Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

Unofficially nominated for “Best Album of 2012 Award”!

It took a while for this record to come to the review dept of Profane Existence, and a while longer after that for this post to get reviewed, but perhaps better late than never is the fitting phrase here.  Besides, fuckers, I dont have a fucking home computer!! Anyways, fuck all the bullshit, here’s the review:

From the opening radio samples mentioning the problems dealing with the Mexican drug cartels and the corrupt politicians that unofficially support them, it becomes very apparent that this album is going to be a rewarding and highly intelligent statement from a perspective that I honestly dont have much experience with (kind of like looking through a window at someone else’s political situation).  The songs, although heavily influenced by punk rock / crust, are firmly in the sonic arena of DIY rock n roll.  Crust elements abound, such as deep gruff vokills, galloping beats, and lyrical subjects that approach an aura of political hopelessness.  The back of the record jacket sums it up best as “MOTORCHARGED CRUST N ROLL”.
OUTLAW BASTARDS come from Tijuana, of of Mexico’s cities of sin.  The lyrics are printed half in English, half en Español, and there’s an accompanying page typed in English explaining the meaning / thoughts behind each one.  Major themes are the violence / corruption caused by the drug cartels and the so-called “war on drugs”, struggles of immigrant workers (especially in USA (E.U.A.)), and thug life caused by a lack of real opportunities for impoverished youth everywhere.  The band is a 5 piece, and all play their instruments exceedingly well.  There’s plenty of intricate guitar leads / riffs, and some really shredding solos thrown in for good measure.  The bass and drums break it down a couple times to get a damn groovy mood out, and I hear at least 3 distinct voices in the songs.  The last track starts off as a doomsy crust dirge, and is one of the best, a lot of ideas are thrown into the mix.  The lyrical content is about going back to prison, and the repeating line “death, sweet mother, take me home” just couldn’t get more real, heartfelt, and grief – stricken.  There’s an acoustic song hidden after about 5 or so minutes of silence to close out the album.
Good luck finding this in a record store, you definitely wont find it in the used bin anywhere.  I recommend buying it direct from the band, and believe me it’s worth every damn penny.  Comes with a download card…

0 MISERY: THE BEGINNING EP-LP: REVIEW

  • January 27, 2014
  • by PigBastard
  • · Reviews

misery_ep_cover  The crust punk veterans from the wintry polar vortex of Minnesota have returned to release yet another great record.  This time it’s a 6 song 30 minute album that’s very loosely considered an EP.  MISERY have had the same lineup for the past 25 years now, and is unique in the fact that all members take turn at lead vocals.  Very early in the beginning, the lead vocalist left the band to pursue other options with a band from NYC.  Although this other band may arguably have a bigger reputation than MISERY, the group crumbled due to a “difference of egos”.  This new offering, aptly titled The Beginning, features the original 5-piece lineup on 1/3 of the material here.  This is the band’s second release on Seattle based Inimical Records, and is the follow up to the highly acclaimed 2xLP “From Where The Sun Never Shines”, which was put out in 2012.
The record starts with 2 brand new tunes, title track The Beginning and Armageddon.  The Beginning utilizes heavy usage of clean guitar melodies, and starts with a baby’s wails before any vocals.  Musically the song seems to describe the cleanliness of birth before the corruption we all endure from the forces leading society.  The sense of doom is palpable.  Guest singer Cassandra Schorn aka DUFF joins Jon on the vocal work, the duo trading off back and forth throughout the song.  It works really well, providing even more atmosphere to an already great tune.  Lyrical focus is the malevolent hierarchy of society, and with lines like “they’ve tainted your brain from the very first day”, it’s a clear reference to the social conditioning that is impossible not to witness.  Armageddon is the second brand new one, and is much more typical of the crust we’ve come to expect from MISERY.  Some of the guitar riffs are very reminiscent of the song Just Never Ends.  The song builds from lyrical ideas laid out by the one before it, but becomes more specific in relation to the social control of religion.  The drums (especially the tom fills) are amazing on this tune.
The middle of this record features 2 songs from the first recording session in 1988, back when they were a 5-piece.  Midnight features Al Long, for the first time on a MISERY song since he left to work with NAUSEA.  Just like the original, the music is slow and doomsy as all hell.  It’s clear that the band worked some new ideas into the mix, which gives the song an updated feel to it.  In all reality, things are just as bleak as they were back then, but instead of worrying about atomic warfare, we now must face the looming doom of enslavement of the human species.  Side B opens with New Year’s, another song originally recorded during the same session as Midnight, but which never made it to record until 1996.  Originally sung by Al, Gags takes over the vox and MISERY make it their own.  They do a damn good job, and just like Midnight, the song is different and yet the same, with better studio techniques this time around.
The last 2 songs are covers originally recorded by bands that were influential to MISERY.  First up is a cover of Lifeline by SACRILEGE.  Album closer is 3rd From the Sun, originally done by CHROME, and is the other song to feature the band as a 5-piece.  Gary makes a great performance on the drum kit in this one.
Artwork & layout by Andy Lefton of WAR // PLAGUE, PROVOKED, etc.
Recorded at House Of Misery Studio 2012.

