Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

Fuck Your Mustache! Fuck Movember! – by Comrade Black

Movember- the time of the year, where men try to show they have testicles by growing an ugly flap of hair over their top lip. On top of looking like a greasy douchebag-hipster, pedophile, and/or cop –  you are helping to raise funds for a multi-billion dollar black hole of an industry that is notorious for cruel animal testing.

Straight up, it pisses me off to have to watch every year as well intentioned people help pave the golden road to the hell that is vivisection. The fact that these people are raising funds for a cause shows me they are probably not psychopaths, they are clearly able to have empathy for others. Now if we are to give the benefit of the doubt to these folks that the majority are unaware that the cancer industry is a cancer, that the money they raise will help torture animals for so called ‘science’, than perhaps we need to do more work in the direction of making those connections more explicit, and showing what is wrong with animals testing.

If people truly are concerned with stopping cancer, we should be encouraging people to make healthier lifestyle choices such as; quitting smoking, cutting meat, dairy, and processed foods out of their diet, as well as avoiding pharmasuiticals as much as possible (At least 50 drugs on the market cause cancer in lab animals. They are allowed because it is admitted that animal tests are not relevant.¹), and being more active. As well as working to stop the industrial pollutants and other known cancer causing agents from being produced in the first place. Fighting against industries like the Tar Sands, cell phone towers, or Monsanto’s monocropped franken-foods, is fighting against the spread of cancer (in more ways than one). Stopping corporations from dumping chemicals in our water supply, foods, and soil would do more towards stopping tumors than growing a fucking mustache. Of course that would involve actually doing work, organizing, and taking risks. Growing hair under your lips is far easier, and trendier.

Perhaps in response what those of us who care about animals could do is make this the month we dedicate to anti-vivisection work. Turn Movember into No-Vember, as in No to Vivisection! Increase our presence in the community; set up info-tables on the streets, at malls, universities, airports, or wherever. Organize demonstrations, including home demos, table at more events with explicitly anti-vivisection information, set up film screenings of Maximum Tolerated Dose², organize anti-vivisection teach ins or workshops, hand out leaflets, put up posters, graffiti, drop banners, make art, or whatever it is that you do to raise awareness. Or organize a fundraiser for anti-vivisection groups in your community. And of course for those able bodied warriors willing to truly risk their privilege there is the actions that make the most direct impact to the lives of lab animals, physically freeing them from cages under the cover of night.

There is so much more we can do than growing a patch of fucking hair.

1 Pissed Off! A true story of how even the best law can be obscene

  • September 23, 2012
  • by Comrade Black
  • · Columns · News
Every animal on earth has to pee sometime. Urination is perhaps the most natural thing we still do, thus why it is often referred to as nature calling. For most of human history, we like all other animals have been peeing outside, and in many parts of the world the majority of people still do. And even in industrialized countries where indoor plumbing has been the norm for about a hundred years, I think one would be hard pressed to find anyone who has never urinated outdoors. In contrast, the imposition of laws to govern human behavior is anything but natural. No other species of animal have written and codified laws, nor prisons to punish offenders. But laws are now a major part of our current way of living, so much so that many human animals can not even imagine a society without them. The imposition of laws upon us is rationalized as being for our own protection. In some cases Laws clearly have nothing to do with our safety and far more to do with protecting those who exploit people or other animals for profit, yet still there does exist those few laws that are hard to disagree with without looking like a psychopath. Hate crimes legislation for example, or laws that seek to punish sex offenders. Yet as Joel Schwabe found out recently even these laws can be used to criminalize and repress people who have really done piss all wrong.

-Interview with Joel Schwabe, interviewed by Comrade Black

CB:  Can you elaborate on what happened that lead up to you being charged?

