foods and medicines for the indigenous people (both human and non-human people) who have always existed here. I think it is important to have an anti-colonial analysis when engaging with practices like wild harvesting or rewilding, as to not perpetuate colonialism. I remember a Lekwungen woman who teaches about traditional foods and the importance of Camas to her people, saying that now when she teaches settlers she tries to ensure not to teach them too much. She wants them to understand how and why it is so important, so they will respect the plant and not harm them or even to help protect them from invasives; but has learned the hard way if you teach too much people will go take them all and there won’t be any for Lekwungen people to harvest.

Learning about local ecology is important if we are going to both decolonize and to reduce our impact on the land, but I think we need to start leaving the native plants for the natives as much as possible. If you are going to harvest native species, consider finding ways in which that action will directly benefit the people who’s lands you are occupying. Examples of this could be to give a large portion of your harvest to them, especially if you know someone who is unable to harvest themselves do to time constraints or illness and disability, and of course if you do harvest native species don’t take too much so the plants can regenerate. If we are taking this knowledge on how to harvest and identify local species, we need to be giving back to those who gave us that knowledge, those who’s lands we are occupying. It is far past time we began to give back and quit taking. Settlers have taken their lands, their children to put in residential schools and foster homes, their traditions and parts of their spirituality; far more than was ever offered. If we ever hope to change our relationship to this land and the people who are still struggling to resist colonization, we need to quit taking and not act like settler colonists any more.

One way to start is by taking back what is ours instead. We live in a society where governments spend billions on war, prisons, police, and surveillance, while people starve in the streets, meanwhile there is a salad growing in your front yard, down the street and in every park and roadside on this continent. And it is waiting for you to go pick it so other species can thrive!

551545_558133587544350_660709602_nSome of the most gritty low-fi sounds you’ll hear these days and what an amazing sound it is. So dark and gloomy this piece of wax is.  From the beginning of the A-side to the end of the B-Side this will have you wondering what this amazing music is and where can you get it.  SO this record was put out on HOLY TERROR records and if you’re not familiar with that label you must be living under a rock.  Holy Terror is DWID’s label from INTEGRITY.  He puts out a bunch of good music that you would not normally hear.  BROKEN CROSS is a one man band that had a demo come out and this is that demo on vinyl plus a couple new tracks. If you’re into OEDE, VVLAD, or VERMAPYRE this is the album for you 5 tracks that you’ll never forget. • · Columns

Hey world. So, I don’t normally write columns, but I’ve been feeling strongly about this for a while. I’ve been vegan for almost 19 years and while some of it has to do with discovering P.E., this rant isn’t based around that. After getting P.E. #64 in the mail and reading Dan’s opening bit, I was re-inspired. Dawn(my wife) and I lived in different cities for a while, but now live out in the woods. We don’t get a good show this way often and there’s no scene. Years ago we saw Atakke(Sam is from this area), but missed Kylesa. Last October I talked a local promoter into getting Phobia to play a local DIY space. It was great.

While I do miss shows, punk is about much more. Screaming for change is one thing, but working on it is better. Am I preaching? You decide. I’m not going to say go vegan(just do it already), but there are so many reasons to do it. Also, buy and eat whole foods. Avoid packaging. Every packaged food has a long history and a carbon footprint. Just buy locally grown foods and grow your own if you can. Little things like turning things(lights, t.v.s, amps, etc.) off when not in use helps. Ride a bike or walk when you can. Don’t buy things you don’t need and buy local when possible. Reuse everything. Canning jars are great for canning, then storage and then drinking coffee, tea juice. That plastic bag you get produce in? Wash it and use it again.

We’re punks for a reason. We just don’t fit in. Let’s make the “norms” realize we’re good folks and that we have good qualities and aren’t just eye candy. Bring your own shopping bag and reuse everything to death. Also, sew your favorite label or band logo on it and hand out the most recent issue of P.E. to a curious passerby.

While I was gathering paper and cardboard for a bonfire recently, I dumped the packing material out of the box from the last batch of review goodies I was sent quite a while ago and this cassette fell out. While the fire was great, I felt like a total jerk for missing this. By the looks of the cassette and logo I would have expected this to be heavy crust, but I was pleasantly surprised. While I am a big fan of that style, this was a nice surprise. This cassette has seven songs of blazing hardcore that I could swear came straight from the mid 90s even though they’ve only been around for a little over a year. The drums beat furiously pushing the wall of rage created by the guitars and bass. Adding to the mayhem are deep sociopolitical lyrics that are so well written and inspiring. I have to admit that the second time through these songs I was so moved I had to pull out my guitar and shred. By the time the time you read this, there’s a possibility that MASSEXIT will be close to putting out another fine release. I can’t wait! Even though the recording was pretty rough, this is one of the best releases I’ve heard in a very long time(and comes with a sticker). Honest and very well done. (Jake) http://massexitpunk.com/

0 Misozuke – fermented tofu “cheese”

  • I’ve made this once and it was totally delicious and creamy. You’ll definitely need patience for this recipe, but it’s totally worth it! I took the recipe directly from the site http://www.rauom.com/2011/05/24/tofu-misozuke-recipe/
  • I tried half with white miso and half with brown and they were both really good! (Jake)
  • We’ll need sugar, sake, yellow miso, and firm tofu.
  • Wrap a tofu block in 2-3 layers of paper towels & set a dish on top of the tofu block and let it dry out for 1-2 hours.
  • For each half block of tofu, prepare a marinade spread of 1/2 cup of miso, 1 tablespoon each of sake and sugar. Mix well.
  • Wrap tofu in cheesecloth and smear marinade on all sides. How much of the marinade should be used is up to you and your salt preference.
  • Line a storage container with 2-3 layers of paper towels, place tofu block on top, cover and refrigerate.
  • Change paper towels every month (SEE UPDATE BELOW) – the paper towels will become really wet, yet the tofu will not be any dryer because enzymes in the miso are breaking down the soy proteins and generating water. Chemistry!

Back in December, Harvest King Records released one hell of a compilation containing a nice assortment of bands over 20 tracks. Aside from ROYAL RED BRIGADE, KLEINS96, TOMORROW STARTS TODAY and THE JUMP OFF(who all have two), each band has one track to showcase their goods. Something to look forward to is the diversity in sound that everybody brings to the table unlike some comps that give a handful of bands all banging out tunes that, in reality, could all be the same band. The range on this disc hit punk rock, hardcore, indie, country/folk and more. Even better…you can listen to it for free! That’s right, free. So, go to Harvest King’s bandcamp site and check it out. Then, after realizing you like all the bands, order all the albums! (Jake)
