Dawn and I recently had a craving for baba ganouj and looked through almost every cookbook on our shelf until we came across our very reliable and underrated copy of The Lowfat Jewish Vegetarian Cookbook. Though it says vegetarian, every recipe is vegan doesn’t rely on meat and cheese substitutes. Anyway, here’s our modified version of their recipe:

1 large eggplant, cut lengthwise 1/2″ thick

olive oil for brushing

sea salt

3 TBSP tahini

3 TBSP lemon juice

3 cloves garlic, crushed

1 TBSP olive oil

1/4 C chopped fresh parsley (optional)

sea salt and pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 350F

Brush eggplant slices with olive oil on both sides, sprinkle with a little salt and place flat on baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes or until tender. Place in food processor and blend until smooth. Use as a dip, spread on sandwiches or just eat wit a spoon if no one is looking.

Consisting of members from well known crust bands Stormcrow (Tony and Brian) and Sanctum (Nick). Femacoffin from Oakland, California keep the original heavy crusty death metal approach to their music like their previous bands. Through the doomy hecatomb, there are strains of bands like Bolt Thrower and Misery. The term ‘warcrust’ has been knocked about for this kind of Bolt Thrower styled crust, which bands like Last Legion Alive, Warmaster and of course Stormcrow and Sanctum play so well. I personally don’t care what it’s called, I just love real heavy well played filthy musick so I could listen to this on repeat all day. These are crusty punks playing death metal but with a political vent which for me gives it the extra kick in the arse. The band themselves have tagged it on Bandcamp as “punk-crust-death metal-decay-sadness” which I think describes the sound quite well.

I can’t wait for their five song cassette demo which is in the works, which I’m sure will be as heavy as a ton of bricks… doomy crust ridden bricks that is. (SFitzgerald)

3 Fatum – Time Passes To The Dark

It’s great to finally hear the new album from Moscow’s dark crust/stenchcore band Fatum. Thick dirty bass, guttural echos and an eternal sense of dread. The band have progressed to a slightly more metallic sound since their last release ‘Skverna’. But still keep the heavy influences of Antisect and Axegrinder fully intact. Tracks three and four ‘Time is running out’ part I and II is their take on Antisect’s ‘Into the Darkness’. So they wear their influence as always very openly on their sleeves, in every sense of the word.

Going since 2007 their sound has gotten better and better. If you like your music dark and heavy this band is for you. They have a split in the works next with fellow stenchcore heads Cancer Spreading from Italy. They are currently looking for DIY labels who want to get involved with it’s release. ‘Time Passes to The Dark’ is released by Drunk With Power Records (SFitzgerald)

Hey folks – it’s been a while since I put forth a proper column. No, I mean a long fucking time. For the one or two of you who actually enjoy my writing and maybe even look forward to one of these columns, I apologize sincerely. I also apologize for this one, because it’s not going to be very in depth, political, or long.

For some reason over the last few (many?) months, my heart just hasn’t been into writing as much as it has been in the past. I don’t know if I’m just in a dry spell or what, but I can’t even force myself to write anything of value (I find forcing it hinders the final product). I’ve had my writers block periods before, but never anything like this. I can’t even bring myself to do reviews like I once did. I’m hoping that now that spring has sprung, and I can enjoy good weather and going out of my house every once in a while, I can be inspired once again.

And it’s not like I have a lack of things to rant about! Every day, it seems like there’s yet another injustice brought upon the planet/my back yard/the natural world/the animal kingdom/etc that cries for my valuable opinion (haha)! I don’t even know where to begin anymore!

Anyway – again, this is just a short one to let you know that I’m still here, still pissed, and I’ll be back with much more regularity in the near future.

Organize and Arise along with Profane Existence will be setting up shop at Cause Spirits and Soundbar in Uptown Minneapolis to celebrate 25 years of MISERY as they play two gigs. One all ages show and a later 21+ show. Needless to say, this will be a record release show for DESPISE and WAR//PLAGUE, along with many other bands.

Once again, Rob and Matt at Aborted Society Records has managed to release something that is exceptionally good! ADELIT@S play excellent melodic punk rock with a very strong emphasis on the socio/politcal theme. It’s intelligent, straight forward and very pleasing to the ear. This band offers much insight into our world and the many afflictions that plague this place. It’s truthful and the catchy songs bring an involuntary action to your fist being raised…and it’s very cathartic! There’s some great lyrical content here with the dual female/male vocals…for example “Stop talking to me about the laws – this nation is illegal“…simple, but very effective. I love what this band is doing. To some degree, I affiliate a few of the bands nuances to Los Crudos, and that’s due to them singing in Spanish and criticizing the countries failed efforts at seeing “illegals” as first class citizens. There’s so much more this band has to offer. So I highly recommend you get off your rump, if you haven’t already and add this to your collection. (Leffer)

