NEMESIS cross the line between hardcore and heavy. With heavy drums and evil vocals with a very clean guitar sound. NEMESIS are from Ohio with other heavy bands coming out of Ohio like INTEGRITY and RINGWORM. I could see NEMESIS at that level someday. This debut 7 inch on HEAD2WALL RECORDS is a good start. This release has 6 bone crushing tracks. My personal favorite is “Looking Glass”, follow the bandcamp link and listen for yourself. I was lucky enough to get clear vinyl so thank you for that.
4 live songs to accompany the 9 studio ones which provides the experience of what they sound like live as well as in the studio. Top notch! Live songs were recorded during the PUSSY RIOT benefit in their home town of New London Connecticut. If you’re unaware, PUSSY RIOT is an all grrl Russian band that got arrested after speaking out against vladimir putin (intentionally not capitalized to signify disrespect). They got arrested in 2011, and one or two of the members is still in there. Apparently the women have been subjected to abuse including sexual abuse, and punx all over the world are (or should be) just as mad about them being arrested as the atrocities that happened in BANDA ACEH INDONESIA a couple years ago.
AMERICANT is an East Coast punk band from Connecticut that play aggressive HC with a hint of powerviolence. Off the wall drumming matches the excellent guitar / bass work well, with enraged shouted vocals over it all. Dual m / f vox on a couple songs, with entirely anarchist messages in the lyrics. Song themes touch upon such topics as the annoyance of working, riot cops at peaceful protests, the rampant sexism of religion, a history of punk rock, the debt of the American dream, and unity. Oh, and a tongue in cheek song about smoking. I’m not really sure if they are anti cigs, but they definitely mention the ills of tobacco. DON’T SMOKE – ITS FUCKING STUPID!!!! SMOKE DRUGS NOT CIGS. Lyrics sheet is laid out like a stack of show flyers, and printed DIY on regular office paper. Production is nice and bass heavy so ya can hear all the parts of the jig saw gnawing through the amps. Great bass levels. Plus the lead singer has been repeatedly seen rocking PROFANE EXISTENCE shirts! Fuck yea
Released as WILTED ROSE RECORDS #001.
“Once in awhile, something truly inspirational comes from southeastern Connecticut. These four bright and talented young people are going to change the face of music for the better for generations to come. Sure, they may be a little rough around the edges and drop a few f-bombs now and again, but what they lack in social norms they make up for with that special kind of spark that can lead us all to a better place. The kind of place we have dreampt of since our youth where anything is possible. That special place where, at least for a few moments, we are completely free from all the things that have held us back and tired our weary bones.” — Norm McDonald of SNL (?)
This crusty California split 7” brings 4 songs from each band on a raging blue marble slab o’ wax. Blood Shot and Dilated play some crusty D – Beat influenced punk that maintains some hardcore and death metal elements. With dual (and sometimes triple) vocals with an overly competent drummer, there is just no stopping this East Bay band. The guitar and bass throw in a touch of emotion and lots of thrash attack mixed with a hint of black riffage. The drums easily hit the speed of death / black metal, and recoil back in time to maintain the base speed. Their last song, Bite The Hand, reminds me a bit of melodic Scandi – crust.
Blood Stained Reality comes from the sunny streets of San Diego, but you wouldn’t know it by the sound. The vocals are bigger and more liquor stained, unlike B&D who tend to scream a bit much. Also, the metal influence is gone, replaced with only pure SoCal punk. While there is no emotive or really even melodic approach, there is significant groove and a few breakdowns thrown in for good measure. Neither band sing about anything new or earth – shaking, but they team up for a great split on this release and compliment each other well.
7” limited to 500 copies, this one at least, is on blue marble. A co – release from a couple small time labels, and recorded in 2012 in East Palo Alto California.

Northwest Indiana band DOGMA is total straight up meat n potatoes Midwest hardcore, and this demo CD-R is proof of that fact. Five shredding songs in just as many minutes, this hardcore is a full on assault of the senses. No fluff and no filler, DOGMA is pure heavy hardcore. No little kids singing in their mom’s garage, this guy sounds like he weighs 300 lbs and is 6’6” tall! The intro is chaotic in an impressive way, and after about 40 secs, drops into the pummeling hardcore that this band provides., and never lets up again until the beast is dead. At times I hear AGNOSTIC FRONT but with a heavier sound and production, courtesy of Eddie Cantu from Joliet Illinois. DOGMA started in 2012 with 3 guys who had been playing in other bands together for a while. Good lyrics, included in fold – out poster sheet. Artwork done by the band’s drummer. This CD is highly recommended, but put the disc on repeat so you don’t miss any of the details in the short 5.5 minutes that this monster plays. Looking forward to a full length, or perhaps a vinyl 7”!

