Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

Despite the inculcation of helplessness within each there remains great power. Ill at ease with such makes us ill. Learn to see the hand that feeds for what it is. You’ve been fooled if you think you’ve got no power. Refuse to be reduced to a consumer you’re a human being. Define yourself by more than wealth. Define yourself as a human. You don’t need what you’re being sold. Bend your knee to no authority but your own mind. You have the power to avoid the gilded trap. Avarice is what you’re conditioned for. Break the mold discover what’s really valuable to you.

0 Seitan (wheat meat)

  • October 18, 2012
  • by backwoodsvegan
  • · Crusty Collectivist Cooking Project · Recipes Section

Hey folks! This week’s recipe is for a very basic seitan. It’s a good starting point for many different flavors and styles and can be used in a variety of ways. Plus, the liquid left over can be used as a soup broth!

2 medium onions, chopped

5 cloves of garlic, chopped

3 large carrots, chopped into 1/2 pieces

In a large pot, boil 5 quarts of water, add onions, garlic and carrots(feel free to add additional flavors like celery, parsley, etc.) and continue to boil. While this is cooking, prepare seitan.

2 Cups vital wheat gluten

2 TBSP ground cumin

2 tsp ground black pepper

2 tsp sea salt

2 tsp onion powder

2 tsp garlic powder

1 Cup water or broth

1/2 soy sauce

Mix dry ingredients together and wet ingredients in a separate bowl. Slowly add wet to dry while mixing with a large spoon. When dough is too tough to mix, squeeze together with hands. Once it becomes a solid mass, kneed for five minutes and roll into a log and slice into medallions. Immediately submerge in boiling broth for 45 minutes. Place a colander in a large bowl and drain liquid. This can later be used as a soup or gravy base. Though you’ll have to separate te seitan from the boiled carrots, onions and garlic, it’s worth it. The veggies can also be used further in soup or pot pies or whatever. Once the seitan cools it can be stored in freezer bags and frozen for a fairly long time. Remember to add different herbs and spices to suit the dish you are using it for. Since it’s close to Halloween, we’ll call this mock zombie. Cheers! And remember, if you have to eat zombie, avoid eating the brain!!!

Ready to get your asshole blown away by some no frill straightforward Grind.   This 2 piece band hail from the sewers of Minneapolis to pulverize your ear drums with some short but sweet morsels of blast beats that are put together so you can actually listen to it.  Unlike some of those so called grind bands out there that use drum machines this drummer is insane behind the kit the faster the better for him.  Not to leave the vocals out with screams, growls and groans. With song titles like “Mystery Grind Theater” “Macho Madness” and “Blast The Crusher”, to name a few nothing over the top with titles or images they let the music speak for itself. I personally love all the wrestling references  they have and logos they do.  If you like grind in the ways of BACKSLIDER and Faction X Disaster then you’ll love these guys always touring the Midwest look for these guys best served live. 1 Pad Thai

  • · Crusty Collectivist Cooking Project · Recipes Section

This week’s recipe comes from Joe Fisher at http://dachaproject.com/ in Western New York. He’s a baker, a lover of sustainability and all things doom metal. Oh, and an all around good guy. We don’t have a picture this week so you’ll just have to make this dish to have a look at it. Enjoy!

Easy Vegan Pad Thai (aka, you can make this from a average grocery store!)

This is a two serving receipe that starts with:

6 oz. rice noodles, (the thick wide ones)

Sauce
3 T. fresh lime juice
3 T. catsup
1 T. brown sugar
1/4 T. soy sauce

—-
3/4 lb. mung bean sprouts

3 T. peanut or vegetable oil
3-4 garlic cloves, minced and pressed
1 T. minced fresh chile or 1 1/2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
2 cups thinly sliced carrots
1 block tofu cubed and lightly browned,
2/3 cup chopped peanuts
6-8 scallions, chopped, about 1 cup
Small peice of ginger minced very fine
Small handful of Cilanro or fresh Lemongrass

After bringing water to boil in a covered pot, blanch the mung bean
spouts by dipping in the boiling water for 30 seconds. Set aside to
drain.

When the water returns to a boil, stir in the rice noodles and cook
for 3-5 minutes until tender but firm. Drain, then rinse in cool water
and set aside to drain again.

In a small bowl mix the sauce ingredients.

Prepare the other ingredients. Then heat oil for stir fry in a wok or
large skillet, add the garlic and chile and swirl in the oil for a
moment before adding the carrots and stir frying them for a
minute. Push the carrots to the side and add the tofu tofu. Then pour
in the sauce and stir everything together. Add the
drained noodles and mung sprouts and toss, then stir in peanuts and
scallions. Flip a couple more times under high-heat and you are done!

Approximately 15 poems will be featured in bound for Glory Magazine, a Hamilton Ontario based arts and literary publication, as well they will be published in a contest anthology, which will include last years featured poems as well.

All authors whose poems are featured will receive a copy of bound for glory.
This years top three prizes include a one of a kind hand bound version of the anthology as well as a copy of Nyki’s own anthology.Again,

Submissions are to be sent to freenyki.now@gmail.com

While we reserve the one time privilege of publishing submitted work in both the magazine and poetry anthology, the author retains all ownership/copy-right over all that they contribute

All poems are considered by Nyki, names of the authors are removed prior to consideration, and while this contest’s coordinators cannot afford to award every contributor a prize, every poem is valuable and a winner in Nyki’s eyes (she even asked that we try to refrain from terms like ‘winners’).