JS:  I was stuck near the Snowqaulmie pass on I-90 heading east. It was Memorial Day long weekend, and traffic was packed. There was a line of cars that must have been 3-5 miles long. The combination of the long weekend, the festival goers, and a bout of highway construction resulted in traffic slowing to a crawl, and stopping completely for long periods of time. About half an hour after I had crawled past the last exit, I realized I needed to urinate soon. I was looking left and right for appropriate places to go, and noticed that some people were pulled over on the left hand shoulder, and peeing on the barrier. I’m a shy pisser, so I was looking for something a bit more discrete.  An hour later, and not much further down the road, I found a double wide shoulder on the right, near an on ramp, and pulled over to take a leak on the barrier, my body “hidden” between my car and facing away from traffic, onto a barrier. Granted, I could see a few cars on the desolate road leading to the on ramp, but the barrier was waist height, and I was as quick as possible. The moment I get back into the car, I see a police officer right behind me in the mirror. He comes up and says “Does this look like a restroom to you?” to which I manage, “Um….no…sorry, but-” and he cuts in with “Do you think these people here enjoy looking at your wiener? I’m writing you up for indecent exposure.” This is almost word for word what he said. And then he headed back to his car to write me up.

6 Drawing (A) Militant Resistance: Interview with Indigenous artist and author Gord Hill

 Interview by Comrade Black

Gord Hill is probably one of the most sought after speakers, writers and artists in regards to anarchism, militancy and Indigenous sovereignty in our area. His style is unique, drawing on his own cultural traditions and combining them with radical militant analysis of capitalism, colonialism, civilization and the state, presented in a format we would understand as a comic book. I have for years admired and been influenced by the work of Gord Hill, and on a few occasions have been lucky enough to organize events that he has taken part in.

Gord is a member of the Kwakwaka’wakw nation on the Northwest Coast.
I am very greatful that he accepted my request for an interview about his work and his latest comic book.

PE: I remember you saying once that your first comic was meant in part to help Indigenous people teach their children about their history. Who did you intend to reach with this new book?

It’s pretty broad, any one who is anti-capitalist, or who thinks the system is oppressive and unjust, who question the values and ways of life of capitalist society.  It’s meant for militants who may have participated in militant actions as well as those who question the validity of such tactics.

0 Dreams Of Occupation and liberal fantasies – Comrade Black

  • July 14, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · Columns · PE Web Zine

Don’t worry about sleeping through Occupy, you didn’t miss much other than a lot of middle class liberal students being like “Oh my god you mean I spent all that money of my parents on school and might not have a secure job after!!! oh my god, I just learned the and can barely deal with it, did you know capitalism is bad?!?”

the entire thing was based on the standard liberal bullshit

1) we need a mass movement, if we can get enough people on board we will hit a critical mass/tipping point and those in power will magically change their opinion to whatever we think is right, you know 100 monkeys

2) if we only have the best arguments, and facts, and can back them up, everyone will change their minds and become like us, and they will know our truth is their truth. The 1%[sic] will quit investing money and being rich and being the 1% if we just have enough good arguments

3) There is a right answer. There is one truth, only one, we have it. Our higher education and advanced society has conquered racism, sexism, and other ‘problems of the past’ of those more ignorant people who couldn’t help it because they were so unadvanced. Now we must make it our manifest destiny to share the word or the good news with everyone.

4) the issues that effect the white suburban middle class are the only issues that matter, things like colonialism are ‘special interest issues’ and those Indians pushing them on us is counterproductive because we need to have one unified movement that speaks for everyone. And we know what is best for everyone. strength in unity yo!

5) The problem isn’t the government, or the state, corporations, industrialism, the upper class; it is only the richest 1% the few bad apples who ruin capitalism for the rest of us. Just like when people whine about police brutality, it isn’t the police who are wrong, just a couple bad cops who do violent things. The institution itself is never the problem, I mean, how could we live without cops or cell phones? right? we just need to get rid of the 1% at the top and everyone else will be equal enough for me to get a good job after university.

6) The answer is to camp in the park. Non-violent symbolic protest is always the most effective. Plus it will be fun, there will probably be lots of cute college students down they to flirt with, maybe I will even get laid. Organizing? Protest? What are you talking about, that sounds way too much like work, and if I am not getting paid why should I do work? That is for the poor people to do. They should be working instead of doing drugs and getting in the way of our camp where the real 99% are trying to take a stand. All these lazy homeless people should go to school or get a job and quit making our protest look like we are just a bunch of bums.