Florida… what do you think of? I’ll tell ya what I think: disneyworld, crowded beaches, swamps, alligators, old people, staunch conservatism, heat / humidity / sun, come to think of it, nothing good. But then I live in Minnesota, nowhere near the tropical state. Ive heard from several people that Florida has got a surprisingly decent scene. And Im not talking about death metal, but hardcore punk. To be honest, I didnt really believe them. god’s retirement home being the local spot for some good punk rock? But that actually makes sense because punk is fueled by rage not comfort. So evil staunch politics geared to the old and conservative could make for some really great furious punk. I went out on a limb and bought Baker Acted from some guys at the recent Grind Your Dick (or CLIT) Off Fest in Minneapolis. when I got around to putting this 7″ on the turntable, I was pleasantly surprised. Baker Acted released their record in October of 2012, and is the first release on All We Know Records. Hailing from Miami FL, this new band brings us 6 songs of punk rock with great bass lines, dual guitars, angry as fuck vocals and stop on a dime drums. The vast majority of songs on this record are sung by a womyn with a great vocie, which my wife and I both really enjoy. A few of the songs feature dual male / fem vocals, which brings an element of anarcho- style into the mix. This style has been done before, but this feels fresh and unique, not recycled at all like some bands do. A really good record from the underground of southern Florida, and highly recommended. By the way, the band name baker acted refers to a Florida bill passed in 1971 that allows mentally ill people to be committed to a mental health facility for 72 hours, against the will of the mentally ill person. Quite a fitting name for an angry fem led punk band. Other bands from Florida on AWK Recs are Recreant (Tampa), and Landbridge (also from Tampa)

This is Tokyo City thrash punk thats fun to listen to when youre drunk, and good lyrics to read when youre sober. This is classic sing along style crossover metal punk in the style of Deathside meets Motorhead, leaning more on the Motorhead side. All the Japanese lyrics are translated into English in the lyrics book, and most song choruses are sung in English. Apparently this is their second LP.
I found this quote at Soap and Spikes:
“Nagoya city, one of the cities raised up Japanese Hardcore by world-class level, has 九狼吽(CLOWN) in its core. They play aggressively, and it’s not too much to say that they represent Japanese Driving Hardcore Punk at this time. And this is their newest record. You can be killed with one blow of Mune, a son of Burning Spirits. Agitating shouts of their souls. Shot! Shot! Shot! The lumps of sound make your aggression accelerate and battling spirits fire. Pound! Pound! Pound! A direct new generation of Japanese Hardcore, goes on their own way of hard core laughing social situation! Just feel their boiling blood. Yes! Yes! Yes!” -Souichi / FORWARD”
A sample of what’s to come on the PE single release of the War//Plague e.p. “Primal”
While I was gathering paper and cardboard for a bonfire recently, I dumped the packing material out of the box from the last batch of review goodies I was sent quite a while ago and this cassette fell out. While the fire was great, I felt like a total jerk for missing this. By the looks of the cassette and logo I would have expected this to be heavy crust, but I was pleasantly surprised. While I am a big fan of that style, this was a nice surprise. This cassette has seven songs of blazing hardcore that I could swear came straight from the mid 90s even though they’ve only been around for a little over a year. The drums beat furiously pushing the wall of rage created by the guitars and bass. Adding to the mayhem are deep sociopolitical lyrics that are so well written and inspiring. I have to admit that the second time through these songs I was so moved I had to pull out my guitar and shred. By the time the time you read this, there’s a possibility that MASSEXIT will be close to putting out another fine release. I can’t wait! Even though the recording was pretty rough, this is one of the best releases I’ve heard in a very long time(and comes with a sticker). Honest and very well done. (Jake) http://massexitpunk.com/
Back in December, Harvest King Records released one hell of a compilation containing a nice assortment of bands over 20 tracks. Aside from ROYAL RED BRIGADE, KLEINS96, TOMORROW STARTS TODAY and THE JUMP OFF(who all have two), each band has one track to showcase their goods. Something to look forward to is the diversity in sound that everybody brings to the table unlike some comps that give a handful of bands all banging out tunes that, in reality, could all be the same band. The range on this disc hit punk rock, hardcore, indie, country/folk and more. Even better…you can listen to it for free! That’s right, free. So, go to Harvest King’s bandcamp site and check it out. Then, after realizing you like all the bands, order all the albums! (Jake)
For the last year we have been pressured by outside forces to keep the “retail” prices high for Profane Existence releases. We’ve never been able to get used to seeing our records priced at nearly double of what we traditionally sold them for. Profane Existence has always vehemently independent and our recent experiment with an exclusive distributor has pushed us outside of our comfort zone. Effective immediately, we are lowering our mail order prices across the board, back to where they were in 2011 (in fact less than 2011 in most cases). In the USA, most 7″s will now cost $5, CDs will be $6.66 and LPs will be $7.98 – all prices including postage. We do still have some older Profane Existence magazines left and they are also appropriately DIY priced.
We do still plan to keep the limited edition singles series going, but due to the economy of scale (or lack thereof), these records will still be significantly higher than mass-produced PE EPs. We will release a low-priced CD version, containing six complete EPs each, shortly after the release of 6th, 12, 18th, etc. PE also has quite a line-up good new releases planed for 2013, plus some some classic PE releases coming back with low-priced vinyl and CD versions.
We apologize for the lack of DIY spirit PE has displayed for the last year or so. We’ve all been busy with other aspects of our lives and regret that we let things slip out of whack for so long. Rest assured we are taking corrective steps to get PE back on track and to help keep DIY punk a force to be reckoned with!