this EP-LP is highly recommended, and you should kick your own ass if you dont buy it!

ATTENTION P.E. READERS, MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THIS ONE!
this summer, 2014, the eastern regions of Amerikkka and Canaduh will be presented with yet another great band from the UK.  The band in discussion at this particular time is CRESS, an anarchist squatter punk band from England, that had a limited yet high quality output of material in the mid 90s – early 2000s.  Perhaps you’ve heard of them, perhaps not, but I’m sure you would be interested to know they shared a split 10″ with DOOM, which should be sought out immediately, cuz its a fuckin rager!
APPALACHIAN TERROR UNIT is an incredibly talented band from W. Virginia that play a mix of thrash and crust punk, heavily influenced by SACRILEGE with the lyrical prowess of AUS – ROTTEN, BEHIND ENEMY LINES, CRASS, etc.  ATU were lucky enough last year to grace the stage with legendary CONFLICT in Chicago, and Pittsburgh (?), which must have been an incredible time.  in my opinion, one of the best on PROFANE EXISTENCE RECORDS
The tentative dates at the moment are for the month of July, starting July 2nd, and ending July 21st, more information will be provided on ATU’s facebook page, so check there.  Also you can find all sorts of recent political / social actions on their page, so definitely check that out.  This will be CRESS’ first time in the USA, so check out their music, and get with the program; they’ve got a damn good and very unique sound.  They need as much fan support as possible so that they have a good time this side of the ocean!

THIS IS WHERE YOU WILL FIND MORE INFORMATION:

Salviction 2012

by SALVICTION

Salviction 2012 cover art

SALVICTION is a new crusty metal band from Poland that incorporate cold atmospheres via keyboard and depressive melodies and harmonics into their doom metal influenced crust.  Comprised of members from previous bands such as FILTH OF MANKIND and well, other bands from Poland.  This album starts up with rhythmic industrial noises, and changes quickly into guitar and drums driven crust metal with massive amounts of depressive melodies, clean bass lines, cold atmospheric keyboards and hoarse dry throat vocals.  Incredible drum talent from Paweł Szymański is just off the wall with tom fills, time changes, and interesting tribal rhythms at times.
Songs can be minimal and melodic, then switch over to pure aggression with heavy riffage, and back to an atmospheric ambiance before even a single song has finished, making this an interesting listen that is anything but stagnant / stale.  The length of these songs ranges from 5 to 10 minutes, and allows enough time for such an organic progression within each of the compositions seem natural.  My favorite song is Killing Yourself To Live, because the drums are so complex on this one, and the lyrics are an ode to the working class in factories around the world. Lyrical topics are just as depressive as the music, and cover issues of a dying world taken from a truly misanthropic perception.  With 6 great songs in the span of 42 minutes, and past band experience, SALVICTION is a band of accomplished musicians and deserve international attention.  for fans of bands such as COUNTERBLAST, NEUROSIS, and AGRIMONIA.

