Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

    “Sermon for the Bootlickers”

Despite the inculcation of helplessness within each there remains great power. Ill at ease with such makes us ill. Learn to see the hand that feeds for what it is. You’ve been fooled if you think you’ve got no power. Refuse to be reduced to a consumer you’re a human being. Define yourself by more than wealth. Define yourself as a human. You don’t need what you’re being sold. Bend your knee to no authority but your own mind. You have the power to avoid the gilded trap. Avarice is what you’re conditioned for. Break the mold discover what’s really valuable to you.

Here is a brand new release on ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES. With them putting this album out your thinking man this will be awesome Jello doesn’t put out crap records correct?  Well for the most part you’re right.  Very low-fi gritty fast spaztastic punk rock on this record.  Sometimes you will wish the recording wasn’t so shitty ut that adds to the record.  At first when this arrived and I read the sticker on the cover I got super excited. “In 1965, this former Motown backing band was left for dead in the swamps of Baton Rouge”. With that being on the cover I thought it would be some sweet ass soul/blues type music. But nope I was sadly surprised. There is a total of 13 songs 10 of them which are there own and 2 covers. “Nervous Breakdown” and  “Bad Man”.  Other then that this is something I could see a smaller record label putting out, but hey if a bigger DIY label wants to do hell yea. Plus check out this creepy cover looks like something out of Donnie Darko. Check it out for yourself (XbezerkerX)

Well here is a new release from ASAIN MAN RECORDS featuring the two members of the BIRTHDAY SUITS, Paddy from DILLINGER 4 and ASIAN MAN himself MIKE PARK.  Here we have 8 tracks of spastic and harsh punk kind of like a garage sort of punk. Each song barely a minute long except one which is exactly a minute long other then that what can I really say about this power house group all individually are good at there own bands.  Maybe this was just a little fun random thing to do but they should stick to what they know best and that is there original bands.  Not a band collectible record just to own if there is nothing else to buy at the record store or online. Thrash for all you thrashers. This 3 piece thrash band hail from Indy and play……wait for it……thrash metal.  Not an all around band cassette tape again by REALITY IS A CULT, this label just keeps putting out little gems one at a time.  This cassette has a total of 8 song, in the vein of IN DEFENCE with there party and humorous lyrical content.  I’ve had the advantage of booking these guys when they came to Minneapolis the second time and there live show isn’t half bad, so I recommend checking this cassette out and if they are coming to your town make sure to check them out. Fart noises into a microphone=epic, and singing about a Big Mac is sweet. Also follow the links to listen and download this cassette.  One final thought PIZZAFACE.  (XbezerkerX)

Another nice slab of wax per REALITY IS A CULT this 7 inch is a little slice of heaven in a 7 inch sleeve.  PARASITIC TWINS hail from Indy playing fast and catchy punk/hardcore, more on the punk side of things very catchy guitar and vocals on “Greedy Mitts” “Lily White” is another amazing track with powerful vocals and screeching guitar. Time to flip this over to the B-Side.  The B-side offers up two more tracks with tuning the guitar as the intro to “Blowhard” is kind of weird but artists are weird right?  But the lyrics are on point for this song a sarcastic snotty anthem to how most of us really feel.  It appears that each side was recorded 5 months apart from each other and with that the B-Side sounds like a better recording to me but that’s my opinion check out this release for yourself.  Plus I got a free mini zine with this release maybe if you order one you might be as lucky as I was. 0 MAPS TO THE OTHER SIDE by Sascha Altman DuBrul (book review)

  • August 13, 2013
  • by PigBastard
  • · Reviews

COMPLETE TITLE: Maps to The Other Side: the adventures of a bipolar cartographer

topics included in this book:
seed saving, mental health advocacy, freight trains, squatter lifestyle, biodiesel mechanics