7) Those people who wear black and just want to break things don’t represent us. We are the 99%. They are probably just agent provocateurs trying to discredit our legitimate movement by inflicting violence on those windows. If they come around again I will totally call the cops on them.
yup, I am cynical.
The only think posi I can honestly say about the Occupy movement is that it helped politicize a lot of people who had never thought about anything like capitalism, class, or so on. And it was for many folks their first experience with consensus organizing. Now lets just see if they are still doing anything in 5 yrs.

0 Black is the color of War – poetry from Comrade Black

  • July 10, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine

by Comrade Black

Black is the color of oil
a crude disrespect for the dead
blood of the land
the desert Tar Sands
bitumen
and war…
war against the wild
against life itself
the blood that’s been spilled
toxic
choking
filth
crude oil

And once stood a forest
where now spans the abyss
Mordor’s death wish
and the bird flaps its wings but can not fly
and children all ask why
corporations lie and animals die
grandmother cries
but this war has 2 sides [1]

Warriors take sides

like black panthers take pride
Zapatistas up-rise [2]
to fight genocide
and say Ya Basta! No More!

We must now join in the fight
Black blocs, black flags
the black charred crumbling skeleton of war

Black is the night without moonlight
more than just the absence of light [3]
the fires burns bright
but never to bright
to chase away the night
because black is the color of war

Warriors hide in the shadows of night
a symmetrical fight
requires stealth and insight
the cover of night
to equal the fight
because black is the color of war

Black bloc -vs- black mob
rioters -vs- cops
we fight hate out of love
and every song we sing is a love song [4]
because black is the color of war

and white is the color of death [5]
surrender is a corpse breath [6]
The cannibal sickness
eternity in purgatory
actions speak louder [7]
which is why
black is the color of war

And the warrior sang
there is no justice
Just us [8]
because black is the color of war

End-notes

[1] in some ways I feel strange including this. this line is a reference to the title of Derrick Jensen’s spoken word CD. I may not agree with everything Jensen is saying or doing now but his earlier work was a big influence on me and I still recommend people check out his early work, especially a language Older Than Words.

[2] The Black panthers and the Zapatistas have been a huge inspiration to me and to many others. The survival programs of the panthers and the declarations of the Zapatistas are good lessons in fighting oppression. Both were community based responses to the issues the people were struggling with. Both groups were armed resistance movements. both worked to get drugs and cops out of their communities. Both were very inspiring to anarchists and radicals and helped spawn other movements. I think it is important to study these movements, as well as groups like the Brown Berets, The Latin Kings, the Young Lords, APPO, the Pink Saris, and even the FLQ; we need to learn from what each of these groups did right, and where they went wrong if they did not succeed.

[3] a play off a line I read by John Zerzan in his article Silence. He says “Silence, like darkness, is hard to come by; but mind and spirit need its sustenance.” Zerzan explains how silence is more than the absence of sound, stating “Silence used to be, to varying degrees, a means of isolation. Now it is the absence of silence that works to render today’s world empty and isolating. Its reserves have been invaded and depleted. The Machine marches globally forward and silence is the dwindling place where noise has not yet penetrated. Civilization is a conspiracy of noise, designed to cover up the uncomfortable silences.”I believe all this holds equally true for darkness in todays world of neon lights[4] famous line by the anarcho-punk band Crass from their album Ys Sir I Will. “they ask why we don’t write love songs. What is it that we sing then? Our love of life is total, everything we do is an expression of that, Everything that we write is a love song.”

[5] This line is taken from the title of a short story by Margaret killjoy, which is included in an amazing collection of short stories by the same name. I highly highly recommend checking out White Is The Color Of Death by Combustion books, they are all amazing anarchist gothic steam punk stories that will stay with you for life.

[6] Perhaps it is because I was listening to Dropdead the day before writing this, but the words come from their song Cost of an Animal. “Don’t you realize? you’re eating death! And the taste in your mouth, is the corpse on your breath.”

[7] Words of a ALF warrior, Abdul Haqq, aka Walter Bond. I support Walter, i write to him in prison where he is serving 12 yrs. you should too. I believe that words are powerful, but never can they take the place of actual action.