0 HARD CHARGER: CHROME LORD 7”: REVIEW

  • November 26, 2013
  • by PigBastard
  • · Reviews

a1382651252_2  HARD CHARGER have been rather active in the Canadian scene for the last nearly 8 years, having released a handful of LPs, 7″s and splits.  This is their first release for the newish label Primeval Sounds, based in Quebec City Quebec.  This band wears their influences on the sleeves of their leather jackets, and one can definitely hear a ton of old school metal in the mix.
Chrome lord is 6 trax of blazing “hold em high” thrash punk with gasoline soaked vocals, galloping drums, thrash riffs galore, and really wicked guitar solos on fully half of the songs.  The string tones provide a fuzzy warmth that not enough bands use today.  They even throw in a couple multi – vocal parts for the choruses of some of the songs.  This band really knows how to bring back the good parts of past heavy metal while cutting out and throwing away the absolute crap.
Lyrical matter on this record is maybe even more varied than the music.  The album opener, Chrome Lord, is about a heavy metal giant that’s hellbent on destruction.  Doc Ellis is a song about having to work to get by in society, even though you know it’s just a pointless waste of time.  Burn the Rich is rather self – explanatory, but does have a really awesome solo to boot as well as a band chorus.  Only The Grave is a sado – masochistic nightmare (or wet dream?), a song which has a great old school guitar solo that Lynnard Skynnard on speed would’ve been proud of.  Spitting Venom has a cool time switch on the drums throwing in to a pseudo breakdown towards the end of the song before album closer “Wolves of Bedlam” fires up.  “Wolves…” is a story of a mindless zombie nation produced by too much TV and social conditioning.  It’s filled with guitar noodling for half of the one minute that it plays.
None of these songs even reach the two minute mark (although Only the Grave gets really close).  Nope, these six songs are just really great Canadian punk filled with sweet metal goodness.  It’s nice to see solos and breakdowns in this style of punk, without layering on the cheese like some others do.

This awesome record was recorded March 2013 in Fredericton New Brunswick, and then mastered by Dan @ Mammoth Sound.

0 INTERNAL ROT: S/T CD – R: REVIEW

  • November 26, 2013
  • by PigBastard
  • · Reviews

a4155841162_2  A new band from the midlands of England, INTERNAL ROT perform politically charged crust metal.  This is the band’s first release, with 5 solid as a rock songs to kill yer eardrums.  They play a style of crust that seems to becoming popular as of late.  Make noise, not music.
The CD starts with a very “crust core” approach via guitar and drums, which provides a taste of what will be blazing through the speakers for the better part of the next 20 minutes.  Dual vocals add more layers, covering death metal growls as well as the shrieking rage of grindcore.  Both guys on vox share the duties rather evenly in every one of the songs, adding some real complexity to the assault of INTERNAL ROT.  Drums keep a modern war crust beat covered in the stench of ages, but also reminds one of the milder side of grind (not as many blast beats).  The guitar and bass keep a groove on it all, and the bass especially shows how much it leads the songs with the intro for Inspired By Bullshit, a completely anti – religious assault with double bass blast beats and, of course, the trademark dual vocals.
The lyrics for Inspired by Bullshit are taken from real world experience of watching drug addicts become religious zealots in order to clean their shit up.  These new “warriors of christ” are just as dangerous on religion as they were on drugs, but now they feel justified in their actions.  Yet they are still weak, because they have to resort to a book to get off the drugs, instead of finding strength within themselves.  As an American, I see this bullshit every day I walk the city streets or ride the bus in Minneapolis.  The political song Internal Rot is about how political corruption makes the system rot from the inside out until nothing is left but a weak façade, ready to crumble at the slightest kick.
Another stand out lyric / song is ep title song “Wel – Fair State”, a tirade about people that abuse the welfare system (such as the Dole in UK), by declaring themselves invalids or unable to work, and make a career out of government handouts, instead of trying to improve themselves so that they can be completely independent from the spider – web social system.  Tom “Kerry King” McKenna of HELLSWORN provides a really kick ass old school thrash metal inspired guitar solo on this album closing song.
Recorded, mixed and mastered @ CM Studios Coventry by Neil Williams of ABYSMAL AUDIO.

