Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

0 ISKRA – “Ruins” LP Available Now!

  • July 30, 2015
  • by nolordsnoleaders
  • · Uncategorized

We now have copies of this masterpiece in hand and ready for distribution!

FullSizeRender copy

FullSizeRenderFormed in 2002, ISKRA set out with one goal – To revolutionize the metal underground. When I asked founding member Wolf as to why punks / activist’s would spend so much time and energy working in a  metal scene that seems worlds away from anarchist principles, his response was simple, “Because it needs it.” Since the early 2000’s ISKRA have toured the United States, Canada, and Europe. Brilliantly combining crushing metal with well thought out and highly political lyrics, it is no surprise that they have become somewhat legendary in both the punk and metal underground.

“Ruins” is ISKRA’s third studio album and by far their best one yet. Recorded February 2014, Ruins was engineered and produced in true DIY fashion by ISKRA’s own drummer Cody Baresich. The album was then mastered for vinyl at Sweden’s CUTTING ROOM by Martin Ankelius.

FullSizeRender-4“Ruins” contains 10 punishing songs with lyrics ranging from anarchist theory, military drone strikes on civilian populations, historic native american battles against european colonialism, and a yearning to be free from draconian laws. Combined with over the top riffs, devastating blast beats, pulverizing toms, and the occasional dive bomb this LP will leave your speakers smoldering. Not only is this one of the most intense records PROFANE EXISTENCE has ever done, it is also one of the most beautiful presentations we have seen in recent years. The stark mountainous cover resembles Middle Earth artwork but the real gem is the 11in x 11in 12 page booklet inside. FullSizeRender-2Printed on glossy paper, this booklet contains not just lyrics but very thorough explanations of each song. This vinyl release is financed by a number of DIY labels from around the united states and Canada. Including, PROFANE EXISTENCE RECORDS (USA), BLACK RAVEN RECORDS (CAN), DOOMED SOCIETY RECORDS (CAN), WAR ON MUSIC (CAN), WHAT IS MAKING US SICK (CAN), NOCTURNAL RIEGN (USA), and ECHOES FROM BENEATH (CAN).

atu we dont need themAPPALACHIAN TERROR UNIT – “We Don’t Need Them” LP

“We Don’t Need Them” is the second full-length record from West Virginia punks Appalachian Terror Unit. ATU have become known throughout the years as being one of the most politically charged bands in the current punk scene. This new record is an all out attack on today’s society that takes ATU to a new level of intensity both lyrically and musically. The combination of the beautiful and thought provoking gatefold cover (with art designed by Stiv of War) along with the brilliant recording and mastering job by Jay Matheson at the Jam Room take this record even further.

Song subjects include the horrors of war, police brutality, destruction of the environment, rape culture, consumerism and much more. Expect a very heavy and much angrier approach from a band that has been around the block and matured their sound. Seven raging new tunes including the epic fourteen and a half minute track“We Don’t Need Them”, a song that will one day be ranked among similar greats as the SUBHUMANS “From the Cradle to the Grave” and AUS ROTTEN “And Now Back to Our Programming”.

11422686_936570653071639_1886705904_nThis is a split release between PROFANE EXISTENCE, RUIN NATION, SKULD RECORDS, and APPALACHIAN TERROR UNIT.