0 WARTORN Iconic Nightmare LP – Limited Copies Available

We have a limited number of the new WARTORN Iconic Nightmare LP on Southern Lord. Heavy weight vinyl. This record has been greating (well earned) great reviews all over the place, like this one from Thrashpunx.com:

If you haven’t already noticed, Southern Lord has decided to add some bands to their roster recently that stylistically fall outside of their norms. In the past few months we have seen them reach out to the crusties with releases from KROMOSOM, MARTYRDOD, and FROM ASHES RISE. Now they offer up this delicious slab. WARTORN hail from Wisconsin USA and have had a number of releases over the past 4 or so years and today approach their craft with both precision and sheer brute force. Strong soaring melodies pair with crushing metal-laced hardcore riffs evoking both later HHIG and HELLSHOCK. The bass is so punishing and thick and is contrasted against the crisp snare drum hits. I gotta say that one of the things I like most about this are the juxtapositions that are all over it. There are guttural vocals set against Bitty’s clearer shouting, and the drummer sounds firmly rooted in a punk sound as opposed to so many bands in this genre that have more of a death-metal approach to the drums.

Since I mentioned the genre, there is something else that I gotta get out here… There are many people out there who hold that crustcore bands today are all in some kind of rut. They claim that there is little originality, but I think that there are many bands out there today that just know what they are into and want to play in that style while adding their own flavor to it all. Some bands do this very well and develop their own particular sound over time and some bands just don’t. Conductors and orchestras have been re-recording Beethoven for over a hundred years. Were they attempting to do something new? Not usually. They just wanted to play in their style and do it particularly well. Can you add your own touches? Of course, and why not, but I bet if you ask, they would say they just wanted to treat the material with respect and a sense of integrity. That sums up how I feel about many of the crust bands today. These are people who have found something that they love, something that speaks to them and gives them a voice to speak as well. One of my favorite bands over the past year has been INFERNOH from Sweden. Straight up ANTI-CIMEX worship but done so well and with such conviction and it totally rules. Anyway, what I am getting at is that originality and innovation within a genre does not equal great music. WARTORN sound fucking great without having to reinvent anything. They know who they are, what they want to say and they fucking kill it with this release.

Iconic Nightmare has a razor-sharp metallic production with a huge sound that is really leaps and bounds ahead of their previous offerings. This LP shows WARTORN jumping from haunting and beautiful intros into savage onslaught, thrashing, chugging riffs lead into dark melodies without ever missing a beat or feeling disjointed. Southern Lord has delivered yet another classic record with this masterful album from WARTORN.

0 BREAKING: Daniel McGowan Back in Prison

We got word late yesterday that Daniel McGowan was told he wouldn’t be issued a pass to go to work the next day. According to his keepers at the halfway house, this denial came at the direction of the Bureau of Prisons (BOP). When he followed up, Daniel was told that it wasn’t merely a denial of a work pass, but a restriction on all movement. When asked if that meant federal marshals were coming to get him the next day, the halfway house administrators told him they didn’t know.

The state, and its for-profit halfway house minions, were clearly in collusion. This is just another way that opacity is used to mindfuck folks left to twist in the wind, not knowing what the future holds.

From our understanding, the reason for his re-imprisonment is directly related to an article Daniel recently wrote for the Huffington Post. An attorney with the Center for Constitutional Rights has been to visit Daniel at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Once we know more, we’ll pass the information on.

For now, take time to send Daniel a card or letter. Let him know that regardless of how the state treats him, we have his back.

0 WARTORN – Domestic Terrorist 7″

Chances are that if you read Profane Existence, that you’ve heard of WARTORN. In fact, I’ll bet that you’re a fan as well, because, well, you’re only human and these legends from Wisconsin are a crust force not to be fucked with. This is the third installment of the Profane Existence Limited Edition Singles Series and these two tracks are worth every cent. Side A, Domestic Terrorist, starts of rolling in a slow dirge. Long, drawn out and dirty. After a few minutes, one of the guitars takes off in a Wisconsin style d-beat fury, immediately followed by the rest of the band. Shit’s in high gear now and doesn’t let up until the final note with Bitty howling his trademark short sharp lyrics. The B side, Under Oath, doesn’t even give you a second to adjust your butt-flap or open another bottle of rotgut before you’re assaulted with a tidal wave size wall of guitars being pushed ahead by manic drumming. The riffing on this side strays from d-beat into some nice mid 80s thrash and is rounded out by some blazing solos that’ll have you playing air guitar like you thought you were Hot Lixx Hulahan! Just like everything else WARTORN has done, I give this a 10 out of 10. You can buy them individually for $7.77 or all four for $25. They come in red, black, white or clear vinyl. (Jake)