Live songs were recorded during the PUSSY RIOT benefit in their home town of New London Connecticut.  If you’re unaware, PUSSY RIOT is an all grrl Russian band that got arrested after speaking out against vladimir putin (intentionally not capitalized to signify disrespect).  They got arrested in 2011, and one or two of the members is still in there.  Apparently the women have been subjected to abuse including sexual abuse, and punx all over the world are (or should be) just as mad about them being arrested as the atrocities that happened in BANDA ACEH INDONESIA a couple years ago.
AMERICANT is an East Coast punk band from Connecticut that play aggressive HC with a hint of powerviolence.  Off the wall drumming matches the excellent guitar / bass work well, with enraged shouted vocals over it all.  Dual m / f vox on a couple songs, with entirely anarchist messages in the lyrics.  Song themes touch upon such topics as the annoyance of working, riot cops at peaceful protests, the rampant sexism of religion, a history of punk rock, the debt of the American dream, and unity.  Oh, and a tongue in cheek song about smoking.  I’m not really sure if they are anti cigs, but they definitely mention the ills of tobacco.  DON’T SMOKE – ITS FUCKING STUPID!!!! SMOKE DRUGS NOT CIGS.  Lyrics sheet is laid out like a stack of show flyers, and printed DIY on regular office paper.  Production is nice and bass heavy so ya can hear all the parts of the jig saw gnawing through the amps.  Great bass levels.  Plus the lead singer has been repeatedly seen rocking PROFANE EXISTENCE shirts! Fuck yea

Released as WILTED ROSE RECORDS #001.

“Once in awhile, something truly inspirational comes from southeastern Connecticut. These four bright and talented young people are going to change the face of music for the better for generations to come. Sure, they may be a little rough around the edges and drop a few f-bombs now and again, but what they lack in social norms they make up for with that special kind of spark that can lead us all to a better place. The kind of place we have dreampt of since our youth where anything is possible. That special place where, at least for a few moments, we are completely free from all the things that have held us back and tired our weary bones.” —  Norm McDonald of SNL (?)

0 FILTHY CHARITY / THE BUTCHER PROJECT: SPLIT CD: CD-R REVIEW

SPLIT  Filthy Charity start with a feedback induced intro that lulls one into a sense of comfort before the power violence comes pouring out of the speakers.  Mile a minute drums combat with blast driven guitar work.  Shouted vocals mixed with chicken screams, before the first song unexpectedly ends.  The second song starts again with a relatively long calming intro, before blasting back into the aforementioned formula.  From The Filth of Your Charity is a slowish song, with a big guitar sound and much better production than the rest of the songs.  Infact, the production for the FILTHY CHARITY side mostly seems like they used one microphone and recorded in their basement.  Crust as fuck & DIY!
The Butcher Project is much more streetpunk influenced and better produced.  Drums are much more in the mix, as are the vocals.  Chorus parts exhibit the whole band singing along to melodies, and the guitar has a much meatier tone.  This band is a lot like a bunch of other street punk / oi bands that I’m sure you’ve heard.  Dual vocals on some songs, band melodic sing alongs on chorus parts including “whoa!”, rock steady drums, and good guitar / bass tones.  If you like bands like DEFIANCE, LCB, THE UNSEEN, etc, I’m sure you will like THE BUTCHER PROJECT.
5 songs from each band.  Co-release on Enthropy, Abatos, and Neanderthal productions.  Recorded April 2012.

EXO  ALL PUNK / METAL DIE HARDS BEWARE: ELECTRONIC MUSIC
This is a French electronic band released on both RAVACHOL and SVOBODA among other distributors seemingly recorded in 2009.  All text in the booklet, including the song titles, is in French, except for the song titles Big Brother, and Microimplant.  This band is a two piece, one does the synth work / programmed drums, and the other does the guitar work and vocals.  Although I cant understand French, I do notice words here and there which make me aware that this band is anarchist in nature, and most likely advocate for an egalitarian society.  The duo seems to work well together, calling to mind such European industrial metal bands as Die Krupps among others.  no!, no Rammstein.  The music is much more in that style, although some songs do have a cheesy techno sound which I hate.  To be honest, I’m really not sure why EXOGENE or whomever was responsible, sent this for review to Profane Existence, because most punk / metal die hards would probably not approve.  I grew up listening to industrial, punk, and metal, so I actually like this.  What they do is decent, and is of a style which I thought had faded out about a decade ago.  All lyrics are in French, except the chorus for Big Brother, which is pretty self explanatory.  Booklet has some cool ufo pictures, and a band photo of the duo.  One of them is wearing a BOLTTHROWER shirt, presumably the guitarist.  This CD / band is good if you like industrial metal thats heavy on the keys.  If you cant stand electric drums or keyboards, I recommend you dont bother.