0 COMMUNION OF THIEVES: TO SERVE MAN: CD – R DEMO REVIEW

  • October 17, 2013
  • by PigBastard
  • · Reviews

a2871066156_10CoT is a fem fronted 5 piece blackened crust band from El Paso Texas.  There isn’t much punk at all with this outfit, apart from the red / anarchist message.  ISKRA call themselves anarchist metal, and this outfit isn’t far from that description.  The demo package for this CD is awesome and totally DIY.  Even the CD itself has the album cover printed onto the top with a glossy finish.  To Serve Man is 7 tracks (two of which open and close the album with no lyrics) played out in a little bit more than 30 minutes.  Recorded and released in 2012, by Culture War Distro.  The lyrics, just like the art, are anti – Christian in general, and talk about body politics and street riots in particular.  Two of the songs are entirely sung in Spanish, true to nature as some of the members are of Hispanic origin.  Their latest effort is a split release with a power violence band from Phoenix called Biocidio.
The opening track, Twilight of Capitalism 2, is a 3 minute instrumental prelude of the anarchist crust to come.  The guitar plays a repetitive minor key riff amidst sounds of urban unrest and general chaos, most likely caused by civil warfare.  Lots of sound samples keep it interesting for the 3:20, and ends with a crowd chanting for either peace or freedom.
Bottomless Execration comes next and instantly brings the black metal inspired crust that will play out through the rest of this album.  Minor key riffage on dual guitars, truly off the wall drumming that fully drowns itself in the art of blst beats, and reverb on the screeched out vocals.  COMMUNION OF THIEVES truly is a force to be reckoned with.  Beauty Beyond An Image slows the pace a bit, but just to make it more clearly emotional and melodic without losing the aggression.  Innocencia Interrumptida quickly returns to blast beat black metal form.  The acoustic intro for Black Earth is great, and the basic guitar pattern is used a lot through the rest of the song, albeit faster and distorted.  Pasos Libres is definitely one of the best musical compositions, there’s a lot of rage seething to escape, and after it is released, it gets washed into the drainage ditch with a thunderstorm, which ends up cleansing the listener in a rain storm with acoustic guitars before this beast is put to rest.
This demo is amazing and has top – notch production but retains a dusty feeling from the desert.  Although I thought this album would be very difficult to improve upon, you should really check out the new material on their bandcamp page, since they were able to do just that.

1 ALB(A)TWITCH: ONLY DEAD BIRDS SING OVER THE GRAVES OF FALLEN KINGS CD REVIEW

  • October 13, 2013
  • by PigBastard
  • · Reviews

Albatwitch-Only-Dead-Birds-150x150The ALBATWITCH were a mythical group of 4 foot tall ape–men that were hunted nearly to extinction in the early 1800s and lived in the hills and rivers of southeast Pennsylvania.  It is from these stories that the band gets their name. Full color booklet includes credits and lyrics as well as lots of artwork and a vinyl sticker (while supplies last).  Officially released September 2013, CD package seems to be made of recycled cardboard.
This band is unlike anything I have ever heard before.  The two member band that is ALB(A)TWITCH successfully mix dark folk, black noise, and crusty black metal together to create a sonic mass few have heard before.  Members come from other York PA bands such as STONE BREATH, LAYR, and CROW TONGUE, among others.  The band take influence from the other projects they are in and produce something beyond easy description.  Some songs are deeply rooted in a WITTR style of black metal, others are American folk based, while still others are harsh walls of machine made noise.  Lyrics are very anarcho – punk in style although not musically, other subjects deal amongst the timelessness of astral reality.  Apart from the metal based songs, the primary drums used are the dumbek and the Bodh ran, both of which are hand played drums.  Other traditional instruments consist of banjo, celtic harp, lobow, and stick dulcimer, amidst new technology such as oscillators and a harmonium.
The CD opens with an acoustic chamber style tune, devolves into industrial machine noise & distortion, then progresses into non-conventional black metal.  I say non – conventional because the vocals and guitar are drenched in reverb beyond clarity, industrial elements persist throughout, and the drums are slower than usual for the style.  The entire album rotates amidst these styles for 60 + minutes, although the styles start to weld together by the last 3rd of this cd and become a sludgy mixture which is still great.  By the time this album is over, it feels like the collapse of western civilization has commenced and we are naught but survivors in a strange new world.  We have survived because we have the integrity required to live through the heat and the cold and the intelligence to stave off the predators for another night.  All acoustic songs are performed to remind the listener that revolutionary music existed before electricity and modern technology, and will persist after the industrial collapse.
ALB(A)TWITCH is neither for the scene purist, nor the faint of heart.  Aided by the lyrics, the songs make one think, and that is exactly what this band wants people to do.  When listening to this album, one will be rewarded only if they bring an open mind.

1 CLASSIFIED RESISTANCE Thee Compilation LP (review)

  • August 29, 2013
  • by PigBastard
  • · PE Records · Reviews

ImageThis collection of underground artists loosely categorized within black metal captures the filth, ambiance, and destructive elements of black metal, along with 4 traditional low-fi black metal songs.  I hear similarities of Raspberry Bulbs (Chicago), and at other times Burzum (Oslo), but this musical ogre definitely feels unique with approach and style.  Side A is mostly ambiance laden with noise and 2 black metal songs.  Side B is the musical reverse, being mostly black metal but still experimental as hell.  This could probably be used as a film soundtrack, but the combination could potentially be scarring.  Nine ‘songs’ total, multiple artists have been used on this release to paint the evil atmosphere.  the booklet is laid out like a zine, and the gothic / satanic media give respect to Olde European lifestyle, sacrifice, satanism (surprise surprise), and some intelligent lyrics about the decay of Detroit city.  limited to 500 copies, this record comes with a bonus sticker and can be found via Thee High Priestess.