…
Monsanto, Hormel, Del Monte.  Three easily recognized names in most grocery stores, and yet what do these companies really represent to you?  To some people, it’s just the biggest food companies in America today.  To conspiracy minded people, these 3 companies represent an attempt toward enslavement of the human race.  The author of this book and many other people would go with the second one.  Indeed, such innocent activities as seed saving, organic gardening, and CSA (community supported agriculture) are revolutionary acts in the age of GMOs and mono-crop agriculture on the industrial level.  And the food you grow from seed tastes better than what’s in the grocery store too!
Another main focus of this book is about dealing with bipolar disorder in this crazy world and accounts from the authors own life of insane manias and bone-chilling depressions.  This could be very helpful to those who deal / suffer with the same issues.
Influenced by the author’s own counter-culture (see punk) roots and mental frame, Sascha DuBrul has become seed-saving revolutionary and mental health activist.  Along with help from other comrades, he has established two organizations in the San Francisco / Oakland / Berkeley area to help enrich the communities he is a part of.  The first is the Icarus Project, a peer to peer forum for those dealing with / suffering from emotional and mental difficulties.  The other is BASIL (Bay Area Seed Interchange Library), dedicated to the preservation of organic bio-diversity and open pollinated fruits / veggies.  Members of BASIL also partake in urban guerilla gardening, and inspire others around the world.  Sascha Altman DuBrul has been a regular contributor to zines such as Slug & Lettuce, and played bass on NYC band Choking Victim’s first EP Crack Rock Steady.

no-statik-prank122-194Two incredible new jams from NO STATIK here, first you have “No Hospice” A nice guitar and drum intro leads into very aggressive vocals. I’m always a fan of a female fronted hardcore/punk band. The lyrics of this song are very hauntingly true to everyone and how they feel entitled to everything they want because they think they deserve it. Really there are few people who actually get what they deserve.  The B-Side to this album is titled “Clean Swift Sunshine” very well put together raw and angry track, with pounding drums and fast guitar this little slice of heaven on wax is a must own for any fan of this band or any fan of good music. Check it out, also if you’re lucky you’ll get it on gold wax. (XbezerkerX)

A brand new release for New Jerseys’ NIGHT BIRDS. If you haven’t heard of this band yet, then you my friend are missing out.  You might say that there is a surf resurgence coming back if more bands could play as well as these guys. The first track is a nice instrumental surf song that sets the pace for the entire album.  “Born To Die In Suburbia” is the title track off this record and it is a nice gem of a song spastic guitar and vocals makes you think of what punk rock should still be and sound like. Personally my favorite track is “Maimed For The Masses” being a huge wrestling fan and this track is dedicated to the hardcore legend Mick Foley.  Fast and catchy vocals and loud guitar and drumming on this track makes this amazing.  Plus all lyrics about his real life in the wrestling ring is awesome. GRAVE MISTAKE RECORDS put this out and I suggest you go support this label.  I wrote in a blog I used to do that this label cannot put out a bad record and that still stands in my opinion. First I wanted to be clear that this review is for the 2nd edition(the first edition is pictured here), but for some reason a good quality photo was hard to find. The second edition includes 20+ more pages of new material. Whether or not you ever hung out in train years or hopped a train, this is a very entertaining read that due, to the zine format, never drags out. There’s also a ton of photos of hobos, bums and tramps(and little guides to tell the difference) and the graffiti on trains done by them and rail yard employees. A constant theme throughout is the real identity of the freightcar graffiti artist who came up with the Bozo Texino tag. Lots of speculation in interviews and letters written by current and past rail yard employees and clips from old train industry magazines. It’s a fun read that you don’t really have to do in any particular order for it to be informative and interesting. Perfect backpack book. (Jake)

0 WHY WE DRIVE book (review)

  • August 8, 2013

FULL TITLE: Why We Drive: The Past, Present, and Future of Automobiles in America, by Andy Singer.

“The automobile by its very nature is an inefficient people mover, and this inefficiency and need for space means that it creates sprawl.”  And thus the basis of what this book is about.  Andy Singer is a Minnesota resident, that takes pride in being without a vehicle for 47 years, and explains to readers why we should all attempt the same.  Via quotes, comic / cartoons, and summaries; he explains what America was like at the turn of the 1900s, and how big business and profit goals have drastically changed it for the worse.  Phenomenons such as “white flight” out of the cities and into the suburbs would have been impossible without the family car.  Singer argues that with increased emphasis on public transit and less on driving, American cities would still have lively and energetic urban cores, and also many less symptoms of air pollution, isolation, and violent crime.  With fully half of the 159 pages being comic cartoons, this book is an easy read which can appeal to anyone who makes the effort to read it.