[8] When I was volunteering with Stop Huntington Animal Cruelty (SHAC Canada) I was gifted a shirt to show their appreciation. it was an Animal Rights Militia shirt. across the back is a burning SUV with the text reading “The people murdering and torturing animals have names and addresses” and on the front was the letters A.R.M. with a machine gun and the text reading “there is no justice. Just US!”

1 Working Class Vegan Zine seeks submissions. Comrade Black

  • June 26, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · Columns · Features · PE Web Zine · Radness

We are seeking submissions for a zine on being both working class and vegan, to decenter veganism away from the politics of privilege and consumerism.

For many of us, buying whatever we want, flying around to animal rights conferences, or going this or that vegan band’s reunion in another country or state is simply not an option. For many of us who struggle with poverty as a lived experience the middle class liberal politics of voting with your dollars and buying overpriced fancy over-packaged goods is alienating and unrealistic. For many of us the food bank is our grocery store and dumpster diving after a house show isn’t something you do to be cool, it is something you do simply cause you can’t afford to buy good food. Our hope is it will help to be a resource of lived experiences for those who can’t relate to the mainstream vegan middle class clique, and that it would be full of useful strategies for coping with poverty while maintaining a vegan way of living.

The term ‘working class’ is ambiguous and many people use it to mean different things. For the context of this zine the term working class will refer to people who work dead end jobs at near minimum wage, or live on welfare or disability, or who struggle to pay rent each month, or are living on the streets or in homeless shelters. We are not referring to people who work high paid union jobs or work as roughnecks in the oil patch or logging industries. The point is to share the experiences of those who have struggled economically just to meet their basic needs yet feel maintaining a plant based diet is important to them.

Submissions should be between 1/2 a page to 5 pages in length (single spaced). We are open to many formats, from personal stories, to personal essays, to critiques, poetry, recipes, cartoons, jokes, or rants and tips. You can write about your struggles with food, or with mainstream liberal vegans, working with animals, why a plant based diet is important to you, nutrition, activism, wild harvesting, dumpster diving, or about how you have navigated the various barriers to eating healthy on a low budget and useful skills or information you have learned along the way.

Deadline for submission September 30

Mike XvX is a long time animal liberation activist, and singer songwriter who tours in the punk, folk punk and hardcore circuits bringing the message of resistance through music and action wherever he goes. Mike has toured extensively, and has taken part in animal liberation campaigns on four continents. Mike is currently organizing a multimedia tour incorporating different genres of music, poetry, film, and demos bringing the message of militant animal liberation and community activism across the west coast.

PE: Tell us a bit about some of the stuff you have been involved in over the years?

Mike XvX: Well other than this tour, I’ve been pretty busy the past few years. As a musician I’ve traveled to about 20 countries in the last three years which has been an amazing experience all on it’s own. Touring as a solo musician gives me the flexibility to tour as frequent as I’d like, wherever I’d like. I feel very fortunate to travel as much as I do to talk about animal rights in front of so many different people the world over, and in that period of time I’ve been lucky enough to build lasting relationships with a lot of folks I normally would have never had the opportunity to meet.

Other than music, I’ve been involved in the animal rights and other movements for almost a decade now. I’ve worked alongside several different groups in that time, and I try to make myself available to anyone that needs help in their campaigns. I work regularly with Portland and Seattle Animal Defense Leagues, volunteer as often as I can with Portland Anarchist Black Cross, as well as have done work for groups like Sea Shepherd in the past. In March of 2011 I traveled to Japan with Sea Shepherd to document the world largest cetacean slaughter, which is the Dall’s Porpoise slaughter in Otsuchi, Iwate. Incidentally, this was also the location of the epicenter of the tsunami that destroyed all of Japan’s northeastern coast, and myself and five other activists narrowly escaped with our lives.

0 Ten Common Sense Guidelines for Seeing Through Bullshit!!

1) One type of; tactic, tool, thought, person, strategy, or anything, is NEVER better or superior to having diversity. Our differences and our diversity make us stronger, not weaker

2) If a product has more than one type of disposable packaging it is not good for the environment, no matter what that packaging is made of or how “biodegradable” it is.