Holy shit! Yeah, that saying about judging a book buy it’s cover? Out the window. This is the second instaIlment of the Profane Existence Limited Edition Singles Series. I had certain expectations when I first set eyes on this beauty and they all came true. When the needle dropped on the Desolate side, the slow paced gloomy intro sets the scene heavy with dread and depression. It’s like being held down by a morphine drenched pile of sleeping bags. You can’t get up and realize that there’s just no good reason to try. The bleek lyrics and Hannah’s ghostly howls make it that much harsher once the band kicks into a fury of blackened crust riffing. Occasionally they slow down to open the mood up even further. On side Inebriated, the subject matter is exactly what you think: self medicating to get through this shit-circus of a human existence. This track is every bit as emotionally heavy and soul crushing as Desolate. Being experienced seasoned veterans of older Minneapolis bands, you know that the chances of this being a piece of crust magic is almost a sure thing and it is. I hope that we get many years and releases from DESPISE as they are nothing short of amazing! This is available in four different colors(black, red, pink or green) for $7.77 each or $25 for all four colors. (Jake)

0 THRANENKIND – The Elk CD

  • February 10, 2013
  • by backwoodsvegan
  • · Reviews

I threw threw this on during my drive home recently without ever having heard anything by these guys before and it couldn’t have been a better soundtrack. I live about 20 miles out of town in a heavily hilly and wooded area of Western New York. The trees are bare, with the exception of snow and/or ice and everything is calm, quiet and almost post apocalyptic. The cd starts with lush layers of beautiful guitar, playing clean and picking through chords creating a serene, but mildy oppressive atmosphere. Suddenly, distorted guitars tastefully kick in, but the mood isn’t altered. Things just get heavier. Vocals are minimal which creates an even more dramatic effect. They oddly fit, but seem like the vocalist may have been in a crust band at some point. Each song has a similar structure, but each as unique as the last. THRANENKIND is all about atmosphere, not blazing speed or brutality. They remind me a bit of WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM with out the black metal, but have a lot in common with CELESTIIAL, a “woodland doom” band from the Mid-Western U.S. Upon further investigation I found that these folks are very political and promote the vegan straightedge anarchist lifestyle. I love when political folks like these guys don’t play the expected musical style that fits their beliefs. There seem to be more and more Green Anarchist Black Metal bands popping up lately, which is awesome since I’m a huge black metal fan, but hate wading through all the sketchy bands to find the good ones. Not to mention that the production on this is perfect. No fake creepy wet dungeon recording. This is their first full length and this is a promo copy, so who knows if there will be any changes on the actual release. Oh, and my copy came with a little piece of what might be a fern in it. If you like slower atmospheric doom laden blackmetal done by people who give a shit, pick this up immediately. (Jake)

Just in this week, from Rinderherz Records Switzerland , I present CHAMBER!

One record from this batch in particular, by the band CHAMBER I found particularly interesting. Upon receiving the Rinderherz trade list, the Chamber description immediately captivated me. This excellent release is for those who dig the American wave of earthy pagan black metal. While I am more inclined to listen to bands that are of similar nature as opposed to bands that sound almost like WITTR, taken off guard by this one. Having very similar sound, almost eerily so Chamber sounds like a more stripped down version of WITTR – a little more raw and a little less “pretty”. This release also comes in spectacular  gate fold jacket with heavy stock sleeves that are printed with lush and intense images – creepy and haunting yet beautiful photography and lyrics. Also comes with a download card! Highly recommended!

Next up is SHADOW OF THE TORTURER from Memento Mori Records. This is some of the most interesting sludge doom I have heard in quite some time. This is definitely not the typical EYEHATEGOD wanna be boring crap that comes out year after year. What this is  – an innovative take on that style that has a sound like noone else. Hailing from Seattle SHADOW OF THE TORTURER features ex members of HC MINDS and ALDEBERAN ….. so this definietly has that West Coast gloom and doom feel very much akin to YOB and NEUROSIS, but with a touch of  BOLT THROWER (VERY SLOWED DOWN BT THOUGH!). This very slow, CRUNCHY and slightly psychedelic with some of the gnarliest vocal I have ever h Interesting note about this album is there is a nasty cover of BLACK SABBATH’s “Who Are You?” That one would never even recognize from even the most scrutinizing listen!