Please do know that every poem serves to brighten Nyki’s day while she struggles through the dark day of prison to get her freedom back.

10 The D.I.Y. moral compass…and you

I was once criticized as being a capitalist for selling my own silk screened patches for 25 cents. It was amazing how well defined and elaborate the PC scene was when I grew up in punk community during the early 90’s. It’s so silly…the term PC. I mean, this is the most bureaucratic term out there, and there were folks in the punk realm wearing it on their sleeve. Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of our ethos? This attempt at free thought and self-empowerment felt threatened due to this approach and in the process, alienated many.

BUT…it’s this truth and honesty we strive for in our ideals, and it’s how we perceive a genuine universal agreement among ourselves and our peers. “Fight the system”, “Through unity comes strength”, “The only good fascist is a dead one” you get the idea. Even that last comment is fascist on its own. So I feel we’ve honed our integrity, our honor system and the deepest and most sincere DIY ethics and practices with this “bureaucracy”, without trying to step on any toes (although, we all hold some sort of opinions on how things are done). The big picture and partial point is, we’ve come to a self-sustaining community that has benefited from our contribution of mutual assistance and cooperation. Be it, the anarcho agenda, touring bands, doing shows, Food not Bombs, the squatting community, distros, labels….the whole nine yards and with no interference from the business man…sometimes.

0 BLEEDING TONGUES This is Where Silence Comes From CD – REVIEW

  • October 5, 2012
  • by backwoodsvegan
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

The concept of this CD is just beautiful. Each song was written to celebrate the lives of people that were very close to writer(ex vocalist for RAW NERVES). He explains in the notes that admitting to one’s self that the passing of loved ones is permanent is very difficult, especially to those who don’t believe in an afterlife and that he felt he owed it to them to create these pieces to honor them. There are seven tracks in all and are instrumentals with the exception of some movie sound bites and low spoken bits. The first track was interesting in that it start with the spoken part recorded backwards and the music over it, then about three minutes in, the music stops and then it switches. The  words are normal and the music is backwards. I had a hard time hearing what they were saying, buy it might just be too many years of going to shows while not wearing ear plugs. Most of these songs are clean solo guitar with heavy use of reverb and flange with some drumming. Without knowing the theme of the album, it feels like the sound track for driving alone at night down long dark roads. It’s atmospheric with big rich tone. At times it sounded heavily influenced by newer NEUROSIS and THE VENTURES. The writing is creative and artful, great for relaxing and slipping into deep thought. $5 from Poisoned Candy Records. 0 BULLSHEEP DETECTOR – Welsh Punk Compilation 1980-84 CD – REVIEW

  • October 5, 2012
  • by thrashpunx
  • · Reviews

Anti Society records boasts an incredible catalog with titles from the likes of DOOM, ANTISECT, ANTISYSTEM, etc…basically a who’s who of the early UK punk, peace punk and crust scenes.  The label was started in 2010 by the dude who had done Rejected Records in Ireland since 1994.  This CD comp captures a sub-section of early UK punk and focuses on the Welsh punk scene from 1980 to 1984.  12 bands and 57 tracks later we’ve got ourselves quite the retrospective.  Looking, or in this case listening, back some of the early punk is far from threatening by today’s standards but the passion and the message cannot be denied.  There is something about that early punk innocence that just brings a smile to my face.  Styles of music may change and the definition of what is punk music is constantly challenged but the struggle continues and while some of the music, may, at times, sound dated the song remains the same, the message is strong and the by the song titles it’s obvious how little things have changed and by most arguments have only gotten worse.  Songs like ‘Victim’, ‘Violent City’, ‘No More Wars’, ‘Where Does Our Money Go’ are really timeless in title and subject matter and describe a world too similar to the struggles that we face in our modern lives.  Where does my tax money go?  Does it go straight to my daughters school or is it funneled into government weapons projects and ammo stock piling?  Stand acts include CORRUPTION who play some of the most aggressive music on this comp with vocals that push for more of a scream than just the angry shout that most of the bands employ.  The guitars have a good fuzzy distortion to them and the tempos are some of the fastest amongst their peers.  CLASSIFIED PROTEST aren’t afraid of the distortion either and are really kind of reminiscent of SHATTERED FAITH or some of the SoCal punk of the same era.  ARMISTICE is another stand out band with their somewhat uniqueand punky sound on tracks like the simply titled ‘Anarchy’.  Its not all doom and gloom, bands like NO LABEL offer some hope in lyrics and call for the punx to make a stand and declare that ‘Anarchy’s Right for You and Me’.   REALITY ATTACK attack with a dose of reality and a fired up “set” that is probably my favorite of the second disc only to be followed closely by the less chaotic but equally menacing SECLUDED.  Other bands on this two CD comp are:  ABNORMAL, CONDEMNED, DEATH PATROL, IMPACT, NO LABEL, PSEUDO SADISTS, and SKULL ATTACK.  The packaging is pretty cool as the set comes with a booklet with a lot of color photos of all the punx looking punk and copies of many of the bands’ hand drawn logos. This is essential for the punk rock historian or completist that we all know.  For me this was a killer treat and I am stoked I got my hands on a copy of this.  So many good bands and songs are pulled together here that might have otherwise been lost to faded memories, bad cassette copies or extremely limited and obscure 7”s.  “Old Punk Never Die…They Just Stand In The Back!!!”   (Josh Mosh)