3) If it is shipped from more than 100 miles it is not sustainable or good for the environment no matter how it is made, what it is made of, how it is packaged, who made it, how biodegradable it is, or what it is being marketed as

4) If it has sugar or corn in the first 5 ingredients, it is not healthy no matter what the package says. Further if there is more than 2 or 3 ingredients you have never heard of, it is likely over processed and therefore unhealthy.

5) ALL emotions are good. Not feeling or admitting to an emotion is NEVER healthy. Bottling up your emotions or refusing to feel them only leads to self harm. Even anger, sadness, jealousy, hatred, depression, are all legitimate emotions. They are there for a reason. That does not mean you should always act based on emotions, but you need to allow yourself, & others, to feel them.

6) Just because someone only offers you a couple options, does not mean that those are the only choices that exist. Bullies will often try to trap you by ONLY offering you the options that they favor, or by rigging the question so the only option that sounds sane is the one they want you to choose. Our electoral system is a good example of this. You may have to look hard to find the other options. In some cases you may even have to create the alternatives yourself. In the end, you don’t have to settle for options that you have been presented.

7) Binaries are always false! or at least not the full story and range of options. Nothing is only black or white, left or right, etc. There is black and white, there are also the grays that come between them, but it does not end there, there is also color. This does not mean that binary categories don’t exist, but rather that there is more than just the binary. People have a tendency to try and reduce things to being simpler than they really are. This is dangerous, as it usually erases the existence of those that do not fit clearly into a binary system. Further, there is no universal cause, & therefore, no universal solution.

8) If you never assume anything, you can’t ever be wrong. We tend to assume people’s gender, sexuality, race, as well as that they are able bodied, and many other things like what we think they should want based on our experiences. We are often wrong.

9) ALL oppression and exploitation is wrong. There are NO exceptions. This is not a matter of political position or opinion, and does not change based on who is doing the exploiting, or being exploited. What you consider to be oppression/exploitation may differ based on your political position or your experiences, but the fact remains that oppression is always wrong. Therefore any solution that does not seek to abolish oppression and exploitation in all its forms is flawed, and will never lead to complete freedom.

10) You can never get more energy out of something than you put into it because the process will always take up some of the energy. If you could, then we would have invented perpetual motion. Thus, we should always be skeptical of technological solutions to problems that purport to not only create enough energy to power themselves, but to also create excess power, or technology that claims to not only not pollute but also clean up pollution. All things use energy, all things create waste. This could even be considered the inherent flaw in economic, capitalism, technology, or industry.

BRING ON THE APOCALYPSE!

by Comrade Black

I hate musical ringtones
almost as much as I hate mainstream music!
their like the ultimate example of postmodern pop culture
dis em bodied cut up pieces of songs
that were never good in the first place!
it’s like reading a single Psalm
out of the bible
randomly
for no reason
and completely out of
context
without any concept of who this god, or jesus guy are to begin with
you know…
like most so called “Christians” who preach it do
I was once handed a jesus pamphlet
by a white guy
with a white beard
on whyte ave
inside, it said…
we would know
when the end times were coming
because, as I read it said
there would be a rise in:
crime
homosexuality
promiscuity
premarital sex
vegetarianism
paganism
atheism
and…
satanism!

I thought
sounds like my kinda party
BRING ON THE APOCALYPSE!
worst propaganda for religious conversion ever

“one story concerns a very obnoxious missionary who delighted in scaring the people with tales of hell, eternal fires, and everlasting damnation. This man was very unpopular and people went out of their way to avoid him. But he persisted to contrast heaven and hell as a carrot-and-stick technique of conversion.

One Sunday after a particularly fearful description of hell he asked an old chief, the main holdout of the tribe against Christianity, where he wanted to go. The old chief asked the missionary where he was going. And the missionary replied that, of course, he as a missionary of the gospel was going to heaven.

“Then I’ll go to hell,” the old chief said, intent on having peace in the world to come if not in this world.”
